Brazilian composer and novelist Chico Buarque de HollandaYou realize you are sitting in a dominantly Brazilian audience when "The Satanic Verses" author Salman Rushdie walks into the room mostly unnoticed only to see it burst into applause the moment Brazilian-born songwriting legend and novelist Chico Buarque quietly followed after him at the opening of the PEN Festival at the New York Public Library in Midtown Manhattan.

His other books were also published in the U.S. . "Estorvo"came out as "Turbulence"(at the event, he explained that the original title was untranslatable, something vouched by the translator himself, who was in the audience. "Benjamin" is also available.

As for touring, he explained that once he is done with writing new songs, there will be performances. He did play Carnegie Hall here a few years ago...

Someone in the audience did ask him to play something, but he apoligized saying that he "couldn't remember the chords"to his new material...

I hope this completes the article

Valeu mesmo, Ernest! You made my day with news that Chico is going to start performing his own material again. He's written something for the new Leila Pinheiro album I think, but I had the impression he'd packed it in for good apart from that. que bom...

First I thought maybe he couldn't come here because maybe he's on some FBI s**tlist but he came. Also I thought maybe he's against the USA government and that's why he never performs here.

Any Ideas?

I think the main problem is that no one outside Brazil know brazilian music well. I mean, brazilian music is much more than Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. Now these songwriters say that brazilian music is tied to the classics. No, it's not. However, there are very very good new musicians, singers, songwriters who want to record, but the music industry doesn't want them. So, let's take a better look at what's going on in Brazil. Let's make room for brand-new composers and keep on respecting the classics like Jobim, Hime, Veloso, Buarque and Gil.
Carnegie Hall?

I didn't think Chico had ever performed in the US (except, I've been told, that he sometimes informally played in Central Park!). When did that happen?

I was at the discussion, which was wonderful. I was just thrilled to be in the same room with Chico.

Re the last post about other composers: I think there's plenty going on in Brazil, and wish more of it would come here--people like Lenine, Pedro Luis, Celso Fonseca, and many others just don't get the opportunity to come. Brazilian music is so rich that the more you learn, the more you realize there is to learn. It's a bottomless well of beauty.
