Brazil's Inhumanity: Jean Charles Is a Hero, Victims of Brazilian Police Are Nobodies PDF Print E-mail
2005 - August 2005
Written by Alberto Dines
Wednesday, 03 August 2005 10:36

One of the 30 victims of the massacre carried by Rio, Brazil, police on March 31, 2005Jean Charles de Menezes has been buried with all his fellow citizens and politicians' honors and homages. It would behoove now to review the behavior of great part of the Brazilian media in the episode. The victim was innocent, perhaps he didn't have his papers in order, but there is no justification for his murder at the hands of the English police in their hunting for Islamic terrorists.

The funeral in Gonzaga, Minas Gerais, however, was a hero's one, with the Brazilian mistakenly killed being entitled to the Brazilian flag, national anthem, blazing speeches, presence of local authorities and State ministers. Globo network's prime-time Jornal Nacional was prodigal in the time it gave to show the last homages rendered to Jean Charles. Except for the Estado de S. Paulo, the newspapers scattered their emotions for a few days.

Before the 7th day mass it behooves to think over the difference of the funeral of Jean Charles, killed by the police in London, and the funerals of the 30 slaughtered victims from Queimados and Nova Iguaçu, neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro, which occurred on March 31st. All of them were also murdered by policemen - but, in this case, deliberately murdered. It was no accident, everything was planned, although the military policemen have shot aimlessly.

Nobody showed up to offer those murdered by Rio's police a national flag at the time of the funeral. Are by any chance those who die here murdered less Brazilian? Why patriotic honors are reserved just for the innocent compatriots who die overseas?

Invitation to Tears

When a few hundred emigrants from Minas Gerais were recently repatriated, once again there was commotion and they were received as heroes and, however, they had chosen to abandon the motherland. They went away voluntarily and they returned against their wishes.

The Brazilian media is letting itself be carried away by a dangerous chauvinism emotion. Jean Charles' death overseas cannot weigh more than the hundreds who are slaughtered by the police and by the banditry in São Paulo, Rio, Vitória or Recife.

It's understandable that a  government stuck in a tremendous political crisis does everything to divert attention of the population, stimulating tears and solidarities. But the media, apparently so attentive to the subtleties, cannot be partner to this so insensitive and inhuman orchestration.

The difference between the treatment of the different victims is the international attention that the case received.
Brazilian inferiority complex in action.
Its like fame (or in this case 'validity of innocence') by association.

Alberto, I am an American of African descent, and it seems like your editorial is a mirror image of wjat I posted on the B.B.C. website the day of Jean Menezes's death. Police brutality cannot be condemned abroad and ignored at home. The killing of the poor, and the blacks by the police in Brazil with impunity is a Genocide that must be condemned. I have made it my goal in life to inform people of the killing of children by the Brazilian police. I believe that once people become aware of these atrocities, they will stop using their tourist dollars in Brazil.

Anyone who attempts to equivalate the violence of american police against blacks or whatever other ethnic group in the states, and the outright murder that the brazilian PM's perform, as a matter of norm, just doesn't know reality.
Clean your own house...good idea. It would be nice if Brazilians did that instead of worrying about the U.S. and blaming all it's problems on others.
How is that "novela" America by the way?? LOL! Who is hung up on who here?

Raical discrimation in America is not entirly directed at blacks, in fact a typical Brazilian could very well find himself the victem of police discrimination in the U.S.. However, this is not to say that America's vague problem can be compared with what happened Brazil. "How do officers of the law simply decide to shoot their problem dead?"( I am reminded of Al Capone and the Chicago mob scene of the 1920's").

To the angery black guy : The shooting of the Brazilian street childeren was not racially motivated. In fact, I have seen footage of a lighter skinned Brazilian man, being shot dead by a darker Brazalian police officer. My point, These occurrences were not isolated incidents, as well, they certainly were not racially motivated. However, still tragic in essence.

In regard to the London shooting:This was terrible, but not completely without merit. You should not forget that the London rail system had been bombed by terrorists. Police officers where simply on edge and concerned for others safty.(However, I would not be completely surpised if they were looking for vengeance)

The London police made an error which has been recognized. What happened in the outskirts of Rio on March 31, was not an error, not even police brutality, it was Police making a point to protest the change in command in their batallion. Apparently the new commander was going to put a stop to their extorsion and kidnapping rackets.

THE POINT
written by Guest, August 04, 2005
Brazilans if they go abroad illegal or legal, they will soon or later give some benefit to Brazil through money, knowledge and know how.

Who in this web site remember when the Japanese citizen used to travel the world with a photography machine? they returned home with pictures, copy here, modified there and Japan conquered the civilized world with new technology that they copied and modified.

For such reasons, death or alive, I deserve a red carpet and a band when I return to Brazil.

The killing of Jean Charles de Menezes has raised many personal and national passions on this website. As often when giving voice to reader opinions, it seems they have been brainwashed by a commercial myth whereby ever story must display its opposite version. This is absurd, simply because there is no single opposite version to a story, but various of them. The point over Menezes’ killing is not whether British police are more violent than their Brazilian counterparts – there’s no issue here. It is obvious that Brazilian police are much more corrupt and more violent than most police forces in nations not a war. Then again, Brazil’s murder statistics classify it as, indeed, being at war. Call Brazil’s situation, then, a “private war”. On the other hand, the issue in England, which differs from Brazil, has to do with state sanctioned murder. The Brazilian federal state obviously does not overtly call for its police to murder suspects of violent crimes. Menezes just happened to be Brazilian, but he could have, and maybe should have been, in the eyes of the police, Arab, Berber, Persian or Pakistani. Lamentably, that in itself would have legitimized the murder as far as British authorities are concerned. The Brazilian’s death has at least condemned the British government’s resorting to state sanctioned murder as illegimate and grossly excessive, and harmful to its varied Muslim communities. Citizens of the G7 zone should not aspire for their law enforcement to emulate less-trained and more corrupt ones. To the contrary, they have a moral example to uphold, which goes by lawful behavior and the respect of civil liberties. Unfortunately for England, where the population overwhelming rejects Blair’s euphoric glee to be Bush’s bedfellow, it, instead of he, has had to bear the brunt of the illegal invasion of Iraq, the massacre and torture of its population, and destruction of the country’s national heritage and wealth. Many Brazilian readers who voiced their opinion on this website regarding Menezes and the British police have work to do on deciphering the issue. They should focus on the detail of the question, and indeed do everything in their power to clean up their own hugely corrupt police forces.

Let’s clean up our corrupt judicial system along with our police forces. How many lawyers and judges have been accused of corruption or just plain crimes in Brazil in the past 5 years? How serious is a country that does not know what to do with a criminal such as Fernandinho Beira-Mar? They keep him moving from place to place doing tourism in different states' prisons because they can't find a place secure enough to leave him there. They can't trust the police anywhere in the country! Obviouslly Fernandinho has more connections than they thought he had! Menezes' death is very tragic, indeed! But I have a feeling that if he had been killed by the Brazilian police, Brazilians would not feel so enraged! Menezes's death by a foreign police touches our pride! The non-official killing of innocent street children in Brazil should enraged us much more than Menezes's death! Menezes was not targeted because he was Brazilian; Brazilian street children are targeted because the police know that they can get away with murder as long as the victims are poor; not necessarily black, like some African Americans want us to believe!
nice!

Yes, there is racism in America, but we have the Constitution, if you are a racist police you cannot kill with impunity or brutalise with impunity, go read abot the police officer that tortured Abner Louima in New York city, he is in jail for life. Where Brazil differs is that these killings of the poor goes on, and people like you with nothing but air for brains cannot respond with constructive criticism, except to attempt to tarnish the United States. All I am saying is this, If Menezes had been killed by the police in Brazil, there would have been no outrage, life would have moved on. If the killing of Menezes was wrong, then the killings of the poor, and the blacks in the favelas of Brazil by the police is also wrong.

P.S. TO RESPONSE.

As much as I enjoy visiting Brazil to seem my inlaws, etc., I couldn't see myself living there. Seems I'm not alone, the crush off people wanting to emmigrate from Brazil to the US easily overwhlems the couple of dozen or so coming the other way. The violence and lawlessness of the criminals and the police force is one of the major reasons that people want out of Brazil. Think about it, a Brazilian is killed in London by police during an "extraordinary" time, and it's a cause celeb across the world. A Londoner is "accidentally" killed by police in Rio, and it wouldn't make page two. That says volumes about how far apart the two countries are. Maybe in a few decades that might change.

Did you know that right here in Brazil, every month, more Brazilians die from gunshots than in the U.S's war with Afghanistan and Iraq combined!!

But Brazil is such a friendly country, no war, no terrorism. Yeah, right, if there is a country that would like to see Brazil self-destruct, that don't have to do ANYTHING to achieve their goal....Brazilians do a wonderful job themselves!!

Tourists avoinding Brazil doesn´t help
written by Guest, August 05, 2005
Killing homeless children to vanish them from the tourist sight is a quite simple point of view of the whole problem. Unfortunately, it is going to continue regardless of tourist coming here or not. It has more to do with brazillian internal social problems.
Tourism hires million world wide and it is not different here in Brazil. If tourists stoped to visit the country, the social problems would increase. The social problem is almost the root of all this violence and the brazilian citizen should not be the only responsible for healing this. Brazil is just a mirror of what have been happening in the entire world...

Most of us go to USA (I don´t like to call it 'America' because we all are americans! From north, south, central and Caribe smilies/wink.gif ) just to have an opportunity to *survive* with dignity. Like the irish people did in XIX century.
They didn´t want to abandon their families, but they had to do it rather than starve in a hopeless economic system. Despite all bad news you hear from Brazil, this is quite good country and nobody would give up to live hear for nothing.

World over-population led to these evils
written by Guest, August 06, 2005
If there is one root cause of widespread violence, it is our unwillingness to control our numbers, knowing that population is out of balance with the resources available to feed people and meet all of our other demands. It is hard to put the "breeding genie" back in the bottle. Individual birth control precautions could bring about a safe and abundant world.

As a businessman who invested over a million dollars in that sorry ass country, had to daily pay the police, the customs inspectors, the brokers, the government officials and anybody else who opened their hand, there isn't a more corrupt, dishonest or useless "people" in the world. There is a reason N. America doesn't want you; you won't do s**t at home, how can we expect you to work with us? From infancy to death, from the private sector to the goverment (El f**king presidente LULU ring a bell) it is an education in progress on how to be dishonest and kill. From the "lie" museums in Petropolis (museums that teach people that the telephone and airplane are original Brazilian inventions stolen by the Americans) to the open practice of global terrorism in the tri-border regions, nothing and nobody is lower on the food chain than the Brazilians.Highest baby mortality rate in the world, no health care and a penchant for crying the blues when your real tumbles. Hands out year after year to the IMF, and you still kill children. Brazil, a great place to get laid, and then go home. To all the Brazilians reading this, f**k YOU!

Sure you want an answer??? OK...here it goes:

1) Due process rights denied by American Torturers to detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Even though against the Geneva Convention regarding POWs, the American solution is to redefine the term as Enemy Combatants (instead of POW), making it legitimate.

2) Jose Padilla, an American born US citizen, has been deprived of his basic constitutional rights without any due process of law. Being held for 2 years, he was transferred from control of the U.S. Department of Justice to military control in South Carolina. Padilla has not been charged with a crime and does not have access to a lawyer in his detention. This is a clear violation of the 5th Amendment and probably a violation of the 6th Amendment as well. It is also a clear violation of the democratic traditions in any civilized society.

3) And don’t forget the American born Japanese immigrants “concentration camps” of WWII in California.

Are you satisfied now… American Rambo? Or shall I say more? You have such a BIG mouth I bet you can eat a banana sideways….hehehe!

Oooh… the answer to your question is: The United States of America.

There IS NO comparison between Brazilians and Americans. Stop the comparison. It does not exist. Brazil is nothing but a screwed up third world country with a bunch of crap heads leading it. The real nice, good Brazilians are quiet in the background...When was the last time you saw any KOREAN BRAZILIANS protesting on the streets or dancing Samba or getting deported back into Brazil? Get a clue. Only the clueless in Brazil have this inferiority complex. IF the U.S. is so bad, how come most Brazilians are still here and stay for years and year until they get deported for illegal immigration? Are there any illegal American citizens invading Brazil like the Mexicans and Brazilians invade here?
Again, there is NO comparison between Brazil in the U.S. Brazil is Brazil, U.S. is U.S. Brazil can't even be compared to Chile, which is a lot more developed and much more U.S. friendly.

I lived in The United states for 29 years. I am from Portugal and I have been to Brazil and I'll tell you the truth, Brazil is much more proming than the US.

The is a greedy selfish, racist society.

If there is one country, the US, is the king of all racist societies.

It is the worst country in the world. It is rich with slum sucking thieves and curruptrd ploiticians and lobyists, O I forget, The Zionist region, those that crufied Jesus Christ..

Who is the US goovernment? JJJJJJs....

Remember one thing the only reason you have the USA is because Portugal had a massive Earth Quake in 1755. Not even England would have those thirteen colonies if there had not been a natural massive earth quake in Lisbon.

You just got lucky as well as the English. Nothing but pure luck.

This is all by chance not effort do not forget who are the true conquerors of the Americas.

Not the Spanish but it was the Portuguese who are the true owners of America. King Henry of Portugal.
Remember one thing and do not forget your history lesson.

It was King Henry of Portugal who financed Amerigo Vespucci to claim North America for the Portuguese.

Brazil is very much Portuguese but an independent body of Portugal with very close ties.
Brazil is made up of Portuguese whites, Portuguese Africans, Native Brazilian Indians, Italians, Germans, Japanese, Lebanese, Arabs, Polish, Russians, French, Dutch, English, Celtics, Spanish and etc..

North America belongs to the Portuguese and the Brazilians.
You had stolen it from Portugal when Portugal was hit by the biggest ever earth quake in European history.

Brazil has around three times as many homicides as the US with 40% less people. Los Angeles or New York are not comparable to Brazil's much more violent cities.
Brazil rocks, no country is perfect!

Right on, there is too much hate going on here. You can spend hours and hours pointing out the negatives of any country. Basically, Brazil has incredible food, music, beaches, people, and women who actually have a bunda that is feminine, astoundingly beautiful and the envy of the whole world. And men from other countries would happily become a Brazilian woman's personal slave if he could only live to serve her bunda, and serve it in all ways! He and i would gladly sign on the dotted line to enter such a contract.
