Pope John Paul IIIn the Brazilian magazine Caros Amigos (Dear Friends), one of the last bastions of the left tupiniquim (a common term in Brazil, which refers to native Tupiniquim Indians, often used in a self-deprecating, mocking context), we read an emblematic article by Elaine Tavares, titled “The agonizing democracy”.

Janer- I love your articles, but are you not being a bit harsh? The Pope was steadfast in his opposition to Soviet Communism. Let's remember that the weaknesses of democracy are not an issue only of the theocratic or the socialists. The United States founders, strong belivers in property rights and religious freedom, recognized the potential for democracy to be the tyranny of the majority. If democracy leads to redistribution of income, the killing of the weak and feeble, the confiscation of private property, would it not cease to be moral? The goal is liberty and democracy is the means not the end. While I disagree with the Pope on many issues, he is not attempting to use force to impose his religious positions. That is the great distinctive of the modern Christian aproach to the Islamic fundamentalist approach. To compare the two is intelectualy dishonest and you- Janer- should know better. A better comparison would be to compare David Koresh of the Branch Dividians (that claimed to be Xtian) to the Islamic fundamentalists. Did the "freira" slap your hand to hard in Catholic school as a child? You are normaly logical and intelectualy honest but your mean spirited reaction to the pope makes me think you have some emotional baggage clouding your judgement.

The more I see articles like this, I'm more convinced that any imbecile can write an article!

Yes, all you need to write some few, non-explained, "facts", based on the writer's guessings, and world views, and forget the rest. There are only two ways of doing it, be pro or against it.

I'm no pro-left, but I'm sick of reading this "democracy" crap. I think that when we all lose the ability to criticize democracy is when the democracy will be another kind of dictatorship.
