Brazil's poultry cooperative AuroraIt eats little and gains weight quickly, it has large breasts and legs, is resistant to diseases, has a strong heart, lungs and skeleton, develops well in a rustic environment and dies only in the moment of slaughtering. On top of it all, when it goes to the pot, it is tasty. This is model of chicken that Brazilian aviculture is working to have in their poultry farms and to then reach the consumers' tables.

I disapprove of chickens. There is a huge population of them living illegally in the US.

Brazil's remarkable agro business platform should be an envy to the rest of the world. Not only has Brazil led in new science and technology for chickens, but also aquaculture and soy. US companies like DOW and ADM can't come to Brazil quick enough to take advantage of the efficences and technological advances in agriculture. Not to mention that Brazil will be energy independent in just a few more years, leading the world in economic renewable energy solutions. Is it not ironic that Ford and GM are near bankruptcy and the Brazilian auto industry, which is running on ethanol and gas is booming. Congratulations Brazil, it seems that you finally have the economic house in order, now will the entire nation benefit, or just the few elite, that is your new challenge.
Remarkable?

A little perspective please: The soy industry is a bust as of late, and only grew to a once massive and internationally prominent level because of two important factors. One, the systematic and uncontrolled destruction of the Amazon forest in Mato Grosso and Para; and two, those large multinationals you mentioned AMD, Cargill and Bundge financed (and continue to finance) this forest assault to the tune of 60%. These foreign companies are not flocking to Brazil to reap the rewards of advanced agro-technology; they are here to take advantage of lax laws, cheap lands, cheap labor and they basically banked, drove and now control this market.

If you look to the south of Brazil at this moment (SC and RGS), there are currently over 200 farming communties officially under a state of emergency because of a three consecutive year drought that has paralyzed production: chickens, milk, corn you name it. Technology has not helped at all, and most scientists link the abnormal changes in climate in the south of Brazil to the rampant destruction of the Amazon forest. 50% of all water vapor that arrives in the south is generated in the north.

The industry in the south is in serious trouble. Many of these towns in a state of emergency don’t even have reservoirs to capture and store waters from the dwindling rainy season – a reservoir is one of the most basic forms of agro-technology and given the dearth of them in these regions, one cannot boast too much about advancements.

I agree that the flex fill car industry in Brazil is doing extremely well, and I hope it continues to do so, but I fear that given soy is now a bust crop, farmers all throughout the north will switch to sugar cane because it is the new cash crop (there is a lemming approach to agriculture in this country, and that’s why in the ports of Parana there are literally thousands of silos filled with unwanted soy). This, without proper land planning and enforcement in the North could quite easily seal the Amazon’s fate, and in response further fuel climatic problems in the south and in other regions.

The country is extremely close to energy efficiency, however this does not affect the abhorrently high and insulting price of fuel in Brazil. One needs to question why it is that Brazilians pay such a high price for fuel if it is indeed a national supply, when other countries around the world, that rely on imports, pay much less.

But let’s leave petrol for a second. Energy is not only oil. With a country so blessed in sun, Brazil’s record on developing and using alternative energies is abysmal. And there is the real future. Small towns in the north East of Brazil still use electric showers. Why, in an area so sun intensive does this happen? It is in this area that Brazil needs to apply more science and research. I hope they do.

So I would reflect a little about some of your statements. Yes, there have been some notable advancements here in Brazil, but I wouldn’t sum them all up as being a part of “efficences and technological advances in agriculture”. I will give credit to where credit is due, but it is not all as rosy as you wrote it.
