Brazilian AmazonJournalist Hélio Fernandes continues to be right – he says that somehow Brazil always manages to get worse than it was the day before. We have already written a great deal about the strategy of the multinationals and rich countries who want to keep Amazônia untouched, like a huge botanical garden.

Since the late 1960's and early '70's the Brasilean government(s) in power sold and ripped off much of the richs mother nature has given to the country to the multi-nationals. Petroleum discovery, R & D, arould the Atlantic was assisted by BP, Esso, Exon and other outside companies like McDermott, Otis, in exchange for teaching Petrobras the 101 in deep ocean drilling. Later in the '80's the forest were burned and prime mahagony hardwood trees sold to raise cattle for .99 cents hamburger meat to chains like McDonalds in its place. Now, they slash and burn more land for soybean plantations to export to China and other countries. At the present time more then fifty percent of the population live on US$1.00 a day and the government inplemented another money draining black hole called "Fome Zero". You would think that over thirty plus years that a majority of the wealth made by the government(s) treasurer would've treated their poor citizens to a better existence. Maybe, the government already sold out the Amazon to multi-nationals like Monsanto and Dow and the contract hasn't been leaked out yet. Good Luck! keeping those foreigners out of the last prestine jungle.

A poor article. Does not specify why it would be bad for foreign capital to develop the amazon except by saying that brazil would in the future lose soveirgnty over this land. How exactly would this happen? Monsanto is active in Rio grande do sul. Has brazil lost soveirgnty over that state. So the amazon is not the same. It is distant in sparcely inhabited ( a point the author could have made for example) yet who will work the amazon when it does start developing? will there by millions of work visas issued to foreigners so they can reside and occupy the rainforest as they work? This just seems like a bunch of pseudo-patriotic rubish.
By the way if the brazilian state takes so much money out of the economy and needs such high interest rates to finance itself hence attracting 79% of the available capital from banks due to high interests rates ( would you lend money to the brazilian state without demanding a high return for the risk?) then how can their be money for the brazilian private sector to develop the amazon? The only way is to cut the size of the state hence allowing the interest rates to fall and reducing taxes. Yet this means that the brazilian state would have to sacrifice itself in order for the brazilian people to have the means to develop the amazon and that won´t happen since their patriotism only goes as far as them not having to sacrifice anything. It is, in the end, as apthetic as carlos chagas article.

Many Americans actually give a damn about the future of the rain forest (whick is more than I can say about most Brazilians). I used to be one of them. I'm sick an tired of these ignorant Brazilian "natives" throwing there feces around like rabid monkeys! It's easy to spot the "ignorant." They're the ones who find it necessary to speak through profanity. They're too stupid to express themselves using proper English.

Americans are the least of your problems. Your own government is your worst enemy. So to you I say -- GOOD LUCK! God knows that you'll need it.

Yes,

The gringos are buying up the Amazon right now!

Take a look at

www.agBrazil.com

They are cutting down trees, draining swamps and selling land in Roraima

and they are making lots of money doing it.

Um abraço companheiros

Bravo
