Desertification Is Robbing Brazil of Close to US$ 1 Billion a Year PDF Print E-mail
Written by Marco Bahé

Caatinga, Brazil's semi-arid regionImagine a country with 937,000 square kilometers and a population of 18.5 million inhabitants - greater and more populated than the majority of European nations. This country lost 37% of its agricultural productivity in less than 20 years. The reduction in bovine cattle breeding was of 24%. Of goats, 11%. The losses are of US$ 800 million every year.

This imaginary country in fact exists and is called the Brazilian semi-arid. The phenomenon causing these losses - capable of scaring the coldest of economists - goes by the name of desertification.

In Brazil, the semi-arid regions represent 9.3% of national territory, concentrated in the Northeast. According to information from the Federal University of the state of Ceará, in the northeastern region of the country, 17.7% of the more than 900,000 squared kilometers are desertified already, directly or indirectly affecting more than 15 million people.

Before anything else, it is important to recall that desertification and drought are completely different things. The drought is a natural climatic and relatively frequent (but of irregular periodicity) phenomenon in semi-arid regions.

It is characterized by the poor distribution of rain in time and space. Desertification, on the other hand, is caused, principally, by human action - especially cutting down trees, excessive grazing and exaggerated or inadequate exploitation of arable lands.

On the contrary to what people normally think, semi-arid land is not synonymous of unproductiveness. According to information from the United Nations, the regions of semi-arid climate represent nearly one third of earth surface, are the home of about one billion people and are responsible for nearly 20% of world production of foods.

It is an area of great economic and social importance, but which can cause, when badly managed, serious imbalances in the climate and biodiversity.

The impacts of desertification are environmental (destruction of biodiversity, reduction of available water resources and reduction of agricultural productivity), social (migration to the great urban centers, increase in the already vulnerable poverty and destruction of family unity), and economic. They are three dissociable aspects of the phenomenon that fuel each other.

In the environmental area, there are many examples. Considering the most recent, studies developed by the Ministry of Mines and Energy together with the Ministry of Environment identified that in the last ten years alone, the forest cover in the caatinga (biome exclusive of the Brazilian semi-arid) dropped 30% in its total area and the main fact causing this situation is the operation of industrial parks that use native species of the caatinga as a source of energy for industrial operation.

Energy source

The General Forest Coordination of the Brazilian Environment and Renewable Natural Resource Institute (Ibama) concluded a study on the profile of the energy matrix of forest origin and showed that only 3% of the entire consumption of caatinga forest products or sub-products come from projects of sustainable forestry management.

Considering the current scenario that every day more companies use the forest as an energy source in their operations, be it for the economic advantages, be it for the fragility of the control systems of the management organizations, it is forecasted that in the next five years 20% of the remaining caatinga forest cover will have disappeared and also, in consequence, many species exclusive to this biome.

With the current scenario, the perspective is that in 2010 we will have only 30% remaining of the total area of the biome, according to the Laboratory of Forest Products of the Ibama.

According to the Esquel Foundation, organization that participates in the debate on desertification control in Brazil, between 1977 and 1994, the planted area for foodstuff production increased by 25%. The average rate in the reduction of agricultural productivity of foods (tons per hectare) in the Brazilian semi-arid is of about 2% to 3% per year (2.6% between 1977 and 1994).

In the region of the Araripe plateau, the states of Piauí and Pernambuco, also in the Northeast of Brazil, had a reduction in agricultural productivity of 2% per year, while in Ceará, the drop is of more than 3%. Average productivity in Ceará, however, was greater than in the other states. In other words, Pernambuco and Piauí had lower rates, but over a lower productivity average.

Concluding, society, the individual and agriculturists nowadays work 25% more than 20 years ago and manage only 63% of what was previously obtained (loss at an annual rate of 2.8%). It is as if the entire semi-arid region produced and lost 4.8 million tons per year. In values this means US$ 360 million.

"The production costs increase and may end up making agriculture unviable; one sees that the costs are not only financial, but also human: an effort all the time greater (child labor) to ensure survival of the group," states Silvio Santana, from Esquel.

Also according to the data gathered by the Esquel Foundation, the water sources at the Araripe plateau had annual reduction of 0.3% per year, between the 100 years prior to 1960. As of that year, the rate increased to 2.8% per year until 1980. Between 1980 and 1995 the rate reached 6% per year.

There is a clear acceleration of the processes. For the bad management of resources, the increase in desertified areas is of 3% annually, according to Alexandre Araújo, executive secretary at the Pernambuco Association of Nature Protection (Aspan).

Desertified World

The total degraded area in the whole world is of 61.3 million square kilometers. According to information from the United Nations, the desertification process puts out of production approximately 60,000 square kilometers of fertile lands per year.

The annual economic losses reach US$ 4 billion, with a recuperation cost of US$ 10 billion per year, in the whole world. Desertification already affects 30% of world territory, affects about 10 million new hectares annually in the whole planet, which represents a cost of US$ 42 billion.

In Brazil, according to a diagnosis carried out by the Brazilian Ministry of Environment, the economic losses with desertification may reach US$ 800 million per year. The costs of recuperation of the most affected areas reach US$ 2 billion for a period of twenty years, especially in the most affected states, of the Northeastern region and the north of Minas Gerais, in the southeast of Brazil.

Just when Brasil finds itself on the edge of being one of the most powerful members of OPEC and one of the world's largest energy exporters, it starts to turn into a desert! Will the bad luck ever end!

So what does the sixth paragraph talk about? Is there hope? If we know what is causing it, what is the solution. I wish this article was longer, more informative, not so pessimistic.

This is such an important issue that I decided to look for more informations. I found:

"Within an area of about 900,000 square kilometes in Northeastern Brazil, about 10,000 square kilometers ( I repeat: ( 10,000 km2 ) have been identified as desert or of no value, and 223,000 km2 as in danger of desertification, as of 1995.
The existing network of 622 meteorological and hydrological monitoring stations was assessed as adequate, while the three soil and land degradation-data collection stations were judged insuficient. "

This news is from the United Nations
It looks like something does not match. Above we read about 937,000 km2 ( But the U.Nations refer to 10,000 km2 ).
That´s quite a difference. Where are the real figures?

I also found an interesting site ( http://www.thebeckoning.com/en...esert.html )

I could read there:
" 1.1 million square miles of land in North America have undergone severe desertification ( 36,8% of arid lands in North America ) and 10,500 square miles have undergone very severe desertificaion.

Remark: A square mile is larger than a square kilometer, han?

Also read " Desert" by Calfin Kattle.

"It is estimated that the Sonorah and Chihuahuan deserts are approximately l million years old.
When a cow drinks water, it is not drinking from a surplus supply of water. That cow is taking water from something else. There wasn´t even enough water in the West prior to the days of Columbus. Since then millions of people and cattle have been added to the arid West.
A single cow drinks 10-15 gallons of water per day. That´s 10-15 gallons per cow per day, taken away from native plants and animals.
Overgrazing is the leading cause of desertification in the United States in terms of land and area effect. "

QUITE A PROBLEM , ISN´T IT ?

From the United Nations Earth Summit.

"Brazil is elaborating a national plan to combat desertification and establishing a national network on desertification, and is active in fostering technical cooperation with other affected countries.
http://www.un.org/ecosocdev/geinfo/sustdev/desert.htm

The below text can also be found on this site.

" Most endangered dryland regions lie near the world´s five main desert areas.

- The Sonora desert (Northwest Mexico and Southwest USA )

- The Atacama desert ( Thin coastal strip of land along the Pacific Ocean )
Remark: Thousands of miles away from the Brazilian territory.

- The Kalahari desert ( Southern Africa )

- Most of Australia ( HO!!!!! )

- An area running from the Atlantic Ocean to China. ( Sahara d., Arabian d. , Iran d. and the former Socialists Republic desert, Takla-Makan d., in Mongolia, and Gobi desert
in China. ".

Isn´t the above news on Brazil kind of alarmist ? Are the figures reliable ?

Ethanol production is not endangered. Almost 365 sunny days in most areas in Brazil permit the ethanol production.
In reality ethanol production is in full speed and increasing.
More Brazil bashing!

I don't think that is accurate at all. I have lived in Sao Paulo, Floripa and Rio and I can assure you that the figure you provide is inaccurate as they have many overcast days.
Wait a second !

if the world desertification has a loss of US$ 4 billion, it is doubtul that Brazil alone is loosing from cloise to US$ 1 billion, later 800 millions and in the middle of the article the amount is "only" 360 millions
I suppose that if the articlewould have been longer, the estimated amount would have been....reduced again !
Strange and curious statistics !
Furthermore, although there is obviously a big problem with the Northeast, just remind you that the Northeast states were the states with the biggest economic growth of the last few years.
As per Embrapa in Ceara, specialized in goats, new races imported from Africa
(Namibia/Somalia/South Africa) the numbers of goats are increasing again at a fast pace.
New techniques were also made to improve degraded pasture land witrh a fairly good success.

The World Bank, IADB and many International agencies have provided large amount of money for this subject.

Well that doesn't mean s**t. Israel is a desert and jews have turned it into paradise. When was all I saw was green lush vegetation. Tel Aviv was like chicago just beautiful. I saw some neighborhoods that looked like Orange County California. These are now one of the world largest producers of food. Thats why the stinking arabs want "palestine" back. But they couldn't do s**t with it when they had it. Brazilians are a bunch of lazy bums. Who live in a country with so much natural resources and yet they are still stuck in the third world. Israel in 1990 became a first world nation, and they only existed as a nation for about 60 yrs. You dum brazilians are to lazy to make brazil a first world nation. Why don't you just call some Jews to lead your country and they will make it into a superpower.
How?
written by Guest, June 14, 2006
Brazilians lazy? Why would you ever think that? Poorly led, maybe! Someday, Brazil will show you.
...
written by Guest, June 14, 2006
Israel turned it into paradise? What is your idea of paradise?
Besides, Israel is an extension of the US and gets $$$ from the American jew cousins continuously . It makes a big difference; In Arabia ( where live that what you call the stinking arabs) there is no lack of money also because of petroleum and because they have the US support. They have a good standard of life. In Dubai (where live what you call the stinking arabs) there is a profusion of money and the standard of life is very high.
So ,what YOU call stinking arabs
depend on several factors to improve their conditions. The first of these factors is not being impeded by stupid ideas from people like you.

The lazy Brazilians are first in several stances of economy and science and sports, and .. they possess a huge territory ( without huge deserts like the US and Australia ) which is roomy for its people and economically rich.

It is not necessary to call jews into Brazil because there are millions of them already in the Brazilian territory.

Ideas and writing style are the author. In your case I´d suggest that you go back to your middle-school homework and don´t lose your time meddling with gronwn-ups. Your grades may upgrade from "D" to " C ". Make your mom happy. Have you taken a shower this day. This site got so stinky after you wrote !!!

If Brazilians were lazy multi companies would not have fabulous profits. Where do you think that money goes to?
Who is working to make the profits possible?

Prejudice-ladden people like you are a disgrace to mankind.

ANOTHER ARTICLE TO MAKE BRAZILIANS LOOK STUPID. WHO IS BEHIND ALL THIS ?
Desert, desertification....
written by Guest, June 15, 2006
and arid land is not the same at all.

As to Israel, YES they are quite successful for a few simple reasons :
- they dont have much land, contrary to Brazil.
- most of their land is arid or semi desert, contrary to Brazil.
- they dont have much water available, contrary to Brazil.
- they are educated and invest heavily in technology, contrary to Brazil.

Therefore comparing Israel and Brazil does not make any sense.
And if you want to do so, yopu should first educate your poors and then invest 20 times as much because your Northeast is 20 times larger than Israel.

Doubtful that Brazil will ever do that in the next millenium.

And as to the comment from the forum member saying :" Someday Brazil will show you" , yes you are right, the question is WHEN !!!!!

Despite the recent world economic boom, you lagged AGAIN in your economic growth, compared to ALL developing nations. Most developing nations grew at twice or more the rate of your growth.
AND YOU ARE PROUD OF YOUR PERFORMANCE, AS YOU WILL PROBABLY RE-ELECT THE SAME GANG OF CORRUPTED POLITICIANS.

Concerning the the multinational companies who have made fabulous profits, please name them !!!!!
In Brazil there is no major foreign oil companies. There is no major foreign mobile phone companies. No major water and electricity companies. No major foreign PC computer maker. No major foreign companies in software.
You are a closed country. Simple.
But you have many foreign car manufacturers. These companies not only produce cars for your own need and also for exports, generating foreign currencies, and jobs by the hundreds of thousands.
Brazil cannot even build a car by itself. There is NOOO Brazilian car manufacturer.

Yourself have a computer and probably a car, I suppose. therefore you should be grateful to the companies you are criticizing.
Same for Agribusiness companies who have invested large amounts of money, and have given you the opportunity to increase sharply your Nbr 1 export industry and provided direct/indirect jobs to millions of your citizens.

And if you wish to produce and export less, and have far less employment, just throw them away of your country.
Show us what you could do without them !
NOTHING...is the answer ! You would just go back to the medieval country that most of your country is already anyway !

Just compare your Industrial and economic development of the last 2 or 3 decades with the Asian developing countries.
They beat you hands on.

Be proud of being Brazilian but not of the performance of you country.
ALL developing nations are filling the gap with the rich nations simply becvause they grow at a much faster rate.

BRAZIL DOES NOT !!!

Very SSSSimple !

Cheers !
Grade D or C !
written by Guest, June 15, 2006
No doubt that a university grade of D or C is better than NO grade at all because one never went even to basic school. And some countries like Brazil more easily provide a better grade than in developed nations, just to give the impression of being well educated.
But a Brazilian A grade is not better than a C or D grade in other countries.
NOOO foreigner go to Brazilian universities but many Brazilian go to the Universities of developed countries, when they can afford it !
Guess why !!!!!!!

Just look at the stats of your country education. you have some articles, a few weeks ago, in this same site.
Poorers S.A. coun tries are doing better than Brazil.

Quite a shame.....for Brazil !

You lag AGAIN against ALL developing countries.

You are loosers. You do OK only when there is an external demand like during the last few years.
But you have no internal growth.

Most of Brazil exports are only basic commodities with not much added value.
A simple example is that you export cotton to China, who then re-export to Brazil some cotton products ! You are so uncompetitive that you restrict import from them...by now !

You prefer to export agriculture to the tune of US$ 40 billions annually.... INSTEAD of feeding FIRST your society.

Is this what your learned in your Universities ?
Nothing to be proud of.

It is not without reason that Brazil is called a BOOM AND BUST ECONOMY.

A native band in Cnanda owned a plot land and grape vines for producing wine grapes. They wanted more, but instead of getting and using more land, they built a winery on what they had. They began to sell not only their grapes to to other wine producers, but also wines that they had produced. Every country has a limited amount of land, and to sell it off, only as raw materials is highly unproductive, and wasteful. There needs to be an equal balance of exporting raw materials and our own manufactured materials. We must use an acre or hectar of land to its fullest potential, rather than always wanting more and more land to dispose of.

Arrogance &Ignorance
written by Brazilin, July 03, 2007
In any magazine article the rule is that one gets to the points of interest and let the reader read between the lines...do not expect much from magazines that churn out dramatic quotes and figures to create a reaction...also there may be some reasonable argument in the comments, but the disgracefully arrogant and ignorant fool who wrote so disparigingly of my country where I was born in 1948 deserves never to tread on such a beautiful environment...and as far as bringing in Jews especially to do any good can only be described as racially insulting to the beautiful brazilians who have a different lifestyle...they may be glad to be without some of the rampant multinationals...samba is good...

Arrogance is married to ignorance in a relationship where one decieves the other...arrogance hides his ignorance but his ignorrance shows his arrogance...a state of low intelligents. In any event the state of the world whether large or small environments be they deserts or coastal arid zones suffer from desertification and it would be recommended to all who have commented on this page to read the UNCCD document easily found through Google (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and Drought)
