The festival of explicit elitism has restarted, performed by the usual ones, those self-professed superior masters of royal Brazil. It didn’t take more than 24 hours for the elites, through their media spokespeople, to begin to apply on Severino Cavalcanti (House of Representative’s recently elected Speaker) what they had attempted but failed on former President Itamar Franco.

Encourage the man written by Guest,

I just sent Mr. Cavalcanti an encouraging email. I hope he follows the examples of Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu and Italy's Silvio Berlusconi. There are plenty of groups like College Republicans, Chambers of Commerce, conservative programs on radio and televison ready to give this man an enthusiastic reception here in the USA.

first the above poster is an idiot. Cavalcante isnt an ideological conservative he's a backbencher, a member of the low clergy. He got elected by promising to raise the salaries of house deputies (which wont pass thank god, it would be catastrophic for local goverment finances). Lastly glad handing ANYONE from the conservative side of American politics is political suicide in Brazil... hell its political suicide just about anywhere these days. Lastly you must really hate us to hope Cavalcanti is like Belusconi, one of the most corrupt heads of state in history, which come to think about it is impossible since hes not a member of the executive.
And Chagas is one of the most inept and unabashedly biased writters (if he may be called that) I have ever seen. Oh yeah, he supported the dictatorship but hey we all make mistakes... as if it was no worse then Cavalcanti partying too much in college (which he never attended, but hey its not measure of a man, look at Lula he might be the very best president in the entire world these past two years). Cavalcanti didnt win because of an inssurection or other such nonsense, he won bc PFL and PSDB disgustingly voted in block for him. Oh and the party leader of PP has said that yes they want ministries, even Cavalcante himself has said he wants the PP to have more ministries (he asked for Finance but he'll never get it since Palocci is doing such a stelar job).
So stop attempting to glorify this disgusting slug thats only interrested in increasing his own pay. You disgust me and you don't deserve your last name.

I agree with the last post. Cavalcanti is against capital punishment and I am sure he opposes the Iraq War. He is even more radical than many here in the USA. He is against all forms of abortions, even Bush believes that if you have been raped or the baby can damage the mother you should be allowed to have an abortion. His plan is to double the salary of deputies to some R$22,500 a month! Many states including Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul have stated that such a move would hurt their financial situaiton and even cause them to break the restrictions on the fiscal responsibility law. He is an old guard politician who will not be around for long. His type of politician, based on corportism, is slowing ending in Brazil so, who knows Brasilians will have to deal with him for another two years. Plus just listen to what he has said:
O corregedor da Câmara, que apresentou em 1999, uma emenda para que cada um dos três poderes, fixe o seu próprio salário, disse que "R$ 11,5 mil era muito pouco, para um parlamentar viver com dignidade".
Também contratou familiares (2 filhos), pagos com dinheiro público (o nosso).

He was elected because he promised to raise salaries and because the opposition understands that he is actually opposition as well. I think he would have managed to raise their salaries if he hadn't said it so loud and made this a priority. But how does he expect brasilian people who live with 300 RS, 400 Rs or even 2000 RS to accept that to be a good representative and live with dignity they should earn 22 000 RS. The most absurd of this is not actually how much they want to earn but making this a priority has enraged brazilian people. I think it is very disgusting in a coutry with so many problems to transform these people salary in a matter of national interest. We brazilians should be ashamed.
