Prainha do Canto Verde, in Brazil's Northeastern state of Ceará"People called me crazy," says João Fernandes Filho, remembering the launch of his small inn for tourists a decade ago. "Then we opened the restaurant. ‘Who will be your customers?' people asked." French, Germans, Swiss, Americans, Brazilians - that's who. People from all over the world beat a path to the Pousada e Restaurante Sol e Mar, as it turns out.

Just currious. I paragraph10 it appears that the communities feel they will be harmed if they take low wage jobs working for the tourist industry, yet in paragraph 11 the comminuties are receiving training so they can take the same jobs. It doesn't make sense.
If tourism becomes the economic force that the government has envisioned, who will fund the development? Surely not the same communities who cannot currently afford to fullfil their oversight role. Keep in mind there are a limited number of tourists who like to rough it. Providing amenities costs money.
One last coment. An accurate description of the current standard of living in most of the northeast's fishing villages would be grinding poverty. Unless these communities are going to insist on local ownership of the tourist related-businesses, the local residents will simply be swapping one low-paying, deadend job for another.

If these folks don't have deeds to the property, who will loan money for business development. Seems like they should reprioritze their agenda and focus on legitimizing their land ownership. (I am assuming that these absentee owners are presenting bogus deeds. If not, then they have some serious problems.)

Good article, but exactly how are 9 million people per year going to fit on to the 8 international plane arrivals per day at Rio Galeao ? Only 1 airline from Europe and North America serves the Northeast. The future of Brazilian tourism relies on getting people there !
Hummmmm.

wow...you guys are detached from what is going on in terms of turism in brazil today. Let me give you an example... there are over 40 flights per day from all over the world to Natal brazil... most of them are Charters flights from Norway, swissland, finland, germany, spain, portugal... and also from atlanta georgia and luisiana (before katrine of course) Natal's new airport already reached it's capacity and now are building a second international airport to coupe with the forcasted increases... and that is only one city, one state... So you see, with 16 towsend miles of coast and great weather and great resourts and good prices...they just keep coming...
