Brazilian astronaut Pontes between Lula and PutinRussians and Brazilians get closer after the meeting of the two presidents. A big agreement is on the way concerning the use of the space shuttle launch in Alcântara, in the state of Maranhão, in northern Brazil, by the Russians, who will take the first Brazilian astronaut, Lieutenant Colonel. Marcos Pontes, 41, to space in March inside the space shuttle Soyuz 4.

I think that geographycal location will not be an obstacle for Brazil/Russia relations. I see this partnership as a good thing. One thing is already happening for sure. If it weren't for Brazil's improved relations with China, Russia and other countries the US wouldn't be trying to get closer to Brazil. So it is a good thing.

Brazilian gems, women, music, soccer, so many things Brazilian are among the best. And they are! Too bad Brazilian politicians cannot be classified among the best. Except maybe if we are judging corruption...

Yes, we should start exporting high quality, first class corrupt politicians. I don't like the idea of US "trying" to get closer to Brazil, their hidden bat politics and the ultra low price of congressmen nowadays is not a good combo. I would prefer we forge strong relations within BRIC and put US in the back burner, get out of their radar.
Ohhhh là là !

The President of an exporting brazilian association should know that in 2005 the US$ was not weak at all. In fact it is a very strong currency against all MAJOR currencies.

The truth is simply that it is the Reais that is the strongest currency in the world due to your stupid high interest rates !

So what do you want ? Yo get what you wanted but dont forget that your currency before being strong collapsed by almost 75 % ! Therefore a recovery seems to be normal.

As to the forum member preferring to deal with BRIC, there is one warning : BRIC depends of a healthy US economy and their willingness to continue to accept a huge trade deficit.
On their next slowdown or worse, a recession, BRIC will be in need the most of a lot of kleenex !
Dont forget that the USA has a 4 years cycle in 2006.
Just look at what happened in previous cycle years : 2002, 1998, 1994, 1990, 1986 that came in 1987, 1982, 1978, 1974, 1970 etc etc
Therefore something of major importance should happen by the end of nex year or early 2007. It could be inflation, much higher US interest rates, economic slowdown or recession.
but Brazil today has other titles

- the world worst wealth inequality after Sierra Leone.
- the highest kidnaping rate in the world, even surpassing Colombia.
- the highest violent death crimes rate.
50 % of youths deaths in the 15/24 years range is due to violent crimes.
- the highest ever corruption since Lula is in power.
- the world highest interest rates after inflation.
- Insecurity
- Impunity
- world champions of crimes by thjeir own police.
- the world strongest currency for which most people complain and by saying wrongly that it is the US dollar that is weak.

I could continue to add quite a few medals in gold, silver or bronze.

Why do people get so angry when reading this online magazine I don't know. Facts are facts, write your comments and please save your hate to yourselves. Corruption is bad not only in Brazil, it's all over. The world sucks. What they are doing to the Amazon sucks. What they have done to all the forests in the world sucks. And what has been everyone's contribution?

...is, as everybody knows, a big space program. The more billions you extract from the population and spend on space exploration the richer you become.

Very well put. I'm English so perhaps I don't see the need for a Brazilian 'spaceman' quite in the same terms as some Brazilians. However, the reported $20 million to get the chap up there to do reseach on how a bean grows in zero gravity seems at best an example of very unwise public spending. I'm sure this reasearch has already been undertaken by the States, Russia (then USSR), and China -- I'm also pretty sure the results were widly published in the scientific journals. Moreover, how this will help farmers (growing beans in a non-zero gravity environment) boggles my imagination somewhat. So this leaves me wondering why, with all the other more pressing issues facing beligured Brazil, you need a bloody 'spaceman' at a cost of $20 million... You must be right. It's a devilishly cunning way to make Brazil and Brazilians all very, very rich.
