Dumont, a Brazilian Aviation Pioneer the World Forgot PDF Print E-mail
2005 - December 2005

Detail of Follow Your Dreams coverBrazil has a wonderful hero the world needs to know about. His name is Alberto Santos-Dumont. When I read his autobiography, I fell in love with him. His descriptions of flight are magical, his story reads like a fairy tale, he is such an inspirational figure, so creative, dedicated, humble, whimsical, and generous.

If we simply consider Alberto's achievements, we have an amazing story. Alberto made aviation history in so many different ways, he is called the Father of Aviation. He designed and flew both lighter than air ( his balloon and blimps) and heavier than air (his planes) flying machines.

His balloon is the smallest passenger balloon with a basket ever flown. In Paris, with his airship #6, he accomplished the first flight in the modern sense of the word - with a fixed route and time - and won the Deutsch Prize of 100,000 francs in 1901. He gave all the money to his workers and the poor people of Paris.

He accomplished the first airplane flight in Europe in 1906 for which he won the Archdeacon Prize. He was the first to repeatedly and successfully take off and land a plane on wheels. He designed and flew the first ultralight (sports) plane.

His plane was the first to be built by or bought by people everywhere - including even the United States. Yes, that's right - Popular Mechanics published the plans for the Demoiselle in the U.S.A.; and Americans all over the country built it and flew it.

President Theodore Roosevelt invited him to the White House. When Alberto died, thousands of pilots in the air all over the world dipped the wings of their planes in his honor at the precise moment his coffin was lowered into the ground.

I don't know of another aviator who can claim that many firsts in so many different areas of flight. His record is stunning, almost unbelievable. And this is only part of the story.

Why don't more people around the world know about Alberto? I think it's because he refused to take out patents. He gave everything away. He was interested in ideas not patents, in prototypes, not marketing. He wanted ideas to be free for all. He was a truly altruistic inventor; but because his inventions weren't patented, his name is largely forgotten.

Considering his achievements, however, is only part of the picture. Alberto's story is not complete without conveying his spirit - his dreams, patience, dedication, creativity, humility, generosity, and joie de vivre make him an especially inspiring and unique historical figure.

Conveying his spirit to others is absolutely essential to appreciating his story. The problem is how to do this. How can his story and his spirit become better known throughout the world?

I think our hope always lies in our children. Change has to start with the young: the best place to start is with children. That's what we're doing with "Follow Your Dreams: the Story of Alberto Santos-Dumont," a children's book about Alberto that doesn't just simply list his accomplishments but illustrates his spirit, the magic of his descriptions of flight, his hair-raising escapes and joyful successes with a series of painted illustrations based on Alberto's own descriptions - descriptions for which there are no photographs.

"Follow Your Dreams" will fill every child's heart with the magical possibilities of their own dreams and the beauty of the world around them. They will also see his dedication, patience, humility, generosity, and joie de vivre.

Above all, I want to convey Alberto's spirit to children; because it is so delightful and so inspiring. We are working on publishing the book in as many different countries as possible. Once the children of the world know about Alberto, one day the adults will too. Once he is a hero for children, he will eventually be a hero for adults, too.

Published by Prometheus Press, the book is beautifully designed, even the text pages are in vivid colors with ornamental designs. It's like holding the spirit of Brazil in your hands.

The paper is a high quality 150 gr. with a matte finish. The sheer beauty of the book will make your heart sing. It is in a bilingual format (English/Portuguese) so kids can also develop their language skills. The book is available in Brazil and at Amazon.com. (suggested for children 6-12)

Following in Alberto's footsteps, the author is giving 50% of her royalties to charities taking care of children in Brazil. Every copy sold anywhere in the world will help a child in Brazil.

If you have a child in your life for whom you are thinking of buying a book, keep this one in mind. The message is simply to "Follow Your Dreams. You never know where they may lead you and what wonderful things can happen."

May all your dreams come true!

But if I read coprrectly up to the end it says:

Prometheus Press, by Elisabeth Waugaman, Ph.D., Sueli Guedes (translator)

So this is promoting your own book. You then can only say good things on what you wrote yourself.

The story is good but the way your present it is a scam and a shame.

Is there a law against promoting your own work? Do you mean to say that authors don´t go on booksigning tours and do not engage in promoting their writings?

What planet are you from again?
Congrats

Congratulations to you in making the name and achievements of Alberto Santos-Dumont known. He deserves it!
Yes Congrats

Congratulations Elisabeth P. Waugaman! I enjoyed reading your article. Santos-Dumont was a great man, a hero and a true genius. The world maybe forgot about him but not us the Brazilians.

I wish you great success with your book.

Too bad he "was a day late and a dollar short" inmaking the first heavier- than- air powered flight because the Wright Brothers were certainly not as altruistic as Alberto nor were they anywhere near as wealthy. It's also too bad he performed his work in France instead of Brazil. Unfortunately a lot of that still persists today, especailly among Brazilian politicians.
here we go again

well ,,well..................I bet my little arse that the first two comments about this article have come from a couple of self-centred, ignorant, low-life Americans (with exceptions, of course, not all Americans are the same). Lets face it guys, Santos Dumont was the father of aviation, but of course, nations like the United States like to claim what ever they can for themselves. If people could take the time to look at the facts, dates and data there would be no doubt what so ever where the credit is due.

Brazilians did not invent them but you have them. Not a word because none came from your country, in fact not even airplanes as Dumont preferred to build it elesewhere.
His reason was simple : you were not able to build anything, at that time !

But you invented....vote buying ! Hopefully this will stay in your country.
No export ! Pleeeease !
Great pioneer...no doubt !
written by Guest, December 29, 2005

- but he copied first the balloon or the dirigible from Montgolfier brothers, who invented the balloon a century earlier.

His 1906 record was not made with the Demoiselle.

Those interested should go to the site :
www.first-to-fly.com

and you will understand all the pros AND cons on who made the first fly.
It is not as easily granted to one or another of the different names mentionned.

Brazilians being proud of a Brazilian is logical. The same can be said for Americans
but France has also their pioneers.
promoting !!!!!!!
written by Guest, December 29, 2005
I dont think a forum like BrazzilMag is a site to promote her own work. It is a FORUM not a B2B or P2P site.
Otherwise every one will start selling his own products, TO MAKE MONEY !

This is not a place to sell goods and make self promotion !

If you disagree then you agree that the PT party was right buying to promote some of their "ideas" by buying the votes of other politicians.

Fortunalety it was not done on this site.
Profiting?!
written by Guest, December 29, 2005
I understand that the author is going to donate at least 50% of her royalties to charities helping Brazilian children. How much of your income are you currently donating? What constructive help can you offer to Brazil aside from criticising other people who are trying to inform and to do good?
That is what she says....
written by Guest, December 30, 2005
...to sell more books. Marketing is marketing.

As to your question, I just return it to you. At the end you are the Brazilian who should help poverty in Brazil.

Charities must not always come from abroad into a country that has one of the world worst wealth inequality. That is to easy.
And with the corruption, red tape, bribery, bureaucracy, that Brazil is famous for, no doubt that a large part of donations disappear into the pockets of corrupted Brazilians. A sector in which you excel by all international statistics.
This said, as you insist for details about me, I give every year a check of Us$ 1000.-- to Rythm of Hope in Brazil, BrazilMax Friends and HopeConnection. No doubt you never heard of these charities.

And what about yourself ?
Be honest, dont just provide charities names only in Brazil. Poverty is not unique to Brazil.
How much are you giving to charities in AND outside Brazil ?
After all I am not brazilian and the above names mentionned are only the brazilian charities that I help.

Finally it is extremely insulting to humanity that Brazil calls itself the world^s garden, produce and export so much agricultural products, BUT still have hunger and millions of under nourrished citizens.
Self-righteous blame game
written by Guest, December 30, 2005
Get off your high horse.

How much of your charity goes directly to the poor? Have you ever bothered to check on the administrative expenses, fund-raising expenses, and other "overhead" that all charities are subject to?

I never heard about the charities you´ve mentioned. As for me personally, I don´t give to charities. I don´t believe in them. I do provide jobs in Brazil through my business to about 50 locals and I sponsor private school and professional training for some gifted Brazilian kids.

I am not a Brazilian, pal.

I love this country and I wish that it could do better. There is no lack of effort, but there are tremendous obstacles to overcome.

Corruption is ripe in Brazil, so it is in the United States. Unlike the United States, Brazil is not bent on imposing its will on the rest of the world. So, before you start preaching to others, make sure that your own backyeard is not home to the vices and evil you are so bent on exposing in others.
Americans know little about other countr

... but expect the rest of the world to worship their flag.

Like the Roman Empire before them, the United States will only realize what it has done wrong when the barbarians are at the gates and their empire crumbles.

The excessive use of the big stick to solve all international problems has resulted in a very resentful world. Like a lion-tamer who whacks the lions too often or even when elephants kill their trainer when they have been beaten once too often. An ineffective approach!

Dear commentators, "Follow Your Dreams" simply wants to inspire children's dreams, to let people know about a very great man history has forgotten because of his humility and generosity, and to help the children of Brazil. I am donating 50% of my royalties to help the children of Brazil. The history of flight is extremely complicated. There is room in it for Alberto, the Wright brothers, Blériot, and many others. This is simply Alberto's story. If we are to fulfill our dreams,we must reach out and help one another. Hopefully,we all do it differently to the best of our ability in an imperfect world. That's what Alberto did with total humility.
Thank you for your comments and interest. For the New Year, I wish you all the very best and I have but one wish for all of you - May all your dreams come true, Elisabeth P. Waugaman, Ph.D.

you never heard of charities mentionned.
written by Guest, December 30, 2005

- they all have an internet site. They all provide audited numbers with details of their administrations costs.
- if you are against charities, why do you take the defense of the writer of the book ? Some contradictions there ! smile......
- Why asking me how much I give to charities if you dont give yourself.
- Providing jobs to brazilians doesnt mean they are well paid. This is generally what all workers say against their employers ! No ?
- Why do you provide professional training to gifted Brazilians and not to ungifted Brazilians ? What you do has nothing of humanitarian. You just contribute to the already huge wealth inequality existing in the country and against social inclusion or helping the poors one way or another. No doubt you expect others to do it, while you make as much money as you can.
- I am not Brazilian and not American.
- Contrary to your statement that Brazil doesnt want to impose their wishes to the rest of the world, I disagree totally. Brazil is on the forefront and a leader to attack the agriculture subsidies of the USA and the EU. But they find it normal to subsidies ALL their industries. Their arguments are totally contradictory. They want all and reciprocate nothing.
This is the nature of the actual Brazilian government.
- Dont tell me that the corruption in the USA is the same as in Brazil.

- the only thing we have in common, you and me, is that we love the brazilian society. They deserve to have much more.
But the brazilian governments, actual and pasts, have been/are a shame to humanity. That is why I am so acid against them.

Anyway, Happy New Year !
To Elisabeth !
written by Guest, December 30, 2005

- I understand that Humanitarian aid is now a big business. So big that it became an industry like any other industry. Even a full time well paid job in many many cases.
- Humanitarian aid is also one of the best marketing tools, when one wants to sell something for a a personal profit.

That is where I disagree with you, because contrary to what you said, you dont expect children to buy your book but the adults to do so.
If you really wanted to have children buy your book you would have not written in this site, not done for children.

Sorry, but your objective is clearer than ever : making as much money as you can, not necessarily give 50 % of your royalties as it is only a marketing tool. And even if you would do it, it would be anyway tax deductible. So whatever way you would keep 50 %.

Hopefully your dreams dont come true ! they are not pure and blue dreams, just monetary personal dreams.

cheers !
And who are the Barbarians ?
written by Guest, December 30, 2005

The Brazilians ? this is what they are....barbarians in their own society. No doubt they want now to do the same with the rest of the world.

Impunity in lies, corruption and thousand of crimes is in the brazilian constitution for politicians. Nothing will ever happen to them with the laws they voted for themselves not for the brazilian society.

Injustice, corruption to the roots and unpounished crimes could be the title of a book : the Brazilian Constitution !

And the writers are : The Brazilian lawmakers !

But you elected them !

Sorry for you !

What the hell is wrong with making money? Even if you don;t give it too charity And what better place to get the word out on a book about the Brasilian Dumont than on this blog? People outside of Brasil do not know about Dumont, not about his remarkable accomplishment and intellect nor his humble and sincere humanity. A remarkable man at a remarkable time. It is not about who evented what where...but the story of a great man. I am going to buy the book I have already shared his story and seen him home in Brasil with my children.

I wish Brazilians were as passionate about getting their lives (education) and society in order as they are about being first to fly.

Education is a wonderful thing and this book is just that, buying this book and reading it would be much better then watching the mindles stupid soap operas.

Keep political/corruption and these type of views where they belong, at the polling stations and in news papers.

Hero. Hummm. Dumont is a hero but so was Airton Sena.
Differences? Dumont was a scientist so to speak. Sena was a piece of crap living on borrowed time.

The first is a kind of hero although I can’t get why hero but I can live with that.
Sena: Another “hero”. One dies in a bed the other with a piece of iron through his head with his ass full of money.

The REAL HERO IS the poor, the miserable, the kid dying in his mother’s lap, starvation
These are the REAL ones. They fight day in day out the ever-present misery, food, housing, politicians, PRESIDENTS, (who was a miserable before someone pushed the guy up the ladder.).
Yep. Year of the tourism. I wonder when will US$ 17 Billions be used to help them miserable? The answer?

We ALL know, right?

So we have the following in the podium:

First place- Les miserables (French s**t)
Second place- Dumont guy
Last but not third place - Sena The Iron Man.

Fair enough?

How sad is a country that has Sena as a hero, just for lack of real heroes in the last 500 years or so. (Not counting the miserable).
That guy who was a dentist I guess. That could be a hero? Well discussion is open on this one.

I find it odd that there is no mention in the article or subsequent discussion about the excellent book on Santos-Dumont written a few years ago by Paul Hoffman: "Wings of Madness : Alberto Santos-Dumont and the Invention of Flight" Not only is it an exhaustive biography, it is a well-written and fascinating read. Anything you want to know about Santos-Dumont can be found here.

It is also available in Portuguese as "Asas da Loucura" and can easily purchased in Brasil. Or it can be ordered online from any of the major Brasilian booksellers.

You guys from the USA love to say "us, the Americans...", but what you guys don't realize is that all people living in the american CONTINENT are americans and you're in the best of the hypothesis, only NORTH americans.

Well, now about Santos Dumont. I agree with the writer of an earlier post when he says that north americans just take all they can get for themselves (Irak can tell us a lot about that), it's just so true. So it doesn't matter if Jesus Christ came back and tell people that the Wright Brothers history isn't like people say, you guys would prefer just stick with your good loking version of it. After all, you're the world owner anyways...

Who cares anyway, Santos Dumont is the real aviation father smilies/cheesy.gif

Alberto Santos Dumont was a genius and should have been respected and promoted long ago. This is a good article but it does not go into his background or where he originates from so we can get an insight into what it was like at that time.It does not even go into the reasons as to why Alberto went to live in Paris or if this was because he was not appreciated in Brazil?

I am pleased that at long last something positve has come out of his achievements but surely if anyone had a heart why did his living family not reap some rewards for such acts of kindness to humanity because of Alberto as it is clear to see that Alberto believed in humanity, not just about money.

If he contributed so much to the aviation field, and is now remembered in Brazil, could the government not make a statue of Alberto in memory of his many achievements so that everyone in Brazil can feel proud that a man from Brazil is recognized worldwide?

Anyway, i am glad the author is promoting her work towards the children and is donating 50% to charity and the rest to the poor children of Brazil, but why has nothing gone to his family and why were they not interviewed or consulted on this matter as this has not been mentioned in this artice?

All the same the author is right - we must always remember the Children if you want to create a better future.

"You guys from the USA love to say "us, the Americans...", but what you guys don't realize is that all people living in the american CONTINENT are americans and you're in the best of the hypothesis, only NORTH americans. "

Not this crap again! Why do Brasilians get so upset about this nonsense? "American" is what the residents of the U.S. and the rest of the English-speaking world call the residents of the United States of America. I'm not an American, and I couldn't care less about this nomenclature. Canadians live next door to the U.S. in NORTH AMERICA, and they don't get the least bit upset.

And despite hearing this silly argument many times here in Brasil, I have yet to hear one Brasilian call himself (or herself) an American--except when trying to make this silly argument.

Get over it! Or stop calling the language spoken by Brasilians "Portuguese." Do you expect the Portuguese to be upset because you continue to say you speak "Portuguese" instead of "Brasilian?" I realize this is a fatuous point, but it makes about as much sense as the original poster's upsetedness with "American"

Hegemonic countries and the manufacturin
written by Guest, March 20, 2006
History´s always told by the winners, or, in this case, by the hegemonic superpower. When the URSS still existed you grabbed one of those excellent MIR-edited math books and discovered that, say, Euler´s theorem in the URSS was called "Ivanov´s theorem" (obviously I´ve made this one up since I don´t remember any real example anymore).
So now we have a hegemonic superpower that invented just EVERYTHING. That´s not a new development, that´s just human. And it´s also human not to accept data that defies in any way your deep-rooted beliefs. You´re a boy and daddy tells you the Wright Brothers invented the aeroplane - how could he be wrong? You even visited the Wright Flyer at the museum, you SAW IT!
Ans now some dumb monkey-minded banana republic s**t head brazilian cucaracha claims that an absolute nobody like this Dumont guy actually INVENTED the plane! How pretentious these motherf**ker a*****es can get, don´t ya think?

Well fellas here are the bad news: by any measureable standard Dumont beats the Wright Brothers. He invented the aeroplane, at least if the dispute is restricted to him and the Wrights (God knows what may have happened in other countries and also been suffocated by "official" history).

And here are the good ones: you don´t have to worry since there´s not a chance of changing the "official history" in the foreseeable future.

PS: when the URSS was still alive and kickin´, the "father of aviation" there was Aleksandr Fyodorovich Mozhaiski. And I guess they had the means to make half the world firmly believe it.

"Americans" is what we call estadounidenses, like it or not.
While other peoples in the Americas were still squirming under the thumbs of the French, Spanish and Portuguese, 13 former British Colonies came together as the "United States of America" and by so doing got to the name first, and so people are fully justified in using it for natives and citizens of the USA. If you don't like it, you are probably a small-minded bigot.
In Portuguese, we say Americano for a person of the USA, so at least we have the common sense not to quibble about something already established both by usage and by history.
The word "Brazilian" works just fine for us, thank-you very much.

Only three thousand copies of "Follow Your Dreams" were published. Half of them have been sold worldwide. Please visit the website http://www.followyourdreams for more information and free activities for the kids.
