All I Need to Feel at Home in Brazil Is a Face Overhaul PDF Print E-mail
2005 - October 2005
Written by D.E. Finley

MakeupHere in Brazil, I see so many natural looking, attractive, fit people. So, I guess that I shouldn't be surprised to read that there are twice as many plastic surgery operations than five years ago. One of Carnaval's nicknames is "Silicone Carnaval" because so many people get chest and or derrière implants for the occasion, (which has even led to silicone shortages!).

Miss Brazil 2001 supposedly had 23 cosmetic treatments before her 22nd birthday, beating Michael Jackson, Joan Rivers, and Cat Lady.

Driving back from a social event, my fellow, ex-pat friend, Wendy, exclaimed, "Golly! Does everyone get plastic surgery once they move to Brazil? Am I going to be expected to get surgery too, along with doing my weekly manicure, pedicure, facial, and waxings?"

"Well, I haven't anything done (yet). And, it wouldn't surprise me if I'm not alone." (I didn't have the heart to tell Wendy about my plastic surgeon consultation scheduled for later that afternoon).

"Well," Wendy replied, "Out of the thirty some, middle aged women that I met at the art show this morning, I tallied seven tummy tucks, sixteen implants, ten nose jobs, and three face lifts - not to their mention chemical peels, dyed hair, botox, and acrylic nails. And, I'm sure those were just the ladies who were open about their work done or whose bandages were showing."

"Where do these women think they are, LA or Hollywood?" Wendy ranted, disgustedly. "I had a friend who got silicone boobs and got breast cancer, another one got fat and divorced after her liposuction, and another one got old and croaked anyway. I'm not going to let that happen to me!"

To my own surprise, after moving to Brazil, I've considered plastic surgery. First of all, I can never resist a bargain. Plastic surgery here is like a going-out-of-business sale, compared to US prices. Once you have surgery, it's done, except for the bruises, hospital stay, bill, and having to reintroduce yourself to people who knew the "before" you, like an identical twin. Lastly, the medical care in Brazil is superb!

During my consultation with Doctor Faca, he recommended a major overhaul for my face. My non-beauty pageant beak, cheekbones, and chin would require a major fashion overhaul. He included the skin damage from the tanning salon, the scar under my lip from blowing out a flaming marshmallow, and the scar over my left eyebrow that I got from accidentally hitting myself with a hammer. There would also be aging wrinkles to snip, nip, and tuck. He would assess below my neck during another visit.

I started to worry. What if Dr. Faca pulled too much skin back on my face, making me look terminally surprised, and requiring me to dine through a straw? What if he slipped with the scalpel, and snipped off my Cindy Crawford burnt sienna, fuzzy mole that my botanist aunt admires so much?

Would I loose my physical identity that took me all of these years to acquire? Well, I guess if that were to happen I could express my physical uniqueness in other ways. Then, I could always opt for tattoos, body piercings, and perhaps, even be a little less careful with our power tools.

This article was written in a humorous vein and should not be taken seriously.

The fact that this article occupies the top space on brazzil.com is a testament to the rather sad decline in the general quality of articles that so frequently used to grab my attention. Everyone knows Brazilians spend more on plastic surgery that anyone else in the world, everyone knows that Brazilian women are gorgeous.. and..? What on earth have you contributed to this subject other than telling the rest of the world how bloody ugly, clumsy and insecure you are? Please, relegate drivel like this to your Livejournal, hidden away from educated and sneering eyes, where all immature, teenage angst-ridden bilge belongs.

brazilians want to look white
written by Guest, October 20, 2005
this is because in brazil, the tv shows models and heroes, who are all white. so sad for a country which is 70% non-white.

this is the fault of the blanco/white bastards oligarchy in brazil, who want to promote and encourage white domination of the non-white races and promote white supremacy.

This is also typical of the gringo bastard imperialists, who support the blanco/branca (a.k.a - white) oligarchy in brazil. we need to follow robert mugabe's example, and redistribute all haciendas to the non-white black, pardo, indigenous and other non-white population.

otherwise, the white will fight and hold onto their privileges. we need the likes of hugo chavez and daniel ortega to rule brazil, and not traitor lula, who has done nothing for the poor, but simply sucked up to the IMF and the world bank and the imperialist and racist gringos.

The issue of women and Brazil is compared to wanting to be white? Yea right. It is very true that in the large cities, in particular Rio and Sao Paulo, beauty and keeping ones beauty is a female obsession, sweaty gyms, fad diets, and yes, a huge amount of cosmetic surgury. But this is a sad reflection of what Brazilian women deem important, with many more women to men, it is a womens goal from birth to marry well. Discrimiation in the work force, domestic abuse, lack of education, economic opportunity and sexual abuse are all the sad lot of the Brazilan woman who has sadly learned to accept this. The macho syndrome is alive and well in Brazil and women will continue to be second class citizens forever if they continue to focus on such a shallow life.

Women in Rio and Sao Paulo don't get more plastic surgeries than women in New York. This is a modern world big cities phenomenon. The only reason why Brazilians end up getting more plastic surgeries is because it is cheaper in Brazil than in the US.

AMERICANS SUCK

I HATE AMERICANS, THEY ARE TRULY STUPID IGNORANT GARBAGE

THEY COME TO SOUTH AMERICA AND BECOME OBSSESED WITH VANE THING LIKE PEOPLE SEMI NAKED ON THE BEACH, AND BREAST IMPLANTS, AND ASS IMPLANTS, AND THE MEN ACT LIKE f**kING PERVERTS CHASING 16 YEAR OLD GIRLS

AND BLACK AMERICANS COME HERE TO TRY TO BLACKEN EVERY BODY UP, AND WHEN THEY REALIZE THAT THE REAL LATIN AMERICANS ARE FAR FROM BEING THE BROWN SHORT PEOPLE THAT MIGRATE TO YOUR COUNTRY, THEY GET ANGRY HAHAHAHAHA

WHITE AMERICAN WOMEN COME HERE ACTING LIKE THEY ARE IMPRESSED BECAUSE SOME STREET RAT FLIRTS WITH HER, IN REALITY MOST MEN HERE FIND AMERICAN WOMEN AS UGLY AND FAT, THEY JUST FLIRT WITH YOU TO TASTE AMERICAN PUSSY

AND WHITE AMERICAN MEN ARE THE SADDEST EXAMPLES OF THEM ALL, PERVERTS, HORNY UGLY PERVERTS TRYING TO f**k THE FIRST THING THAT COMES ACROSS THEIR WAY, THEY ARE SO PATHETIC THEY END UP f**kING HOOKERS, AND PEOPLE FROM SHANTY TOWNS, AND MARRYING PROSTITUTES AND WITHOUT THEM KNOWING THEY END UP TAKING THEM TO THE US AS THEIR "GORGEOUS" WIVES HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

yeah Americans are bloody trash, I am a teacher here in Colombia, I teach english and Americans are by far the most pathetic group of people I have seen

you should see them drooling over some of the Colombian vixens, Colombian women are no joke, they are extremely beautiful, and American men act like they have never ever seen a thin woman with a well defined body before in their lives.

American women on the other hand come, and start flirting with the biggest losers~ and they end up f**king the brains out of them, and then when the gringa is not around, and even present (if she doesn't speak the language at all), the guy tells his friends about that girl's pussy, and how she sucked his dick and how s**tty american women are in bed etc.

A lot of men in Brazil were like that too, Americans are f**king sad.

-Jealously is a worthless emotion. Don't envy the americans that have the education and money to travel the world. 90% of the worlds women would bend over backwards to marry a gringo.

-to the Colombian, sounds like you've spent one too many nights alone, if you cant get it naturally (and I feel sorry for you) you can always try to buy it.

-To the south american, if your sister's on the street, don't get pissed when she's all over the gringo. Keep your family indoors if your scared of the americans.

written by Guest, October 29, 2005
Maybe the white upper class women of Sao Paulo and Rio spend most of their time in the plastic surgeons office but the black and brown women of Salvador seemed to come by their beauty naturally. I don't know why Brazil puts so much emphasis on blonde beauties like Xuxa and Giselle Bundchen when they have so many beautiful nonwhite women who are mostly au naturel. I guess Latin America is still obsessed with being white and blonde.

I am an American woman and all of the insults made by American men concerning American women also apply to themselves. Like the Aussie poster stated most Americans, especially the men are considered fat arrogant bastards with no manners and education. I agree 110%. The American male thinks that just because he has more income than most this makes him the king of the world among non-American women.

American culture is dry, sexless, boring and American men soulless creatures obsessed with making another buck. They are so glad to get to some third world country where the sex trade workers will ignore their rude, crude boorish personalities for a few American dollars. Then they come home and brag about how much sweeter the women are than Americans. Personally I find Latin American men much more masculine and sexy than Americans who are "arrogant, super super arrogant, heartless, cold and money hungry.

I see we have some narrow minded folks here.I choose to take people one at a time versus lumping them all in together by nationality. Sometimes I wish I came from NO country so I would not be pre-classified. No chance of that, though, until I learn to speak the languages of South America well enough.

There seems to be a lot of envy of the american way of life here. One has to realize that america is a large place encompassing many different regions and sub-cultures. It is nearly impossible to lump all americans into one stereotype.

There is a lot to be proud of in america. The fact that there is an organized government, safety, education and the ability to prosper.

America was built from the ground up by immigrants, like Australia and Brasil.....the only difference is that the US happens to be organized and successful. Don't generalize America and don't mistake their confidence and pride for arrogance........if you had it, you'd be proud as well.

...
written by Guest, November 03, 2005
You know?? I can relate
curiously enough I taught english from 2001 til' 2003 in Colombia; and yes I came across many Americans who lived or vacationed there.......

Sadly enough most of them knew jacks**t about Colombians or Colombian culture, many of them (American males) were there for a week or so, and they were there on a desperate search for sex, they would drool and act like horny teenagers when they saw these young in their early 20's Colombian girls walking by.

Colombian women are generally quit atractive, they are usually a lot thinner than American women, very feminine, very well dressed and they conduct themselves in a very elegant manner, so a lot of American men couldn't seem to be able to get over that.

Colombians not really like Mexican orPuerto Ricans to say something, culturally speaking they are very unique, but most Americans were still looking for a place to buy some burritos, and tacos, etc. which annoyed me beyond limits; because eventhough they were in Colombia they still thought that Colombia was some sort of Mexico and then the stupid questions would come like, how come the people here don't look mexican? how come Colombians don't eat burritos? how come there are white and black Colombians? they are not all puerto rican looking!

That is the reason why I avoided Americans at all costs, I only dated Colombian men, only went out with Colombian people, got only Colombian female friends etc.

As far as men go, I also agree with you, Colombian men just like Brazilian men seemed a lot manlier, they seemed to have a lot more testosterone I guess, while American men were bitching about American women, most Colombian guys were very happy to get to know the gringas, and to interact with them.

I met Americans who had lived in Colombia for several years, were married to Colombians and they still couldn't speak the language though that was not always the case; I also met very well adapted Americans, one of them was a guy who lived in a small city near Medellin, who was married to a Colombian woman, and was living in Colombia with her, he had his smal ice creaml business there, he wasn't exactly rich there, he was pretty much middle class to their standards and as he told me, there was absolutely nothing about the US that made him want to go back to it.

We both agreed that American culture is empty, materialistic, money driven, Americans (most of them) don't know how to interact, they don't know how to party, they don't know how to connect with people, their aim in the lives is to work extra hard to make more cash so they can pay their notes on the lexus (miserable); as opposed to Colombians whose main aim in life is to actually live, for some reason they put so much passion and positive attitude in life that is contagious, is almost impossible to live there and not be exposed to that energy.

During the 2002 christmass I was a bit down because I was alone and all my family back in Michigan, funny enough I had one of the happiest, most cheerful christmass ever, because my neighbors (Colombians) were having a party on the block, and they had closed the area and were having a community bbq, they were dancing, interacting among neighbors, there was at least 80 people there, married couples, their children, their handsome sons' and daughters' drop dead gorgeous girlfriends and sexy boyfriends, friends of the friends of the friends, a big community party basically; I had such a good time, and met so many friendly, warm people that I realized that night that life was not about just money, like many Americans think.

Now I am in Europe (Germany) which is a mixture of American monotony and Colombian happiness, though Germans are cold, boring and not very friendly most of them are also more honest than Americans.

What makes you any different from the rest of the americans? From the way you tell it, you can't be beautiful or happy unless your latin.

Here's the point your missing. Colombia may have a DIFFERENT culture but it doesn't make it any better.... Its a point of view. Last time I checked the people in America were happy and prosperous....except you mother theresa.......

OH......and for the fat americans.......... Funny how America is also the most athletic country in the world.....see you at the olympics.

I control my life.....which is something that the USA has afforded me. I have the right to free speech, education, the ability to think freely and come and go as I please.

Do you know how many people in the world would love that control?

I'm not an angry man, the thing that makes me angry is a simple minded american girl that is facinated with an exotic culture and denounces her own upbringing - - - well done Hanoi Jane. I have nothing bad to say about columbia or anywhere else for that matter but bashing Ameircans for their CULTURE is wrong.

Racial obsession?
written by Guest, November 04, 2005
It's incredible how some people say that Latin American people want to be white. As far as I am concerned, the people who are the most obsessed with race are the Americans themselves. In every discussion in this website, the first ones to start racial discussion are Americans, like the person who said Brazilians want to be white. That's an absurd, the avarage color in Brazil is light brown, this is the mainstream type, some people are black and some people are too white, if the Brazilians really want to be white, then why so many people go to the beach to get some sun? Brazilians celebrities are golden skinned, they're not white.
race/ethnicity/nationality
written by Guest, November 04, 2005
The reason many Americans may seem ignorant of other places and people is because in most cases we are. Our media mostly shows only the poorest of the poor around the world. They incorrectly classify everything in terms of race - the hispanic/brown "race" - as if what language you speak dictates your race. We get bombarded with this ignorace on a daily basis and most people are too busy/uninterested to take the time to educate themselves. In all fairness, the spanish media does the same thing, referring to people in the U.S. as Anglo or Anglo Saxon, as if most Americans were English. It's wierd but I guess everyone does it. Hell, Bin Laden refers to everyone in the west as the "Frankish Crusaders" because I guess we're all French.

The elite of all countries want to keep us all ignorant of each other. It's easier to maintain your own little kingdoms (nation-states) if all the regular people see each other as so different, just because we live on different sides of these imaginary lines. Just my opinion.
They do Too Want to Be White!
written by Guest, November 05, 2005
Most Latin Americans do to want to be white!. I am an American and yes we are obsessed and paranoid (at least some of us) about race and racial mixing. But so is Latin America. Look at their media and tv programs. All of the actors are white and preferably blonde. Almost all of the models from Brazil are white and blonde except for the gorgeous Bahiana Adriana Lima. But she has blue eyes.

Venezuela just chose two beauty queens one to represent in the Miss World and the other for the Miss Universe pageant and some white Venezuelans are complaining that these two mulatas are going to "embarass us" and that they look like two "drag queens." They are both gorgeous young women but obviously not white and blonde.

Xuxa the blonde is Brazil's highest paid entertainer and has absolutely no talent. But she is white and blonde so she is a STAR! A Colombian news reporter now living in New York stated that Colombian women straighten and lighten their hair so they can be seen as pure white.

It seems as if America is not the only racially obsessed country. Latin America has always wanted to appear as an Anglo Saxon Nordic country and if someone from the outside just looked at their tv programs they would think all Latin Americans looked Scandinavian. I have yet to see an Indian, mestizo or mulatto model or actor represent a Latin American country and on the rare occasions a brunette or nonwhite girl wins the beauty contest there is outrage and cries of horror. This sounds as if they want to be white as the driven snow to me or else why would countries with as many mestizoes, mulattoes and brunette Europeans only hire blonde models and actors and represent itself to the world as a white German Aryan country?
Same deal here in the U.S.
written by Guest, November 05, 2005
The New World was conquered by Europeans so your going to find that same kind of social pressure everywhere.

You look at most blonde women here in the U.S and they're actually brunettes that have colored/bleached their hair blonde. Its like the Michael Jackson effect only not as extreme (no plastic surgery necessary).

I think every society in the Americas has an obsession with being white, but we're much more obsessed with the blonde thing than the Latin Americans are.

BTW, Anglo Saxons are not Nordic and Germans aren't Aryan. Hitler was a stupid man.
...
written by Guest, November 06, 2005
the sad part is that the new world has this inferiority complex instilled in us by the Europeans, while Europe pretty much doesn't give a f**k about the new world

Europeans look with arrogance towards the people in the Americans, if you're from Latin America, euros picture you as a poor semi-illiterate indigenous person semi-nude walking down the amazon

if you're from the US, you're a fat ignorant capitalist bastard, who knows nothing about the world, a racist fat person without culture, intelligence or education

and they look at europe as the center of the world, and they look at themselves as the center of the human race.

f**k EUROPEANS
The History is Different
written by Guest, November 06, 2005
The United States was always a predominantly white Anglo-Saxon country. Latin America and the Caribbean, on the other hand, were predominantly black, mulatto, or mestizo with a few exceptions. The whites in Latin America are mostly from Spain and Portugual and Italy where they are swarthy brunettes. Latin AMerica has always wanted to emulate the racial demographics of the US and be a blonde Anglo-Saxon country.

Yes many white American women dye their hair blonde but most of them are of Anglo Saxon or Nordic ancestry unlike white South Americans who bleach their hair and skin to appear more "Anglo". Also most Latin American whites are not pure race. Many are actually mestizo not white but they want to appear white to the rest of the world so they straighten and bleach their hair and skin and only promote the blonde German Scandinavian women as models and actresses.

Brazil and Argentina were in a race to see who could "whiten" up their country the fastest and Argentina won. Brazil tried to "clean" up the African blood from its population by subsidizing large numbers of whites especially Germans to come to Brazil. They didn't really want the Japanese to come there because they weren't white but they were affluent.

The US had no need to whiten up its population because she has always been predominantly white and most of the whites are of pure Anglo or German heritage with some Italians and Greeks. Latin America is mostly mestizo and Mediterranean white but a lot of black and mulatto people who they want to hide from the world..
Not so different
written by Guest, November 07, 2005
Anglo Saxons are about 10% of the U.S. population. Most Anglo Saxons are not blonde. Most Germans are not blonde. The vast majority of whites in the U.S. are Alpines, not Nordics.

Most whites in the Americas are not "pure race." That goes for Anglo America as well as Latin America. Nearly half of all U.S. whites are part Native American = 'meztizo.' Nearly a quarter have some African ancestry = 'mulatto'. Even accounting for some overlap, thats a majority. But if they appear to be white, then they're considered white.

Argentina didn't have to "whiten" up because they killed off the Native population and never imported any African slaves - they used Italian and German immigrant labor instead.

The proportion of mostly this race or that race is different in different countries for sure. Brazil has a larger proportion of Africans/mostly Africans for instance. But I just don't see that underneath the labels the people are all that different, especially in the way they act.

Brazil, Mexico and most of the countries in between desperately try to show the world a white-european-caucasian face in order to represent themselves as something their not. Much like we in the U.S. (and Canada) show a disproportionate number of mostly fake blondes in an equally desperate attempt to fool the world into thinking we're a "pure white Anglo Saxon Aryan Scandinavian Nordic blonde country," which of course we're not. It may be a lie, but thats what Colonialism is all about.

I'm a New Yorker and I see tourists from all over the world here--some are lovely people and others are obnoxious a*****es, but I don't judge an entire nation on those few people. People are individuals and are responsible for their own behavior. It just seems so ignorant to judge ALL Americans based on a FEW Americans that happened to be jerks. There are idiots in every country, not just the U.S.
Beauty and the Beast
written by Guest, November 08, 2005
Interesting how a topic of beauty, albeit superficial, can transform a discussion into hate and stereotypes regarding races and nationalities!

As far as I'm concerned ALL Women are beautiful, especially non-plasticized ones. I would have thought a topic such as this would have focused on that angle. I didn't expect to see this forum to be used to announce personal views on race or nationalities. We can all find commonalities if we try, but why must some be persistent on defining differences?

Now, if the author wants to share her insight with her own experiences with the FACT that Brazilian culture is being drawn toward becoming more obsessed with "altering beauty" (Note: she never said anything about blondes or white, etc) than let her speak her opinion and let's move on away from the tangencies of hating and stereo-typing and why not focus on the ISSUE of the article?
Beauty IS the Beast?

I just posted above the last reply re: women being belittled in these posts. I agree with the poster above--the article could have prompted discussion about lookism, body image, pressure on women (and increasingly men now) to conform to narrowly defined beauty standards (i.e. a caucasian standard of beauty), but it just declined into an intellectually bankrupt hate-fest. Discussing the issue of plastic surgery and how it relates to our self-esteem is a valid topic.

Coincidentally, my friend posted an interesting blurb on her site long ago about Brazil and plastic surgery:

I am a Colombian; when I came here to the US I had a tough time getting used to the manners at first. (They seemed rude (perhaps because everyone works so much and stress...))

Personally, I would rather love everybody if I can. With some practice, everyone loves you back too! (Me not liking someone is more my problem than theirs - even the most obnoxious person is interesting and at worst easily ignored.)

On the US: I like it: people really can and do make money here (The Northeast is a bit uptight though)

On Colombia: I like it, I was born there

Everywhere else: I like it too probably (I have been in Europe and I like it also)

(Aesthetics are easily redefined - just choose to like everything and don't watch too much TV.)

This article was well written due to the nature of feed back the writer received. I also think Brazil has a larger beautiful women population than in America. I'm thinking about moving to Brazil.

I am South American and I agree with the post above. Brazilian women are much prettier.

I think it is because Americans are obese.

I don't think people try to look Caucasian...they just try to be thin - they are much thinner outside the US.
oh, please

It disheartens me that women are still being reduced to a petty "beauty competition" on this message board. The discussion continues to go in circles. I also completely disagree with the comment that people don't try to look Caucasian. Let's look at a few American celebrities--Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce--now that they've attained success, don't you notice a difference in how they look now? Lighter hair and a de-ethnicization of sorts.

I'm a young mixed-race American woman and I can honestly say that growing up in the 80s and 90s in New York, there was not an accepting attitude of half English, half Chinese girls like me. What is different for me now is that a lot of men approach me because they think I'm "exotic", but not long ago, I would have been considered strange-looking because I didn't look like a blonde cheerleader. Maybe beauty standards are changing, but there is still definite pressure to look a certain way.
Your posts make me wonder

I've been to a few countries. Being that I'm male, I look at woman any place I go but I don't stare. Hearing so much talk about the beauty of Brazilian and Colombian women makes me want to know this. Is there a different look or attitude between the women of the two nations? Can anyone describe Colombian and Brazilian women. It's fine if you just know one country.

I am Colombian male in the US. Women in the US look fine (especially compared to males).

I think people in the US work too much (maybe more time needs to be spent just being nice regardless of what one looks like).

Women everywhere do better than the men (I guess because you are made to last forever.) Men should try harder.

...adding on to that, most of you sound very retarted.

the knuckleheads at the beginning of the thread obviously don't even speak portuguese, did u use altavista translator for that?

anyway, brazil has racial problems which it tends to avoid and has avoided throughout history, while america has racial obsessions and a need to classify, even though they haven't gotten over their problems themselves. i guess everythings cool because you grew up in the 70's and now your kids are all jive and listening to hip hop.

what this has to do with plastic surgery? i dunno... michael jackson anyone?

no really, how did this turn into a race argument...

I don't understand why some Americans think they are so priveleged just by being from there, come on nothing is free in America, everything comes with a price, education is not afforded by most, and they have the worst health care system in the whole world!
What that f**k are you so proud of, being the world's biggest lunnies!

I'm a Latin American male born and raised in San Francisco,CA and I can't stand the care-free completely, bs, forced happy go lucky farce that is Brazil. These people think about nothing other than "Carnival!!!" "Carnival". "Life is a dance" "I dance the dance!!! Do you dance the dance, ah you need to Brazil your ass!!!"Yeah carnival 365 days a year, because it's all we know how to do." And how pathetic, that for years, I actually believed that Brazilians were just naturally beautiful. HA!!!Oh, don't think I'm using this artical to justify that claim, research plastic surgery, and you'll find that there are 400,000 insecure Brazilian plastic surgery jobs done PER YEAR. As a Latin male, if there's one thing I can't stand is that stupid uneducated Latin macho bulls**t. And it's only that same bulls**t mentality, that looms over, and personifies an entire nation, by gripping it by the balls, or breasts. Please Brazil, you lead the world in ethanol energy use for automobiles. Use that superior knowledge to lift yourself from the depths of Paris Hiltonian pedestrian soul use.
OH COME ON!
