Brazilian musician Gilberto Gil Singer-composer Gilberto Gil was the Brazilian minister of Culture from January 2003 to July 30, 2008. His iconic status, however, mostly comes from being a Grammy-award winning musician, friend of fellow legendary singer Caetano Veloso and a cohort of Bob Marley in the social consciousness movement of the 1960s and 1970s. The political content of his musical lyrics offended Brazil's military dictatorship, and he was jailed in 1968 and exiled to London in 1969.

Simply stated: Ridiculous Populist choice for Cabinet
written by AUGUSTUS, September 09, 2008
Only in a backward Latin American country, where populism runs supreme, led by a semi-illiterate president who makes absurd, ridiculous statements on a daily basis, could somebody as Gilberto Gil be selected as for a position in the cabinet... Simply ridiculous!

Despite his undeniable artistic abilities, with all due respect, the individual under consideration should hardly have been considered for such a position (let alone nominated)! Just glancing at the ridiculous photograph at the main page (along with the embarrassing presidential statements recently made during public events), should provide sufficient arguments for any cultivated Brazilian to reflect (with overwhelming embarrassment) upon the kind of image Brazil is projecting at the capitals of the civilized Western World...

Fortunately, I am an uncultured and uncouth Brasilian. smilies/grin.gif

It deeply distresses me that you are not in position to share my point of view...

I have absolutely nothing against Gilberto Gil whose musical abilities remain unquestioned! I even recall enjoying some of his early works when I was a mere youngster who enjoyed the beaches (and other former delights) of Rio de Janeiro.

Yet, recognition for artistic inclinations should hardly amount as part of the necessary pre-requisites for a cabinet member of a major nation with the type of "aspirations" demonstrated by Brasilia during the past decade...

Please do not be distressed. I was just sarcastic. What made me LAUGH...LAUGH..LAUGH (I am catching the afflictions of Ch.c) was the following lines in the article:

The political content of his musical lyrics offended Brazil's military dictatorship, and he was jailed in 1968 and exiled to London in 1969.

According to the stories, he was not jailed because of his "musical lyrics that offended the military dictatorship", but for something else!! Nobody "exiled" him to London Town, but he went on his own.

This reminds me of a book that I read a long time ago. It was written by a Brit. He said "The highest qualification for an African politician to be elected is to have spent a few months in a British Jail".

I bet Gilberto gets a fat pension for having endured the "Military dictatorship" as well as for his "selfless" contributions made during his tenure as a Minister. smilies/cheesy.gif smilies/grin.gif

He was exiled because of his eyebrows.
Thank you Gilberto Gil

Yes, it is the first time Brazil is governed by a "semi-illiterate president". Before this, "full(fool)-illiterate presidents governed Brazil strictly according to the necessities of the "civilized Western World". The "high society" in Brazil is generally not proud of their country, not proud of their people, not proud of their culture. They have no self-worth. The most impotant thing for them is to satisfy the rules stablished by the "civilized Western World".
Thank you Gilberto Gil!!!!! Thank you very much!!!!!
