In a single sweep of the pen, Bolivian President Evo Morales has rearranged the continent's entire geopolitical map. The May 1st decision to nationalize hydrocarbons placed South America's second largest gas reserves under state control.

I agree, if Brazil had any self respect it would have entered Alca in exchange for US bombing bolivia and show the damned bolivians not to f**k with others.
If we had been using your own resources its because you allowed us so shut up and give the oil back.
Brazil wants to be latin america leader but cant own a weak country as bolivia? Stupid, i say we enter alca get US help and throw the damned country into flames until the last bolivian says we can get it back.

Brasil shouldn\'t do anything! written by Guest,
June 02, 2006
Only America can fight an economic war, loose, and somehow come out the winner. I think South America is realigning. There are too many big players involved this time, and I think the Americans are willing to let others fight this war and pick up the pieces later. Brasil should give this one time and not become one of the pieces. If Brasil was ever in the need of real leadership, it is now.

Brazil should join America written by Guest,
June 02, 2006
I think all the Americas should unite into one super duper power. A pan-American Union. This is what will happen in the next 20 years. The American Counsel of Foreign Relations, the Trilateral Commision, the Bilderbergs, control America. The plan is to create a one world government. It will start off in E.U. then A.U. (American Union) , Asian Union, African Union. This is whats going to happen. The Americas will all use one currency called the "Amero" But the power will really be in the U.S.

your nuts you think america will unite with a bunch of loosers in the third world. No way. You think we are going to want to be like europe with no passports. That means all the brown skinned people will invade our beautiful country and canada also. No way man that will not happen. Not only that it would drag our economy down.

I think North Americans look at South Americas as loosers. South America has the brains and resources to be very independent but still can't seem to get it right, and the States, even though they are crazy try to loose but end winning. They don't even use there own oil reserves but use evrybody else's.

--Ya think?
South America has the brains and resources to be very independent
-- Resources YES, brains ? come on! Let´s be real here.
but still can't seem to get it right
-- That is the 500 years legacy for this region. Get use to it. It will never change.
and the States, even though they are crazy try to loose
-- How do they TRY and loose? I´m under the impression that you´re from South America with that type of brilliant analysis.
but end winning.
-- They sure as hell are winning lots in Iraq at the moment.
They don't even use there own oil reserves but use evrybody else's.
-- So..They can afford it.

From the outside looking in. written by Guest,

Yeah, what's going on in South America is very interesting, and few are watching it with attention it deserves, except perhaps the Chinese and the Americans. I really think the vultures are circling South America at the moment, including the French and Spanish for possible arms sales? But nothing is dead enough to eat. South America is a vacum begging to be filled and Chavez, with his endless billions might be the leader to do it. But what are his motivations, and why is he treating Brazil with such disrespect? The next few years are probably going to be interesting.

Simply a Leftist Propaganda ! written by Guest,

The FTAA is not dead. On the 34 countries or so only a very small minority is against the FTAA.
30 countries are quite willing to enter the FTAA.. Either they are already memebers, or they are in negotations to enter.
Quite funny then to say that the FTAA is dead when it is the exact opposite !
The majority of countries are begging to be part of the FTAA.
Even Morales, as strange as it is, has requested officially to enter in negotiation: So he could sell his natural gas at double the existing price. Funny then to read that the USA are imperialists when in fact it is Brazil and Argentina that are imperialist in their region. It is Brazil and Argentina that benefit the most of the Bolivian energy resources by not willing to pay the fair International market price, and not the USA. You are robbing Bolivia, not the USA !
Concerning the Brazilian energy resources, Petrobras has a de facto monopoly. The company is totally controlled (not owned) by the Government. Nothing is put at auctions for the drilling rights. There is no major foreign oil companies in Brazil, on purpose ! But Brazil/Petrobras are quite happy to receive drilling rights in other countries such as the Gulf of Mexico (USA).
Therefore reciprocity is not in the economic model or philosophy of the Brazilian politicians. The same is happening in different industries. You are quite demanding for the opening of others doors, and reluctant to open your own doors. Is the word Reciprocity banned from the Brazilian economic, politic, and philosophic strategy and model ? The same is happening in your own country. A minority has all the rights and the majority of population has no right, except to struggle under the injustice your model is ! So much that Brazil has the highest poverty rate in the world when compared to the GDP per capita of other equivalent countries.
SIMPLE ! A true shame !

The Economic War ! written by Guest,
June 03, 2006
The world is divided in 3 major regions : the Americas, the EU and Asia. If Latam and S.A. doesnt want to belong to the Americas, that is fine for the other regions. Simply because it weakens your region. Asia is booming economically, the EU is by now in fairly good political harmony ! The USA remains the engine of the world. Asia is booming with their industrial products, and SA and Latam is booming with their Basic Commodities.
It remains that no country in this planet ever became a rich and developed nations due to their basic and natural resources. Simply None ! Look at the triangle of the economic world. Basic commodities countries are selling their products mostly to Asia. Asia transforms them into a value added industrial products and then resell them to the rich nations of the USA, EU and Japan ! But as long as you are not really able to transform basic commodities into vaalue added products, you will remain somewhat a third world region.
Huge and really massive investments are needed to change that, starting by education, and sound economic policies ! Until then you will remain quite poor an d with a bleak long term future ! Just look at Brazil, They simply had the lowest economic growth of ALL developing nations. Your competition is advancisng at a far superior rate than you do. Simply stated, your lag in every single growth rate of social and economic development. This demonstrate that although you somewhat develop, you are totally mismanaged compared to other developing nations. nations.
While other developing countries are filling the gap faster with richer nations, Brazil doesnt ! You simply dont have a higher growth rate than rich nations ! Therefore you dont fill the gap and poor you will remain, whatever your government and politicians are telling you. The simply hide the reality to you. Numbers are numbers, stats are stats. Just compare them !
