This means that an alternative model must be found to end the standoff over the FTAA, if that pact is to move forward. Such an alternative could be found by changing the fundamental calculus of the agreement. The substantial asymmetry among the trading partners and the basic needs of ordinary citizens should be taken into consideration during the negotiations, rather than focusing solely on the single factor of economic profitability.

1) Brazil also subsidizes heavily their farmers with much lower interet rates than others have to borrow.
2) Brazil has an export tax of 23 % on grains....that could be cancelled and be replaced with non farm subsidizes !
3) Brazil already has a very high overall trade balance with developed nations. Do they want always more but not be ready to import more ????
4) They are threatening China textile exports to Brazil....but this represents only 1 % of their textile industry. If they find that 1 % is a threat.....we could say the same......as to the products they export...to us !!!!!!!
5) If they would lower their unjustified interest rates....they would have a higher internal growth. But they look only at external growth.....to compensate....for their mismanagement of their internal growth !!!!
6) in Brazil, government's money never goes to social programs, health, education and then they tell us that it is because of us. Wrong ! They are responsible of their budgets.
7) They distribute so little that they are the champions of wealth disparitie sand social inequalities. This is their problem not ours.
9) 40 % of the Brazil economy is uninformal. This avoid taxes, social security payments, and pensions payments. And then they, indirectly, put the responsibily on wrong arguments.
10) They export too much basic commodities and do not transform them to added value products. This would generate millions of jobs and billions of taxes !
11) They do not want to pay for software as pirating is their name of the game !This also avoid.....taxes.
12) Same for drugs
Simply stated they want everything for free but expect us to pay very high prices for their products. They want us to open our doors....but dont want to open their doors !!!!
Reciprocity is simply not in their language and even less in their dictionary when it concerns the opening of their doors.
They offer very little to what they expect from us.
So....unfair or unfree trade....is done because of Brazil, not the developped nations.
The overall trade balance is highly in Brazil favor !!!!!
What do they expect more....from us ????????????
