One of the reasons given to explain why there are so many Brazilians in Orkut, Google's social networking service, is that Brazilians are warm and friendly. If so, why are there so many "hatred" communities owned by Brazilians, some with a large number of members?

It is a LINGUISTIC and cultural issue written by Guest,
July 10, 2005
Perhaps the reason why you have such a hard time trying to find English language communities that hate popcorn, a car, or ice-crem is due to the fact that something around 80% of all people in Orkut are brazilian and thus portuguese speakers. To make a decent comparison, you would have to multiply english "hate" communities by eight and brazilian "odeio" communities by two, in order to keep the proportion. You have to realize that it is both a linguistic and cultural issue. In Brazilian day-to-day language, the word hate often tends to have a much lighter meaning, although when in the right (or wrong!) context, it can have the heaviest of meanings. A friend may say to another: "I hate you" beacuse of something really small and both will know that there`s absolutely no hate involved. Also, and most important, there is something called Hipérbole. It is a figure of speech that we brazilians use ALL the time. People say "Estou morrendo de fome" (I'm starving to death) more frequently than they say "Estou com fome" (I'm hungry). And this is the key to explain this alleged "hate" phenomenon. It's not about hate, it is about a liguistic phenomenon of Hipérbole (or expression through exageration, if you will). Among those "Odeio" communities, I bet less then 10% are truly about hate. Also, one thing that one needs to understand is that the vast majority of brazilian communities on orkut are not intended for discussion, at all!. They create communities expressing something, add a fun picture to it and the join. Why do they join?! Because they want that to be shown in their profile. They hope that the collection of hundreds of communities they are in gives people an idea of who they are, what they like, what they love, what they fear, what they don't understand, what they are not very fond of and only in some cases, what they really hate. Proof os this is that you may find lots of brazilian communities with hundreds or thousands of people in it and sometimes just a couple of topics opened or even none! Also, many people enter and leave these "odeio communities" chaotically, many times they change their minds and get into one "Eu Amo"(I love) or "Eu adoro"(I addore) regarding the same subject as the community "Eu odeio" they once were members, because they have changed their minds, or just decided it will look good on their profiles. It is all about image, all about how they want others to see them. People join these communities because they are great "ice breakers" for starting conversations, they make it very easy for people to start SMALL TALK, it makes it easier to flert as well. Obviously, this DOES refere to the rather notorious SOCIAL quality of brazilian.
A few example of "Eu odeio" communities:
- Odeio encher forma de gelo = I hate filling up ice forms - Odeio perder a ponta do durex = I hate losing the tip of the adhesive tape - Odeio quando o feriado cai no fim de semana = I hate when a holiday falls on a weekend - Odeio esperar a resposta no MSN = I hate when someone leaves me waiting too long for an answer on MSN Messenger - Odeio baratas = I hate c**kroaches - Odeio que me cutuquem = I hate to be pinched, refering to the habit some people have to call each other attentions by touching and gently pinching - Odeio cagar fora de casa = I hate to take a s**t outside my home (or in a bathroom other than my on) - Odeio dormir cedo = I hate going to bed early - Odeio lavar louça = I hate doing the dishes - Odeio o cara das Casas Bahia = I hate the guy from Casas Bahia. This guy is an actor and Casas Bahia is some sort of store. In the TV adds, he is deliberatly annoing, so to catch the viewer's attention. Evidenty, these people don't HATE him. - Odeio perguntas no fim da aula = I hate questions in the end of the class. This refers to when students are anxious to leave because class is about to end and the teacher asks "any questions?" and somebody answers "yes" - Odeio Matemática = I hate Math - Eu odeio meia molhada = I HATE WET SOCKS
Obviosly, these are not hate communities. In fact, in most cases, translating "Eu odeio" as "I hate" is a literal translation and not very appropriate. As anyone can see, most of these so called "hate"communities are ridiculous, and that is the intention. They are jokes!
PS: I love those non brazilians!

The usual word in English to express a dislike of something is just that, dislike. The word hate is frequently used nowadays in most English speaking communities replacing dislike. In my life there are few things I hate but many that I dislike. I suggest therefore that it is word useage rather than a really strong emotion.

why the hate brazilians? written by Guest,
July 12, 2005
I thought americans had the monopoly on hate. It seems as Brasil becomes more Americanized they become more hateful. That's logical. One of the ironies of Brasil is the pride in their unique identity, distinct from the US, while they embrace the capitalistic-walmart-consumer crap. The friendliest people full of hate? Add that to the list of ironies rapaz!

AMERICANS DON'T TRUST EACH OTHER (THAT'S WHY THEY ARE NOT NEITHER FRIENDLY NOR OPEN), DON'T REALLY LIKE EACH OTHER (THAT'S WHY WE SEE SO MANY OF THEM MARRYING ABROAD), DON'T CARE ABOUT THEIR FAMILIES, FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS, DON'T KNOW HOW TO BEHAVE, HOW TO RESPECT DIFFERENT CULTURES, POINTS OF VIEW, SKIN COLORS, RELIGIONS, AND EVEN CLOTHES! THE ONLY THING THEY RESPCET IS BRUTE FORCE - AND EVEN IN THIS, THEY LOOSE FOR BRAZILIANS WHO ARE UNIVERSAL FREE-FIGHT AND JIU-JITSU WORLD CHAMPIONS! THEY ARE SO IGNORANT THAT DON'T KNOW WE HAVE SUPERMARKETS ! CAN BARELY SPEAK THEIR OWN LANGUAGE ( WITH A LOT OF ERRORS) - WHAT ELSE ANOTHER IDIOM ! BRAIN s**t CHAMPIONS !

Every country has their haters. Such an ugly word. Brasilians nor Americans have cornered the market on Hate. The real haters in this world are the cowards responsible for 9-11 and the recently attacks in London. These people are responsible for making the world what it is today. Stop blaming President Bush. Although im not a Bush fan, he is a product of our environment. F those stinking Arabs.
God Bless America

It's curious how people cry and whine over 50 poor souls who died in London bombimg; these same people turn their blind eyes to and the 50 or souls equally poor souls who die ON A DAILY BASIS in Iraq, in Israel, in the Palestine. Now, I SAY: Go Figure! You get what you give. Lok at yourselves in the mirror first ebfore you knock other cultures. Don't take for granted that bombing the children and women and the old of other countries is OK just because you don't know them. They are just as humans as you are. Their lives are with just the same as your lives.

I think there are so many duplicates because google/orkut's servers suck. They crash often during searches and don't pull up everything unless you spell it exactly the same. So people think there is no community existing and create another. As for this article, Brazilians are just like all human beings. Everyone loves to "hate" things or criticize. Human nature.

I am English and lived in Brasil for five years my wife is Brasilian. I cant count the number of times I have said bom dia to people here only to be ignored. Or how many times I have been waiting at a shop counter to have someone try to stand in front of me. I don't care that your only claim to fame is football, racing drivers and the carnival I have never in my whole life, and I have travelled extensively, met so many inconsiderate bastards.

Hey... written by Guest,

I am brazilian and I'll try to explain: those communities were made just to show aspects of the member's personallity. And I guess that our "odeio" is much more weaker for us than your "hate"... We say it everyday like you'd say that "deslike" (we almost forget that this word exist).
We may be a little bit exagerated sometimes, I know... But it's not serious, that's the important thing.
And Brazil is an enormous country, and we are completely different depending on the place. I live in the south, and we are pretty cold and individualistic here... We are afraid of people. Going up, to Santa Catarina, for example, people love talking, hugging and etc. So, never try to create rules about us. It vary!
Sorry for my BAD, TERRIBLE English

Brasil sucks. Don't care about it, at all. I live here, in Brazil, but I'm not Braziliand. And, since I got here, it's all so desapointing! Beautiful women? Yeah, right. Most of them scare me with their faces! Hot guys? NOT! Intelligent people? They don't even know that word here! i talked with some teenagers, and their conversations resumes are: boys, girls, make out, sex, make-up. Uhu, the end! And they are soo rude! It's their way of being, I've been told. They don't have a life here, so, the best that they can do is stupid orkut communities.

complainers written by me,
July 15, 2009
brazilians are complainers. I lived in brazil for 2 years and am now married to one. he complains all the time. I have had this group of brazilian friends (of around 30 brazilian girls) for the past 5 years. In the past year I have just become so tired of their lazy complaining ways. All they do is make fun of, talk bad about others, talk behind peoples backs and they think everyday should be a party. So instead of working to support their families (and they are in debt) they go around spending money they dont have on parties they dont have time for and should be taking care of their little 6 month old babies.
I used to love brazilians but after these past 5 years estou de saco cheio! It's like stop generalizing people. stop complaining. try doing something instead of "really exciting parties that are better than american parties" i mean seriously. for new years we went to a friends house ate food, listened to music and played video games ... hwo is that different from an american party? and can we please eat something taht doesnt have leite condesado in it for a desert? please i am sick of it.
the funny thing is they go around saying americans are dirty but their homes are pig pens and their food is too salty for me to eat
