Romário celebrates his 1000th goal Scour the team sheets of any of the world's top football clubs and you are unlikely to come across many players over the age of 40, then again you are unlikely to come across another player like Romário. On  Sunday evening the 41 year-old struck home a penalty and with it marked  his 1,000th goal - a milestone reached only once before, by his fellow countryman Pelé.

I was not sitting much more than 100 yards away from Romario when he scored the first goal against Holland in the 1994 quarterfinals. I well remember his chopping his steps and twisting his body to time
the cross from Bebeto and then scoring with one touch before the defense could really react. We had to wait until the Brasilians in the crowd started the "Brasil, Brasil" chant to realize that, yes, it really
was a goal.
