It is a shame that, after 23 years of direct elections of the rector and after the election of five rectors (one of them reelected) by the university community, the University of Brasília (UnB) must once again undergo a period with a rector pro tempore appointed by the Minister of Education.

It is a very interesting article, as Dr.Buarque was not only a candidate for Presidential elections in 2006, but also a Senator as well as a member of the faculty in UnB. So he is an authority on issues related to education and the participation of the student body in the administration of the Federal Universities.
Having said that, I have following observations to make:
1) His article does not mention the reasons why Timothy Mullholland was forced out of his post by the students and on the tactics that they used.
2) He also fails to touch upon the several incidents when various universities faced similar problems when the students invaded the Rectors´s offices (and in some cases, destroying the public properties), during the past year.
3) It would be highly interesting to hear the versions of Timothy Mullholland and his Vice-Rector. But I would not expect them to do so,because they certainly would not like to get involved in a controversial issue. Like the other Rectors whose "Gabinetes" were invaded, they would rather keep silent.
4) I think that Dr.Buarque should be elected as the Rector of UnB. I am sure he will democratize that institution and run it as a model for other Federal universities.

Don't be an idiot. I suggest the President of UNE nominated as the rector of UnB.
