Frontpage of Folha de S. Paulo shows damage from Israeli air attack in LebanonAnother Brazilian Air Force jet reaches the homeland carrying wearied vacationers turned war refugees. They are some of the 2,000 Brazilian nationals from the world's largest Lebanese community, flown back thus far after choosing to spend their "winter" holidays in Lubnan. On board: 72 Brazilian nationals, 4 Argentines and 11 Lebanese, whisked out of the country under life-risking conditions.

Yeah, it is all Israel´s fault....
written by Boris, August 06, 2006
Can’t blame the Israelis though... they are just evil and can’t help but commit unprovoked and brutal attacks against innocent civilian areas that just happen to be sprinkled with rocket launchers. I have no doubt that Israel out to kill as many as possible innocent Lebanese and that she deeply regrets the accidental loss of life of a few Hezbollah fighters.

I understand and appreciate Hezbollah’s approach of sticking close to the people, even trusting those civilian blocks with proximity to their arsenals, and CC centers. Hell, what can be better then gathering neighborhood kids around a rocket launcher and letting them push the trigger... Ain´t it fun? Win... win situation... If they live they could get a taste for firing missiles.... if they die... it is fantastic PR and an unbeatable recruitment move for the bereaved friends and family.

I mean, I am all for Democracy in Lebanon and have no problems with a heavily armed militia running a huge swank of it. Militia that is a proxy to a few very democratic regimes and that can and does wage war on neighboring country at will without running a plebscit or

It is obvious that you are very angry right now. I hope that you will write more when anger doesn't affect your way of stating things.
Israel Is an Amoral Country
written by A moral Boris, August 06, 2006
Israel too uses civilians to shield their military, it has its cache of weapons warehoused in Israeli Arab towns where they don't build bomb shelters of course. Israel has cmplete disregard for non-jewish live and proves this point by disregarding and intentionally causing all these civilians deaths.

Of course I know that your first reflex is to brand me an anti-semite. Well, no such luck... But anti Israeli I am. That country should remember the "Never Again" cry given by the jews after the holocaust; "never again" shall we stand silent as atrocities happen, "never again" shall we let a peoples be slaughtered.

So any decent person, any decent jew, should stand up and call for Israel's withdrawl from the occupied territories and Lebanon. Any person who knows about the holocoust should say NO MORE to the moral bankrupcy of the jewish state.

Today, Israel's only accomplishment has been to create more anti-semites and more terrorists. They hope that big bear USA comes to the region and do their dirty jobs, and that is why they hope to create a terrorist that will again target the USA.

Hoping for better and calling Israel what it is; An amoral country drunk with power and a terrorist state.

Philosophical Delusions

First of all, learn to use a dictionary or a use a spellchecker, and no, I don't care if english isn't your primary language. You claim to be an associate professor, so no excuses. My God, what a rambling bunch of nonsense! The crowning moment was labeling Saddam Hussein as an agent of the CIA; then again he is as delusional as you are (professional courtesy?). Hezbollah is first and foremost a TERRORIST organization, bent on killing everyone that doesn't agree with it's extremist viewpoint. Calling them an instrument on democracy is ludicrous. Islam extremists rule by ignorance and fear. Self-proclaimed Imams hand down edicts that conflict with their own religion! How can any sane person call Lebanon a democratic country is beyond me. I am so glad Brazil is far away from where I live, but a little worried that nut cases like you are coming from so close as Canada.

Over 2400 words of artful sophistry designed to cover-up the essential facts: Israel was attacked by Hezbollah, the controling government of southern Lebanon. Isreal has every right to engage and respond with attacks on the beligerent forces with whatever weapons of war they have whereever they find them, and to continue to attack relentlessly and with escalating destructive force until the enemy capitulates or is no longer responding due to the incapacity to do so. That is war. Hezbollah as a governing military force of southern Lebanon has the support of the population there and is responsible for their safety--if civilians are injured due to proximity to Hezbollah forces, Hezbollah is morally responsible for that. If civilians are injured due to Hezbollah tactics of concealment in civilian areas and structures, Hezbollah is likewises responsible for that. Isreal has no obligation to permit victory by their enemy by granting greater consideration to their enemies kith and kin than their barbaric enemy is willing to grant. They have no obligation to pre'serve Lebanese democracy or to tolerate attacks from Hamas just because Hamas won an election. The Israeli governments obligation is first and foremost to defend Israeli citizens from enemy attacks.

In short, Israel is right, Hezbollah is wrong, and this article is tendentious nonsense.
Pass on objectivity
written by k.Dee, August 06, 2006
I see in Brazil there is no requirement for journalist to remain objective. If the Mexican government were allowing Bib Laden to set up camp in border villages to attack Texans, you can bet your bottom dollar we'd be crossing it to take care of the situation. Of course Israel is a little smaller than Texas. The whole country is about sixty miles long and forty miles wide and yet its existence and its right to take up that tiny piece of real estate is the subject of covetous greed by millions of Arabs, who have literally millions and millions of other miles they can call their own. But no, they want that 60x40 mile piece of land. They want to exterminate an entire people because of their hate. They are willing to kill and kill and kill. They have shown no value for peace or for life, not for themselves, the innocent [Lebanese] they surround themselves with and hide behind, nor their enemy [Israel].
The assassin nations
written by George Barnard, August 06, 2006
History will recognize the US, Brittain and Israel as the Assassin Nations, and other western powers as their gutless cronies that helped kill Democracy in the larger part of the world whilst ever-disagreeing Sunnis and Shiites sleep.

What horrid karma all around!

The "demilitorized zone" in Lebanon is nothing other than a future corridor to the oilfields of Iran. Far away from the war's center, the US and Brittain will be safe for a time, but southern Europe will pay the price for Shiite anger.

A safe prediction.

Spelling Delusions

Hey, crakerz, use a spellchecker yourself. You should write: "bent on killing everyone that doesn't agree with ITS extremist viewpoint", not "it's", which is short for "it is". You don't know the difference between a possessive and a verb. And no, English (capitalized, please) is not my primary language either.

Perhaps the author of the article should take note of this and realize that he himself has been influenced by Hezbollah terror ideas. This group is composed of fanatical Islamic fundamentalists that seek to impose their culture through terror.Instead of writing your misguided information, try learning how to "Bossa Nova" with some nice wine and enjoy.
Israel and The Land
written by Babu G. Ranganathan, August 06, 2006
Dear Editor,

Greetings. Please consider publishing my article "Israel and The Land" (see link below).

Although I am a conservative (evangelical) Christian, I do not believe the Bible supports present day Jewish claim to Arab land in Palestine and beyond. Israel, now that it has been established, has the right to exist like any other nation, but not by special or divine right. I offer a Biblical and historical analysis and refutation of the popularly accepted theory of Zionism. It is Zionism (the keeping, building and expansion of Jewish settlements on Arab land, such as the West Bank,) which is fueling most of the problems with Palestinians and terrorism against Israel.

As long as most evangelical Christians believe modern Zionism is biblical they will continue to exert one-sided pressure in Washington D.C. in support of Israel's status quo in the region and prevent any pressure on Israel to pull back to its pre-1967 borders and discontinue building settlements on Arab land. Unlike before, all Arabs, including Palestinians, now will recognize Israel or, at least, will not militarily engage with Israel if Israel withdraws to its pre-1967 borders. That is why the information I expose in my article is very important so that others, especially evangelical Christians, may see that there is no biblical basis for modern Zionism.

Please feel free to reproduce my article. I do not ask for any compensation, monetary or otherwise.

Sincerely,
Babu G. Ranganathan*

The big picture
written by George, August 06, 2006
Europeans are conquerors. They conquered North And South America by ridding the lands of their indigenous peoples. This same ideology put European Jews into the Arab world to do the same. The Arab people are more sophisticated and aware than the indigenous peoples of the Americas were 400 years ago. They want their culture to reamin, and America and Europe in Persia is not right. Also, the humans on this planet who prefer to live their lives thru beliefs that they are "a god's chosen people" , want to live in a hostile environment to them just ot proove that their "beliefs" are just. Yet they are the most prejudiced people and they exibit bigotry more than any other culture in the world. Forget your beliefs and live your lives in peace. Continue to push your beliefs down the ARab world's throats, and die out of spite.
Big still picture
written by Boris, August 06, 2006
Of course, Europeans are conquerors. and Arabs are not? I mean, they were on a pleasure trip to Palestine and just decided to stay. They almost stayed in Spain and went as far as Vienna trying to hitchhike farther North-West. With a little bit more luck and dedication, the world could´ve been speaking Arabic now. Hm-m-m-m... North Africa, India....

Your picture may be big, but it is still and distorted.
Stereotypical Self-loathing Jew
written by tom jones, August 06, 2006
If I were Jewish, i'd be of the stereotypical Self-loathing kind.
I'd see similarities between that iconic martyed group of jews up on that mountain rock (now an inspirational 'tourist destination') who chose death rather than submission and modern day suicide bombers. If there were children up there innocents were sacrificed. I'd hate having to hate everybody on the other side, and getting into a situation where it's 'us or them.' Add on that i'm gay and i figure i'd be in counseling consumed by guilt enough to last a lifetime and longer.

Consider me a self-loathing American. Being currently unpatriotic and a non-believer is my way of staying sane- and a personal boycott of Israel and CocaCola-like corporations however insignificant, helps.

Reading your article I was pleased someone would observe things as well as you did, with spirit and nerve. Let the spell-checkers be damned, as, according to Christian Fundamentalist belief, are the Jews. And in that line to Hell are too the Christians who parade themselves Christ-like while giving means and ways to kill. Better be a martyr fearing eternal damnation and seek eternal reward than selfishly stake out earthly possessions, Or does the Bible have it wrong? Obviously what i don't know about Jews is a lot, but judging from what i'm seeing now i don't want to know more.

I lived and played in Lebanon for some years in the early 70's and I loved it- not as much as i love Brazil now, but a lot. It was there i started loathing pro-Israel American foreign policy. If I had known then what the future would bring....

a spell check here? NOT.

My regards to the Lebanese people and to the Brazilian-Lebanese community in Brazil. I'm an admirer of Carlos Ghosn, I'm reading his book Shift.

Most unfortunate in this conflict is the non-combatant deaths on both sides, Israeli and Lebanese, and most especially the children.

My opinion is Israel proportion of force is wrong.
Harmony? Or another skewed bias...
written by Boris, August 06, 2006
Lebanese and Israeli people deserve regards and support, IMHO. That would be a harmonic and unbiased position. Of course, collateral casualities are regrettable on both sides, yet it is important to distinguish that Lebanese collateral casulties are actually intentional and supported by the design of their supposed protectors -Hezbollah and are highly regrettable only by the Israeli side. While, in Israel, there are no collateral casualties from the Hezbollah viewpoint. Their take is that the only good Israeli, is a dead Israeli.

Another thing, "harmony", what would you consider to be an adequate proportion of force that Israel ought to apply in response to over 200 missiles indiscriminetly fired every day on her territory.

Not so easy...
written by Victor, August 07, 2006
I agreee with the mostly humble and intelligent comments of Boris, wo has contributed to this surprisingly flame free, for BrazzilMag, exchange. There are plenty of wrongs to go around. But to cast the nation of Brazil as on one side or the other is absurd. Brazil is a large, large enough to contradict herself. Brazil's Jews probalbly do not like what is going on any more than United States Jews, who are themsleves divided about what to do. Certainly Israel is a client state of the US, as Syria is of Iran. Does this make any particular action immoral. No. THe actions must stand on their own. It is unfortunate that, after WW2, the world chose, due to guilt, combined with the ongoing Jewish terrorist activity (argue with me but that is how the Britich saw it) in Palestine, to form a Jewish state in Palestine. It would have been much better to put it somewhere else, because, unlike Mel Gibson, I do not think the Jews are responsible for all the wars, I just think they congregate in the wrong places sometimes and others covet what they have (as a previous poster mentioned, even if it is a puny 60 x 40 piece of real estate, which , I might add, has none of the oil of its neighbors!) As a native English speaker, please excuse the fact that I do not alway spell check my posts, in English or Portuguese. I am not God and do not have the solution. I am saddened by the outcome so far. I love peace and I love change, and note that Brazil, one of my favorite countries, has not been in a war for many years abd through many changes: even after freeing its slaves, which caused the bloodiest war in my country's history, and many other great changes and provocations, right up until Bolivia stole its gas fields, which certainly would have resulted in military action by some countries. Brazil has many problems, but brazilians know what is worth living for, where many others only know what is worth dying for.

written by Boris, August 07, 2006
Now, you are obviously a fake Boris. The only Boris who managed to stoop that low was the notorious Boris Eltsin of Russia and he at least had the decency of getting drunk before uttering nonsense.

You wrote: "Israel too uses civilians to shield their military, it has its cache of weapons warehoused in Israeli Arab towns where they don't build bomb shelters of course."

I think you are mistaking Israel for Hizbollah. I can´t say that I am surprised for you are obviously ignorant of some of the historical facts, such as that Israel has already withdrawn from Gaza and Lebanon, but was forced to go back in to take out the cancerous growths of terrorist organizations that strive there. As far as your lie about Israel having military installations (ammo depos and such) in the Arab towns and villages. Would you care to substantiate it? or would it be another baseless accusation?

" Israel has cmplete disregard for non-jewish live and proves this point by disregarding and intentionally causing all these civilians deaths."

Absolutly, that is why Israel drops leaflets over the areas to be attacked advising civilians. Intentional? No, the only intentional thing here is you being a liar and an agitator.

"Of course I know that your first reflex is to brand me an anti-semite. Well, no such luck... But anti Israeli I am. That country should remember the "Never Again" cry given by the jews after the holocaust; "never again" shall we stand silent as atrocities happen, "never again" shall we let a peoples be slaughtered."

Nope, wrong again. I would much rather brand you a liar.

"So any decent person, any decent jew, should stand up and call for Israel's withdrawl from the occupied territories and Lebanon. "

Well, I don´t know what planet you are from, but Israel has already withdrawn from Lebanon and Gaza. It is also trying to disengage from the West Bank.

"Any person who knows about the holocoust should say NO MORE to the moral bankrupcy of the jewish state." You obviously do not qualify.

"Today, Israel's only accomplishment has been to create more anti-semites and more terrorists. They hope that big bear USA comes to the region and do their dirty jobs, and that is why they hope to create a terrorist that will again target the USA."

Actually, Israel has accomplished a lot more then that, but it is probably beyond your understanding or your propaganda objectives.

"Hoping for better and calling Israel what it is; An amoral country drunk with power and a terrorist state." Hope away. Now, what would be a moral country in your definition? Lets take this particular situation? Iran? Syria? Lebanon?

Not the scale of destruction the IDF has leveled on Lebanon. Which is 100x New York City 9/11.

Being that Hezbollah is an NGO and given the nature of the Middle Easts conflict with Israel I would suggest Israel take towards the path of negotiation in the less violent manner of Sun Tzu than in the perfered method of Clausewitz in winning a war.

Israel has the right....
written by Judge Dread, August 07, 2006
Who on earth is this Norman Madarasz? This is probably the most blatant piece of misinformed rhubarb I’ve read yet on the current problems in the middle-east.
I am not a Jew, but I realise that Israel has an unquestionable right to defend itself; any country would do the same, as another poster on this site has mentioned. Some writers here, unfortunately, have failed to take note that this situation is not like my country, Britain, fighting the IRA: that terrorist group were not seeking to wipe Britain off the face of the planet, and I think it makes a big, big difference to the level of response. That is why Britain did not bomb Republican parts of Belfast or, indeed, Dublin, which had a hand stirring the pot.
With that difference in mind, Israel should and must use all the force it can muster and for as long as is necessary. It must ensure that Hezbollah is rendered non-operational in every sense. I’m sure the Israeli people are behind their government in understanding this, and will not cave in to the platitudes of the UN for peace. Hezbollah are clearly responsible for the loss of Lebanese life by their tactics of hiding amongst the general population, so I see it as a matter for the Lebanese people to solve – i.e. kick the buggers out of your country if you want a stable democracy and a chance of a normal, prosperous country.
It is interesting to note also that the Lebanese army has remained strangely out of the picture over the last weeks: why haven’t they tried to engage Hezbollah, and prevent the missiles being launched into Israel that are forcing the Israeli military response? Why are they not making an attempt to truly protect their nascent nation? Funny type of army, isn’t it?
The reason is, as we all know, that the Lebanese government and the army are riddled with Hezbollah, and so support the terrorists’ actions whilst decrying the consequences.
The UN should wake up to the fact that Hezbollah will never keep to any agreement, and whatever they say about ‘peace’ in public now is only a façade to prepare for further violence later. In fact, this crisis, and the UN’s humanitarian knee-jerking to it, shows us again how lame and out of touch the UN really is with the middle-east. Now is not the time to invite terrorists to the table.

I really think we are down to two choices. Either we just have a large global war, the west against the middle east and get it over with, or we recognize the fact that both jews and muslims in the middle east are whackos and not support anyone. This is a good time to get independent of oil so we can stop sticking our noses where it doesnt belong, in the middle east. Otherwise, lets do the dirty dance of death and smash those middle easterners with everything we have...like the highlander right? There can be only one? Either way, this article was naive and stupid and I am tired of having to pick sides in a battle I could give two cents about...

1. Hezbollah does not have the armaments to wipe Israel off the face of the planet let alone defeat her in a conventional war.

2. Israel has nuclear weapons and if she wanted to use all the force she could she would have deployed at minimum tactical nukes.

3. Israel does not have the financial economy to sustain a war of attrition. Her GDP is smaller than Brazil's (Brazil actually has a large GDP).

4. Britan had dubious relations with Protestant militias that were in general more ruthless (one group committing acts of serial killings by butchers knives and dismemberment of innocent Irish Catholics) than the IRA, but they lacked the orginizational and leadership quality of the IRA.

Where is your justice ? dealing backstage in various corruption types ?

Obviously Brazil always expect the real Justice to prevail when that Justice must be given outside of Brazil simply because your are unable and unwilling to provide Justice in your own country.
The tragedy of Jean Charles Menezes was a good example : you expected Justice but you are not providing Justice for the innocents killed (and recognized as innocents by the SP governor) during your SP chaos.

Please be king enough to clean your own mess FIRST . It is quite dirty, stinky and shameful !

Thanks for the comments.
I would say to you that in the middle-east intentions should be taken very seriously, their links with Iran are very troubling. How long do you think it will be before Iran obtains some form of primitive, portable nuclear device and then starts to supply them to Hezbollah via Syria or other clandestine route? Would you not consider this to be a serious first step in the destruction of Israel, if they were deployed? True, Israel is suspected of having nuclear weapons, but is this the way the middle-east should go? The use, by Israel of nuclear weapons at this juncture would be absurd, I meant conventional armaments--sorry if I wasn’t clear on that.
Regarding the war of attrition, I suspect that the US will put whatever money is needed to ‘see things through’ on that level.
Regarding the IRA, my point still stands, I think. The IRA, an equally brutal bunch of thugs to Hezbollah, were not after the total break up of the Union, let alone the total destruction of Britain. The response needed to be different.

Hey Judge Dread. smilies/smiley.gif

Thanks for responding back in a civil manner. It's nice to be able to discuss, debate, disagree even with passion yet while still being civil.

I acknowledge the uncertainty in war. So anything is possible in those regards. Though anything is possible via the uncertaninty which is present in the nature of war not everything is likely. It is unlikely that Iran would give Hezbollah nuclear weapons in my opinion, because of the cost/benefit ratio. Iran knows that the United States has numerous ICMB hydrogen bombs that can reach all of Iran within 30 minutes or less from time of launch. Iran wants pride and prosperity not annihilation and humiliation. Every nation or NGO struggles for a greater good for itself and peace it envisions not total ruin.

Sizing up history the most likely nation to use a nuclear weapon would be the United States. The United States is the only nation in history to have dropped not one but to nuclear bombs on a civilian population. Furthermore when having her troops checked by Chinese regulars in the Korean War, the U.S. President, urged by John Foster Dulles, threatened to make a nuclear attack on China. Even in one of the most astonishing take downs of an urban center in the history of milittary battles, that of the U.S. Marines 'street fight' in Fallujah, Iraq, wherein they fought block for block, building to building, clearing tens of thousands of buildings in the city to kill or drive out 4,000 enemy combatants (labeled terrorists), she used phospherous bombs burning to disfigurment people in a most savage way. The United States also used these same weapons on Tokyo city, killing as many civilians as in Hiroshima or that of Nagasaki. To my knowledge these "fire bombs" are illegal yet they were used in Fallujah.

My point is nuclear weapons would be used first by the United States or Israel.

And you are correct the U.S. will finance Israeli war if push comes to shove. Israel has already been dependent on the United States to maintain the level of military it has for a decade or more now.

That is quite a statement, american crusader. And all in CUPS, wow! You obviously have seen plenty of war from your couch. The world is full of immature chicken hawks who are as (if not more) dangerous then religious fanatics and desperate people in dire situations. Keep the same attitude, at least, with people like you around we could be surely fighting the same wars a thousand years from now.

What the hell did this have to do with Brazil in order to place this story on the site? You are just some guy in Brazil with an opinion. We all have opinions. Yours of course is one sided, like most opinions in Brazil, but there are indepdndent thinkers here. You could have balanced this and at least tried to draw some connection to Brazil other than the fact that a few planes rescued people. Have you read any statements from government officials in regards to the war? You know of any organizations in Brazil, or thought of polling different organizations that are knowledgeable about the region and not just people at universitities and on the streets repeating anti-Israel, anti-US rhetoric?

Well, Brazil is anti-Israel since thera are so many Brazilians of Libanese origin, like Mick Jagger's ex-lover Luciana Morad who is an example of a decent and skilfull person of Libanese origin. smilies/grin.gif
This article reflects . . .

This article reflects the general stupidity of the Brazilian public as well as their attitudes.

Brazil is anti-Israel out of willful ignorance, just like she is willfully ignorant of her crime problem and corruption.

Brazil is especially stupid in her embrace of anti-American rhetoric and policy, since any real (i.e. non-Marxist) economist can point out the the anglo-saxon system of capitalism with strong, stable political underpinnings has consistently outperformed it's rivals. Developing countries, Brazil included, will suffer horribly if this system becomes significantly disrupted. Brazil, which had the potential to become another United States, elected to become Mexico. Smooth move!

Israel is fighting the west's fight against a system out to destroy the west. The advocates of a Caliphate want nothing less than a world wide Islamic state and don't shy away from announcing their intent. Some people, you know who you are, are just to f**king stupid to believe what they are told to their faces. Too bad this includes so much of Brazil.

If you take this route, you'll deserve it when the Muslims make you into eunuchs and put your women in burkas or in their harems.

Crime Against Humankind and Democracy? The Muslims in Lebanon don't want democracy you fool, they want theocracy! The Muslims on here vilifying Israel support the enemy of Western civilization. They are barbarians. Don't believe me, read what they themselves say they want to do:

Hamas chartar, 18 August 1988 (Preamble):
"Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it" (The Martyr, Imam Hassan al-Banna, of blessed memory)."

Hizbollah charter, February 16, 1985
"our struggle will end only when this entity is obliterated. We recognize no treaty with it, no cease fire, and no peace agreements, whether separate or consolidated."

Pew Research Center carried out a large-scale attitudinal survey of Muslims. Read the full report here, it is scary:

http://pewglobal.org/reports/pdf/253.pdf

Support for terrorism: All the Muslim populations polled display a solid majority of support for Osama bin Laden. Likewise, suicide bombing is popular. Muslims who call it justified range from 13 percent (in Germany) to 69 percent (in Nigeria). These appalling numbers suggest that terrorism by Muslims has deep roots and will remain a danger for years to come.

Are these the people you want to support? I hope Israel defeats them... because if they destroy Israel, we are next!
