2006 - October 2006

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da SilvaThe fat lady hasn't sung yet, but if the October 24 DataFolha poll is any indication, she is stepping up to the microphone. With the second round of the presidential elections slated for this Sunday, October 29, following three televised debates between the incumbent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the Workers Party  and Geraldo Alckmin of the Brazilian Social Democratic Party, the DataFolha poll shows President Lula with a commanding 21-point lead and the highest presidential approval ratings since 1990 when this poll first began.

Does this author´s resume lead you to believe that he is affiliated with the US government, Costinha? Doesn´t sound like it to me. The current priorities for the US start with Pacific Rim, Europe, and the Mideast, and end with South America and Africa. But there will always be scholars writing on various countries and subjects. They have the right to express their findings and opinions. You have the right to Achar Ruim.
Unfortunately for brazilians......

...your previous governments all said the same...and they all failed...after a good start !
You changed 8 times your currrency since 1942.
4 or 5 times you withdrew 3 zeros from the old currency to the new currency.
The last time, with the Real, you divided your old currency by a factor of 2,75

It is not without reason that Brazil is called a Boom and Bust economy.

It is too easy to accuse foreign countries of your previous failures, but WHO has elected Cardoso based upon his Plano Real ????? If it had succeeded you would have said it is because of You and as it failed you say it because of the USA or the EU !
Typically Brazilian style....just as Lula is doing now.
I also remind every Brazilian that under every previous government Brazil has always had a trade surplus with the EU and the USA ! Therefore critizing us your largest clients....is not necessatily fair !

As to your exports, dont be so proud ! What are you mostly exporting ?
Grains, coffee, sugar, ethanol, orange juice, iron ore, timber. If Brazilians believe they will become a developed nation with such basic commodities (except cars).....good luck !
And also all your cars that are anyway from foreign companies with their own technology, not yours, that created hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs in your country.

As to your ethanol here is a very recent comment made by a Brazilian Expert :
"Raw sugar for March delivery fell 7.9 percent to 11.59 cents a pound on the New York Board of Trade yesterday. Prices reached a 25-year high of 19.73 cents in February as surging crude oil prices increased demand for ethanol and diverted more sugar into producing the fuel.
``The sugar and ethanol business can only be economically viable if raw sugar trades between 11 and 12 cents a pound,'' Borges said in an interview in Geneva late last night"

Therefore even the rosy future projections of your government on ethanol....is by far not a sure thing....as they want you to swallow.. You barely break even for now....!!!!!!

And....ohhh sorry....

...in your exports I forgot to include : cattles, meats, chicken and swines !

Just add up your main exports mentionned here and aboveI and you will realize that well over 60 % are BASIC COMMODITIES, NOT INCLUDING CARS AND TRUCKS YET !!
well-which is it? Fart or burp?

author's response

Caro leitores,

just responding to the comments. First, the U.S. ran a trade surplus with Brazil from 1995-2002, radically reverted to Brazil's historically high trade surplus with the U.S. by 2006. You can credit or blame the Lula government for making this possible. Also, of the top five Brazilian exports worldwide, autos and airplanes rank 3 and 5 respectively. Also, while the EU imports mostly agriculural products, the U.S. imports mostly manufactured products from Brazil. So if "Reality" could just get real with the numbers please.

Embraer is third in aircraft sold, and fourth in terms of aircraft manufacturing jobs, worldwide.

Costinha seems also to be extremely xenophobic... and here I thought it was the Americans that were supposed to be xenophobic.
The right way

I live in Brazil and I have followed the politics and economics decision token in the last years. I think now Brazil is in the correct way to arrive in a safe position. Many people in Brazil don’t like the economic measures token by Fernando Henrique and continued by Lula, but the measures are correct. The only way is to insert the Brazilian economy in the world and to spend less money than the government can get with the taxes.
