Brazilians, the World's Friendliest People. Or Are They? PDF Print E-mail
2005 - July 2005
Written by Alvaro Antunes

Orkut is extremely popular in BrazilIt's widely known that Brazilians are the largest community in Orkut, Google's invitation-only social network. In fact, the number of Brazilian Orkut members is even larger than recorded, as many choose to register as if he or she was from a small country, like the British Virgin Islands, Nauru or so.

But why does this happen? Is this because Brazilians are naturally warmer and friendlier than other people? Do Brazilians really have more friends than anyone else?

Sadly, it seems that this is not the case. Take, for instance, how people join Orkut: in America, invitations to join are even auctioned off on eBay.

In Brazil, someone who tried this as a source of income would probably starve to death, as I know people who have simply posted on a newsgroup or mailing list something like "Whoever wants to join Orkut, just e-mail me." I myself joined Orkut through one such invitation. And I didn't even know the guy!

I believe that some people do that because of some kind of "most toys syndrome," that is, a desire to be able to boast that he or she has a great number of Orkut friends.

On the other hand, other people accept friend requests simply because they are asked (even by strangers). Which takes us to the next point: at least for Brazilians, is an Orkut friend a friend?

Once again, the sad answer seems to be no. For instance, I joined some cat lovers groups. A couple of days later, I was added to the friends list of a cat! And no, this was not a person using a cat as an alter ego, but rather someone's pet! If its owners invited me to their friends list, I would understand. But why should I be friends with only their cat?

Worse yet, I checked the cat's friends, and they were almost all pets too (including many dogs, by the way). There were also many fake celebrities and even completely fictional soap opera characters who are Orkut members and have many friends.

OK, I suppose that this may happen regardless of country, as a kind of joke, but the fact is that, even browsing several communities in English, I never found any pet, fake celebrity or character that wasn't registered by a Brazilian (and a profile written in Portuguese is a clear indication).

On the other hand, even disregarding "unreal" Orkut friends, becoming friends with real people you don't actually know is very easy on Orkut, at least for Brazilians.

I decided to check this for real, randomly adding to my friends list people who I found on the friend finder page, communities I'm not a member of, and so on. A considerable percentage of those accepted me as a friend, even if they had absolutely no idea about who I am or how I found them!

To stir things up, I decided to join, for a while, some communities that might suggest I am someone with strange tastes and views. And this had almost no effect on complete strangers accepting me as a friend.

So what does this mean? That for many, perhaps most, Brazilians, an 'Orkut friend' is not what he or she would call a friend in the real world.

I don't know to what extent this is also true for members from other countries, but it surely helps inflate the number of Brazilian Orkut members.

So, if you take your Orkut friends list seriously, you should think twice before accepting a stranger as a friend, as he or she may not be.

interesting, perhaps the fact that people commonly refer to each other as "amigo" or if the person appears to be a gring o"my friend" in Brazil has something to do with it. Perhaps the term "friend" is taken lightly. In most of North America one would usually not call a person a "friend" unless they really considered that person a friend.

Brazilians have ruined orkut

the number of people who are not from Brazil are leaving orkut at a very fast pace.

one of the biggest problems is the tremendous amount of Brazilians going to international communities, where english is the official language, and posting every where in portuguese, causing people from outside brazil to leave these communities.

brazilians taking over country communities, strangely enough 81% of the posts in the Sweden community are in portuguese, 90% of the posts in the italian community are in portuguese, 95% of the posts in the Argentina community are in portuguese.

brazilians harrasing people of certain nationalities
huge numbers of anti-argentinian communities
anti -american
anti-french
anti-japanese
anti-black
created by brazilians

is easy for a non-brazilians to get a very bad image of brazilians in orkut, they are like roaches there, and many of them aren't very well behaved.
Bashful Brazilians - it\'s a crying sham
written by Guest, July 02, 2005
As a Brazilian myself, I feel sorry that some of my countrymen on Orkut have helped spread the image abroad that we Brazilians are not well-behaved. It’s hard to accept this, but I have to give in and agree that Orkut is packed with“many” impolite Brazilians.

To exemplify what I mean, let me report something that happened to me:

I joined a community named “Eu odeio Porto Alegre” (I hate Porto Alegre) just to find out why some people hate my hometown. The absurdities the community members wrote about Porto Alegre were so many that I was compelled to defend my city by showing them the good side of it. As a result, I was expelled from the community. In order words, I was kicked out of a community only because I was not bashing my hometown. What was irritating was not the fact that some people dislike Porto Alegre, but the way they express their viewpoints and the disrespectful way they address to people who don’t see eye to eye with them. My conclusion: some Brazilians are unprepared to participate in forums without using vulgar language and execrating those who have a different opinion.

Incidentally, Brazilians flood Orkut with “I-hate-this-and-I-hate-that” communities. If Orkut is meant to be a community to help people build friendship networks, why do some pack it with such I-hate-whatever-it-is communities?

And Brazilians are divided in their own country. They’re not only the creators of anti-American, anti-Argentinian and anti-whatever-nation-it-is communities. Culturally, I realize there’s a North-South divide in Brazil. So Brazilians ply Orkut with anti-North and anti-South communities. It’s southerners who support rage against northerners and vice-versa.

One reason why I think Brazilians behave so improperly on Orkut is that they shield-protected by something called computer. No one sees their faces. They’re just names with profiles that not always include pictures. And sometimes, when pictures are included, they’re fake. Writing and speaking are different speech events. Writing in front of a computer makes people behave differently from speaking face to face. Uneducated people bash people and things more easily when no one sees their faces.

I lived in brasil for several years and find the people as charming as anywhere in the world. I don't know if the orkut is an aberration or not, but to really know brasilians is to love them.
It really is an enigma because they have a very high violent crime rate as well.

Brazilians kiss your ass in person but behind your back they show their real feelings.
Just like Chris Rock's explanation about 'old black men' being the most racsist, we shouldn't expect Brazilian consciousness to be much further evolved.
They resent everyone because they feel in their hearts that everyone else is of higher status than they can ever be.

I don't doubt your experience on Orkut, but I don't think that Brazilians have a monopoly on internet vulgarity and disrespect. The anonymity of posting comments, as you pointed out, brings out the worst in people. A slight propensity toward aggressive, vulgar behavior is sure to be magnified when given the opportunity to type anonymously with no threat to consequence. If you scroll down a bit to the "Carla Hassett? You've Heard This Brazilian. We Bet." article, you'll see a shining example of vulgar Americans spewing venemous comments about a Brazilian singer.
That\'s true, but...
written by Guest, July 02, 2005
This is a very good article. Your observations are all correct.
But I'd like to register that brazilians are too diverse to be generalized.
There are brazilian communities dedicated to people who don't agree with this nonsense of adding people who you haven't the slightest clue about. I my self take parte in one. Also, many brazilians, like myself, write in their profiles that they won't add people they don't know... this is not rare to find.

I don't know where you get off claiming that old black men have under evolved consciousness'? You are clearly an underhanded bigot, and on that note, I beleave it is old white men have the least evolved consciousness of all men(If you are Brazilian, then you are not even white). In fact, the old white man could not even make an geunine contribution to the many art and music scenes found in the U.S. over the past one hunderd or so years, yet one can easily find many a' white man ready to bend over backward in an weak attempt to claim such art forms as his very own ( Rock n' Roll is a great example). It is very sad to think that an old white man could exert so much of his shallow mind and weak heart in an effort to conceive a new and more highly evolved form of racist thought, yet seldomly, if ever can come off as anything more than pseudo-intelligent to a more rational and/or precise mind. In America the white man's power has always been his numbers, never his brilliance. As for the rest of the world, you can chalk this up to the old world diseases which your fore fathers carried in thier back pocket, as well as the good old and handy European musket (which by the way can be firmly attibuted the Chinsese, as gun power and as well as explosives are both of Chinese origin ).Further more, whites look like Pink Faced Baboons / Japanese snow monkies (This being said in the typical Brazilian low brow fashion, mind you)...

Re: RE:Two faced loser

re: Chris Rock's comment re under evolved consciousness': Black men remember real rascism and are more prone to be vindictive
However, the rest of your comments are very funny.
You're joking, right?
Re:Re:RE:Two faced loser
written by Guest, July 03, 2005
That's right, Chris rock's comment was referring to old black men having endured enough real racism to dispise it as well as whites more so than anybody. This is not what your comment implyed however, but insted was little more than an insidiously bigoted slur by way of a small minded moron...

Your last comment is completly laughable in itself, you should give it a rest, I was not joking even slightly. You people tend to include others when they can be of some benefit yourselves (example, the Jews), but then shun these same people when they become too overwhelming. "This is the true test of a coward."

Your words: " If you are Brazilian, then you are not even white"
Isn't this a bit harsh?
Just because the authors point out that Brazilians abuse the Orkut service and disgrace their fellow countrymen, doesn't mean you should ignore the questions posed in this thread.
Where does the hate originate?
How is it reflected in mainstream Brazil?
Who perpetuates it?
Who benefits from it?
And more importantly, how can you feel justified in defending it?

Wrong, but

"If you scroll down a bit to the "Carla Hassett? You've Heard This Brazilian. We Bet." article, you'll see a shining example of vulgar Americans spewing venemous comments about a Brazilian singer." No, no, no. I did scroll. The vulgar posts are apparently from one Brazilian. Sorry to disappoint you. Show me one example of an American on that article that said anything vulgar or venemous. But, I agree with your main point: There are rude people all over the internet.

Well, there are posts by one knucklehead calling himself James. But he doesn't say anything bad about the singer, he's offensive for other reasons.

the f**king yanks cant think beyond black/white!!

go to all those racist forums on line, and 90% of the people there are americans

the only idea of dividing their society by colors shows u how racially conscious the filthy f**king pieces of s**t americans are........

btw don't bother in insulting brazilians, because I am not even from Brazil, I am from The European Union, and you're not welcome here bloody yanks

written by Guest, July 03, 2005
Okay, so there you go. No one has a monopoly on being a complete a*****e. There's one from Europe. I happen to be from the US, I am not racist, I dislike Bush, I hate our foreign policy. I don't hate France, I actually like France and speak some French. I'm guessing that maybe that's where you are from (in spite of your use of the phrase "yanks"), becuase you don't want to admit what country you are from. If you said France, you would unleash a load of dumb jokes and criticism. Anyway, I'm sure that if you were to meet me face-to-face, you would not think that I am a "SUB HUMAN f**kING SCUM," and here I am, an American. I really think you have demonstrated well how the distance created by this technology that supposedly makes the world smaller makes it so easy to say stupid and hateful things. If you think that America is the only place that is not "color blind," you are deluding yourself or you are just plain ignorant. On the other hand, I do think that France is much more open minded than many places in the world, which is why there have been well-known African-Americans who left the US to live in France.
Who is wrong??? Re: Also Wrong
written by Guest, July 03, 2005
I doubt the guy is from France...

America may not be the only non-colour blind country in the world (as most human beings do have eyes), but it had taken the concept of race to levels previously unheard of by any human civilization throughtout history, as well as helped to solidify the term Race as a biological fact, untill the concept had been fairly recently debunked by mainstream science as well as mainstream scientists at large (according to genectics, race can no longer play a valid aruguement interms of human diversity, as there is very little genetic difference between two supposed racial groups, as well , virtually all genetic difference between individuals can be found within the so called racial groups, and not between them. Not that this at all matters to me). I am only saying, and this is all.

America had/has a deep seeded race problem which goes/went far beyond simple human appearances, unlike the rest of the world (except for maybe Germany).. Whites have gernerally been little more than self serving aa well as deceptive throughout semi-historical times. ."This is my point;" I don't trust them..

....I understand this maybe far off topic, however, I am only partially agreeing with the angry guy above.

Peace and love....

All brazilians hate americans? no, all americans hate vietnamits? no. There´s no base in say stupidity like that. Isolated facts that happens doesn´t represent the whole thing. In brazilian day life we don´t remember the usa but when you want to know the dollar price. Someone say that brazilians want your money when you arrive in here. But a lot of tourists, not only for usa want sexual tourism when they arrive here. That´s a social problem, and unfortunatly the brazilian government doesn´t look.
We need to stop that s**t of my country is better then your, your conutry is worst then mine, mine have this, have that. Every country has their problems and this is business only for who lives in that country.
So think more when you´ll write about outher people that you even don´t know, or even don´t met. I´ve talked to many americans that have relatives in Brazil and never they were arrogant with me and i never felt they´re bad. They all were nice people.
So. ok ok, shut up hehehe. Said enought.
Jus want to say, don´t take those radical posts saying about brazilians don´t like others people coutries. Brazil is a receptive country and a friendly people.

As well, Canada, Austrailia, New Zealand ect. also contributed to the second world war. Give everybody a break, Americans didn't do that much in the second World war.... Russia did the bulk of the work..

I believe that all people that commented on my article should also check the other ones I wrote and were already published in orkut. The are all on free-access pages (you don't need to be an orkut member to read them) and many deal with issues raised here. ( My scrapbook also have many interesting opinions, but access to it requires orkut membership.)

Whoever thinks this abstraction represents reality is totally insane!

If you want to construe a notion or hypothesis about a people, travel extensively through it and talk to many diferent people. Before this, you don't have ANY credibility whatsoever !

Whoever don't like Brazilians, or speak bad of them, who look at your own people and be ashamed of trying to debase a nation whose culture is based on friendship and respect for diversity. Internet users can never represent the face of Brazil as they are a great minority in the country.

I gave up looking at Orkut friends as friends, but the few I do consider real friends I rank differently. Orkut allows you to rank from "Acquaintance" up to "Best Friends" all your Friends, and I use this feature along with the ability to limit information released on my profile at various levels. But I have made some true friends there. I just don't think Brazilians are that different from anyone else in their attitude toward online friendships. And hey, let's face it, there are idiots and jerks from every country online, you know? And people with weird senses of humor, too. But we just have to screen them and protect ourselves. That's the best way to survive the surfing game. Good luck!

I am a brazilian and I think that brazilians really like foreigners and receive them with big atention and respect. When americans or other foreigners arrive at my city to stay some months in exchange , ,many students from university try to be their friends and to help them in all they need. WE can´t generalizate things because some bunchs of teenagers create communities in orkut and say bad things about all. I heard that there are groups that have the wish to put `fights `between many groups.. Then the same enter in a forum and put one opinion against portugueses for example and then go to brazilian community like they would be portugueses and write against brazilians.. Then do not think that all you read in orkut are real feelings of us ,brazilians, because if we would hate americans we wouldn´t study your language, watch your movies, eat your fast foods here , hear your music.. etc.. The culture of young people in big metropoles of brazil are so american.. they hear more american songs than that in portuguese.. they learn English in private courses , they dream to visit USA ( your country is one of the most visit from brazilians in tourismus)... then .. forvive me because my bad English but believe in me.. this `hate ` is not true... I noticed it only between some intelectuals who thing marxism is already alived and dream with socialism.. a hug

Are we all so immature that we must go on endless rants about a friggin website?! First. OBVIOUSLY ppl are gonna accept ppl they don't know as friends on Orkut so its really unfair to put Brazilians on the spotlight. People do it from everywhere. Think of chat sites and all the other multiuser connectivity facilitators there are online. I really don't understand where all of you come off from generalizing so much from one simple thing. If people want to express their likes or dislikes then let them do so without making prejudgements. Everyone gets mad one point or another or wants to express their dislikes for certain things, nobody is perfect and happy 24/7/365. Its all part of freedom of expression. Its the same in Brazil as it is here in the US so accept that other countries have freedoms too. It might be hard for some people to internalize this but there are good/bad/smart/stupid/friendly/egotistic people all over the world of every color and creed. DEAL WITH IT AND DON"T BITCH AND MOAN ABOUT IT ONLINE.. Here you are talking about how bad it is for brazilians to be hating while your doing all the hating yourself too. tsk tsk. very hypocritic indeed.

listen people......we are all beings of the same planet. even though we look different, speak different and have different views.....what is the point of hate. i am american.....i dont like our president and i definatley dont like the u.s government!! i recently decided to go to europe.....i haven't been there yet but,...now i hear about how everyone hates america!!! this is not fair....not all of us are the same. i dont hate anyone from any country or color. this is so sad......there is so much hostility between everyone. will someone please just tell me if i am going to be safe in lisbon, portugal ??? thats all i want to know. i didn't come here to bitch and moan about what country is worse than who. we should be focusing on real human threats like.....global warming! does anyone realize that this is the real threat to all of the human race? and we are all in some little way or another adding to the threat of global warming....but anywho....i just came here to find out if i will be safe in portugal. yes we all disagree with bush....he has got his dick stuck in the sand of someone elses desert he needs to put it back in his pants!!! but why are we hating each other for the faults of our ancestors? seriously people.......give me the truth? is lisbon a safe place for me to travel? will i have fun? will i meet lots of happy friendly people?

That is a great lie. Brazilians don't hate the Americans. I am Jewish and alive in New York since 02 years ago. My grandparents were American, however I been born in Brazil. Who founded New York (or New Amsterdan in the past), they were the Dutch Jews that left Europe and they lived for 50 years in colonial Brazil before they come to build the Big Apple. I love Brazil, I love the United States. We have very more similarities than differentiates. Both are brother nations. God save the America (ALL AMERICAS).
Unrealistic

I know by fact. I have lived in Brazil, countries in Europe and in the U.S. What´s funny is that people in Brazil idealize other countries. Only that. They think Brazil is dangerous, people are not well educated, etc. That´s good, cause they keep on trying to change their country. But, it´s unrealistic. I really enjoyed living in Brazil - that was one of the best things I´ve done so far in my life... I liked it much better than US, where people, also into false beliefs, think is a nice place to live - my opinion.
