Having the proper documentation from banco central, reciepta federal, etc, etc. I can go on for hours, but it certainly wouldn't make interesting reading here.

We visited Rio, Marica', and Cabo in December and January.

CHASE BANK, WACHOVIA, CITI BANK CARDS ALL WORKED EVERY TIME EVERY LOCATION AND ATM.
ALL THREE BANKS INFORMED ME THEY HAVE AUTOMATIC SECURITY SOFTWARE FOR CASH ADVANCES BUT ALL MY ACCOUNTS WERE OPEN FOR OFF SHORE ACTIVITY.

LIKE YOU SAID THE PROBLEM IS WITH THAT BANK.

And no doubt that Bo experiences will be far more acid and interesting than an ATM not giving money because the Credit Card firm was not informed of the trip by the card holders, and thus JUST wanted to protect his clients interests,,,,since many stolen cards are later used....in Brazil or elsewhere !!!!!!!

We also purchased and home in Marica' with no diffculty signed the papers on Junuary 21, Money changed hands the Title and transfer was recorded February 10th. We also had to arrange for a CPF? card. no problems one day. The trick is to deal with good people.. By the way we are Americans and speak very little portuguese. We had wonderfull people working with us, Banco do Brazil, Citi Bank and our Builder in Marica'.

I can notify my bank cards of travel plans via the internet from anywhere in the world in a matter of minutes. All due respect, but your previous article was not well thought through and now you are just making excuses. People responded to your article because you wrote as if you knew what you were talking about but all of us had experiences that showed us you were woefully ignorant. Ignorance is forgivable, of course. So you got lots of advice how not to have this problem again. But it is sad to see your response is to make more excuses. Especially when you claim to be an investigative journalist you ought to be better at digging up proper information and having the facts.

This is not a problem specific to Brazil. I could have written the same aritcle about my duaghter's problems with using her ATM card in Norway. The world is not the simple place it once was. Get over it.

Max is a serious tard. I lived in Brazil for three years and never opened a Brazilian bank account and had very few problems. Most people would have figured out a long time ago that it is their fault for keep all their money in one place. Open multiple accounts please. Please Max stop justifying your inability to find solutions to simple problems. Just except that you are an idiot.

Please ignore others. Like you, I too love ATM machines in Brasil. They simply have their own special attitude. Lets protect all the ATM's from being considered secondary objects of facility. People should be made to understand, that they will not be able to live without the Lovely caring ATM.

Ohhh, damn Joe, had no idea. So do you mean if I change my attitude that the unreal beaureacratic, corrupt brazilian system will be different?

You mean that I will no longer need an accountant and at times a lawyer to liqidate international bankwires of large amounts?? No more "alteraçãos do contrato social" that need to get approved by "junta comericial" before one can liqidate monies? No more paying accountants to prorate partners percentages in banco centrals online system that is in DOS, needless to say, archaeic and complicated would definitely be understatements? No more buying a property and receiving a value on your title that is 20% of what you actually paid so now you will have to buy a "nota quente" to justify with receipta federal the other 80% of monies that left your account??? So pronto! Now not only have you cheated on your taxes, but you've committed fraud as well!! No more battling with banco do brasil as they are requiring you to give them 20 different documents, and blaming it on banco central, yet when you talk to banco central, they say that they don't require the given documents whatsoever, that its a "banco do brasil thing"? No more mid-level beaurocrats calling me on the phone after 6 weeks when they told me the document I'm waiting for will be ready within a week and saying, "bo, nos temos uma probleminha, mas pode resolver, vem para meu escritorio amanha..."??? (make sure to stock up on Bohemia).

9) I will always compare well developed countries with Brasil, and always cry Brasil is hell ! But will always visit here, and be after every possible Brasileira.
10) Fianaly, lets confess, the ATM did not give money because there was no money in the account. Still what, the ATM is in Brasil, and therefore Brasil is Hell !!

Most ATMs is Brazil are not connected to the international system. It is indeed hard to find one that is. In the Tom Jobim airport in Rio, there was only one that allowed me to get money using my US account last year. In the other side of the bay, in Niteroi, it is almost imposible to get an ATM that will work with an international account. It is a pain in the ass. One is always advised to take travelers checks. I also found out that when you try to use your ATM and it does not work, security guards keep an eye on you. It was unconfortable.

What about cash advances from inside a bank? What is the story with those?
