The saddest thing about Brasil is the ignorance of social, political and economic issues that radically need changing. The general population feel powerless to change anything so they they wait to enjoy theirnext local Carnival, wait for the next World Cup to win, put some music on and start dancing - all to drown out the hopelesness of the situation. Meanwhile, media keeps the nation in a permanent slumber of ignorance with the anesthesia of ´novelas´and banal television. Unfortunately there is neither a public education campaigns nor poliical desire to improve anything there. There are few people with a combination of intellect, altruism, political energy and moral character prepared to confront the greedy, self-interested rich and powerful in Brasil. No-one there is prepared to make the hard decisions that will bring about long-term improvements either environmentally or socially. Such people are in real fear of being assasinated if their rage upsets the wrong person. The destruction of the Amazon is a classical example of lethargy. It is such a vast area and there is no political will to preserve this priceless garden. The government makes no prosecutions, provides no resources for policing, has no idea as to the extent of the destruction, and sadly, has no plan to do anything long-term about it. I have travelled all over Brasil and I know from experience and observation that if you want to destroy a pristine environment then give it to a Brasilian for a while. They have no idea about ecology. If it makes money then exploit it.A few areas in the south have been protected. But the Northeast is a disaster. Beautiful Maceió has totally polluted beaches that are unsafe to swim in because no-one there has the intellect to build a sewer system that works! I had been to Brasil four times before I actaully saw grass in a park.Thank God for the European influence in Curitiba! Greening, generally, is a foreign idea in Brasil. Money and expedience take priority over environmental protection in Brasil and that will never change. Bye-bye Amazon.

This is a ridiculous article. First, the USA has no interest in "stealing", or even buying, the Amazon. Second, the Amazon is in Brazil. If it is being destroyed, it is the Brazilians who are doing it. Third, the "greedy consumer" culture of the USA has created a high quality of life that all people should have. Brazilians, as much as anyone are desirous of this life. That is why immigration from Brazil to the USA is so high. I noticed that none of the postings following your article mention the fact that you are a member of Leonel Brizola´s PDT and at this moment you are not in Brasilia you are elsewhere spending taxpayers money you got from voting for the special session of congress. This is sad...I have just wasted thirty minutes reading these comments. Why is there so much finger pointing and blaming. Who cares whose fault it is? Why don't you go do something about? I bet if all the people that sat down and wrote the angry messages got off the computer chair and did at least one thing for the good, you could have saved one or more acres of trees. To start anything good EVERYONE must accept the blame and then decide to do something about it.

Sorry to say that again I have wasted time...but I do get off my chair and do a lot for the environment. I took the blame for many things that have happened in my surroundings and found a way to fix or better some of the problems. Maybe I cannot run out to the Amazon forest and do anything, but I do a lot in the US that helps support many of the ecological fights that go on daily.
