Garrincha, Brazil's football heroReading Garrincha, Ruy Castro’s splendid study of the forgotten Brazilian right-winger and twice World Cup winner, I was reminded by the analysis of poverty made by Oscar Lewis more than thirty years before.

Para inglês ver

I was in the UK when Garrincha died, and many people seemed to have heard about him. Even then, I agree with the author that Garrincha's story isn't well known outside Brazil, and is certainly much less known than Pelé's.

Nice to see Garrincha's story written in English - and well written at that. I'm sure people will like it.

i read the piece by Alex Bellos in 'Futebol', ii had never heard of the man beforehand yet his story seems more interesting than any other foreign footballer that ever-lived, added to the fact that Brazil never lost when him & Pele played together; his footballing talents should not be misplaced.
a highly informative read, recommended for all true football lovers.

I've half read the book and find it strangely compelling for several reasons - How many Garrincahas Peles Didis are ther still in Brazil, South America in general and in Africa and Asia that we never get to see.
If Duncan Edwards, Roger Byrne and Tommy Taylor had not perished at Munich would the story of the 1958 and 1962 world cups been different and Pele and Garrincha been so famous?
How can Garrincha's story and George Best's and also Maradona's have so many parrallels?
Has anyone tracked down any footage on DVD of garrincha playing? The only piece of action I can clearly remember is a free kick in the 1966 world cup at Goodison (I Think). The story would have that much more life with a few snatches of his undoued talent.

My father saw Garrincha play and said there was no difference in talent between Garrincha and Pele. Sad story, amazing skills and most important played the game for the love and passion. not like now where money rules and talent is second rate. My dad says he knows of many players whom unfortunately suffered the same fate as Garrincha.
What would these players be worth now?

self discipline
written by sunwindproducts, February 18, 2011
self discipline outside of sports is critical. people need to ration money, booze, food, sex, so they dont over do it and squander all the things in life.
