Agrarian reform in Brazil The concentration of lands in the hands of a few Brazilian farmers, an ownership system called latifúndio, has been a major obstacle to social justice in Brazil.  This complex issue is intertwined with primitive farming techniques, the patriarchal formation of the family, and the substitution of communal property for private ownership.

Is probably true. Of course, how one defines "successful" is the big question. Change the "will" to "would" and I agree.

As a theologian, how do you feel about the new Pope?
Homestead and imminent domain.

'the agrarian reform will be successful only with a total elimination of private ownership.'

It doesn't work. It is only private ownership that provides incentive.

Perhaps the government should through imminent domain acquire these lands and in a program of homesteading either deed the property or after a period of time, 10 years, of working the property deed the property to the homesteader. Or provide low interest or interest free loans to those individuals that work the land for a defined period.
" with primitive farming techniques " Quite true sadly.....

when over 60 % of your sugarcane is harvested manually....just like 200 years ago !!!!!!
And this despite mechanical harvesters already exist for several decades.

And look at the majority of your millions of farmers :
they cant afford to buy tractors, mechanical sprayers....seedlers...etc etc etc.
They still do like they did decades and decades ago.
Even with cattles for traction and centuries old plows !

And if you dont trust me....just look by yourselves....the hundreds of free videos available...in TV Globo Rural !!!!!
You will also see how they struggle and remain poor....despite your "apparent boom"....in agriculture.
Fact being you receive more of what is being worth less.......the US$ !
No doubt Brazil will once more publish their agricultural prowess in local currency......when the US$ will recover !
So that you will still believe....in your prowesses !!!!!!!!
Is that not what you have done time and again in the last several decades ?????
(Doing your stats in US$ when it is weak....and in Brazilian currency when it is weak)
What a joke....what a joke !

What a shame....what a shame to humanity........Brazilians are !
"And Brazil Calls This Land Reform?" Noooooooo.......

....this is what Lula calls....HIS REFORMS !

He wants to triple or quintuple your ethanol production....to create more sugarcane cutters !!!!!!!

Viva Lula ! the MST voted for him....and they won !!!!!

....is to invade land developed by others.....not by them !
Less investment and less work are needed.
Cheaper for the government too...to allow the land invasion !!!!
Less money to disburse too !
Ohhh but if land/farm belongs to a foreigner....that is even better, based upon the Brazilians view !

Can someone explain to me the difference between " land invasion and land occupation"? They seem pretty similar to me.
Let me also relate a family situation. My Brasilian wife's brother owns a couple of pieces of land in Rio near Rio das Ostras, nothing grand, probably less than 2 hectares on the side of mountain, he does not even farm it, just small investments with a situi on them. He decided he needed a vacation and wanted to get some more land, so he went trouncing around RJ state with the MST. He spent 2-3 months on the road, and at the end of it, he got some more land. I could not believe it, but then he showed me the land and the documents to prove he now was the owner. He said it was the best vacation he had in a long time, made a lot of nice new friends, drank a lot of beer around the campfires at night, and generally had a great time, all on a shoe string budget. Meanwhile I am slave to a bank to buy my humble 1/2 hectare of land to build on for the next 10 years. Go figure.
This whole article smacks of someone who has spent way too long in academylandia and not had to go earn a living and totally divorced from the realities of hard work and using your brain is what gets you ahead, and not sitting around taking from someone else and squatting on you backside begging for someone to help you. The world owes no one nothing, you have to go earn it, and if the MST thinks that the way to earn there land is through "land invasion and land occupation" then be prepared to face the consequences, and dont whinge if you end up getting some nasty reactions from authority.
I am all for redistrubution, but Government SPONSPORED & Organized and equitable redistribution based upon means testing and other criteria, and not this rabble of Che-ites who think the Simone Bolivar. revolution is ongoing. The challenge of course is too find a competent enough Government in Brasil to do "SPONSORED and ORGANISED land distribution based upon MEANS TESTING" that does not abuse the system through corruption and nepotism. And that sadly, may take a while still.... But get the priorities right, just stealing land (and I have already some experience with this in Brasil, a small piece was taken off me that was bordering a favela) is not the solution. We will end of like "Lord of Flies" otherwise. Work on good governance.
