The Gol's Boeing fall on September 29 lasted about two minutes and a half. The Brazilian Air Force determined that the left wing's tip of the smaller plane, the Legacy, cut off a piece of the Boeing's right wing making it fall in a spiral into the jungle from a height of 37,000 feet, or about 11,270 meters.
Two minutes and a half. Imagine the sensation of the 154 innocent people locked inside the gigantic steel coffin in free fall. I keep asking myself how many minutes they suffered the foresight of their certain death, before losing conscience due to the depressurization and the lack of oxygen. Horror... Terror... Panic! There are no words to describe this drama. Besides the relatives pain and the helpless compassion face the irreparable, we are now left to ponder the responsibilities. And here comes the "money, money, power, power," a language that the Yankees know well and like when it's in their favor. This time, it is way out against them, and they are trying to cut their losses, attempting to shift the blame. A Boeing 737-800 like the one that was brought down is worth from US$ 66 million to US$ 75 million, depending on the perks and amenities it comes with. As for the lives they don't have a price, but 154 families will have to be compensated anyway. There will be a juridical battle of monumental proportions. The insurance of ExcelAire, the American air-taxi company that owns the Legacy and is the employer of the pilots involved in the accident, doesn't cover human error. How is this possible? Both Anglo-American pilots had their passports seized by the Brazilian Air Force. In reality they are detained for inquiries, which is perfectly fair. By the way, this it the minimum we might expect. And surprising things are occurring here. For those who are younger and still didn't have the time to learn what we who are older mean when we say "North American imperialism", we have here a live and in-color presentation. The sad episode is a commencement address on how the arrogant neighbors to the North see us and how they behave in times of crisis, especially when we are dealing with defending the sacred right of their companies and citizens to do whatever they wish in other people's country and then leave scott free. Amazon Radars The New York Times reporter who was on board the Legacy, and who has as much technical authority as I or you, disqualified the Brazilian air control system in an interview extensively reported the world over. The next day, another story raised doubts over the running condition of the transponder (the plane's receiver-transmitter that sends the sign to the control tower) of the jet manufactured by the Brazilian company Embraer. In the third day the pilots lawyer states that they really tried to contact the tower, but no one there answered. The lawyer is a former minister. The way they see Brazil, a good lawyer has to be a former Justice minister, able to win friends and influence people, as Dr. José Carlos Dias. The ExcelAire's owner, Bob Sherry, declared: "If there is anybody over there (in Brazil) who has political influence or any other way (note the any other way) to bring our folks back, we will be thankful." A word to the wise. Even secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is being summoned to help bail out as soon as possible both from Brazil, this way stymying and jeopardizing the investigations. As a Brazilian Air Force's incensed officer said, "If it were a Brazilian plane hitting a North American commercial plane over there and causing more than a hundred deaths, the pilot would already be behind bars in the Guantanamo base and being treated as a terrorist". My friend Abelardo Gomes de Abreu, an old and dear resident of São Sebastião, went two months ago to represent Brazil in an oar championship in the United States and he had to undress at the airport to be frisked from head to toe. In other words, a Brazilian tourist in the USA is always treated as a suspect. while two Americans hyper-suspect of having caused Brazil's worst air disaster ever have to be treated as tourists in vacation. "Anglo-American imperialism", kids, is that. In the painful September air tragedy, the only one with some chance of success is the Legacy, manufactured in São José dos Campos, in the interior of São Paulo. It is going to sell like crazy. After all, if a little plane like that can bring down a Boeing while only damaging its wing's tip and a small section of its tail, it's because it's very good. David Lerer is a doctor and a former House representative in Brazil.
