The piece had mentioned among many other things the number of politicians occupying the House of Senate and its astronomic staff: 81 senators and an incredible army of 10,000 people to cater to the senators' needs.

There are many major Brasilian newspapers and Magazines that have written the "garbage" (as you call it), in Portuguese. Edison is retransmitting what they said. Why pick up an issue with the messenger?
BTW, Edison has a great potential to be a very good b]investigative reporter and Brasil needs such people. I enjoy reading his articles which touch upon many diversified issues. His 12 years of living overseas has obviously broadened his vision as a person and professional.

Thank you for your kind words. I can only report than not only theBrazilian press, but citizens from all social spheres in Brazil are not pleased whatsoever to see Brazil embroiled in so many corruption schemes, and to review it over and over, it is a cause of major concern for Brazilian society.
Without casting any judgement, these are important authority figures we are seeing here are on the forefront of the changes that need to occur in every major nation in order to foster equality.

Go back in time and try to find out what Holy Sarney did so that he could give Brazil's democracy a chance by offering to shorten his term in office.
Why is a Senator from Amapá ? All his life he was a politician from the state of Maranhão. Why did the people(his party) of Maranhão not choose him to be the senator of Maranhão? By the way, what has he done so for for his "HOME" state of Amapá?

Regarding the current crisis on the Brazilian senate that the mainstream media is fueling the fires with all kinds of accusations against the president of that institution – former president Jose Sarney.
We need to put all this mess in the proper perspective. We know that part of what is happening is related to the advanced power grab related to the presidential election in Brazil of 2010.

Here is some basic information to be taken in consideration when comparing the State of Maranhão with the rest of the states in Brazil.
Demographics:
According to the IBGE of 2007, there were 6,199,000 people residing in the state.
Urbanization: 68.1% (2004)
Population growth: 1.5% (1991-2000)
Houses: 1,442,500 (2005)
The last PNAD (National Research for Sample of Domiciles) census revealed the following numbers: 4,060,345 Pardo (Brown) people (65.5%), 1,549,750 White people (25.0%), 539,000 Black people (8.7%), and 49,000 Asian people (0.8%).
The service sector is the largest component of GDP at 54.5%, followed by the industrial sector at 25.4%. Agriculture represents 20.1%, of GDP (2004). Maranhão exports: aluminum 50%, iron 23.7%, and soybean 13.1% (2002).
Share of the total Brazilian economy: 0.9% (2004).
Note: When anyone is considering making a new investment to start a business in Brazil there are many better options to locate that business in many states of Brazil, and many reasons to invest in states such as Sao Paulo, Parana, Minas Gerais and so on, before someone would consider investing in the State of Maranhão despite who’s the governor in charge of that state; including the members of the Family Sarney.

Mr. Sarney's long career in public life started as a Dep**ado Federal (1956- 1966), then governor of the state of Maranhão (1965-1970), then Senador representing the state of Maranhão (1970-1986) and then President of Brazil (1985-1990). After ending his presidential mandate he returned to political life after being elected Senator. Currently, José Sarney is a Senator representing the State of Amapá and he is also the president of the senate.
That means that former president Sarney’ political career has lasted up to this point for over 53 years. And along the way Senator Sarney met a lot of influential people during this long political career.
The reality of life is that most people not only in Brazil find jobs through their personal network of friends, and relatives. It is whom you know that helps you move along on your professional career.
I don’t see anything wrong in former president Sarney help members of his family to secure any type of job in Brazil – mainly when we have had one of the worst job-market since the great depression.
The mainstream media and former president Sarney’s political opposition are playing a political game more than anything else. It is pure dirty politics and hardball to discredit the current president of the Brazilian senate.
This entire crisis is happening because Senator Sarney’s political opposition want to push him out of power and replace him as the president of the senate with one of their pals.
The truth is if former president Sarney were not the current president of the senate, then any of this political witch hunting would be happening today.

I am not sure where Ricardo finds these arguments, you dont see anything wrong, with a guy who works in the Senate signing secrets acts, hiring his family, when most people in Brazil struggle with unemployment, and many other social issues.

Exporting iron and aluminum does not make a place less miserable, if the profit coming from it goes to only a few hands.
in 2001, Fundacao Getulio Vargas published a report, indicating the number of miserable people in Maranhao 68% of the state. Besides, who can trust a guy who created a bunker for intimate encounters in the congress, what the heck.
But heres some useful data released by PNDA - IBGE
only 29% of the homes in the state of Maranhao has phone lines, 23% of young people over 15 years old cannot read or write, 42,9 % work in the agricultural system. Only 5% of the homes has computers. 67% of the state does not have water system, only 13% of the homes have sewage system.

In this aspect, I agree with you. We need to put this novela in proper perspective and it is indeed related to 2010.Many educated and Middle class Brasilians can scream and yell at the "misdeeds" committed by him. The most important fact is that he has the 100% support of the President who in turn enjoys 80% popularity rating (and who has openly declared that one should look at the "biography of a person", before accusing him of "improper behavior"). The "Mainstream Media" you are talking about do not reach this 80% that really counts for the next year´s elections.
I am sure we are going to watch more Dramas in the coming months to keep the reporters busy and us the readers well entertained!!
