Brazilians in America: 1.3 Million and Growing Fast PDF Print E-mail
Written by Émerson Luiz
Sunday, 29 May 2005 13:49

Brazilians in Boston, MassachusettsNew data released by the Brazilian government put the number of Brazilians living overseas at between 2.3 and 3 Million. Half of these emigrants have chosen the United States as their temporary or more often as their permanent new land.

Formally, Brazil has 1.8 million emigrants. But this number includes only those Brazilians who took the pain to tell the Brazilian consulates of the countries they moved to about their new address.

Brazilian government's estimates use data from foreign countries and consular services such as power of attorney, certificates and affidavits rendered to Brazilians overseas.

The official estimate is that the Brazilian community in American soil has reached  1.3 million, including legal and illegal emigrants. After the USA, the main concentrations of Brazilians are in Paraguay, Japan and Portugal.

This information was presented May 12 by  Manoel Gomes Pereira, the director of the Foreign Ministry's Department of Brazilian Communities Abroad, during a briefing of the Senate's Foreign Relations and National Defense Committee. The senators were discussing Brazilian emigration.

From 1996 to 2003, there was an average of 16 thousand new Brazilians entering the United States every year. That means 44 new Brazilians every day, including weekends and holidays. By 1996 the U.S. had less than 600 thousand Brazilians. Seven years later, this number had jumped to 720 thousand.

Illegal Brazilian immigrants have been frequently in the news in recent months due to the record number of those detained by the U.S. immigration police while trying to cross the Mexican border.

While 80% of all those arrested by the U.S. Border Patrol are Mexicans, the number of Brazilians is rising fast. Brazilians are already number 4, after Mexicans, Hondurans and Salvadorans.

Numbers from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Washington D.C., show a considerable growth in the number of illegal Brazilians arrested along Mexico's board. Those detained grew from 3,105 for the whole year of 2001 to 17,445 for just the first four months of 2005.

This sudden jump is worrying authorities in the U.S. and Brazil. So much so that the U.S. Customs and officials from the Brazilian government have joined forces to study the matter.

According to Pereira, Brazil's Foreign Ministry official, the economic crises starting at the beginning of the 1980s were the main reason for Brazilians' exodus.

In spite of revealing underestimated numbers, the 2000 U.S. Census had already shown a jump in the number of Brazilians living in the United States.

According to the American Census, in 1980, there were 47,965 Brazilians in US territory. This number had risen to 247,020, 20 years later.

Dreaming of America

Brazilian sociologist Ana Cristina Braga Martes, of São Paulo's Getúlio Vargas Foundation, has been studying Brazilians' emigration to the United States for more than ten years.

In 1994 she went to Boston for her first research on the subject that would be her thesis. She repeated the same study seven years later and now intends to interview those Brazilians who after living in the US decided to go back to Brazil.

Martes was just interviewed by weekly magazine Isto É (cover date: June 1st, 2005)about her work and drew a profile of the typical Brazilian who emigrates to the United States:

"In 1994, when I arrived in Boston to do my first research, there was a myth that the Brazilian immigrant was man, young, alone and from the city of Governador Valadares, in the state of Minas Gerais. It is possible that at the beginning the profile was like that. But the research showed another scenario: men and women, single and married in the same proportion.

"The majority, 90%, were between 21 and 45 years old. Regarding the origin in Brazil, 47% came from the state of Minas Gerais, 15% from Rio, 12% from São Paulo, 10% from Espírito Santo and 8% from other states. It is a national phenomenon, not limited to Minas.

"The educational profile is the following: people who did not manage to finish college. They entered college,  they did not finish it though or they graduated from a school that is not valued by the labor market. Those who do not have much expectations here in Brazil end up going away.

"They are people with a reasonable level of information and with much determination, willing to take risks. Imagine a person who can't say a word in English and who decides to live in the U.S! He all but becomes a child again,  he can't speak, can't read, can't make himself understood in the street. You need to have lots of courage."

And what are Brazilians doing in America? "They do not work under a contract, don't have formal benefits, and are poorly paid. They have jobs that the native population mostly does not value. They work as waiter assistants, pizza deliverers, shoeshiners,
maids, in the civil construction. Some enter a life of prostitution."

The sociologist revealed that she made a disturbing discovery: even Brazilians who are illegally in the U.S., without documents, feel that their rights as a citizen are more respected in the U.S. than in Brazil. Her conclusion: because of this more and more Brazilian are willing to try everything to realize their American dream.

Our Consular Service
written by Guest, May 29, 2005
In 1999, I had the opportunity to travel to Indonesia. I knew a lady with which I got married following the law and traditions from Indonesia.
Since that, I have tried to legalize this marriage in Brazil. However, I just find a hard time. My wife tried to register this marriage in the Brazilian Consular Service in Indonesia when she was living there but they did not accept because I was not in Indonesia.
In these last years, I went many times at Brazilian General Consulate in Toronto, Canada and always heard half explanations about the procedure for legalization of such documents. We went in a notary office in Toronto and we did a document with recognize signature stating that our marriage is in partial goods share to satisfy the Brazilian law. All these documents were brought to the Brazilian General Consulate in Toronto and we paid a fee of $ 72.00 dollars for such documents being recognized to be original.
We sent such papers to Brazilian Embassy in Jakarta. Although, so far we met a bad willing from the Brazilian Diplomacy Service in recognize the documents. I changed various e-mails with Ms. Ingrid about such documents. Ms. Ingrid through of her e-mails told me that the staff Ms. Jenny was responsible for such documentation.
In February 11, 2005 my sister in law went from Surabaya to Jacarta and visits the Brazilian Embassy with purpose to pay the fees and make the burocratic service in Indonesia Institutions.
To make things more easy, in this day, I called Ms Jenny, and she did not knew where was the file and told me that such procedure was only with Ms. Ingrid that was absent from the work.
Then, I called twice the embassy in Jakarta to speak with Mr. Jose Auri in the same morning and I asked him politely if he could give these documents to my sister in law.
So, he decided to give the papers to her and ask her to go to Surabaya to recognize the signature of the Justice Official that did the marriage.

It is very hard to believe in what is happening. I went to Indonesia; I was treated as a King. I respected the laws from that Country. I married conform the laws and traditions of Indonesia and now the Consular Service of my Country is making so difficult to recognize and register my marriage. Why? Discrimination? Envy?

My wife has an accounting degree from Airlangga University in Surabaya, she worked for more than 8 years at Ernest & Young and she was a senior audit when I met her. She came to Canada and recently ends a program in accounting at Seneca College with honours. She works from Monday to Sunday in two part time jobs and goes to College at night. I believe that any Country wants to recognize our marriage. The Canadian government never did a question about our marriage. Why Brazil makes so hard to recognize such documents?
Brazil should have good diplomatic body in any country. If the person is not fit for such service should be sent away and not sent to work in poor countries.

By Brazilian law, even being married, if I have sexual intercourse with a prostitute, and if she can prove it, she has the same civil rights than my wife. Now, why my wife in which a married inside a mosque does not have the same rights? Is it because she is Muslim? Or because she has another ethnic background?

I demand an explanation; I am fed up with this story. My sister in law wants to wait a new diplomatic body start to work in Jakarta to proceed with such documentation.

I feel ashamed from such service as Brazilian citizen.

BRAZIL NEEDS PEOPLE LIKE ME. I CAN STAY FOREVER OUT OF BRAZIL.I DO NOT KNOW WHY THE BRAZILIAN GOVERNMENT SPEND MONEY WITH INSTITUTO RIO BRANCO, I DO NOT SEE THE BRAZILIAN CONSULAR SERVICE DOING A GOOD JOB. THEY SHOULD BE TRAINED TO TREAT BETTER THE BRAZILIAN CITIZENS LIVING ABROAD. IF YOU HAVE A JOB, YOU MUST DO YOUR JOB AND NOT MAKE THE LIFE OF OTHERS DIFFICULT.

I've read your story many, many times now. You are a Brazilian citizen, right? Why don't you and your wife just go to Brazil, go to the cartório, and have a civil marriage? Bingo. Problem solved.

And, again, posting your educational accomplishments over and over again doesn't add anything except unnecessary characters to the post. We understand now. You have a lot of education. Alright already!

It might even be kind of romantic to get married all over again in your country of origin, don't you think? Propose to her. Tell her you'd do it all over again (or like a dirty old man once said, Baby, if I could do it all over again, I'd do it all over you!).

Are you kidding? marry again. This is not only my problem. It is the same problem of a lot people. Canada never asked me to proof anything about our marriage. I sponser her to live in Canada and soon she will be Canadian Citizen. The point is that she does not want to live in Brazil anymore. She got feed up with Brazilian Diplomacy and she is right. She did an account program here and end with honours and got a good job. She said to me what I am going to do in Brazil? I do not speak Portuguese and it seems to me that Brazil is a hard Country to live.

Brazilian Diplomatas must learn one lesson, it is not to be there in the office, reading the applications from regular citizens and play around with the life of others. Internet changed the communications and a man can make a lot noise with some e-mails.
When everybody knows how to use internet and start to talk about their own problems, and problems caused by organizations such Instituto Rio Branco, they will think twice before play game with a normal citizen.
Fidel Castro wanted to be a professional baseball player in the USA. They refused him, so Fidel did not have so much to do. He decided to do the Cuban revolution. Why the USA did not allow him to be a third category baseball player? Small mistake, huge problems.

Why do you bother answering the comments of this guy?! It is clear he is a bogus. The information on his educational background just does not add up. According to it, he attended a community college after he obtained a doctorate smilies/smiley.gif Also, note that he is almost illiterate and barely able to write in English. He is clearly making fun of all of us here.
Please, let’s just ignore him and focus on the article, which is quite interesting by the way. For instance, I wonder what will be the consequences for Brazil, in the long run, of having so many people immigrating to the U.S….
Does anyone know if

Rio Branco Institute
written by Guest, May 30, 2005

It is very stranger that the Rio Branco Institute demands English for the person to be approved by the institution. I lived in Toronto for more than 8 years. I went at least three times at Brazilian General Consulate in Toronto to copy and stamp my diploma of pharmacy and my diploma from my PhD in Science from Brazil and ask further documents and stamps for me to apply as graduate student in Canada. They always gave me the documents in Portuguese even I asking if it was possible to give me in English. Then, I need to pay the translations to such documents and pay for more stamps and so on. Thanks ohhh! Lord! We have an office from Catholic Church here that makes such translation in affordable price. Result! I never was being accepted in a graduate program in Canada. So much paper for a simple application.
I also went in the same consulate to see if it was possible to register my marriage in Brazil. I married with a foreign woman from Indonesia. The last time, I went there, I brought my wife with me. I think that I spoke with all consular body. It seems to me that everybody wants to see an exotic woman and not to solve the problem.
In the end my wife decided not to go to live in Brazil, she is not a stupid woman, she can see clearly what is going on.
In January she got a part time job in the Canada govern in administration. Today, she started a full time job in a financial sector of the same government institution, with responsibility to work with money and she is not a Canadian Citizen.
When I read that the Rio Branco Institute demands that the personal should know English, I started to ask my self, do they know English? Or they passed the Rio Branco Institute in playing the game of godfathers (comprades). If they really know English why they do not make the life of Brazilians more easy abroad doing documents in English when it is necessary and showing more concerns to Brazilian citizens problems?
It seems that so much education in Diplomacy is not doing better to Brazil.
I am still very angry with Brazilian Diplomacy. My plans were to come back to Brazil this year and suddenly I was lost. I really needed to think all my life again, since my wife saw how she would be treated in Brazil.

Well, I live abroad and I want to return to Brazil. Of course, life will be harder, but, with the right qualifications (and connections), it is not so hard to find a good job there.

I think you are right in the case of those people described by the article. Unskilled, cheap labor force. Surely, in their case, the U.S. is a much better option. The harder the environment (bad economy, high unemployment rates, etc.), the stricter natural selection is (the more qualified you should be).

By the much larger (and still increasing) tidal wave of Mexican immigration to the United States, Black Africans are coming to America in ever-greater numbers, placing an additional burden on White taxpayers and filling what used to be White living space -- the constantly-diminishing places where White families can live and raise children in peace and security.

According to GhanaWeb and the New York Times, Black Africans are arriving in numbers exceeding even those of the peak years of the transatlantic slave trade.

Since 1990 more have immigrated "than the total who disembarked in chains before the United States outlawed international slave trafficking in 1807. More have been coming here annually - about 50,000 legal immigrants - than in any of the peak years of the middle passage across the Atlantic, and more have migrated here from Africa since 1990 than in nearly the entire preceding two centuries."

My 30 year old fiance is from Sao Paulo,Brazil and he left Brazil 4 years ago because he told me that the economic opportunites are better here in the States. He is a very ambitious guy who used to work as a bank teller in Sao Paulo and didn't want to work there for 32 years like his father did. I admire him for his courage in coming to America, learning a new language and trying to make a good life for himself here. I know that he gets homesick for his parents, daughters and siblings but I am his family here in the States and I am sponsoring him. Since visiting Brazil in 2003 I knew that I wanted a Brazilian husband so I don't feel that it is coincidence that we met. Yemanja be praised for bringing us together!!!

Maybe if white people kept their asses out of everyone else's countries and stopped setting up multinational corporations all over the globe forcing others to flee to greener pastures they wouldn't have such a big problem. For the past 500 years the world's population has been killed off by white "settlers" taking over and invading the lands of others now the shoe is on the other foot.

Now you white people know what it's like to see your land and way of life diminish. Hell other races had to put up with your bs for the past 500 years now it's your turn. If you want them to stay home then you stay home and stop going around the world stealing the resources of other nations. Look at Iraq. You can start by pulling out your troops there and pulling out your troops elsewhere.

Stop your greedy multinationals from preventing people from making a fair wage in their own countries and you dont have to worry about them taking over "your" space.

Nonwhite undesirables (in your eyes) are just the chickens coming home to roost.

First, people in the US who complain about the color of immigrants are just dumb racists. Second, immigrants into the US are not a problem. To the contrary, the economy would grind to a halt without them, because they are performing cheap labor in agricultural fields, factories, restaurants, etc. Immigration is one area where dumb Republicans and rich Republicans differ. Dumb Republicans are knuckle-dragging racists who don't like immigrants of color. Rich Republicans love their cheap labor, and love them out of their neighborhoods, except when picked up on street corners as day labor and returned there in the evening. Immigrants legal and illegal contribute more to the economy than they take. The same can't be said for poor, dumb republicans who take scads of government assistance, and blame it on the hard working immigrant. But, they really can't help it. They are kept dumb and poor, and encouraged to hate the immigrant. That's just part of the strategy of class division in the US. Don't worry, dumb, racist Republicans, the Bush administration is trying its best to Brazilianize the US. When the disparity of income approaches that of Brazil, immigration will slow to a trickle. Then you can compete for the lettuce picking, house cleaning, dishwashing, etc. jobs at less than subsistance wages.
Hello
written by Guest, May 30, 2005
i have a story about coming to the USA...............my dad got money from a program in Brazil to do his post PhD at a university here in the United States. I came here when I was 5 years old, from the state of Sao Paulo. Personally, I have a unique case because I like both countries a lot but I hope to go to Brazil (maybe Curitiba or Florianapolis) one day! Its weird becaue I have two brothers and my oldest brother is from Bahia and he has not been back in 15 years, but he should go to Brazil he is unable to sustain himself here even though he is educated with a Masters in marketing. And my other brother he is younger than my older brother and he is the biggest American wanta-be ever. He also finished school here and he got a job at Fidelity in Boston. And then for some reason he quit, started his own English school and now is kinda drifitng in life. My brothers never talked to each other but after my middle brother visited Brazil for the first time in 1999, he and my oldest brother started talking. Before that point they had not talked for 8 years!
Plus, I think that because Brazil is industralizing, and will be growing more rapidly in the future (hopefully) I think that in the future I can make the most opportunity out of it!
I am a start guy, not the smartest but I know that I can make the right investments or start up my own business in Brazil in a place like Curitiba or Florianopolis and be happy with my life! But who really knows where life will bring us.
I know many illegal immigrants who live in my area in Massachusetts and they tend to be from the working class neighborhoods in Brazil. But in many ways they come here work hard, very hard and try to survive here and use the extra money to buy land, or apartments in Brazil and maybe go back.. I have met other people who tend to be younger, around my age in their late 20s and they plan on staying here! I guess I am the exception!
I also know a friend of my family who just finished his PhD and is going to Switzerland in June but after a year will be going back to Brazil for a job as a professor! I think their is no rule for Brazilians living here in the USA. Every individual has his or her own life story, and will decide their future when that time comes!
After I finish going to school here in the USA that the point in my life when I will try my very best to go back to Brazil. I hope to one day join the political debate in Brazil, maybe even join the PT party! Life is all about the choices you make and for me, a kid who was taken from Brazil very early I have build up a sick obesessoin with Brazl! I have over 2,000 articles printed on Brazilian politics and economics....I read news about Brazil every day! I just feel this calling from Brazil and honestly their is nothing that will stop me from eventually going to live in Brazil........Its a weird feeling according to my parents because she expected that I would be the one to love the USA more than Brazil and almost every says the same thing because I have lost much of Portuguese even though I am still able to understand it when it is spoken!

What is it that calls you back? Why do you think Curitiba or Florianopolis would be good for you? I'm not being like the guy above. I don't have any feeling one way or the other about it. I'm only curious.

Also, why PT? Again, I am only curious. I have no sides to take. What is your take on politics in Brazil? Other than making money and paying taxes, what would you like to contribute in going back?

I'm really just wanting to know what a young Brazilian guy who's been living in the US since he was five years old thinks, based on the 2000 plus articles he's read, stories from parents, friends, etc.

Some people like the guy above are going to slam you for whatever you say, but don't let that stop you from responding.

How witty. Another homophobic Brazilian guy. That kind of talk is usually the sign of repressed homosexuality. Why would you even think of that, unless of course you are a repressed gay man? Look, there's a big parade in São Paulo for you to go find your true self, and you don't even need a few beers like you usually do.

Good! It's about time that your white european stranglehold on the USA is finally coming to an end! Let people of all nationalities migrate to the USA! We absorbed your ancestors did'nt we! Two world wars over in europe pushed all the poor of europe over here during the last century! You think that your family is the only ones with the intelligence to look at a bad situation and say let's get out of here! Most of the africans that you spoke of did not make it through the middle passage. Millions died in the inhumane cargo holds of the slave ships. At least these people have a fighting chance. Let's look at it this way, the USA with its foreign policy along with its corporate interests have caused the conditions abroad that now threaten you white american way of life! Oh, by the way the native americans did not like your ancestors migrating here either, neither did the african americans who were just finding their way out of slavery and fighting Jim Crow Laws when along came these Europeans with their funny language and cultures invading neighborhoods and taking jobs away from african americans! You are just 100 yaes removed from the things you are complaining about. Why dont you do us americans who were here before you a favor, leave and stop stinking up the place!
Bring on the Brazilians!
written by Guest, May 31, 2005
We need more Brazilians here in America. Maybe we can start an underground railroad to get more Brazilians into the USA, George Bush and the Democrat and Republican parties certainly have a great undergroud railroad going for Mexicans! Bring them over in trucks like cattle! Change the laws to make it easier for them to come over and "take the jobs that Americans dont want." Let's build more prisons to put Americans in them to free up jobs for Mexicans! Better yet let's outsource jobs to India, piss off Americans and force them onto welfare and make the Mexicans pay for it! Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssss! We need more Mexicans! We need more Mexicans! We need more Mexicans! Viva la Mexicano!

Us real American men would love to have you as our women! LET'S DEPORT THE UGLY AMERICAN FEMINIST TO THE ISLAND OF UGLINESS TO LIVE OUT HER UGLY, MISERABLE LIFE WITH HER OWN KIND! When I lived in the USA, I did an observation. In the weekends well educated white career women goes after black or and mexican in general illegal workers to have sexual intercourse.

I even knew an illegal Mexican guy that lived beside my apartment and in the weekends he was very busy. I needed to sleep in my living room because my bedroom had same position with his bedroom and his bed use to hit the wall.

Your observation is 100% correct. You left one group of American women out of your obsevation, well educated African American Women. You see them sneaking into hotels and motels everywhere with white, mexican, arab men. Then they show up in public claiming to be oppressed! They have driven most of the black men to the white and latino women, or prison, drugs, or the bottle! But this is a good thing! Let the White and Mexican men pay the price that the black man has had to pay for 500 years, being paired with the most evil, selfish, feminist, man-hating gorgon on the face of the planet earth! I did'nt mention the Cruise Ships, Foreign Vacations. American Women are getting their Groove On wherever they go!
Sorry, about Cruise Ships

My wife is Brasileira and we used to live at the mexican bordertown of Nogales.
One day, we went to the inmigration office to do some paperwork and she was asked to translate for some detainees they had there.
It was six young Brazilian women from Minas Gerais. They were arrested for trying to cross illegally into the US.They were going to be sent to the Brazilian embassy in Mexico City.
They seemed to be well treated, they were just kept in an office, but obviously, not free to go.
My wife felt really sorry for their situation, after all that trouble to get there and now they were being sent back.
The inmigration officers said that they were better off there than trying to cross the desert on foot. That is the Sonora-Arizona desert in the summer. They also said that every year they get more and more Brazilians.

I had a conversation with a Mexican man some time back who told me that most of his Mexican friends will have sex with American Women, but when it comes to marriage they go back to their own country for a wife. The same is true with Arab men. These are very smart men! Not only do they use the American Career Woman for what she really is, they have the good sense not to become further involved with these feminist witches. Let this be a lesson for young American Men! The hag American Feminist Career Witch is now preying on you!

American men are as much of a problem as the women. America has the highest domestic violence rate in the world. Most American men are serial killers, greedy, money hungry, hard nosed, hard assed and QUICK to blame the woman for his problem.

Men of other cultures are more masculine yet have a soft, sexy side. American men of all races blame the woman for their problems failing to look into the mirror at themselves. Most don't support kids, cheat, beat and creep.

Foreign women can have them and after putting up with American men's s**t for awhile they will be the same bitter, twisted old hags that AMerican women are.

If you want to stay beautiful and happy STAY with your Latino men. They are some beautiful sexy men who genuinely love women and are sweet, gorgeous and passionate. Any woman would be a purring kitten in their arms instead of the hardened pitbull she has to be with abusive American men.

Don't blame your women for all of your problem. Most of you are selfhaters who simply love any other woman better than your own so stop fronting. Whenever one of you gets ahead you quickly drop your woman for a slag of another race.

Black professional men (and non professional ones too) chase after any other race of woman in droves. Few professional black women do the same.

You black man are the only man who openly puts his woman down. That speaks volumes about your ugly evil character than it does about your woman. A man who hates and does not respect himself surely cannot respect his woman.

I can see white supremacy did a number on you. Please seek therapy.

If you have been basing your arguements on rap lyrics, then you have to be one of the dumbest people I have come across...

Black men will leave their women for the women of other races when the opportunity arises???? This comment has led me to beleave that you are little more than a petty racist, and that your ignorant observations are therefore no more than completely laughable loads of fecal matter"....."In other words, no more than dumb dumb speak, from a retared moron"..

Black Woman With Brazilian Fiance
written by Guest, June 01, 2005
That's why I thank God for my Brazilian fiance. As a Black woman I got tired of dealing with Black men who have such a profound self-hatred that they can't see anything positive in their own women. Well two can play that game because I don't see any positives in the Black man. My Brazilian fiance has African ancestry because his mother is African but he doesn't have the self-hatred that pervade the psyche of the Black American man. Black man get help for self and stop blaming the Black woman for your problems.

Here I thought all this bitter black man talk was a continuation of the carrot in the ass stuff. Nope.

Interesting perspective you have there, Black Woman With Brazilian Fiance. I'm sure you are painting with a broad brush there. Certainly you can't claim ALL black men in the US are as you've depcited, nor are ALL Latino men as you have depicted. But, I must say, you have an interesting point that I've not heard before.

That's very sad. Yes, hundreds of years of white supremacy has done a number of American black men, and black women of course. That it further results in black men and women turning their backs on each other is so sad.

Ultimately, however, if your relationship with a Brazilian man results in future generations of black Americans with a strong sense of self-worth, that'll be great. Same for black American men. Let's wish them the same fortune to find women who value them and to create wonderful children who love themselves they way you'd want them to. Maybe someday we'll see a country where people are judged not by the color of their skin, but the content of their hearts, and the content of their hearts is as beautiful as the color of their skin (black, brown, yellow, white, it's all beautiful).

So, I dont know really know why I want to go to Curitiba or elsewhere. From what I understand they are beautiful cities and are very well organized. I like that, and I know their a still many problems within the city but I am willing to live with that, if I live in a city anywhere around the world....
I think that the PT have evolved into a modern day Labour Party (UK) or Socialist Party (Spain), and it has basically become the alternate power to the more conservative elements in politics....Now on some issues, like social issues, I am as or more liberal than the PT. I am in favor or a women's right to choose, civil unions (gay marriage), etc. Plus people should donate some of your salary to a cause that could lead to long term benefits to your country if you believe in their cause....Americans donate to the Red Cross, Salvation Army etc.... but on economic issues the PT and I differ a little...... I think that globalization can be beneficial if it is introduced in a gradual manner in the sense that it can improve the lives of as many people as possible, but it can hurt regions while opening benefits to other countries, look at China, Taiwan, India (but they have not followed the rapid neo-liberal reforms in the same pace as latin america and they dont put into place every single thing that the international community asks of them) China still has many state owned industries that they will not sell but rather are trying to help them compete against foriegn companies, even though some are failing and causing unemployment....Personally, I feel bad for Cardoso because the pro-market reforms were suppose to have made the Brazilian economy strong, and the numbers show that it in fact grew very slowly....take a look at growth it was barely above population growth.... also take a look at GDP per capita...Now, I still think that privitization of some companies was good except the selling off of companies in the electricity, water, sewage...They should have probably stayed in government hands....but I think the reason why Cardoso's economy did not work was because the Real Plan was flawed...It depended on high interest rates to make the Real, its currency equal to the dollar and basically it chocked the economies ability to grow and WORST of all the economy is now in debt more than ever, especially in short-term debt, which i might publish an article on how that is devastating the domestic economy and how it still affects Brazil today......I am sorry no economy can grow and generate jobs if you have 40 percent interest rates, there was too much stability over growth.....plus I think LOWER taxes are good, they are always good but they need to followed with cuts in government spending otherwise its better to keep taxes the same....
Also, personally I think the PT party is the most organized and i like their system where you pay 10 percent to the party............it keeps the party away from dirty corrupt money even though some members have fallen into the trap..... I think that making a life in Brazil is hard work, but the potential to become rich and to have a great network of friends and a healty social life is unique in Brazil...Let me say that the trips my family has made to Brazil has radically changed the structure of my family....My middle-brother, who the family believed would never go back to Brazil since he loved his life in the USA is now residing in Salvador and had the opportunity to do an MBA paid by Fedility Investments, but might now try to get an MBA in Brazil (FGV-BAHIA), which is good for him........
And for the guy who told me to stay in the United States, I personally think that making such a comment is stupid....I am Brazilian who can go back to Brazil tomorrow with my passport and literally know body will stop me. so how is it that I am gringo? As an individual would i ever give you advice on your life especially when I doubt what some people say in this chat when they talk about anal sex.... If the person who said that to me is Brazilian that is the exact individual mentality that needs to change because Brazil is and always will be an accepting place by at least the vast majority of its citizens....I dont need a visa I have the Brazilian passport and I also have a Spanish passport (my mom was born in Spain) so basically I feel like I have three distinct homes....So basically i have three great places to call home (Brazil, USA and Spain) and you know what I love them all, they are all very special countries!

It would be a nice topic, but I do not think many people are up for pleasent conversation. This forum is usually crawling with negativity and bitterness;" this is regardless of weather I like to come here or not".

"I just like to write"...

Also: "May I ask, just how small is your Bikini"???.. Hmmm?... "I am but a young man of 21, so I really would not mind knowing"... Also, I plan to vist Brazil at some time, and it would be nice to know what I could expect.

Are all of the girls in Brazil hot(what is the percentage of hot girls to not so hot girls??)??? Are you hot?? How old are you?? What is Brazilian night life like??? Is the crime rate as bad as everybody says??? When I visit Brazil will you still be a young lady??? What do Brazilian girls look for in guys, other than money ( not that this will be a problem by then )?? What kind of music is popular in Brazil?? Are there alot of gangs in Brazil?? If I come with one of my really white friends, will they be robbed??? I do not speak Portugese, will this be a problem?? Do many people speak English in Brazil???? What do people like to do in Brazil, other than go to the beach??? Are there night Clubs in Brazil??? What kind of music do the night clubs usually play?? On a scale of 1 to 10, how hot is the weather in Brazil?; not too too hot I hope... "I could go on forever, so I will stop here".....

"Brazilian lady, you have made a friend"..

By the way, you don't have to answer my questions if you do not want too (no biggie).

""Quotation marks can also mean that you yourself are trying to say something" (out loud, for example)... I think that your understanding of the english language may be very limited my friend, and this may be the cause of your frustration; "you may quote me on this"..."

WRONG!

Quotation marks are used for direct quotes of speech or of written text. They may also be used for emphasis. "Quotation marks signal direct speech (the actual words a speaker spoke). In creative writing, you may choose to use direct quotes to indicate interior thoughts, though you might instead use italics or nothing at all." http://jerz.setonhill.edu/writing/grammar/quotes/

But, if you insist on pursuing your own unique, albeit bizarre, usage, go right ahead. But don't claim you know what you're talking about, Bernie. It does make you look like an illiterate fool though.
