First you have to assume the rich want to be "liberated", do you think they created this situation by accident? With the highest income disparity in the world the rich in Brazil have the country and it's citizens exactly where they want them. Cheap labor and servants, the ability to have their nose up and not help the poor and less fortuante. The rich of Brazil are the worlds most selfesh people and they have no desire to change Brazil's social or economic enviroment. They are willing to live behind their walls with bodyguards and fear, in exchange for their homes in Angra and Jardims. There is a trade off and they are willing to make it. When I see the spoiled strung out rich kids of Zona Sul hanging at the beaches stoned out of their minds in their new cars and "don't give a s**t about anyone attitudes" I see the future of Brazil. It's corruption and imorality that rules in Brazil...the favelas get larger and the poor get poorer...God help the day the poor in Brazil ever get mad.

I do business in EUA and Brasil. Where Brasil is now, we are going. Under Bush and his cronies, my country has become more unequal, less safe, and less politically reasonable. We distract our lower classes with religion and war. Brasil is becoming tired of religion. Anyone for an invasion of Bolivia?

Read the article closely, the author gives an acurate portrayl of Brazi's history and the root cause for its problems. Brazil unequality, crime and political instability and corruption are directly a result of Brazilian's not the Bush or any other world leaders actions...and it really is a dumb comment and a typical uneducated anti-Western one at that. The poster is typical of Brazilians, quick to place blame but unwilling to make difficult change. Bush and his "cronies" are an irresponsible and morally corrupt bunch, but Brazil has the resources to get by just fine without the US...it's your fault if you let US policy harm you.

You people are idiots. Buarque is saying that there needs to be more taxation and eficient government. This is inpossible unless Brazil opens its internal domestic markets to foriegn capital via a level playing field for foriegn companies. This will not happen unless there is a communist military dictatorship that eliminates the local elites, just as Mao and Castro have done. Once the new communist power structure becomes corrupt, capital will have access and the former elites will be gone.

You complain about the $ weakness. Sorry but it is your currency that is strong against ALL world currencies...after the collapse from 1 to 4 Reais to the $ !

The national consensus of many poor, not only in Brazil, is that the rich few reap all the profits in the countries, and have all the power; so as it stands something needs to be done about it and it starts with us, the first question being what? We cannot depend on them to help us, so I say again it starts with us, the poor. Therefore knowing with whom it begins the “who” is answered, and now onto the “what” can be done about it. The “when” is now the “where” is, it must be done in our lives. The “why” is also evident, which is to answer our complaint and the “what” is similar to the why because they both need to be answered by equality and fairness in living. The final solution must come from “how”; so how do we do it, and as was said above without wasting our time blaming the rich though the covetous are to blame, but let’s get on with answering the “how”. What then are some suggestions on answering the how now to get out of this poverty stricken state of affairs?
My suggestion is to boycott. Instead of buying a color television in support of their factories and import/export structures, buy a freezer full of beef in support of our local farmers. The money we receive by working for them, we ought to spend it, not on their companies but elsewhere, and only in the better areas that will provide our greater necessities of, food, clothing, and shelter, rather than video games etc. This is only one tiny idea, but many of us together with a variety of ideas can have a considerable impact on their economic structures.

But you have a very high tax rate...with low tax collection...failure is then guaranteed !!!!.
You should also diminish your bureaucracy which is one of the highest in the world, that increase the cost of doing business and reduce your competitivity.
Same for interest rates ! borrowing at 60 to 100 % rates is a guarantee of....failure....when your inflation is only 5 to 7 % !

In fact, during these 2 years of economic boom.....most developing nations fared far better than you....in economic growth rates !!!!!!

How could you explain that Lula promised 10 millions jobs and created only 3 millions after almost 3 years....and during a booming economy ?
How could you explain that Lula promised in writing 400'000 settlements of the MST and settled around 100'000 only after three years. He lied every day....and continues to do so...as he still maintains that his objective and promises will be met.
Can anyone of you believe him that he will create 7 millions jobs....in one year ? And settle 250'000 MST in one year....when he cut the voted budget by over 50 % ????????.

Same for the FMD disease in cattle. He says daily that everything is under control...but daily, new places are found with the disease. the government is still trying to find out why the disease reappeared. Again he his lying because he knows perfectly that....the sanitation budget of 167 millions Reais was reduced to 90 millions. AND of those 90 millions.....ONLY 30 millions have been freed so far. On top of that...NO cattle was vaccinated this year in Mato Grosso do Sul...where curiously..... the disease appeared !

I would buy the freezer at Future Shop, the same place I might but probably would not buy the TV, but if I was going to buy a TV I wouldn’t buy it at the same place I bought the freezer giving them the capture of the Marketplace, but at another store. What I am saying is purchase wisely, and from economies that are based on our greater necessities of food, clothing, and shelter, first. If you water the Japanese electronic market, it will grow rapidly, but if you water the domestic markets, would they not grow rapidly. The big question is in us where the battle of Armageddon lies? Can we resist our urges to buy flamboyantly rather than wisely?

I live in Canada and it is basically an export economy. This is a problem, because to export all of our raw materials rather than manufacturing them and sell the manufactured product, is a raping of the land and country by big landowners. An example is this, that if I owned a piece of land and all I did was grow on it and sell the products, it’s return of investment is nominal though a very, very easy way of life, and I would need more land to sustain myself with this method. If however, I planted some crops and also put a mill on it; by my own manufacturing of the raw product I would make more of a profit and not need as much land to do it. In other words diversification of the marketplace is a better method.

I think many of the above posters are missing Buarque's main point. He's not talking about exporting or importing or other ways of stimulating the economy, he's talking about investing in the poor. He's saying that the rich elite need to get over themselves and recognize that they actually have a lot to gain if they were willing to invest--really, seriously invest--in education, health care, and other social programs that would help "liberate" the poor. He's saying that the rich elite mistakenly believe that by keeping the poor poor they (the rich) never lose and that that's the attitude, the slave mentality, that has kept the country from progressing and developing more quickly. He's telling the rich to wake up and smell the coffee---that one's quality of life is not solely defined by one's capital or net worth, that it's about peace of mind, equity, safety etc...at least that's what I got from his article.

Look at the big picture. Buarque is no idiot. He doesn't come out and say 'revolution' . He says "Brazil needs to liberate the rich from" their money and power.
What will this achieve? Equality. The rich will be like every one else. Poor.
That is the fast road to freedom.

Switzerland has one of the highest gun ownership rates in the world owing to its militia based Army and yet has one of the lowest murder rates in the world proving that Guns are not the problem, people are the problem.

Countries like Norway, Iceland and the Faroe Islands are patches of infertile dirt stuck up in the artic circle with s**tty weather, darkness and cold most of the year and yet they boast 100% literacy rate, highest standard of living, quality of life, lowest crime in the world and one of the healthiest populations on the planet.

Yet Brazil is the 5th largest country, blessed with sunshine, fertile soil and vast natural resources but the country is f**ked politically, economically and socially proving again that the country is not the problem but the people are.

why does the author expand on a perspective of white european history? yes brasil was populated by slaves. the majority of brasilian's do not disagree with that fact.Try relating exploding populations to city centers ,the hope of a better life, and the unequal distribution of wealth, as a problem. then relate that, to brasil's major cities. rich or poor we all live in all live in a prison, one that gives oneselves boundries (real or or not) what society deems norm. why the present day world can not see beyond ones nose is beyond me!
