The Amazon Is Ours to Protect. Brazil Cannot Follow the US Bad Example. PDF Print E-mail
2005 - December 2005
Written by Cristovam Buarque

The Brazilian AmazonIn 1980, the newspaper Jornal de Brasília published an article entitled "The Green Alaska." It warned of the risk that the Amazon Rainforest could be sold as a form of foreign-debt payment, the same way that, in 1867, Russia sold Alaska to the United States. Twenty-five years later, this warning has not come true, but a considerable part of the forest has been destroyed. It is as if we were telling the world that the Amazon Rainforest is ours and we have the right to destroy it.

In 2005, another sort of warning should be issued. In a short time, the financiers can propose two solutions for the payment of the Brazilian foreign debt: the total opening up of the wood trade and a vast worldwide campaign with the slogan "Get to know the Amazon Rainforest before it's gone."

Consumer desire for industrial products made of wood, along with international tourists' desire to witness the marvels of civilization could unite to attract industries and tourists to our Amazon.

We undoubtedly have the right to maintain the Amazon Rainforest as part and partial of our territory. We cannot relinquish that right and our commitment to future generations. Brazilians will not pardon the government leaders who lose sovereignty over the Amazon. But that does not give us the right to destroy the rainforest, as we have done in the past few years.

The Earth is an immense condominium, each country with its sovereignty and responsibilities. Countries cannot use their sovereignty against the interests of the other countries.

The USA has no right to continue destroying with the greedy industry feeding the American people's consumerist orgy. The greenhouse effect originates much more from the rich countries' immense industrial production than from the destruction of the Amazon Rainforest.

The effects of that frenzied production are already reflected in the climate changes. Even so, the USA still refuses to sign the Kyoto Protocol, which attempts to impose a minimum of discipline upon the world industrial process.

We cannot follow their bad example. We must demonstrate that the Amazon Rainforest is ours and because of this we must protect it, not merely as a territory, but as a heritage of Brazil and also of humanity. Taking care not to transform it into a desert.

Unfortunately, this will be difficult. The Amazon forest reserves are on the fast track to disappearing. One idea, held especially by civil leaders, is that the future does not matter and it is thus necessary to exploit what still exists in the region.

Another strategy, a favorite of the military, is that, for its own protection, the Amazon must be occupied as rapidly as possible, even if this should mean the destruction of the forest.

Better to transform tree into wood and money than to keep it as a forest, one group thinks. Better a sovereign desert territory than a forest that suffers foreign influences, believes the other. The two groups are terrified of NGOs and of native peoples, of ecologists and of backwoodsmen.

The Amazon Rainforest is being destroyed by greed, whether that of the Brazilians cutting down the trees or that of the foreigners buying the wood. It is happening, above all, for lack of a national determination to choose a type of development that respects and maintains the heritage of Brazil and of humanity. The sovereignty must not be merely territorial, but also patrimonial. In this case, conservation is a basic condition of sovereignty.

Transforming our Amazon into a desert is as dangerous as surrendering it. The Amazon cannot be a Green Alaska, as was said 25 years ago. Nor can it be a Sahara Alaska, as it is beginning to resemble

But the world is telling you....
written by Guest, December 16, 2005
...the opposite.

STOP OR REDUCE DEFORESTATION.

Forget the demand of wood. If there is not enough supply, prices will go up, and you could make even more money by selling less trees !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And Amazon deforestation is not done by foreing companies but by legal and illegal brazilian loggers ! And you even let the illegal loggers continue to deforest with total impunity, just giving a little fine here and there, to make the world believe you do something against deforestation.

PITTY....this article !
ERRONEOUS HEADLINE !!!!
written by Guest, December 16, 2005

YOU DONT PROTECT THE AMAZON.

YOU DEFOREST IT WILDLY.

AND YOU SIMPLY REDUCE DEFORESTATION
IN VIEW OF THE INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE.

AND YOU WILL RESTART YOUR WILD DEFORESTATION OF THE AMAZON WHEN INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE WILL ABATE.

THIS IS WHAT YOU HAVE DONE AGAIN, AGAIN AND AGAIN !!!!!!
Protection of the Amazon?
written by Guest, December 16, 2005
Are you going to protect the Amazon like you protected Rio Pinheiros, Guanabara Bay and all of the other eco disasters that are Brazil?
Who is writing this absurdity?

Having visited Alaska many times I can assure you that the idiot who wrote this article has never been to that beautiful place...he just has alot of opinion and hot air without the benefit of any facts or first had knowledge...i think he has been reading too much liberal eco-propaganda and then making the foolish mistake of actually believing it....alaska is pristine...beautiful and protected...Brazil would do well to follow the example of the US in preserving such a treasure for future generations...

Out of Control

The saddest thing about Brasil is the ignorance of social, political and economic issues that radically need changing. The general population feel powerless to change anything so they they wait to enjoy theirnext local Carnival, wait for the next World Cup to win, put some music on and start dancing - all to drown out the hopelesness of the situation. Meanwhile, media keeps the nation in a permanent slumber of ignorance with the anesthesia of ´novelas´and banal television. Unfortunately there is neither a public education campaigns nor poliical desire to improve anything there. There are few people with a combination of intellect, altruism, political energy and moral character prepared to confront the greedy, self-interested rich and powerful in Brasil. No-one there is prepared to make the hard decisions that will bring about long-term improvements either environmentally or socially. Such people are in real fear of being assasinated if their rage upsets the wrong person. The destruction of the Amazon is a classical example of lethargy. It is such a vast area and there is no political will to preserve this priceless garden. The government makes no prosecutions, provides no resources for policing, has no idea as to the extent of the destruction, and sadly, has no plan to do anything long-term about it. I have travelled all over Brasil and I know from experience and observation that if you want to destroy a pristine environment then give it to a Brasilian for a while. They have no idea about ecology. If it makes money then exploit it.A few areas in the south have been protected. But the Northeast is a disaster. Beautiful Maceió has totally polluted beaches that are unsafe to swim in because no-one there has the intellect to build a sewer system that works! I had been to Brasil four times before I actaully saw grass in a park.Thank God for the European influence in Curitiba! Greening, generally, is a foreign idea in Brasil. Money and expedience take priority over environmental protection in Brasil and that will never change. Bye-bye Amazon.

"Brazilians will not pardon the government leaders who lose sovereignty over the Amazon"

Like Hell. They are doing anything now, when it is possible to save the "Lung of the World?

Where is the damn UN?
If brazilians don't know how to run the Amazon, then let the World do the adminstration .

And don't start me on Brazilian patriotism. There are no such like that in Brazil.

Anyone that knows Brazilians will already understand that Brazilians are totally incapable of assuming or accepting responsibility for anything. When something goes wrong they simply blame others and make wild accusations to justify their own incompetence. Am I right or am I right?
Get a Life!
written by Guest, December 27, 2005
This is a ridiculous article. First, the USA has no interest in "stealing", or even buying, the Amazon. Second, the Amazon is in Brazil. If it is being destroyed, it is the Brazilians who are doing it. Third, the "greedy consumer" culture of the USA has created a high quality of life that all people should have. Brazilians, as much as anyone are desirous of this life. That is why immigration from Brazil to the USA is so high. It is sad to see how Brazilian politicians blame their failings on the USA to deflect attention from themselves. My advice to this author - Get a life!

I noticed that none of the postings following your article mention the fact that you are a member of Leonel Brizola´s PDT and at this moment you are not in Brasilia you are elsewhere spending taxpayers money you got from voting for the special session of congress. I have no doubt that you believe you both earned it and deserve it.

What have you done for reform of nay kind in the Brazilian government?

Nice job, steal the brazilian taxpayer´s money and write articles that manage to blame the Americans for cutting down the trees in the Amazon.

It seem that blaming foreigners for Brazil´s problems in order to distract brazilians while you are stealing their money and laughing at them is a lesson that Brizola taught very well, although you have not been able to steal as much as Fernando Color or Paulo Maluf but if you could you would

This line is really funny
The USA has no right to continue destroying with the greedy industry feeding the American people's consumerist orgy.

You are a greed industralist in the Brazilin misery industry. Why don´t you tell us where you got the money to buy your real estate and what kind and how many cars you have. Try to deny that your level of consumption and wealth is much greater that the Americans you point the finger at.

Brazola and his deciples are well aware of a famous quote from Hitler "the bigger the lie, the more people will believe it"

This is sad...I have just wasted thirty minutes reading these comments. Why is there so much finger pointing and blaming. Who cares whose fault it is? Why don't you go do something about? I bet if all the people that sat down and wrote the angry messages got off the computer chair and did at least one thing for the good, you could have saved one or more acres of trees. To start anything good EVERYONE must accept the blame and then decide to do something about it.

How ironic that the author of the post "This is sad" rants and raves about something in which they are participating! Telling people to "do something" and get off their "computer chair" when they admit to wasting 30 minutes here.....well now that´s sad. Why bother with such a weak post? Wouldn´t it be better for YOU to do something more constructive instead? Or maybe you prefer barking orders at people and spouting theoretical waffle....it´s much easier to do isn´t it...Thanks "Bono".
AMAZON SOLD!!!

There should be no concerns on Brazil or the USA taking care of the Amazon. It was already sold to China by the Lula govenment. Or did you miss seeing the all wood leaving Belem with burned in Chinese charaters??

Sorry to say that again I have wasted time...but I do get off my chair and do a lot for the environment. I took the blame for many things that have happened in my surroundings and found a way to fix or better some of the problems. Maybe I cannot run out to the Amazon forest and do anything, but I do a lot in the US that helps support many of the ecological fights that go on daily. If you would like to become enlightened to some of the ideas that I and many others have put into play and see that we do not bark orders, please feel free to contact me at...Gypsy29rose76@yahoo.com. I assure you and anyone else who chooses to write, it will not be a waste of time...Your Welcome...the freedom fighter

What a crock of s**t. 99.999% of what is stolen in Brazil is stolen by your morally challenged countryman.

I've lived in Alaska as well as Brazil, and can tell you that the best thing that happened to Alaska was it's purchase by the USA - it was saved from the ecological disasters that that Sovient and their Russian heirs have inflicted.

Brazil has been totally f**ked ecologically compared to the USA, where most states have substantial stands of undisturbed land whereas Brazil has very little. Do you greedy, stupid, igorant f**ks remember the Mata Atlantica?

If God loved Brazil, he'd let the Americans run the Amazon, but he knows you suck, and he's gonna let you destroy your beautiful country till it all looks like the Northeast, and Kyoto and the Gringos, and the Nips and Chinks will be totally irrelevant to your autoscrewing.
