A hero and a legend for Brazilians and the Indians he protected
for decades, Orlando Villas-Bôas
has died. His legacy lives,
however. From a low of 97,000 in 1970 today there are more than
700,000
Brazilian Indians. They represent 0.4 percent of the Brazilian
population and occupy 12 percent of the
national territory.
