Will Brazil Give Its Grandchildren the Chance for All It Denied Its Children? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Cristovam Buarque
Monday, 23 April 2007 19:19

Brazilian high school classroomLast month the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) marked its 85th birthday. The Republic was only 33 years old and Abolition, 34, when the party was created, conveying the certainty of the Communist utopia and a revolutionary strategy: taking power and nationalizing the means of production to construct an egalitarian society.

Brazil had an active militancy organized around that utopia and that revolution. Thanks to them, the PCdoB, as well as the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) and the groups of the left linked to the Catholic Church were decisive in the political education of entire generations of Brazilians, even those not in agreement with those ideas.

By means of those dreams and that combativeness a generation came to know and position itself in favor of or against Marxism, Liberation Theology, Developmentalism and even, through opposition, the global Capitalism prevailing today.

But the utopia gave way to perplexity and the revolution, to accommodation.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the heroes have become bureaucrats; militancy has transformed itself into affiliation; the trenches have become the public posts; the parties have turned into acronyms; history has became imprisoned by politics. Those today affiliated to parties called leftist have fallen into perplexity and accommodation.

In the commemorations of its 85 heroic years, the PCdoB is no exception: The Workers Party (PT), the Socialist People's Party (PPS), the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) and my own Democratic Labor Party (PDT) have also fallen into perplexity and accommodation.

Our challenge is to shake the youth from their indifference, once again giving them a utopia and a revolution. Extracting them from their disenchantment or, worse, their petty fights, limited to posts and salaries, or, even worse, from their drugs and criminality.

Utopia is no longer Socialism or Communism. Nor is it the simple continuity of economic development, which today is heating the planet and is responsible for the "apartação," the separation in society that despoils nature and concentrates opportunities and income.

In our reality, the maximum utopia is the guarantee of the "same chance" for each Brazilian: the dream that at birth every citizen will receive equal opportunity to develop his or her potential. To utilize his or her effort with the same chance, independently of the income of the family into which he or she is born, the class, the race, and even of his or her physical or mental deficiencies that can be accommodated.

Thanks to their vocation, talent and persistence, some will be more successful. But all will have the same chance. The road for this utopia is education: a revolution in education capable of making, in a short time, the schools of the poor in the favelas the equivalent in quality the schools of the rich in condominiums.

When this happens, the favelas will not be poor and the condominiums will have no need for walls. Brazil will have torn down the wall of its internal inequality and the wall of backwardness in relation in the developed countries.

It will, moreover, be the school that successfully guarantees the same chance for the generation of today and for the future generations to impede the monumental tragedy of global warming. It is education that will permit changes in consumption habits and will offer the technology for the scientific and technological revolution that can reverse the ecological disaster.

The same chance through education. That is the only utopia and it is a good one, achieved democratically without demanding economic or fiscal irresponsibly, authoritarianism, or the breaking of rules. It is possible but difficult, due to the vice of the old utopias, which were abandoned by the accommodation of the militancy but still boast of theories as the way to avoid accommodation. Ancient words masking the passivity.

We have already deceived our children with the promises of Communist equality; we have already thrown them into desperation and accommodation. Perhaps there is still hope of waking our grandchildren to the struggle for an educational revolution that will offer the utopia of the same chance for all.

That's true Forrest. My fiancé just yesterday told me that her geography teacher in high school, who had a masters degree, taught her class that in the United States the schools there show maps of brazil that dont include the Amazon!!

This complete horses**t rumor has gotten way out of hand. On Sunday night a brazilian congressman that is the host of a show "A Excelençia" on JBTV said on several different occassions the same absurdity, that maps of brazil in the U.S. don't contain the Amazon. Any american well knows that this has never even been an issue in the U.S. and to hear such ignorant and dangerous bare-faced lies is disturbing at best. These type of nutcases are flaming an already growing anti-american fire and it's past time that the brazilian public know the truth, and the american public knows whats being said about it.

I'm quite certain that brazilians wouldn't be happy if journalists and others in positions of authority and responsibility in the U.S. were reporting that the brazilian gov't. was developing an atomic bomb to give to Hezbollah in Foz de Iguaçu, as that statement is as absurd as stating that the Amazon isn't included on maps of brazil in the U.S.

I have three nieces and nephews in the U.S. One is in the 7th grade (junior high), the other the 12th grade(high school), the other is in college(university). I spoke with them last night and each and every one of them are going to get the geography books in their schools and scan the world maps contained within and send them to my email.

I've already sent e-mail to several large news outlets, Fox, CNN, NBC and am going to send the same e-mail to every other american tv network and at least one large newspaper in every major american city. The american public needs to know the extent of the ludicrous statements being made about them and their educational system. These irresponsible idiots need to feel the backlash of their ignorance and educated brasilians should be indignant about this as well. I'm quite sure that brasilians wouldn't like to have groups of "anti-brasilians" in the U.S. making up lies about them.

The U.S. gov't. does enough things for people to be angry with it, it doesn't need anyone to fabricate stories.

That the Amazon is in Brazil is about all Americans know about Brazil, and maybe the view from Sugarloaf or Cocorvado, and Boss Nova. That is it. But everyone knows that Brazil is the Amazon river and the Rainforest. They might not be able to identify Brazil on a map, but they know the Amazon is in Brazil. We have seen enough movies to have learned this fact.

And the result is the world 10th most UNEQUAL country !!!!!

Another Great Brazilian Success !
Also mentionned in your national anthem.

And to my knowledge the Amazon is not only in Brazil !

And tomorrow Brazilian children will get what today and past brazilians children got : NOT MUCH !!!!!
Sad reality !
definition of UTOPIA .... !!!!!!
written by ch.c., April 24, 2007
ILLUSION, DREAM, MIRAGE.....as per the dictionary !!!!!

Yesssss....Brazil is an illusion.
And what Lula promised, promises...were illusions..or lies... !

UTOPIA IS NOT REALITY AND NEVER WILL BE !!!!

Therefore continue to live with your utopias. That is all that is guranteed !!!!

Yesssss Brazil is not a miracle society but a mirage only !

And as long as Brazilians will continue to swallow the lies and false promises of their governments and politicians, nothing will ever change.
But afterall the brazilian governments and politicians expect nothing else from you than to continue swallowing how good and great they are, while they pillage your country
for their own benefit and not work for the benefit of the society !

Except corruption and crimes, nothing is really growing in your society !

Forrest, it is pretty obvious, but I dont think it is going to happen so soon.I have mentioned in one of my posts that when an uneducated "Porteiro" in a Condo makes more money than a school teacher, there is something very wrong with the system.

In all fairness to Cristovam, he tacitly agrees that the leftist revolution in this country was and is a complete failure.Remember, even our President has been saying lately that he is no longer a leftist.

As for the anti Americanism in Brazil: Some years ago, I was reading a book (I forget the name of the book) written by a British author. He wrote that in Ex-British African colonial countries, one of the prerequistes for a politician to get elected was at least 5 years of stay in a British jail. Here the politicians bash the Americans and the Military government to get elected.Once they accomplish their goal, to quote Cristovam

I wonder how Cristovam would have governed if he has succeeded in his Presidential bid in 2006

Just to clarify things: Forrest, you probably married a REALLY uneducated brasilian, as this is the typical thing they do: Show no responsability on what they say. Of course that this was never teached at schools in Brasil (At least I've never heard of it). Don't you think the news would cover such thing, as they usually love to badmouth the left (and I agree most of the times)?

Poor, uneducated people in Brasil do this, they don't feel the weight of their words. For them, it's like spreading a gossip about their neighbours. They don't even know what they're talking about, they just go on and on, like it was nothing. and it's pretty much about everything on their lives: Their neighbours, the government, the world outside Brasil, their bosses, their teachers, the neighbours kids, the price of meat, the weather, etc.

and about the politician saing this on television, I doubt very much.

What happened was that some Internet hoax, A la Conspiracy Theory spread out in Brasil, and nobody payed atention and in a week it was forgotten (It stayed on the internet, never saw a single word about this on television or newspapers or magazines, and I read a lot).

Well because of cocaine everyone in the United States knows where Columbia is. There have been a hundred movies with Columbian drug lords, the war on cocaine in Columbia, the Columbian drug smugglers, the Columbian money launderers, the arch criminal is always the evil Columbian ruthless drug dealers; and of course everyone knows that Brazil is next to Columbia (somewhere). I dont know that they know Columbia shares a 1600km border with Brazil, but they know it is close enough to Columbia to know that it is not in Thailand, or Cambodia, or Laos, or that the capital is not Chungmai, or Bangkok. So Americans learn geography by their addictions.

Where do you think I got the story from?? It was on Globo News as well as on their site Monday Morning. The dep**ado is from SP, he is a state dep**ado, his name is Clodovil Hernandes. And here is your proof which shows you are yet another reality denying brazilian!

http://g1.globo.com/Noticias/Politica/0,,MUL25553-5601,00.html

Clodovil Hernandes relembrou chegada a Brasília e mostrou bastidores.
Do G1, em São Paulo entre em contato

O dep**ado Clodovil Hernandes (PTC-SP)

And you see, a Chief Minister actually responds to this absurdity!! Thank goodness she prefaced her statement with "I don't know if they do this BUT if they do...."

So you see, these types of idiots are DANGEROUS! And I can say that I personally have felt the sting and repurcussions as an American living in brazil of idiotic, irresponsible statements such as these by people in positions of authority!

Don't worry, one way or another, the american public is going to be made aware of the unfounded HATE that is being demonstrated in this country by many.

Well, my wife is NOT uneducated! But she is from a small town in the interior of Bahia, actually very close to the border with Minas Gerais. I've been there several times, and her family isn't rich, but they're not ignorant nor uneducated. And after I saw on Globo.com the above on Monday morning I showed her and that's when she told me, for the second time, the first time was actually a couple years ago, about her geography teacher telling her and the other students this nonsense of the amazon not existing on maps in the U.S. and we teach our children in schools this nonsense.

Now, I posted the link and the story above of what this delusional faggot stated on national tv, but I bet you're still doubting it n'eh Maggot?

I told ya that it was a CIA conspiracy. you wouldnt believe it.Probably you had to place a couple of calls to the lads at Langley to confirm that the Americans are temporary custodians of Amazon, which is safely kept at Florida Keys till El Comandante Fidel kicks the bucket.

My parallel invetigations also have revealed that Chavez asked his fellow citizen Carlos, the Jackal, to hack into the websites of all the Atlas printing companies in U.S. of A to remove the Amazon from our Republic.Carlos, while rotting in a French jail, accepted the challenge and in his spare time, got the job done. The result: Amazon has disappeared from the Planet Earth.

Now the mystery is solved. Clodovil, the Dep**ado federal from your state was taken for a sucker ride by Chavez and he has not realized it.Only Dona.Dilma knows the whole story. Not even our MOD, Dr.Pires, who is not privvy to this "Amazon Conspiracy".

That's true. The "amazon" thing is an old hoax. Recently I saw on the internet some pictures altered by photoshop with "maps" from the supposed books saying the same thing. Hahahahahahaha. Never this was taught in school.

There was another hoax recently, this time created by a soft drink company saying that an international company was buying the Amazon. One congressman was stupid enough not to check the facts before mentioning it in one of his speeches (was it Arthut Virgilio?), because the company from the hoax doesn't even exist.

Magnus, your description of people that talk for the sake of talking, never caring about the consequences, was not only funny but also true. He is very liberal with Venezuelan blood. I imagine all the arms that he bought will rust. I would ASSUME if he tried to use them against Brazil, The U.S. would make an example of him that would make the war in Iran look like a picnic.
Perhaps if he would have a better outcome to use them against Guyana.

Do you know that we have about 800,000 Bolivians

I remember hearing an Argentinean complain that in in AR they have the same situation with Peruvians.

On those special occasions when I visit the immigration area of the Federal Police, there are always Bolivians or Peruvians there and it seems they travel as family units of 4-6, and they are all about the same height/size which is cute! (I think they come in one size only)
I have also seen the Dutch or the like there too, which is amusing, very tall, very white, I bet they scare the hell out of the Peruvians! smilies/grin.gif

No.We keep the ladies and the oil. You may have Chavez and Evil Morales. As an additional incentive,we give you Nestor Krichner also, along with their Malvinas

We do not want no damn Malditas or m******r Krichner, nor Evil Morales, but Chavez we will take because Manuel Noriega needs a cell mate! We keep the ladies, buy the oil and Cachaça from you, and we will reduce the import tax on the Cachaça!

We all heard the news that Chavez is replacing his F-16s with, for starters, 24 Sukoi-30 Mk2s. We also know that in an old fashioned dogfight, the Sukoi can beat the American planes now deployed, assuming equally skilled personnel. Which doesn´t mean much, since in today´s world you´re not supposed to have to get into dogfights except in simulated ops. Technology and electronics is supposed to mean that you´ve got him beat before he even knows you are there. Even with Chavez´s Chinese radars.

Chavez says his buildup is to offset the American buildup of Columbia. But his planning is asymetrical, witness the AK47 factory, meaning guerilla war prep, just what he might expect in a conflict with the USA. Unlike Chile´s buildup, which is more sophisticated and technogical.

Interesting that Latin America´s average expenditure on military is the lowest of any major world region, 1.4%, (Brazil´s down from 1.9% ten years ago to 1.6% now), since it´s a low conflict area. Militarily low conflict, but world champs in murder rate per 100,000.

The greatest threat for Chavez is not military but going belly-up financially. But I just can´t envision a scenario in which he invades Brazil.

Clodovil???!!!!???!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's the one that provides your information?????

You really can't understand the brasilian idiossincrasiss, can't you?
For Christ Sake, he plays the comediant role in the congress you are probably the only one in the world that listen what he says!!! He is insane!!

What?? So in the brazilian congress they elect insane people to be the court jesters??? Seems like people do take what he says seriously, now he's in hot water with his comments about women! These people that occupy positions of authority need to choose their words wisely when speaking in public. And when making such outrageous claims, especially in a country where there are vast numbers of ignorant, uneducated people, they need to realize that many believe them! It's called responsibility, which I fully understand is not a big issue for 97% of brazilians, especially brazilian politicians.

Agora, é evidente: agradar a todos é impossível. Se Jesus não agradou, por que eu, um pobre mortal, agradaria a todos?"

"Eu disse isso para defender as mulheres", justificou-se o dep**ado. E foi interceptado por Cida Diogo: "E dizer que todas ficaram ordinárias?", questionou. "Em uma entrevista de televisão, se todos falarem ao mesmo tempo, ninguém se entende", respondeu Clodovil.

"Se a senhora precisa do meu apoio, use-o, tanta gente usa", continuou. "Eu tenho o meu próprio apoio", respondeu a dep**ada.

Prof, it is amazing that you made this comment which exactly coincides with my wife´s.She thinks that we are giving Chavez too much "Colher da Chá".Dont you think it is clownish on the part of the opposition parties in Venezuela to have boycotted the elections and turned the country into one party rule.

We keep the ladies, buy the oil and Cachaça from you, and we will reduce the import tax on the Cachaça!

You are a very difficult person to negotiate trade with.Ok,you can keep Venezuelan ladies, provided you impose zero import duty on Cachaça and pay for the oil. If you agree to 0% tax on Cachaça, we will forget about ethanol and convert the existing plants to increase the production of Cachaça to quench the thirst of all the Americans

Chavez has pledged Venezuelan blood in the event of war between the United States and Iran

Here Chavez will lose his bet again, because there is not going to be any war between U.S. and Iran.Because, we will send olive branch to the Iranian ladies,by introducing our fashinable Nikaba dresses in Persia. They in turn will bring down the ruling Mullahs.Thinking better, we will export 5% of our Cachaça production to Iran and conquer the hearts and minds of the elite Mullahs.
Just to clarify for the "geographically challenged"...

You got it right, my friend. Ignorant brasilians see a funny cacther on the "Horário Politico Gratuito" on television and simply vote for him. Simple like that. Just like the americans elected Arnold "Negopreto" for governador of California and Jesse Jackson God knows where. But arnold is not saying to much s**t these days, he's past that is s**t...

But as a good brasilian optimist, I Would not say 97%, but more to 65%-70%...
