The Church Is Keeping Marx Alive in Brazil and Undermining the Rule of Law PDF Print E-mail
2006 - May 2006
Written by Augusto Zimmermann
Wednesday, 10 May 2006 09:34

Frei Beto, a Brazilian dominican friar who is a Marx apologistOne would not be mistaken to assert that, although Brazil constitutes the largest Catholic country in the world, the Brazilian clergy comprises one of the main ruling groups that have done its uttermost to undermine the rule of law in this country. While some clergymen, to be fair, do favour the rule of law, other prefer to instead promote in its place an understanding of 'class struggle' based on radical Marxist principles of revolutionary socialism.

Why ideology?

Do you have to be an atheist or Communist to be concerned about the poor? Is any ideology required to be upset that the powerful and politically entrenched illegally drain off millions, while the working poor live near destitution?

However the said author wants to paint liberation theology, I find it hard to see this as anything but an attempt at avoiding the issue of poverty by discrediting critics of inequality in brazil. Shall we throw mud? Where was Mr. Zimmerman during the dictatorship?
Vatican II

The Church went from saving souls to social justice ala Marx & Engels after Vatican 2.
A lot happened there and Mel Gibson's father Hutton could explain it well.

I think what the Professor has written here has great merit and it is my hope and prayer that these communists go to hell and leave the people of Brasil alone for they add to the suffering, they add to the problems.
Another point

The Catholic Church, in true Marxist tradition, supported the ban of firearms for the people.
No dictator, whether of the proletariat or otherwise trusts the PEOPLE with firearms.
What a disgrace the Church has become.

I suppose it would be possible to write an article such as this 40 or 50 years ago, but to earnestly make connections between Marxism and a totalitarianism intrinsic to its logic is today frankly embarrasing. Such a position can only be maintained by a gigantic failure of reading. I would begin by recommending you spend a few slow years with Bloch and Lukacs, but then--and do this in such a way as to permit your swimming lessons to continue unabated--read Althusser, Poulantzas, Negri, Laclau, Badiou, Zizek, and Raymon Williams. As always the liberal survives in thought solely on the virtues of all the things he hasn't. How do you have a professorship?

That last line should read: As always the liberal survives in thought solely on the virtues of all the things he hasn't read. And its true.

Of course the Catholic Church is right in its social justice programs whether based on "Liberation Theology" or not. No one else has the nerve to extend themselves to the poor to the extent that the Catholic Church does. A.M.D.G
