It's Time Brazil's Lula Chimes In on the US Immigration Reform Debate PDF Print E-mail
Written by Edgardo Quintanilla
Tuesday, 30 May 2006 12:06

Immigration march in the USThe hopes of undocumented Brazilians in the United States got a boost when last May 25, 2006, the U.S. Senate approved by a vote of 62 to 36 S. 2611 (the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006). What follows now at the U.S. Congress is a clash of two rival ideologies for what Immigration Law reform should be about because unlike the House of Representatives measure H.R. 4437, S. 2611 is not law-enforcement oriented. S. 2611 is a bipartisan Immigration Law proposal.

Ironically, the ensuing debate about the future of Immigration Law reform in the United States will take place while the vast majority of Brazilians root for a sixth World Cup championship this Summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

S. 2611 provides: 1) a path for Lawful Permanent Residence for the 12 million undocumented immigrants who have resided over five years in the United States of which Brazilians are estimated to be around 150,000,

2) a new temporary non-immigrant visa for people all over the world which will not exceed 200,000 visas per year,

3) the addition of more immigrant visas in the family- and employment-based categories which have significantly benefited Brazilians,

4) important changes for processing visas for agricultural workers in the United States for which Brazilians have hardly benefited in the past at all given the large pool of undocumented Mexican workers,

5) reform of the immigrant programs for professionals with higher degrees, and

6) the granting of Lawful Permanent Resident status for U.S. High School graduates who go on to pursue college degrees for which some undocumented Brazilians are expected to benefit.

Since the mid-1980s, no other major significant Immigration Law reform had been seriously considered in the United States. Thus, S. 2611 is a historic event as it comes in the midst of a rancorous debate over Immigration Law reform in the United States.

Current polls in the United States support the aims of S. 2611, which is portrayed by pro-immigrant groups as an earned path to legalization.

The debate in the U.S. English-language media has succeeded in mischaracterizing S. 2611 as an amnesty that leads to citizenship. Such mischaracterization has succeeded because Immigration Law is one of the most complex legal areas of law and anybody has a claim to providing a quick fix. From the chants of deport them all of the Minutemen to the proposal for open borders by some of the leaders of the Great American Boycott of 2006 last May 1st.

U.S. English-speaking talk-radio shows strive for higher ratings when selectively dealing with Immigration Law by keeping the debate at a visceral level of opinion devoid of facts and legal analysis in a country in which "American Idol" attracts more viewers than a speech by President George W. Bush in support of reforming Immigration Law in the U.S.

A sober legal analysis of S. 2611 shows that it is a long and winding row to obtaining Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) status. It takes five years of LPR status in the United States before a person can make the personal choice of becoming a U.S. citizen. Nothing in U.S. Immigration Law requires anybody to become a U.S. citizen. U.S. citizenship is a choice.

To contend that S. 2611 is a sure path to citizenship is a clever way by Republican politicians of raising the specter of hordes of mostly Spanish-speaking persons striving to become U.S. citizens in order to take the jobs that so-called Americans do not want.

Fear fuels the Immigration Law debate in the United States these days.

A review of the U.S. media shows that the view of the current Brazilian president is irrelevant and it is hardly considered. The approval of S. 2611 presents Lula with another unique opportunity to speak on behalf of immigrants in the United States.

The rattling of the U.S. government cage carried on weekly by President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela in denouncing the maladies of the U.S. system in effectively addressing the problem of immigration makes greater headlines in the U.S. press than what Lula has to say about it.

We are poised in the United States this Summer of 2006 for a period that lays the seeds of racial discord or for a period that brings out the best in American politics - that compromise is the breakfast of political champions.

S. 2611 would benefit most Brazilians in the United States. Don't count on the Brazilian government coming out in public to support such measure even if S. 2611 would have a more lasting effect upon Brazil than if the Brazilian team were to win a sixth World Cup in Germany.

Excellent article !
written by Guest, May 30, 2006
But simply a bit too much one sided !

And there is not a word about another new invasion even far bigger than the actual one of illegal foreigners who will do everything to enter the USA, should S.2611 be accepted !!!

In only a five years time or so, a minimum of another 12 millions of new illegal immigrants will
create the same problem as today !
What will America then do ?
????
written by Guest, May 30, 2006
But why should American accept and tolerate illegal foreigners by the hundreds of thousands and even more, from countries that are totally against the USA policies and totally against the FTAA ???
Why should America accept and even legalize illegal foreign citizens that are not even respectful of America policies and lifestyle ?

Concerning illegal Brazilians in the USA, the number is not estimated at 250'000 as it is written in the article but at well over 1 million !
That is a reason a tourist visa requested by Brazilians is regularly denied now !

*S. 2611 provides: 1) a path for Lawful Permanent Residence for the 12 million undocumented immigrants who have resided over five years in the United States of which Brazilians are estimated to be around 150,000, *

Read that one more time. He did not mention that there are only 150 thousands Brazilians in the USA. He said that there are 150 thousands Brazilians "who have resided over five years in the United States". There are thousands of Brazilians legally living in the USA. The estimate you have includes: legal, illegal with more than 5 years residency and illegal with less than 5 years.

One more thing, the fact that a country is against the USA (politically, the government) does not mean that all the people from that country are anti-American.

Question for you, intended as an example: Why is that the USA did not deport all the Germans during the WWII?
STUPID QUESTION !
written by Guest, May 30, 2006
Thus stupid question returned :
Is Brazil at WAR NOW ? WWIII ? With whom ? I did not see the news for the last several years !!!

Smile !

Therefore comparing illegal brazilians in the USA now and legally accepted germans during WWII is just irrelevant !

Going back to 12 millions undocumented immigrants, something is wrong !

The estimate is 12 millions total illegal immigrants, regardless if more or less than 5 years in the USA ! Therefore the number with 5 years or more should be much much lower than 12 millions...by definition !

But you are right on the other points !

RE: STUPID QUESTION !
written by Guest, May 30, 2006
Brazil is not at war, indeed, and the intention of the question was quite different from what you interpreted.

Illegal Brazilians should not be treated differently because of some issues between Lula and the government of the US.

The Brazilians are in the USA mostly because of economical issues. The fact that our government is not favorable to the USA in many political and economical points should not be used as an impediment to legalize Brazilians, the same applies to the Mexicans, Cubans, etc.

And why a Brazuca living in the USA would not know a heck about WTO, FTAA? What is the basis for this type of statement? Explain your logic.

In our current time, however, do you think that the US is the only country dealing with illegal immigration? What are the main causes, in your astute opinion, for illegal immigration of people from one country to another?

The Mexican Government has forty consulates many times more than any other Counttry. With paid lobbists and other means the Mexican Government exerts huge pressure on the United States government, which vastly favors Mexicans over other countries in immigration. There are over 180 countries in the World. The USA received more immigrants from Mexico than from the other 180 countries combined. A US immigration official recently boasted the success of a targeted enforcement action which reduced by 92% the number of Brazilians entering the government. The Senate bill will greatly reduce the number of "lottery visas" for unskilled workers, which had been the primary legal source of immigrants from Africa. By allowing a porous border with Mexico and allowing millions of Mexicans to pour into the USA while effectively excluding most immigrants from Brazil, Africa, Europe, and Asia the USA has acquiesed in having a racist immigration policy that allows millions of Mexican Mestizos to pour into the USA while only a small handful of immigrants are received from each of the other 180 countries in the World.

To clarify my last post, Mexico maintains over 40 consulates inside the United States of America. No other country maintains anywhere near that many consulates inside the USA. The Mexican Consulates, exert enomourous pressure to maintain the racist immigrations practices which result in the USA receiving more immigrants from Mexico than all of the 180 other countries in the world combined.

I am a Brazilian living in the US.

Although I have met some white Mexicans, the majority is a mix or pure Indians and that causes some Americans to have some concerns about racial miscegenation. On the other hand, can you believe that even some Brazilians here discriminate the Mexicans?

By the other hand, the US is allowing a lot of people from India to get work visa and latter permanent visa. I worked with an engineer from India who came to US on a work visa and the company was able to get him a permanent visa although the process was not without problems.

At Intel, for example, the number of people from India is surprisingly high maybe because of the good business Intel has with India. This example shows that it is possible to get a visa to the US when you are well qualified professionally and your qualifications are in demand, especially in the high tech.

I believe that the tendency now on is to allow more skilled workers to get visas and create a restrict quota for farm workers. That is what people are talking on the radio here.

In the industries, people from Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, for example, are very common working as blue collars. Their presence is noticeable here in my town, a lot of Asians. Sometimes I joke with my American friends that the Asians are silently invading the US while everyone focus on the Mexicans and Latinos.

Brazilians are everywhere in many professions however most of my compatriots here seems to have a preference for the commerce or food services. One thing is a fact, a mayor in New Jersey is quite happy with the presence of the Brazilians in his town after they have recovered the economy of a part of the city. I wish the Brazilians could do the same in Brazil, but that is a different story already extensively discussed here in previous forums.

Entering the gov't.?? If you mean entering the U.S. I would have to see some numbers on that. I know one thing, that in the last 4-5 years brazilians have been the #1 perpetrators CAUGHT entering the U.S. illegally in the category known as OTM (other than Mexican).

IMO, any type of anmesty is not a good thing. You can't reward those for circumventing the system, while many of those that went/going through the system the correct way are still waiting in line.
Native Brazilian question
written by Guest, May 31, 2006
With the exception of native American Indians, all Americans are immigrants or decendents of immigrants.

Is the same true for Brasil? Is the majority of the country immigrant or decendents of immigrants? What is the process to immigrate to Brazil now?
Not quite right.
written by Guest, May 31, 2006
The "native American indians" also were immigrants, they just arrived much earlier, and in several waves.

The above questions remain about Brazil's policies.

The U.S. currently accepts 1,000,000 legal immigrants per year. The illegal immigrants number at least an additional 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 per year.

Is there "reciprocity" from Brazil?
Is there \"reciprocity\" from Brazil?

We don\'t all think alike
written by Guest, May 31, 2006
What is this “properly questioned”? Do you mean it like? If properly questioned most Americans do not support the illegal invasion of Iraq. There is no “proper” way to ask such questions. In meaning so you would need one distinct answer. And illegal immigration/invasion on it’s very terms will never have a distinct answer.

As a U.S. born American I say come on over my South American friends. Please help me overthrow this government. The Americas need to unite. If a people should be expelled from our shores, it should be the Europeans. The smug looks on their faces. I see them all the time in NYC. They can buy their perfume at home, but they choose to come here, so they can talk bad about the place when they get home. Oh? You’re better then us? Then stay home on your next thirty day holiday. And take the inbred Bush family back with you. I’m just angry perhaps. This is no way to live. There has to be a better way.

There are about 55,000 legal immigrants from India to the USA and about 55,000 legal immigrants from China to the USA in a year and about 175,000 legal immigrants from Mexico, to the USA.
India has almost ten times the population of Mexico and China has more than 10 times the population of Mexico.
Yes, immigrants from other countries beside Mexico receive visas, but when you compare the amount of visas issued to Mexicans compared to the other countries in the world, there is rampant discrimination being practiced against non-mexicans.
In addition, there are more illegal immigrants entering the USA than legal ones. Over half of the illegal immigrants entering the USA are Mexicans. When a US immigrant boasts of the sucess of targeted enforcement programs, and cites a 92% reduction in illegal immigrants from Brazil, this is racist. Federal agents were sent from the USA to Brazil, to investigate airline employees and others involved in assisting Brazilians in illegally entering the USA. Even before the targeted crackdown on Brazilians, the number of Brazilians entering the USA was a trifling, compared to the millions of Mexicans that swarm across the border into the USA. When one country is the source of more illegal immigrants than the other 180 countries in the world combined, there is racist discrimination taking place in favor of the Mexicans and against non-Mexicans.

Correction to my last post: I meant to say a US Goverment immigration enforcement official boasted of the success of the targeted enforcement program against Brazilians. He was being interviewed on CNN and claimed that this targed program had reduced illegal immigration by Brazilians. I like Brazilians and was appalled at the way Brazil had been targeted for special enforcement action.

No other country in the world would allow a neighboring nation to dump millions of it's uneducated citizens on it's shores. The argument that the illegal workers do labor that American citizens don't want to do is false. I see illegal immigrants doing construction jobs that you used to have to be a craftsman(plumber, electrician, carpenter et.al)to do. The U.S. should insist that these illegal workers not be allowed to sent billions of dollars out of the country.
As to the poster that claims the resistance felt by Mexican illegal immigrants is racsist, that's crap. If Mexicans want to retain their culture then remain in Mexico. Besides being a Mexican isn't ethnic group.
If I went to Brazil I would learn the language and something about the country that would enable to relate to the people.
Mexicans in america insist on speaking spanish as if it were some sort of code. It's not. It's annoying.

The person who wrote "If properly questioned most Americans do not support illegal immigration/invasion." probably was referring to a number of polls in the U.S. recently that had been constructed so that the responses from the persons being polled matched a pre-conceived result for the poll.

It is relatively easy to construct a set of polling questions that can yield a desired result. It's actually harder to construct a poll that gives an unbiased result.

I would suggest that poll writers consider making the extra effort to come up with a poll that will yield unbiased results if they want to be believed.

To American Observer: The Brazilians were NOT targeted "at the Mexican Border". The USA government sent law enforcement agents to Brazil. If the US government was serious about defending the USA border with Mexico and deployed its resources there it would stop the invasion. Instead, it attempts to strain out non-Mexicans, while maintaining a porous border with Mexico. Rio de Janerio has 40,000 law enforcement officers,to protect just one city. Yet to defend our entire southern border from the invasion by illegal aliens, the US deploys only 12,000 or less border patrol agents. If the USA was truly serious about stopping illegal aliens,(and I wish it was) it would defend our Southern border with as many troups as it deploys to defend the Iraq people from each other. The US govenment has no intention of using these type of resouces to defend our border with Mexico. Instead, it uses a system which discriminates against non-mexicans to the point where more Mexicans illegally enter the USA, then from all of the rest of the Countries in the world. The US government has the miltary resources to protect defend and protect the USA border but it doesn't. It has even taken 400 border patrol agents off of the Southern Border and sent them to Iraq to defend Iraq. Meanwhile, who is defending the USA's border?
RE: An American
written by Guest, May 31, 2006
I agree with you. If the military of your country can spend billions of dollars to defend Iraq (or oil, whatever) then they should have the resources to protect the border without building a new "Berlin" wall.

As a Brazilian living in the USA, legally, I think that the Americans are doing to my people a huge favor in not allowing them to come here illegally by any means. Although I agree that if a Brazilian wants to immigrant to the US he/she should try it legally. I did and I got it.

I work here, pay my taxes and support the systems. There are Brazilians here who do not pay taxes and are buying properties in Brazil with the money "saved". That is not fair for the Americans and legal immigrants.

However, I think that sending back 12 million people is irrational. It is legally and economically expensive. What to do with the parents of US children? What to do with the children? The legal battles for every case would tax the American judicial system for years. The US is not a lawless country operated by an absolute power. Every immigrant caught illegally would have a right for a hearing. Could you imagine that to be done for millions of people? It will bring the system to a halt.

What about the economic costs of deporting everyone? You first need to arrest them (most will takes their changes in courts throughout the US), then you need to run a triage and identification (you do not want to send a Brazilian, for example, to Portugal or a Guatemalan to Salvador), you have to lock them for months while the INS bureaucratic process is on the way, you have to provide transportation, etc.

Then you have the human rights issues, parents of American children, etc.

Is there really an easy solution? I do not think so but you are free to think otherwise.
An American
written by Guest, May 31, 2006
I agree that the issue of what to do with the illegal aliens currently in the USA is an intractable problem (and I think the commonly used estimate of 12 million is low). Just two years ago a figure of six million was commonly being used. The number of illegal aliens is literally climbing daily as they pour across the border from Mexico by the thousands daily.
The USA does have the resources to guard its border and the failure to do that only causes the problem of the illegal aliens in the USA to worsen as the number of illegal aliens in the USA increases by millions every year. I agree with the previous poster that it is unfair that American citizens, and legal resident aliens pay taxes, while many of the illegal aliens do not. While the illegal aliens from Mexico claim that they are bringing diversity to the USA the opposite is true. With more illegal aliens from Mexico streaming in than from all of the other 180 countries in the world combined, diveristy in the USA is drowning in a sea of illegal aliens from Mexico.

The USA was considered racist when it passed the Chinese exclusion act. It was also considered racist when it adopted immigration quotas that favored whites from Europe. Its current immigration inforcement policies (lack of adequate enforcement) favors mestizos from Mexico to such an extent that more of them enter the USA each year than all other immigrants from all of the other countries in the world. This favoring of mestizos from Mexico, over asians, africans, and europeans, is just as racist as previous policies that favored or excluded certain races.

I agree with American man's comment about letting in only Brazilians and the USA would be a better place.
In the alternative, since the USA isn't effectly enforcing its southern border, it should be fair and give everyone that wants to come the the USA a visa. Brazil is about the 5th or 6th most populous country in the world, so there are lots of Brazilians that could come to America. Likewise, Africans and Asians, and Europeans would also have an equal opportunity to immigrate to America. The current situation of lax southern border enforcement and strick visa requirements for those arriving by airplane, does vastly favor one country over all the rest.

I agree that the vast majority of Americans want the immigration laws enforced. But the executive branch is not enforcing the current laws, and there is no guarantee that it would enforement new ones with bigger penalties. A few years ago the US Justice Department filed about 250 actions against employers for employing illegal actons. Last year it filed only four such cases. Laws with bigger penalties are good, but we also need new elected and appointed officials that will enforce the laws.

Although it may be logistically impossible to deport 12 million illegals, as well as extremely costly, there is NOTHING illegal, nor unconstitutional, about deporting illegal aliens....it happens all the time, just because it would be done in mass doesn't change the laws, nor the constitutionality of the situation.

I did not write that it was legally impossible to deport 12 million people. I wrote that would be impossible to deport like the WAY people here suggested.

Why? Well, you cannot simply arrest and immediately deport any person in the US without any judiciary procedure. If you are an American then you know that well.

The US provides laws for any person to appeal in any circumstances. An illegal immigrant living in the US is a human being with rights to legal assistance.

Am I wrong? Please, tell me.

The building has already fallen for places like Brasil and México. And the rebuilding is at a very slow pace. There are walls, but no roof or door. People who have lived with these conditions for decades are more prepared for basic human survival. The U.S. on the other hand is rotting at a faster pace than it’s people can comprehend. A vast majority of the U.S. population have no idea how to survive at the level needed for anything lower than their currant individual living status. At the current rate of progress I give the U.S. perhaps forty more years. Things may change, but not likely.

There will be a Free Land once again in this part of the Americas. But it won’t happen until the U.S. as we know it falls. The U.S. has and will win a few more battles along the way, but it will ultimately lose the war.

I too have the same dream. Usually it’s followed by nightmares of Bush and his greed and moral obsessed frat brothers. Suddenly a vision comes over me… I see his fanatical/political likeness in the Whitehouse for another twenty or so years. The situation in the U.S. will only get worse before the revolution. Sad also is that our nation’s atrocities affect other counties as well. And developing countries are the worst hit.
My encounters with Europeans both in the U.S. and abroad have never gone well. I should not lump them all as Euro. As it has been mostly with people from France, Spain, Germany, and Italy. When discussion comes to politics and world affairs the U.S. is talked as being the worst of evil and South America as that problem over there. When reminded who colonized/traded/slaved this part of the world and other countries as well its as if they have lost all memory.
But this is nice… words is what its all about, no stone throwing, and people should not fear saying what they feel.

There is a previous post that says that USA, has never been defeated. I am old enough to remember the Vietnam War. In the end, the USA lost that war and North Vietnam won the war. The USA is currently under an invasion of the worst kind. A civilian invasion. In military invasions, the local population usually outnumbers the military invaders and is able to conduct a guarilla type warfare, that eventually succeds, although in some instances it takes decades or even centuries. However, in a civilian invasion the invaders come in such vast numbers that they eventually displace the local population. The native american Indians experianced this when Europeans, who were just looking for a better life, settled what is now Canada, the USA and Australia. Now, the USA is being overun by Mexicans, who refer to American citizens as "the natives".

Defending a countries' borders is a countries' soverign right. When a country lacks the will or ability to defend its borders it is overun by immigrants that are just seeking a better life. The English colonists, who were just seeking a better life, displaced Native American Indians from their lands. The Spanish did likewise in Mexico, most of Central America and part of South America. Portuguese Colonists did likewise in Brazil.
As the English colonies formed the USA, they expanded Westward. American immigrants just seeking a better live poured into part of Northern Mexico (now called Texas) in such numbers that they eventually were able to successfully rebel against Mexico and take the land from Mexico. At the rate Mexicans are now illegally pouring across the border into the USA, Mexicans will evetually succeed in the "reconquest". Mexicans will form the majority of the inhabitants of the USA and take the homes and property in the USA away from the Non-Mexicans, just as the English, Spanish, Portuguese and other European immigrants that were "just looking for a better life, took away from the Indians, their land and property.
The US government with its lax enforcement of its border, is allowing this invasion by Mexico to occur. Mexico has strict immigration laws. In Mexico illegal immigration is a felony. There were news reports a month ago, that the Mexican authorities shot and killed a black Mexician citizen, because due to his dark skin, they thought he was an illegal immigrant.
At the USA Embassy in Mexico City the line for visas for the USA forms before dawn. Seventy percent of the Mexicans that apply for visas for the USA receive them.
The USA government discrminates against Brazil and many other countries in the issuance of visas. Only a small number of the Brazilians that apply for visas for the USA, receive them
. The USA needs to stop its racist immigration practices, which allow millions of Mexicans to illegally pour into the USA each year and also allows more legal visas to Mexians than to Brazilians and Africans. Brazil is about the 6th most populous county in the world. Brazil has also twice as many citizens as Mexico. In fairness, Brazilians should receive almost twice as many visas as Mexicans. The USA should also strictly enforce its border with Mexico. Otherwise, Mexicans illegally pour in by the millions. Lack of border enforcement discrminates against Brazilians, Asians, Africans, etc., they do not have a border with the USA and most can not get visas.
If the USA does not defend its border and be fair with Brazil and other Non-Mexicans in issuing visas, the Mexicans will suceed in their civilian invasion and reconquest. Mexicans will outnumber Americans, taking the land and property from Americans, Just as the Americans took Texas from Mexico.

written by Guest, June 07, 2006
I think that you misunderstood. "Norte Americano" is not a term of derision in Brazil, and neither is "Americano".

In Brazil, "gringo" basically means "foreigner", although in 15 years in Brazil, I have never had anyone refer to me as a "gringo", either to my face or within my hearing. If nationality comes up at all, I am referred to as an “Americano”.

Also, to respond to some other “threads from the past”:

More than once I have had a Brazilian address me in English, and when I replied in Portuguese, they say essentially "I'm sorry, I thought that you were an American". I reply, “Well, I am an American”, to which they reply “But you are speaking good Portuguese!”. Getting taken (correctly) for an American may have something to do with the fact that I’m white, 195 cm tall, and weigh about 140 kg.

Modesty aside, my spoken Portuguese is pretty good. Sometimes people have asked me if I’m from Santa Catarina. One of my friends told me that I had “captured the music of the language”. Some of the posts here have complained about Brazilian Portuguse sounding like “whining”, etc. They haven’t yet understood that these intonations are the key to speaking correct Brazilian Portuguese. On the down side, my written Portuguese sucks.

I have made it a point over the years to talk with Brazilians from all walks of life, in the city and in the countryside. Right now it’s fashionable among some of the educated to be anti-American, and particularly, anti-Bush. Among the common people, however, there is an obvious respect and admiration for the U.S. and its people. Don’t let some of the anti-American posts here deceive you – most of the people of Brazil think highly of Americans, and I think that the people of Brazil are deserving of equal respect.

Technological advancement aside, and in spite of the many problems that have been discussed on this web site, in some ways Brazil reminds me of what the U.S. must have been like in the 19th century. I think that the coming century will be one of great opportunity for Brazil. However, the people of Brazil need to “step up to the plate” and make the necessary and difficult changes in order to realize the promise of the future.

Well, I can tell you that in my 8 years here I've been referred to "gringo" numerous times, and by some of my brazilian friends. And I can also tell you that when I've been introduced to a couple of people and they ask me where I'm from, and I respond, "sou americano", I've had a couple respond, "eu tambem, sou americano do sul".

Show me the stats for that number....I simply don't believe it.

Afterall, if getting an american visa for a mexican is so easy, a whopping 70% approval rate, why are they hoarding in mass to the border to enter illegally?

As far as securing our borders, that appears to be exactly what we're doing right now, and will be doing in the future, afterall, every single bill, the house bill and the senate bill, BOTH contain language that will secure our borders.

I was misunderstood as usual. I’m just sick of all the we are the ultra superpower known as America and we are Americans. Vulgarity has gotten the worst of me. I do believe the visa requirements for Brazilians are too strict and for Mexicans it is basically a free pass as far as getting into the U.S. “legally”. I still feel strongly as to who are we as U.S. citizens to recognize someone as illegal. According to the closed borders we must protect the U.S. at all cost people. They themselves would be considered illegal as well under the very same laws their ancestors put into place. Under what right did they have to make such a law in the first place? When they themselves came here uninvited.
Under these An American citizens we have among us the very rights to be free they so proudly protect are being taken away from under their upturned noses as they masturbate to the flag singing God Bless America.
The U.S. will fall after becoming a near dictatorship in the next forty years. Only those with privilege will be free. And even that will only be provided they belong to the right political party. For the rest of us our rights will continue to diminish. It will only be after the revolutions that we will see freedom again. And we will see that it is those that some wanted to keep out that will help us in the coming battles.

Maybe this use of "gringo" is a regional thing. I can tell you honestly, I've spent a lot of time in various parts of Brazil and have never been called a gringo.

In any case, there doesn't seem to be a derogatory sense to the word in Brazilian Portuguese, the way that there is in the Spanish-speaking parts of Latin America.

Ahh.

The bitterness of the last line: "Yes, Peace To All, even the white man that slaved and killed many of my people!" tells it all. Like white people are the only ones that ever do anything wrong.

I can tell you, when I was 10 years old and crossing the border (legally) from Mexico to the U.S. with my grandfather, a Mexican border guard stuck the barrel of his loaded service revolver into my stomach and c**ked it. His finger was on the trigger. He laughed like it was a big joke. Every time I hear El Presidente Fox talking about "human rights" for illegal immigrants in the U.S., I think of this incident in my life and see his statements as the hypocrisy that they are.

written by Guest, June 07, 2006
In an earlier post I said that 70% of the Mexicans that apply for visas receive them and pointed out that this is discrimination against Non-Mexicans that want to come to the USA such as Brazilians, who have a MUCH lower success rate in obtaining a visa.
A later poster asked in disbelief for the source. Indeed the amount of favoritism that the USA grants to Mexicans and in turn the discrimination against non-Mexicans is astonishing. The source of the statistic was an assocated press article written by Will Weissert, and published on June 5, 2006. The article says that nearly half of the persons that are currently illegally in the USA, entered legally on Visas, and then did not leave when their visa expired. The article when on to say and I quote: "Of course, getting a visa in the first place is a challenge. Lines at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City form before dawn. Applicants pay $100 for an appointment, bringing proof of employment, savings and family and community roots. Sill, Embassy spokeswoman Judith Bryan said most applicants are approved - about 70 percent."
END QUOTE

With 70% being approved that leaves 30% that are turned down and most of them are probably among those that illegally pour across the border. The article does not say how long the bureaucratic process takes to obtain a visa, but I would speculate that there are many that simply to not want to deal with the extensive paperwork and bureaucrats, etc. and instead, simply on their own or with the help of a hired smuggler, rush the border. The point of the article was that in addition to all those swarming across the border illegally, there are almost as many that use legally issued temporary visa to get across the border and then violate the visa and stay permanently.
When asked for the source of the statistic I went back to see if the associated press article was still available on the internet. At the moment is still available and here is the website address where I found it:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060605/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/mexico_us_overstays_2

In going back to find the article, I went to www.yahoo.com and clicked on yahoo news. At the top of the toolbar, I selected World News. When the world news page came up, there was a search box near the top of the page. In the seach box I typed in visa overstays immigration. That brought up a listing of links to several articles, including this one.

From an article about Christopher Columbus, an Italian who spoke and wrote Spanish peppered with Portuguese, a sort of commercialized Latin.

“Before he left Spain for his second voyage, he had been directed by Ferdinand and Isabella to maintain friendly, even loving relations with the natives. However, during his second voyage he sent a letter to the monarchs proposing to enslave some of the native peoples, specifically the Caribs, on the grounds of their aggressiveness. Although his petition was refused by the Crown, in February 1495 Columbus took 1600 Arawak (a different tribe, who were hunted by the Carib) as slaves. 560 slaves were shipped to Spain; 200 died en route, probably of disease, and of the remainder, half were ill when they arrived. After legal proceedings, the survivors were released and ordered to be shipped home. Others of the 1600 were kept as slaves for Columbus' men in the Americas, and Columbus recorded using slaves for sex in his journal. A remaining 400 captives, for whom Columbus had no use, were released; they fled into the hills, making, according to Columbus, prospects for their future capture dim. Rounding up the slaves led to the first major battle between the Spanish and the natives in the New World.”

Nice start! Even before they went north. And the European even died still believing he had discovered and conquered part of India. So now we have people mostly of strong European decent saying, wait a minute, you can’t travel around the Americas or the world without papers. Oh, you want to go to the U.S. then wait in line so we can fleece you and then reject you. This is what it has come to? Now that you have yours, f**k the other guy that is just trying to make something of his live? What a way to treat people.

And my pure blood Sioux grandfather (I’m half Sioux by my father’s pure blood and mixed by my mother’s) still tells of the stories his father told him about the massacres. We had no chose but to fight back. Do you really want to go back to a situation like that?

You can only push a people so far before they fight back. Especially after they have given so much help and land to the newcomers. Do we really want a return to this? I fear we are headed in this direction. It amazes me that people that have been here only a few hundred years think they have been here since creation. In that they feel the need to tell people where they can go and what they can do. One could say after the white man cleansed the land he wants to keep it clean. When it was in fact the white man who soiled the earth with blood and greed.

We are all immigrants throughout the world, the only difference among us is how long ago it happened.

The ancient way of dealing with immigrants was violence. If someone entered your territory without your permission, they either left or there was a fight.

Now in place of that we have documents. Isn't this an improvement? I think it is. People who immigrate without documents are in effect asking for a return to the ancient ways.
Dual Citizen Brazilian/American commenti

Lets be honest people, Brazil and America are two different places yet with same types of people. Unless your a native american or brazilian indian we can consider that one of your family members made a choice of one of these countries when world wars were in place.
I can say that brazil has 5x more resources than america will ever have. What brazil lacks is what america has and vice-versa. Question is though if a major world war broke out who do you think would starve first? Brazil or America ? America imports everything , brazil exports everything. These two countries clash hard on alot of topics. But one thing remains, brazil can feed itself and still export. America relies on other duties. While brazil is the number one country in the world producing the bible america is the number one in killing.

When the invading Mexican Mestizos, outnumber the Americans, I'm sure that is what will happen to the "American white man (and women)".
After all, when the European immigrants that "were just seeking a better life" poured into what is now the USA, the Native Americans were eventually outnumbered, forced from their homes, and deported to reservations. Their land was taken from them and given to the immigrants.
What the previous poster refers to as the "American White Man" will be in for the same fate from the Mexican Mestizos, who will sooner than most people realize, become the majority of the population of the USA.

So let the Mexican's do to the white man what the white man did to us? That would mean the white man would have to learn life is unfair. The early European immigrants were not just seeking a better life. They came with intent to conquere.
An American
written by Guest, June 09, 2006
The Mexican Mestizos that illegally pour over the border by the millions, likewise have the intent to conquer. A large part of what is now the Southwest USA previously belonged belonged to Mexico. So, the Mexican Mestizos that are open about their intentions do not say "conquer" instead, they refer to it as the reconquest.
Bottom line, when a nation is either unable or unwilliing to defend its borders, the hordes that pour across the border will end up taking the land and property for themselves.
The Native American Indians were unsucessful at defending their land against the European immigrants that poured in and the Indians lost their land and property.
Mexico was unable to sucessfully defend against the swarms of American immigrants that poured into Texas and Mexico lost Texas.
As the world turns it is now the Mexican Mestizos that are illegally pouring over the border. They will displace the Americans from their lands and property, just as the the Americans previously displaced the Native American Indians.

The first President Bush was George H.W. Bush. His son is President George W. Bush and his grandson, is George P. Bush.
The grandson George P. Bush is being groomed to be the next (third)generation President George Bush.
George P. Bush is half-Mexican, his mother is a Mexcian that was born in Mexico City. There are more illegal aliens from Mexico in the United States than from all of the other 180 countries in the world. This deluge of illegal aliens from Mexico is because of the racist policies of the US government. The USA government that grants 70% of all visa requests for visas by Mexicans, knowing that most Mexicans remain in the USA illegally after their visas expire. Likewise, the US government does not properly defend the border. The US government sends ten times more troops to defend Iraq than it does to defend our own border.
The current President George Bush who is making a sham of enforcing immigration laws and has no real intention of enforcing any new ones. President George W. Bush is pushing for a "path to citizenship" for the illegal aliens. Most of the illegal aliens are from Mexico and he wants their votes so that the family dynasty will continue, when the next generation, George P. Bush runs for President.
While the current President George W. Bush says he is going to have a guest worker for "temporary" workers, under the bill passed by the Senate, when the "temporary guest worker" gets to the USA, he or she is then eliable for permanent residence status "a green card" and after five years, is eligable for citizenship.
The hordes of illegal aliens pouring in from Mexico are depressing wages, lowering our countries standard of living, overwhelming public services at taxpayer expense, such as schools and hospitials. By working for low wages, what used to be high paying union jobs in meat packing plants, construction, etc.for American workers are converted low paying jobs for illegal aliens.
Our crime rates are rising in the areas that are beeing flooded with illegal aliens.
Yet, the current President George Bush is pushing for a "path to citizenship" so that they can become voters by the time the next generation George P. Bush, runs for president. As half-Mexican and a self professed latino, he will oversee the transition from a white dominated government, to a Mestizo government as the Mexican Mestizos become the majority of the population of the USA.

Illegal Aliens from Mexico do vote. They just do it llegally.
The illegal Mexican Mextizo invaders illegally buy some forged identity documents, then they take their forged documents and use them to illegally obtain a drivers license. They use the drivers license for ID to register to vote.
The people in one State put an iniative on the ballot to pass a law to require that proof of citizenship be shown in order to register to vote. When the election was held the voters passed the law.
The advocacy groups for the illegal alien Mestizo invaders protested against the law. A law suit was filed claiming that the new law violated the illegal aliens "rights" and that because of the new law, they were afraid to register to vote.
The judge ruled in favor of the advocates for the illegal aliens. The judge issued an injuction (court order) which prohibited the law from taking effect.
Most of the illegal alien Mexico Mestizos do not speak English. However, the Federal government has a law that requires election ballots be printed in foreign languages for those that can't speak English.
So when the illegal alien Mestizo invaders from Mexico show up at the polls to vote, they are given ballots printed in Spanish so they can vote for the politicians that betray American citizens and do not enforce our immigration laws.

Unless you actively seek all sides of what happened in the “discovery” of the Americas and the rising of the United States then that is all you will ever see. Like my father and his fathers before him, I was born and raised in what is now the northern U.S. this lineage goes back at least two millennia. Though the white man tried and with some succeeded, no citizenship test or visa required here. The U.S. as you know it and some of us were forced to get used to will fall, by the very hands of your elected president Bush. The poster said that we live in an age where there is "plenty for everyone" A third of the world's population lives on two dollars a day or less.
The USA does have one of the highest standards of living in the world. But, with the passage of NAFTA, many factories closed in the USA and reopened in Mexico, with US citizens losing their jobs to the Mexicans.
With WTO, more factories in the USA closed and those jobs went to China and other countries.
The USA now has the world's largest trade deficit and borrows over half a billion dollars a year to pay is current account bills (for its imports). For jobs that can not be exported, such as construction, illegal aliens from Mexico, take those jobs and then send part of their wages back to Mexico, which amounts to tens of Billions of dollars sent from the USA to Mexico. In addition, The USA buys more oil from Mexico than Saudia Arabia.
With all of the money flowing out of the United States to Mexico and other countries, the USA is rapidly going bankrupt and will eventually suffer a currency collapse.
When that happens, the USA will no longer be able to pay for its imports. There are so many illegal aliens from Mexico pouring into the USA, that with so many more mouths to feed, the USA now imports more food than it exports.
With the illegal aliens from Mexico driving wages down in the USA, the USA, will indeed soon be like Mexico, only worse. Mexico is one of the major exporters of oil. The USA does not have that income source.
Congradulations to those who advocate in favor of hordes of illegal Mexicans that are invading Mexico, as sooner than people realize the USA living conditions in the USA will be like those in Mexico or worse.

Those products can be made here in the U.S. just as well, if the American gets off his consumer ass and demands his products be made here. This includes food, which by the ton is discarded/wasted every day in the good old U.S. of A. Greed! Greed! Greed! Oh, they say the process of change takes time. When will it start? When the smugglers have that much money, it does create a huge temptation. These bribes were from Mexican smugglers, not Brazilians.

I have to love you guys! You contradict your own reply in the same reply. Also the U.S. directly imports by its own military more drugs than any smuggler could dream of. This is regardless of who is elected as the volume increases annually. There are certain policies in this country so set in stone they can only be physically changed not changed by vote. These instances of bust ($500,000 or even 50mm are considered petty cash to both sides) are just to make the average folk think something is being done about the problem. Keep your faith in elections and your elected officials, nothing will change.

The U.S. as we know it will fall. Then you will see how a county for and by the people should be run. We’ll see no color, no financial differences, there will be plenty for all, all will share there knowledge, all will work to create community, and all will be free.

Spain participated in the slave trade and at one time blacks were 50% of the population of Mexico. Where are they now? Only 1% of the population of Mexico is black. Mexico's dirty little secret is that what became of them. Abject racism against blacks continues in Mexico. A couple of months ago, one of the few remaining blacks was shot and killed by the Mexican police. They thought he was an illegal immigrant, because he was black.
Last year Mexico issued postage stamps as with a black character made to look like a monkey. When some black leaders in the USA protested this racism,
President Fox of Mexico refused to apologize.
The last poster makes a claim as to what the USA will look like when it is overrun by Mexicans and the Mexicans take control of the government. To see what a country that is run by Mexicans looks like, just look at Mexico.
A country that has natural resources that should make it wealthy, such as huge oil exports, yet it is so full of crime, poverty, corruption and drug lords, that even the Mexicans can stand it and illegally pour across the border.
One of the worst problems with the Mexicans is their arrogance. After having made a wreck of their own country, when they come to the United States, they act like they have the superior culture and want to impose the Mexican ways upon the USA.
The previous poster said to keep our current politicians in office. Well of course, if you want the USA to be remade in the image of Mexico, then reelect the current politicans that allow the invasion of America by Mexican Mestizos to continue.
If you want to save America, then vote for politicians that will deport all of the illegal Mexican invaders, fortify our borders and concentrate our military forces on our own border to defend our own country, The United States of America.
Help!!!!
written by Guest, June 14, 2006
First off, I did not say to keep our current politicians in office. What I did say is there are policies in place that will not change by vote alone. They are so set that only physical force will change them. As they rewrite and change one particular part of a law they reinforce another with such language as to cancel out any change at all. And the Mexicans will not take over the U.S. as you say. Oh, there will be change, but not by their hands. Oh, they will have helped the cause, but their way of life will quickly be their downfall. Others will only tolerate them for so long. This sound racist I know, but what can I say, they too will be their own defeat. You’re right on some accounts, while others you are way off. On the drug front, we need to stop the market from within. You have no idea how frustrating this country is to me right now. Most Mexicans that are deported, return within a few weeks and are not prosecuted.
The US. Attorney General Alberto Gonzoles family came from Mexico. While the USA does have some natural resources remaining, such as an abundant supply of coal, in other areas, it has largely consumed or depleted its natural resourses. For example, although the USA was once self-sufficent in crude oil, its crude oil production has been declining for a long time and the USA imports over half of its crude oil needs. Brazil on the other hand, has been increasing its discovery and and production of crude oil and this year reached self-sufficiency and may become an exporter of crude oil in the future.
Brazil is the worlds largest exporter of iron ore another area in which it has the advantage over the USA.
...
written by Guest, June 20, 2006
Your right, on the other hand you’re wrong. Oil production in the US has been declining steadily for the past twenty odd years. US iron ore mining has been in a sharp decline for over twice as long. The cause is not depletion of these natural resources, its cost, and has been since the forties. The both of these resources are much cheaper to import than produce here.

Like the song; they say that your ore ain’t worth digging, it’s much cheaper down in a South American town where the miners work almost for nothing.

As an American, I hate some Americans. Sorry about the vitriol spouted by that jerk above. I admire all immigrants from all places, and unlike that idiot above recognize that we were all immigrants at one time. Many of our descendants came in the face of people who hated scots, than irish and chinese, than germans and eastern europeans, then southern europeans, and so on and so forth. The hate is constant, but there's a silent majority who understand that immigration makes this country better, and much more interesting. we'll win the debate eventually. in the meantime please don't hate all americans. just that guy above.
