After 21 Years in Brazil I'm Getting Tired of Hearing: 'Gringo, Go Home' PDF Print E-mail
Written by Michael Kepp
Friday, 05 August 2005 14:27

Brazilian-flag EyeWhen, at parties, I tell a Brazilian that I moved here from the United States 21 years ago and have been married to a Brazilian woman with two kids for most of that time, they will often respond "Ah, então você já é brasileiro" ("Oh, you're already Brazilian"). But when someone else at that party asks that Brazilian who I am, he invariably says I'm a gringo.

In giving me this label, Brazilians make no distinction between me and the foreigner who arrived here yesterday. And even though I see myself as a hybrid, half American/half Brazilian, a "gringo brasileiro," I'll always be considered a gringo here.

Even though Brazilians are perhaps the world's most hospitable people, they, like all other peoples, have a provincial, "us versus them" attitude towards outsiders. Call it a universal form of prejudice.

It doesn't matter that I love this country, my adopted home, or that I root against Argentina in any soccer game, no matter who is the adversary. It doesn't matter that I denounce the Bush administration, especially its foreign policy, and disassociate myself from the majority of Americans who support it. This doesn't stop some Brazilians, critical of Yankees, from asking me: "Why do you Americans....?"

Perhaps Brazilians say "você já é brasileiro" because they are flattered that someone from a rich country prefers living in a poor one. I wonder if most Brazilians would say to a Pakistani or a Filipino living here for 21 years, "Ah, então, você já é brasileiro." But this is just a theory that may be half-baked.

Even naturalized Brazilians suffer from this provincial "us against them" prejudice. These "second-class citizens," as naturalized Brazilian essayist Fritz Utzeri calls them, can't be officials in the Armed Forces, can't be owners of media companies or even tugboat captains.

When former Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso nominated Philippe Reichstul as president of Petrobras in 1999, unionists opposed his nomination simply because of his naturalized status.

Even in the United States this provincial prejudice isn't as great an impediment to political office. Naturalized American Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected governor of California, not just because he was a movie star, but also because he was an immigrant in a state full of immigrants. It's hard to imagine a naturalized Brazilian winning the governorship of São Paulo state.

On the other hand, Americans don't receive most foreigners very warmly. Their own provincial posture is reflected in their feeling that they are superior to other people, especially darker-skinned foreigners.

This - along with the attacks of 9/11 - is the motive for the harsh way that U.S. immigration officials interrogate visitors from poor countries.

Just as Americans attack me for denouncing their "us vs. them" provincial prejudice, so do Brazilians when I write essays that are critical of this culture.

Rather than regard my outsiders' viewpoint as a mirror to see themselves more clearly, many Brazilians instead react by saying "Quem pediu sua opinião?." ("Who asked your opinion?)

The same Brazilian who tells me that "você já é brasileiro," will, upon hearing my mildest critical observation of his country, say, "Se não gosta daqui, vá para casa." ("If you don't like it here, just go home.") Another universal form of prejudice.

The problem is that my heart and my head are too Brazilian to survive an eventual return to the country I come from. So much so, that I feel more Brazilian than American, even though I'm not, and I dream in Portuguese, even though in these dreams I speak with an accent.

Maybe my dreaming in Portuguese should be the password that defines how Brazilian I am? Wouldn't it be great if Brazilians with provincial attitudes had to accept this password whenever a foreigner, who has made his country his home, asks for admittance to their exclusive club.

Overcompensation
written by Guest, August 05, 2005
I have noticed a tendency of Brazilians particularly to overcompensate with their own cultural pride against America's cultural pride, which can come across as arrogant and self-centered. So these Brazilians reject all of American culture and all Americans because of some well publicized things they take issue with and they generalize and stereotype. It should not matter whether one supports Bush or not. People should be taken as individuals. But human beings love to put down others to try and make themselves look big. It is too bad, but that is human nature. And human nature is often depraved and destructive.

Gringo?

"We had always assumed that it was simply a Spanish word meaning "a pesky European settler," but once we looked into the matter, it turned out that things weren't quite so cut and dried.
After entering the phrase "gringo origin" into the Yahoo! search box and clicking on some of the web page matches, we uncovered a controversy over the word's history.

It seems that many amateur etymologists believe the term comes from a song sung by American frontiersmen ("Green Grow the Rushes" or possibly "Green Grow the Lilacs") during the Mexican-American War. You can find details of this theory at a page hosted by Clan Sinclair, along with the lyrics to both songs.

A second theory postulates that American troops, during that same war, wore green uniforms and were taunted with cries of "Green go!" Frankly, we found that one hard to swallow. Thankfully, most of the sites we consulted viewed this idea with a healthy dose of skepticism.

One such site, a question-and-answer column called The Word Detective, offers a more compelling explanation of "gringo" and its origin. The detective says, "The most likely source of 'gringo' is the Spanish word 'gringo' itself, which means 'foreigner' or 'unintelligible gibberish.' The root of 'gringo,' in turn, is thought to have been 'griego,' Spanish for 'Greek,' often applied as slang to any foreigner."

Further research led us to conclude that this last theory is the most likely. The Word Wizard concurs wholeheartedly with the Word Detective, offering "griego" as the immediate root of "gringo."

Finally, we located a comprehensive article from Honduras This Week that outlines the long history of the term predating the Mexican-Amercian conflict. As far as we're concerned, it firmly places the far-fetched theories of overheard singing and anti-American sloganeering into the category of "urban myth," where they surely belong. "

I've been living in the US for over 15 years. I don't believe I'll ever be considered an American. I have assimilated to this culture as much as I can but still I will always be a Brazilian with an American citizenship! And that's fits me just fine! When I speak to some Brazilians about some of the changes I wish Brazil would make, I hear the same thing: "You have become too American!" On the other hand, I read a lot of good things about Brazil more on the foreign press than the Brazilian press but most Brazilians don't read foreign newspapers so they would never know. As far as feeling comfortable with the notion of a foreign living abroad, this is exactly what I am striving for. Nothing more, nothing less. As the previous poster said, we are all tribal minded. That's very human! (Sophia)
Note: I loved the Brazilian flag eye!

Re: Overcompensation
written by Guest, August 05, 2005
Are we really rejecting all the American culture? I doubt it, there are millions of Brazilians listening to American music like maniacs.

Never heard the word spa in Brazil? Or the words, piercing, download, overnight, internet, surf, web, delete, etc, etc?

No, wait, I have more, sandwiches, McDonald, Burger King, Hot Dog, Volleyball (and we are darn good), Basketball, Indy 500, sneakers, milk shake, diet, “lite” , and many other words now looking more Portuguese but with American influence.

Next time they call you Gringo, Mr. Keep, just use your sense of humor.

We must respect people from other countries.
I am brazilian and felt your pain as a person that loves our country but is not comprehended by many. Don´t bother, just keep loving. Virgin Mary and Jesus loves us and many don´t comprehend them.
I completely disagree with any form of maltreat to americans.
I don´t like to term gringo used as a bad word. If people knew that is to live in peace with God, and respect to Catholic Doctrin, the world would not become the chaos we see today.

We Americans have been and are the greatest force for good that the world has known, or ever will know. I am not being intentionally arrogant in saying this, but the absolutely moronic childish hatred and ignorance being tossed about here against my country is sickening.
2) the word "gringo goes back to mexico circa 1745 when irish mercenaries were dispatched by the king of spain to protect settlers in what is now the american southwest against apache indian attacks.
3) every country in latin america from the rio grande to tierra del fuego has virtually the exact same history . Dictatorships, military juntas, chronic corruption, and systemic oppression of the lower classes, from 1821 and simon bolivar til dawn this morning. Why does the author feel so defensive about bush, at least in America we had a clear choice I voted for bush , he would not have . but there was an alternative point of view to be had either way. We don't have 27 political parties that don't belive in a goddam thing, except in making alliances so they can steal the maximum amount of money from the people and often like thieves in the night jump parties after being elected thus betraying all the people that voted for them
I can\'t wait to return

I'm a gringo that has visted Brazil many times!...I love the country & and it's people...I'm well aware of the politics that conspires between the two countries...but as an everyday person living in a everyday world I feel...people should be jugded on a individual bases...Most North Americans love Brazilians...I can't wait to return to enjoy "my" extended family...The only thing I don't miss...is the crazy drivers in Sampa! (smile!)...but you can't always get what you want...a gringo longing for Brazil!!

Some years agoI was encouraged by a Brazillian friend to visit Brazil. I stayed with her family in Niteroi. The experience was magical and I was overwhelmed by how friendly everyone was. I was never so relaxed anywhere. I am anxious to return.
As a matter of fact the only incident I had was with an Australian who cursed me not knowing I spoke English.
I am a gringo and I realize that the US has been unfair to Brazil. There remains much work to be done by the diplomats to smooth things out.

As far as what my country is doing in the world: at least we're out there doing something.

Now that’s a moronic “contradiction” in itself, recursively! Americans need to examine their character as a nation…what are they seeking??? Spiritual Death?

Now, reverting back to the article by Mr. Michael Kepp, here is what I have to say…As a five generations Brasilian born and raised, I realize that are hypocrites all over the world, and Brasil is no exception. Mr. Kepp seems like a gentleman, loves Brasil, married to a Brasilian and with Brasilian kids. You are Brasilian despite wherever you were born.

Hold your head high and don’t pay any attention to those annoying inconsequential racists. Brasil belongs to you just as much as it belongs to me. So, welcome home!

Peace,

Reading the above testimonies, I don't know which scare me more: the ones by the chauvinist American pigs or the ones by the chauvinist Brazilian pigs. Thatn heavens the majority still seem to be normal people!

There may soon come a day, folks, when if you don't share the chauvinism that many of the above people exemplify, you'll have to put up or shut up. It looks to me ever more likely that an anti-foreign crusade is on the boil all across the world.

This article is well-writen and probably shows how Brasilian people can be.As a tourist you never get close to people to notice these prejudices that people may have, just like in other countries.I was born in Lebanon and moved to Sweden when I was a little child, have lived here for 31 years and I am still not fully accepted and probably these Swedes will never accept me.I have tried to be Swedish and think in a Swedish way but the only thing is that I have dark long hair and my name is Lebanese. To those that wrote"Gringo go home"I can only tell you that it is very easy to write a stupid sentence but how easy is it to move with an entire family and start up from 0??? People are very often hostile and rasist when they write these posts but I wonder if they would be so brave face to face?? At least they are not in Swden!!! I hope that people will start to think differently and not being so pathetical that say to someone "Go home" cause the earth belong to all of us and BASTA!!!!

I too had a somewhat similar experience living in the U.S. for 11 years as a student and religious worker (I'm a "latino" Buddhist) and Mr. Kepp's article ressonates with my own experience while living in Northern California for so many years. I thought myself an American but actually never really assimilated the culture. My Brazilian self is coming back to life since I got back here last February. If people understood their minds, all kinds of prejudices would naturally disappear.

Americans as a force for Good
written by Guest, August 08, 2005
Most Americans do not believe the world belongs to them. They see themselves as protectors of the world and the one sole power capable of keeping overeager dictators from trying to swallow up their less powerful neighbors. It is not a contradiction if one honestly looks at history to say that America has done more good for people around the world than any other nation. Only someone who loves to remain ignorant in order to feed their own hate would say otherwise. So sad that so many such people post here.

Canadian slain in Brazil
By AP

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- A gunman killed a Canadian engineer in what was apparently a robbery attempt gone awry, police said yesterday.

Richard Atkinson, 54, was shot dead by a gunman who invaded his home early Sunday morning inside the Green Park gated community in Macae, some 160 km west of Rio de Janeiro.

Atkinson's Brazilian wife, Adriana Goncalves, 24, told police the gunman forced her to tie her husband up and then shot him four times after he moved. Goncalves was hospitalized after the killing in a state of shock, police said. Local media said that the couple had been married for eight years.

The gunman fled the scene without taking anything, police said.

Atkinson worked for the Canadian company Transocean, which offers support services to the Brazilian oil company Petrobras. The city of Macae is home to some 5,000 foreign oil workers.

Police did not know what city Atkinson was from in Canada.

Is Maximus Decimus Meridius maximus between his legs as well or is he only daydreaming like the rest of the Brazilian men??
Err, hello?

Brazil is an immigrant society. The Germans and Poles who settled in the South were, well, gringos.

You might as well say "Get back to Portugal"!

Actually, yes, get back to Portugal.

And... so many Brazilians prove their patriotism by living (or wanting to) in the UK and the US.

So, wannabe gringos, just go back to your favela.

please? i am half canadian and america. some americans some candian and some brasilians are horrible people. but some are also wonderful people too. please try to be kind. we have an opportunity here to all talk - to communicate - from around the world - why waste it on hatred? why not talk? be honest? it won't all be nice but maybe we can understand each other better.
irish girl - brasil is worth visiting - but if you are nervouse maybe try to find someone local to help you befor you go. Crazy world police american. calm down and think about why people react to you like this. and brasilian guy with the 'why do people love it here?' - ok look - yes beautiful prople all over the world. thats true - but this forum is about foreigners in brasil - and i take it you're brasilian - so thats probably why people tell you we like your country. just say yes thankyou - best way to deal with unexpected compliments flying at you! peace!

Do not pay attention to the comments in this site from some nasty Brazilians. There are many good people in my country. Brazil is beautiful, rich and poor, good and bad, like any other place.

Be welcome.

I've been living here only a few years. Married to Brazilian lady. I've found most all people are very nice to me here.Yes, from same state as George Bush, Jr. & Sr.Calling me gringo, doesn't bother me, I've been called worse. I don't agree with all of Bush's policies, but do Brazilians agree with all of Lula's policies? Looking at television now, looks like many thieves in government. We have many thieves in government in USA too. Need put them all in prison like common criminals. Lighten up brasileros, we have same problems as you in many ways.
I luuuuuuuuuuv Brazil

I just love that country and have found my prince and am waiting for him to ask me to move to Brazil and live there with him and people can call me Gringa as much as they want as long as I can be with my brazilian prince!!!

OH, I can have a diarrea some day, so I have to take some medicine, preventively of course.
Opem your eyes USA, you don't live no more, if you don't let the lovely space you find behide your beds.
Brasil build nothing, and have noting to mather...
Gringoes & w*****ks!
written by Guest, August 10, 2005
I grew up with an American Father(gringo) and a Brazilian mother(w*****k). I have lived in, and love both countries. Yes, My dad will always be a gringo in Brazil, and My mom a w*****k in america. Why? Human nature is quite an ugly thing at its basic levels and the way we act towards forigners is a very basic thing. It is very tribal. My siblings and I are fortunate that we can pass as natives in both countries, and I am sad that my children will not be able to. I have traveled and lived in many other countries and While they all have good and bad, NOTHING BEATS BRAZIL & USA.
To my fellow Americans, the reason arabs hate us is our gov. supports corporate facsim in the middle east. If it wasnt for Iraqs oil we wouldnt even care about saddam or democracy. Cuba is a dictatorship and it is only 125 miles from Miami. Why Iraq and not Cuba? Cuba doesnt have the worlds 2nd largest supply of crude, thats why!
Terrorism will only end when the U.S. starts running its autos on ethanol
and our foreign policy stops punishing people who live in oil producing countries simply because its profitable for big petrol & weapons & construction(Haliburton) companies. That is the ugly
truth like it or not. Terrorists are evil but there is no way to win a war against
people who dont have anything to live for. I wonder how many young arab men would fall victim to terrors clutches if the U.S. spent 250 billion dollars building schools and factories and hospitals in that part of the world.
I wish that money was spent doing the same things here. But what do I know, I am just the son of an Gringo & a w*****k!
P.S. Gringoes & w*****ks
written by Guest, August 11, 2005
I almost forgot; To my fellow Brasiliero"s, Not all gringoes are greedy imperialists who go to brazil to have a good time with the women(OK my dad is still having a good time with his brazilian lady after 49 years!) Most Americans are just to busy working and playing hard to even educate themselves about things like geopolitics, or politics in general! Only political ignorance and fear can explain the current government in the USA
Please dont hate them for it. I only hope that these two great countries and the current inhabitants can continue to respect each other"s differences and grow stronger together. After all, my siblings and I are
proof that when Brazil & the USA get together it is a beautifull thing!
Happy to be in Brasil
written by Guest, August 11, 2005
While I sympathize with Kepp's views, I couldn't care less whether anyone calls me a gringo or not. I'm as much at home in Brasil as I ever was in Kansas. If someone ever tells me to 'vá pra casa', I'll just answer 'já tô aqui'. Life's too short to worry about what everyone else might think about me our the country where I was born.

Curious where does Ami come from ?
What has it gained you?
written by Guest, August 11, 2005
Your butt kissin' has still earned you contempt. I support GW Bush, think the war in Iraq is a good idea, think Kyoto is stupid. It's better to be hated for who you are than loved for who ya' ain't!
RE: What has it gained you?
written by Guest, August 11, 2005
If you think that the war in Iraq is a good idea and you support Bush why don't you spend a vacation in Iraq so the can rape you in your ass and then if you lucky they will let you go..if not they kill cheap and worthless dogs like you, soyou could continue to be hated
re: curious and from one american to ano
written by Guest, August 11, 2005
curious: do you mean what country i'm from or where the name comes from?
and contempt - go ahead disagree. thats why free speach and democracy are beautiful things. i am loved for who i am and i do love america - all of it. (ie canada usa brasil etc)
so you want to talk? put away 'but kissing' and 'stupid' and contempt. let's talk like rational people. i think when a country is in really bad shape and you ignore it you get situations like germany was in leading up to the second world war. when people have nothing to lose they are willing to do anything - ie become terrorists. so what options do contries who have more money have - well you can ignore the situation (like the usa, canda britain etc did about germany for a very long time) you can go and attack it (as in the us in iraq) or you can try and give aid to the peaple (ie united nations) now none of these options are great. they all have ups and downs but blowing stuff up make more people angry. I am glad that the US hasn't just blown up iraq and walked out to let them (or canada) try and pick up the peices but blowing up in the first place wasn't really a great idea. i hear news reports of iraqies saying - 'well at least with sadam we had electricity' maybe they wanted to be 'liberated' but at what cost? why is it terrorism when american things are blown up and 'liberation' when an iraqie restaurant is bombed? the government and big business control the media - in the us in canada (in brasil). the first casualty of war is the truth. who's lies are you listening to? so - what do you think? please answer me honestly - and try not to just call me stupid.
ami
Ami,You are not stupid

What impression do you want to give to people?
interesting question
written by Guest, August 11, 2005
in my iniatial comment i just wanted people to talk to one and other instead of blasting hate around. in my last comment i thought - well ok we are bringing up american foreign policy again so let's talk about it. since you don't really know who i am -your impression of me isn't that important. however i do want people to see a person who is not pro bush but also not anti -american. i'd also like them to see an american who talks about things instead of just making blanket statements (though i do make some of those to!)
why? what about you? (and who are you for tha matter smilies/wink.gif )
cheers

First of all I will agree that Canadian women are state-of-the art sexy creatures. I have done the Vancouver maneuver many times....in fact I still get an erection everytime I see a red and white maple leaf, works better than viagra! Second I have a cure for any person afflicted with Ilovegwbus**tis. First- PULL YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR LIMBAUGH! Next-STOP WATCHING FOX NEWS( it is worse than the north korean news agency, just bloody awfullcrap news) Then-put a towell over your head and pretend that you are a suadi royal, having the pres of the united states kissing your feet. Finally-GET A JOB AT WALL-MART and work off the clock for nothing just so you dont get fired! I think you get the picture.
Ami is not in a wrong place....

i liked the question about impression. i hadn't thought about it. i like when people make me think. re: the wrong place - i was begining to think that myself but then someone like you responds and i want to keep writing. we can just ignore the hatred and nasty comments and continue talking. i don't care if they make sex comments at me. it's just some type on a screen. i do care about talking to the rest of you!
cheers

ps: i sometimes wonder if the people saying nasty things as brasilians really are brasilian and the ones saying things as nasty americans are american. could be one grumpy person flaming just to try and start a fight . . .

Do you still want to know who or sorry what i am? Ami is that your real name? And what are you man or woman?? I agree with you about the hatred and nasty comments cause i liked the first post you wrote under "peace". Well i guess that you didnt find me very boring and that i made you think. Ami darling i believe that people are capable to write anything on this forum just look at us.Never judge til you know and have a clear idea of persons and situations
re: ami darling
written by Guest, August 12, 2005
descuple-me. i didn't mean to be judgemental. i was just curious who was asking about me. sorry if i sounded grumpy - i wasn't sure what you were asking - or why. i also wasn't sure if you were an american ready to eat me for being unpatriotic - or a brasilian just wondering what i was talking about. i am a woman. my real name is ami - but i don't want to give my last name b/c some people here are alittle crazy. *wink* i was born in the us and raised in canada by canadian/american parents. i have been to brasil for 3 months and have also lived in the usa and a little time in germany.
one more thing - sure i'd like to know a bit about who you are. and the 'what' referred to - what impression are you trying to give? not what are you! it's hard sometimes, in writing - especially when we have different first languages - to understand one and other isn't it?
