President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has managed to keep his distance from the scandals which have marked his administration and is heading for victory in the first round of the presidential election. Whether he deserves this victory is another matter. Even if he does win, the history books will record that his first mandate was marked by constant scandals and corruption and not by any great social or economic breakthrough.
