Why Is TV Star Being Harassed by US? For Being Brazilian? Black? Or Both? PDF Print E-mail
2005 - October 2005
Written by Clara Angelica Porto

Lázaro Ramos, the star of Madame SatãLázaro Ramos, Brazilian black actor and Globo TV star came to the US to record the last chapter of a series for the Sunday evening show Fantástico, with the kind of visa granted foreign journalists. When Lázaro arrived, the immigration officer let his co-worker, a white, and with the same kind of visa, go by and held him for questioning.

After waiting without any explanation, Lázaro's friend got help from Varig, the Brazilian Airline Company, whose executives took charge and managed to have Lázaro released after 40 minutes.

The actor received no apologies or explanations for the reason why he was held. This is the third time Lázaro goes through such an unpleasant experience upon entering US grounds.

One of the times, Lázaro was coming to New York, where his films were being shown and the producers of the event were paying a tribute to him.

Pier 57 Gets Brazilian Touch

Brazilian architect Michel DeFournier became famous for the resorts he created, a total of 16 throughout the world. The last one is Jequitimar, owned by SBT TV mogul Sílvio Santos, on the São Paulo coast. De Fournier is now finally coming to New York.

Partnering with Italian Giuseppe Cipriani, owner of the famous restaurant chain, De Fournier will build a restaurant complex at Pier 57, New York's trendy spot. The estimated cost is US$ 150 million. De Fournier will arrive in the Big Apple in style. It could not be any other way.

Vale Wants Canadian Canico

Brazilian Vale do Rio Doce, the world's biggest iron ore producer is bidding US$ 612 million for Canadian Canico Resource Corp., which is already established in Brazil, as a producer of nickel.

The unsolicited offer is ready and about to be sent to Canico, and the company's financial director Paul Sweeney has said that they will analyze it promptly.

But Canico's executive director Michael Kenyor has told Reuters news agency that he sees the bid as opportunist. He explained that other companies are interested in Canico, without naming any, which led analysts in the field to say this is a good sign of ongoing negotiations.

Canico is presently building a nickel mine in the northern state of Pará, next to Vale's mine in Carajás. It all seems very fitting indeed.

Brazil Finds More Oil

EnCana, another Canadian company, announced recently the discovery of oil at Bacia de Campos, after finalizing production tests. According to Júlio Moreira, general director for EnCana in Brazil, it is estimated that only one well in the area may be able to produce at least 5 thousand barrels a day.

American Kerr McGee, EnCana's partner in the project has estimated the field's reserves between 100 and 200 million barrels, but the first commercial station will not be operating until 2009 or even 2010.

Brazilian Petrobras announced good news around the same time. Light oil was found in the southern region of the state of Espírito Santo, near the Parque das Baleias (Park of the Whales). Although the company has not said much at this point, experts say it looks very promising.

Jobim Remains Alive

New York genius Woody Allen lives in the same building as Ana Jobim, widow of Tom Jobim. Recently he wrote her a thank you letter after the doorman handled him the book "Cancioneiro Jobim" and the CD "Inéditos" Ana sent him.

Allen also thanked Ana for allowing him to use Jobim's songs in his movie. But the most important part of the letter was when Woody Allen said that Jobim had always been a hero to him and how he wanted to pay a tribute to his genius in his film.

And this is not the only story that shows that Tom Jobim is alive through his work. Dutch singer Josee Kooning paid a tribute to Jobim at the reopening of the De Philharmonie Theatre in Haarlem, near Amsterdam.

The repertoire comes from "Jobim Sinfônico," and Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet, who joined the concert with the Metropole Orchestra, did the arrangements.

Another tribute to Jobim happened at the Village Vanguard, in New York. During five nights of full house the Slide Hampton Sextet did the show "Slide plays Jobim."

Brazilian musicians who live in New York were invited to join in the show, singer Maúcha Adnet, drummer Duduka Fonseca and pianist Hélio Alves, all Jobim specialists.

Drops

* Rumor goes that the buying of 40% of Brazilian Banco Pactual by Goldman Sachs is slow because the Americans are waiting for the clearing of a problem with André Esteves, Pactual's biggest name, by Central Bank. He is to be man number one of Pactual-Goldman.

* The Emmy Award winner TV drama series "Lost" hired a Brazilian Hawaii resident. Marjorie Mariano, from São Paulo, a professional surfer. Good timing.

* The third biennale conference of the Association of Studies of the African Diaspora in the World is happening for the first time outside of the U.S. in Rio, in October. The choice was made because of Brazil's importance in the history of the Diaspora and the size of its afro-descendent population.

* Calvin Klein, the Brazilian from New York, bought an apartment in Rio at Arpoador beach, and now is building a store at the Fashion Mall, with a branch at Shopping Leblon.

* Brazilian Minister Celso Amorim and Condoleezza Rice have been spending time on the phone, and meeting in person, planning Bush's visit to Brazil confirmed for November 6. Amorim offered powder milk and fresh water to help victims of hurricane Katrina.

* From Brazilianist Thomas Skidmore, about President Lula: "Lula has probably lost his capacity to lead the country. He will be from now on a decorative piece, a president whom no one sees because he is too busy meeting with foreigners." Sad, but true.

* BNDES finished the financial deal for 4.5 billion reais that will allow President Lula to announce soon the beginning of the railroad Transnordestina, which will link 8 northeast states in Brazil. Finally, some good news...

It is very important to expose the negative bias that Afro-Brazilians face when entering this country. I have many Afro-Brazilian friends and what they tell me is sad, but they don't moan and carry on the way we do here. It is time to let the Afro- Brazilian explore other avenue that will make their life better. I talked to countless AB (Afro-Brazilians) and they would love to come to America to aquire a better life. there are some here, but not enough here. I ask Brazil to LET MY PEOPLE GO. It's only right.

"The actor received no apologies or explanations for the reason why he was held. This is the third time Lázaro goes through such an unpleasant experience upon entering US grounds." Why Is TV Star Being Harassed by US? For Being Brazilian? Black? Or Both? Reasonable questions. Don't get your panties in a bunch just because someone questions whether racism plays a role in this. If you're white, you probably have no clue what people of color have to put up with.

If the same person is held three times by US airport immigration; if such person holds a foreign journalist visa; and if he is black... well, it makes one wonders, doesn't it?
And when we think that when help finally arrived in New Orleans, it was helping whites first and leaving blacks waiting longer...
Well, I don't think Clara is asking an unreasonable, unhelpful question at all. Maybe some people think that as a journalist she should keep things quiet so as not to spread the news? Really? Please awake up. Clara is not the only one who is seeing and registering what is really happening. Watch Real Time with Bill Maher, you will be surprised how bad things really are... Even Republicans are leaving the Bush boat by now. It's gone too far.

Another possible reason that Lázaro Ramos is being held every time he goes to USA is because somehow he is linked to someone that the INS or Interpol is looking for by having the same name (homonymous) or similar physical characteristics. Race could be the issue, I am not denying it, but I have some Afro-Brazilians friend that never told me any problem entering the USA and I have seen “white” Brazilians been escorted to the INS room in Orlando, for example (no, not me).

My wife is a morena (part indian, park black, part white) - and she gets stopped too. Also, we cannot get any of her family visas to come visit us, while rich white brazilians get them easily. The US is biased, only the rich may apply
...
written by Guest, October 12, 2005
True, only the rich and preferably white. I know two brothers with similar amount of money in the bank, around 40k, one white and blond, the other obvioulsy a mulato, those typical Brazilian all-races-in-one-family type of thing. Easy to guess. The white brother got the visa and the dark brother didn't. And it is so hard for Brazilians to have family visiting now that the visa situation is at random.
What happened to Lazaro Ramos happens everyday in the US against black Americans, or African-Americans if you prefer. I'm black, and I'm proud to say I'm black. Like whites say they are white, they don't say European-American. When we accept to say African American, when we say we are people of color, we are accepting prejudice in the language. All people are people of color. White color, black color and so on. We are all colored.

RE: We are all colored.
written by Guest, October 12, 2005
I have never met a person truly black (they are kind of dark brown actually), not even from Africa and I never met a truly white person (not even my poor blond sister who never can spend much time in the sun without serious sunburns).

If I see one real white person I would imagine that he/she is a ghost. Some are lighter than others because of genetic need to protect against the sun, that is all there is.

Indeed, there are actually no human races. It seems that we are going to take this problem beyond the 22nd century before we start forgetting all the crap about “races” and treat everyone with same respect regardless of genetic makeup.
You are all stupid
written by Guest, October 13, 2005
I am a black american/brasilian and my wife is a white brazilian. She gets stopped by immigration as well. Most of her family members can't get visas to the US. It has little to do with race, but that is the excuse most blacks like to use. I have experienced more racism in Brazil than the US. It is so common that you probably don't realize it. How many black reporters do you see in Brazil vs. the US? No one here says "nego ou nega" as a term of affection.

Hey folks, calm down. The fact reported here happened. And a question was asked. It's hard to get visas to come to the US nowadays, this is a fact. The criteria is not very well defined, because we hear of cases that don't make any sense. In this case, it does sound pretty absurd that a journalist in duty should be stopped, I think this shows that the criteria here is again not well defined. And then we hear of passports and visas being given to terrorism related people. Does it make any sense?

written by Guest, October 13, 2005
To call someone "nego" or "nega" in Brazil is like calling someone darling, honey, sweetie. So it is a really good thing, a loving way to refer to someone. This is not racism. If you think about it from a cultural viewpoint you'll see that. As for racism, unfortunately it's all over the globe. In Brazil too, but to say it's worse than in the US, give me a break.
Re black reporters
written by Guest, October 13, 2005
Actually you would see black reporters in Brazil. I have noticed at least three black reporters when I watch Globo network, for example. One works at Fantastico, another is a News Anchor and the other is a street reporter. Besides, there many black Brazilian actors, singers, dancers, athletes, writers, etc

The poster above is right. The term "nego(a)" is very pleasant in Brazil. My wife calls me "meu nego" and I am a white person. So, you should not analyze the term used in Brazil from the point of view of the American culture.

I do not think that we have more racism here than in the USA although we have racists in Brazil, unfortunately. However, racism is everywhere even among blacks in Africa.
...
written by Guest, October 13, 2005
Racism in Brazil is different than in the US. For instance, in Brazil people don't segregate racially the way we do here. Brazilian literature exhibits names of blacks and whites together, without labeling them black or white. You see Machado de Assis (mulato) and Guimaraes Rosa and Jorge Amado, they are known for what they wrote, the race doesn't matter. Same in the music and arts in general. Here is different, we label and segregate even art... In Brazil if you're educated and have money, you mix in with everyone on the same level. In the US black is black, even if successful and living in the suburbs.

I think it's great to have the chance to read all these news about Brazil. It's too bad Mr. Ramos has had to go through such hard times every time he comes to the US. He should write a letter to authorities, maybe they will do something about it. Letters do wonders in the US, believe me.
I've read other material by Clara, and enjoy her writing very much, not only her collection of news but her articles as well. She writes about facts and she does it very well. And the truth is it doesn't make any difference if she is white or black, Brazilian or American. She is a good writer.

Anti-Black Racism Exists Everywhere!
written by Guest, October 16, 2005
So sad but true. I am a black american foreign service agent for the US govt and yes black people are given a harder way to go in every country on the globe. That's just the way it is. Even in a country like Haiti, white supremacist thinking light skinned Haitians treat black Haitians like shyt and make them go thru the back doors.

That's just the way it is and will be as long as white supremacy is the law of the universe. And Brazil is no less "racist" than is the US. I have yet to see an Afro-Brazilian staying at a 5 star hotel. Working as maids and using the service elevator yes but staying as a guest no way! Even black American guests are give strange looks by white guests until they start speaking English.

I will admit that the US is a harsher more aggressive colder culture and the racism may come off as more harsh than the Brazilian variety but by no means was anti-black racism absent in Brazil. Just study Brazil's history of trying to "whiten" the black race and preference for white immigration in the early 20th century and you will get my point.
Race was an Issue!
written by Guest, October 16, 2005
America does not want American born blacks in the country so they sure as hell don't want a foreign born black entering the country. Welcome to America. African Americans put up with this racism everyday and we speak the language yet we are harassed on a daily basis. Immigration officials are very racist and will harass nonwhite persons and racially profile them over a white blonde person entering the country. If you are black be prepared for far more harassment. If you are a blonde European entering the country the welcome mat is put out for you or if you are a wealthy Asian the welcome mat is put out for you because America desperately wants to do business with China and India.

If you are from a Third World country or Africa be prepared for harassment. I am not saying that all whites entering the country are not harassed but a greater proportion of blacks are harassed. It's a shame because America is quick to condemn injustice in other nations and quick to take them to task like Saddam Hussain but America is the most racist country on earth and sadly racism is a factor in Brazilian society too.

Yes racism and race is still an issue.
CLARA SHOULD BE EXPULSED.

The U.S. authorities should be informed about this fifth column living in the United States.

I am not American. I am a Brazilian.

But I am also appalled with the degree of Anti-American bigotry of the person who wrote this article.

If she does not like the US, how about trying to live in Cuba and write an article against the policies of that government?

That is the price Americans pay for opening their country to a cretine such as Clara Angelica Porto

There is not a single sentence in what was written that shows that Clara is anti-American. She just spread the news, something that happened, and when this kind of thing happens three times with one single person, it does make one think.
I don't know if you, who claim to be Brazilian, read the whole column, or even read other articles by this journalist, because if you did you wouldn't be so judgemental and unfair. If you go gack and do a more careful reading, you'll see that there is not one single line that wasn't written with a professional ethical approach.

Why is it so hard for Bazilians to get Visa? Well, I dont believe ir terrorist threat or that some are black. It is because the US is trying to curb the millions of illegals that come to USA and steal US jobs and dont pay taxes!!

US immigration generally checks to see if you own a home, a car, have a job, have US money brazil bank accounts, some sort of tie to Brazil that is almost guaranteed you will go back. Has absolutely nothing to do with race. How many white people you seen working at Atlanta airport?

Are there black people in Brazil? Look like tall mexicans with good tans to me! And the Brazilian women!! Gostoso!!!

The price we pay?
written by Guest, October 18, 2005
To the Brazilian who is more American than you are:

Please go back to school and learn about the US Constitution (if you're a Brazilian in the US). Your suggestion that the US "authorities should be informed" is not consistent with core values in the US, as set forth in our Constitution. I find your comments much more appalling and anti-American than anything that I have read on this page. If you want to live in an authoritarian nation, go to Cuba yourself. You aren't doing the US or Brazil any good with your fascistic ideas.

And the other person above is correct. Nothing in the article is anti-American.
...
written by Guest, October 19, 2005
This person doesn't only need to learn about US Constitution, it needs English language lessons as well. This person is anti anything, because it doesn't really know anything.
I always enjoy Ms. Porto's collection of news and/or articles. And she always fills us in with what's happening in Brazil.

Mr. Ramos had no problem getting a visa to the US as a journalist, because his trip was work related. The problem happened when he got to the airport. According to the author, this was the 3rd time in a row. It is very unpleasant, to say the least, and to think that journalists on the job have to deal with this kind of humiliation is not very flattering to how airport authorities are handling their job these days. And Ramos works for the biggest Tv network in Brazil...

I read that travel agencies in Brazil are losing money beause it's taking the American Consulates 3 to 4 months to set up an interview for visa granting. Meaning if a Brazilian wants to tour the US in April, he has to start the visa process now, not even knowing if he is getting a visa. It sucks. I'm married to a Brazilian and many of his relatives and friends can't even come for a visit, because of visa. And some people who do finally get a visa, might get into the kind of problem that the actor Lazaro Ramos did, being humiliated at airports. I think this is outraging, it's univiting for people to come to the US right now, this is bad for our image, not to mention our economy. I sure hope I will not be treated like that in Brazil...
...

You see, there were these three boats full of Spaniards and Italians that set sail in 1492... never mind.

Yes, there are blacks, whites, native americans, and asians everywhere in the Americas. Even Mexicans come in different colors (gasp!). You're probably used to just seeing Native American-Mexicans so you think they all have brown skin. Oh and of course people with similar skin colors all look alike and are the same race, can't forget that. Really makes you wonder how it is people think that we in the U.S. are ignorant and racist.
