I’m slowly awakening from a fitful sleep on a too-long plane ride from Miami Beach. I changed planes in Rio, and am now beginning to descend into Confins International Airport, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. But I’m still partly asleep, and wondering what I am doing so far from home. I also ponder what adventures are in store for me.

Thanks Dr. Wardle written by Guest,

To often we have preconceptions of American's, and their ways. It is important to know that just because we may disagree on policy, there are many American's whom we can consider our friends. I for one will learn more about the Friendship Council.

A good deed written by Guest,

I would like to show my appreciation for Mr. Wardle's effort in helping to build the playground for the poor children in Sete Lagoas (a town I know well). I hope that he will be back to Minas once again to visit the state more broadly and get the opportunity to know also the very nice towns we have in the south and the interesting historical cities surrounding Belo Horizonte. There are very beautiful natural parks and very pleasantly looking valleys and mountains there.
By the way, there are some other people who immigrated from Europe and Asia to Brazil, including people from the Slavic countries.

What an honest person you seem to be. Nice comments. Nice story...but i thought the BR state to US State sister city was funny. I am glad they are not comparisons. I've been to B.H. and it's one of the nicest places. I'd live there any day but NEVER in SP. SP has too much crime and it's not what it used to be anymore. Even the people there aren't the same anymore.

WISE COMMENTS, Dr. WARDLE I was pleased by reading Mr. Wardle's article. It's not clear, though, whether he visited Ouro Preto, my hometown, or simply learned by reading about the Baroque history of Minas Gerais. Our centenary-plus School of Mines (now part of the Federal University of Ouro Preto) has exchange programs with the School of Mines of Colorado. If Dr. Wardle ever come to Minas Gerais again, please call on us in Ouro Preto. We will be glad to show him around. By the way, being a touristic town, I wonder whether this volunteer program can help us organize a Convention & Visitors Bureau in Ouro Preto to bolster local economy by consistently atracting more visitors. How does it work? Is there any knowlegeable person in this area in the program? Marcio A DeFreitas, Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brasil. E-mail address: cole@uai.com.br

Fond Memories written by Guest,

Three years ago at this very time I was living in the city of Sao Paulo in the neighborhood of Santa Cecilia/Higienopolos. During my three months there I was fortunate enough to meet wonderful people and now have very specific memories of typically Brasilian tastes, aromas, sounds, and sights. I will always remember my first visit to a Churrascaria, a refreshing sip of Guarana with an orange slice, the scent of Dama da Noite in the evening after a rain, the amplified chimes on trucks selling filled propane tanks early in the mornings. I also saw the poverty of the homeless and the security you described. But more than those I will remember the parties that did not start until after 11:00 pm and the warmth of the Brasilian people. To our shame, so many North Americans have no knowledge of this beautiful country and its rich diversity. Thank you for reminding of this.

Facinating article, it was very inspiring! All the countries of the Americas espaecially Brazil and United States should be working closer together and getting to know each other better. After all, the countries of the Americas have more in common with each other than they do with the rest of world. More service, cultural, scientific, and bussiness endeavors should be taken up between the 2 largest countries of the Americas. Brazil has a lot to learn from the EUA and the EUA has a lot to learn from Brasil.

Congratulations for your good job representing my country ! I`m from Sao Paulo state , Tupa city , and now I`m living by myself in California, in a year like an exchange student ( Rotary program ). I`m glad that you had the opportunite to see Minas Gerias state , is one of my favorites ( history , culture, folklore ). I`ll use your shared experiences in my project to the hight school here. It`s different to see a vision from an american about Brazil , and a vision from me , that lived 16 years there . Good luck for you ( Boa sorte para voce ), and I hope that one day you `ll be able to come back over there . Martha Camillo Jordao.
