Brazil Tightens the Noose on Colleges' Freedom of Expression PDF Print E-mail
2007 - February 2007
Written by Júlio Mariutti
Sunday, 04 February 2007 12:19

Main campus of Brazil's Universidade de São Paulo (USP) The sentencing of two students from the University of São Paulo (USP) to prison for political activity is a stark indication of the escalation of repression on Brazil's university campuses. Similar actions have been carried out at various universities recently, but the court decision handed down last December against the USP students is distinguished by its arbitrary character.

It's also of great significance the fact that it involves the most important university in the country, where until just a few years ago the military police did not dare to intervene.

In August of 2005, Daniel Sene, 25, and Ilana Tschiptschin, 23, both students of architecture, were arrested by the University Guard for painting on the pavement in front of the School of Philosophy the slogan "Brasilia 17," a call for participation in a demonstration against the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva that had been called in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia on August 17 of that year.

As if it were not enough to detain the students, university security immediately took them to a police station, where they were interrogated and held in a cell overnight.

Sene and Tschiptschin were subsequently sentenced to three months in prison. Their defense attorney appealed the decision to a higher court, but on December 18, 2006, the São Paulo Court of Justice upheld the sentence. Ibidal Pivetta, the students' lawyer, said he would appeal the decision once again.

Pivetta, a well-known lawyer for political prisoners, was president of the National Union of Students in 1958. Under the military dictatorship (1964-1985) he defended hundreds of prisoners against the terrible repression of that epoch of state terror. The majority of those he defended were then students, some of whom now occupy significant posts in Brazilian political life.

In numerous public statements, Pivetta has charged that the university's decision to bring the students to a police station represented a major "aberration of justice," and that the case recalled in a frightening way the dark days of the dictatorship.

"The recent case of Daniel and Ilana, from 2005, is one that I consider an aberration of justice, as well as an ethical and moral aberration," said Pivetta. Specifically, as to the action by the university security, he added, "What happened in their case, as well as in various other cases, is that this internal police did not act socially or culturally; it acted arbitrarily."

Asked how the security guards should have acted, Pivetta stated, "What should have been done in their case was to talk to the accused, ask these two persons - or invite them - to go before the university government and there, the whole body or those responsible for campus security would take or not take appropriate measures, assuring them total, broad and unrestricted right of defense, as is normal in other civilized universities.

"But instead, the security guards at USP violently arrested the two and dragged them to the police station. This is an assault on all principles of university autonomy, on the right of the university to govern itself."

A political demonstration within the university should be treated as a legitimate social act by the University Guard and not as a common crime. This becomes even more arbitrary given the fact that the students had only painted the pavement.

If they had painted the slogan on the wall of a USP building, Daniel and Ilana could have been charged with "destruction of property," but in this case they were accused of committing an "esthetic-environmental" crime.

That is, the only possible juridical pretext for convicting the two was that they had made the university more "ugly." However, this is a clear restriction on the right of political speech and amounts to saying that to speak out politically on the university is a crime!

In his argument before the court and in statements to the Brazilian press, attorney Pivetta seriously compared the case with the repression introduced on the universities under the military dictatorship in the late 1960s.

"The attitude of USP of wanting to have police power makes the university regress to the period of the military dictatorship," he said.

"For a case such as this with such a low level of damage to be brought before the courts is something that I saw only in the epoch of military repression," he told the press, adding, "It is the University of Sao Paulo that should have been in the dock!"

Speaking at a recent event honoring former political prisoners from the period of the military dictatorship - in which other speakers treated the repression as a bad memory - Pivetta took advantage of the occasion to call attention, in a note of protest, to "the youngest political prisoners," Daniel and Ilana.

In reality, even under the military dictatorship, the presence of the police on the USP campus was never institutionalized. Their presence was only sporadic, even minimal when compared with the permanent patrols that exist today.

Such was the case that, when the military police entered the university, it was classified as an "invasion." As Pivetta said in an interview with students: "In the time of the dictatorship itself, there were rarely invasions. There were invasions in the case of the CRUSP (student housing) or the university restaurant, but it was more difficult for the political police to go making arrests within the university itself. This case is one of complete arbitrariness. It has shocked all of the lawyers in São Paulo and public opinion to the extent that it has become known."

The other fact that cannot be ignored is that the graffiti painted by Daniel e Ilana was a call for a protest against the Lula government. The incident occurred at a moment of profound political crisis in Brazil, soon after the revelations surrounding the mensalão scandal (in which the ruling Workers Party-PT was paying monthly stipends to deputies of other parties in exchange for their votes in Congress), which implicated the principal figures in the PT government in the diversion of public money and the bribing of legislators.

According to a number of students at USP, during this period (August 2005) protests related to national politics were severely repressed on the campus. "There was a campaign by the university bureaucracy to tear down protest signs against the corruption and against the Lula government. These posters were torn down rapidly, while others were allowed to remain," one student said.

The conviction and sentencing to prison of Sene and Tschiptschin do not represent an isolated incident. Throughout 2006, an ever-more repressive process has taken hold at USP, something that had already been developing in recent years.

Various restrictions have been imposed on student activities, principally affecting political demonstrations, and various "security" measures have been put in place, which together are putting an end to the traditional and historic freedom of students within the campus.

The constant presence of the Military Police is the most serious of these changes, but at the same time, various other attacks carried out by the university bureaucracy have combined over recent years to drastically curtail student life at USP.

Entrance to the campus has become ever-more rigorously controlled; hours are being restricted; security cameras have been installed; the handing out of leaflets and the placing of "political" posters are frequently repressed; parties have been prohibited; the free spaces given to student organizations are being taken back and punishment of students for "infractions" is becoming ever more frequent.

This repressive wave, which is more severe in some universities and less in others, affects all students in Brazil. It is directly bound up with the destruction of education by the Lula government. This is being carried out through the privatization of the public universities by means of partnerships with the big corporations and banks, the transfer of public resources to the private universities through government programs, the mass layoffs of professors and initiatives such as "long-distance learning," which leave no doubt about where education is heading - into the chaos of the capitalist market.

Reducing the universities to the mere training of new workers for the labor market and totally linking research to the immediate interests of big business is the form taken by capitalist barbarism in culture and in the university.

Police repression, the billy-club and the stationhouse serve to guarantee the smooth implementation of the project of the banks and big business in carrying out the generalized privatization of culture and science, against the interests of both the vast majority of students and Brazilian working people.

Julio I got confused, in the last three paragraphs. So now the threat is coming from diffrent sides. In the begining of the article I thought it was coming from the left, but at the end of it, in the last three paragraphs, I began to think it is coming from the right. Maybe Lula now represents left, right, middle, and center. Gee, this is really bad, so many sides now to deal with.

I'm sorry about my joke. I'm really confused with so many labels these days.

They were arrested for painting the pavement, not because of repression. They can express themselves without destroying the college!! What a piece of crap article. I only wish the police were that effective in the whole Sao Paulo city because that city is full of grafitti and it's really ugly. The slogan "Brasilia 17" means absolutely nothing, I would never be able to tell what it is and if I saw that I would think they were doing grafitti in the college.

With the internet nowadays shouldn't they be more intelligent than that?

Yeah, I didn't get how the article correlated destruction of property via graffiti as a protected right. People in the U.S. get thrown in jail or fined for doing stuff like that. Better yet... my brother who has his Masters degree was once as a young student at university, arrested by university police with their guns drawn - it was for a warrant, however the warrant had been cleared along time ago but the fabulous city or county bureaucracy failed to clear it in the computer system. This incident was at the city's university that is part of the state's university system here (meaning run and funded by the state). The university police at this campus are actually part of the state police. It's not the first time the university police have drawn their firearms on someone either.

Oh! What the university police had their guns drawn on my brother for was a warrant for his arrest for an unpaid hospital bill for his child's birth at the county hospital.

smilies/grin.gif By the way... you know where the judicial systems got that "three strikes and you're out" from? They derived it from the sport of baseball. I always find it interesting how toying with peoples lives - and consequently the lives of their loved ones and dependents (such as children) - has gotten reduced to the popular game rules or sports. You would think a highly cultivated and civilized society would have a little more depth to them when it comes to their citizenry per the judiciary system?

Unfortunaly for you the days of white sheets and cross burnings are gone forever...so is a white America. The toothpaste is out of the tube, and even though you hate to admit it, we are everywhere, in your Goverment, your schools, your police forces and yes, your military. Those of us who have naturalized and there are millions of us, we continue to breed at twice the rate a white Europeans, we are breeding American citizens who will be your kids bosses. We are also encouraging more of our family members to continue to come illegally to increase the numbers. What Bush really says (and you are right, I consider him a terrorist), is that he supports a guest worker program that leads to citizenship, nothing temporary about that. The white majority will be gone in a decade and we will rule your largest urban areas and create a much better, less racist society. America is tired of the same old white incompetence, Carter, Bush, Clinton, Nixon...its going to be a women or minority weather you and your Nazi friends like it or not. Don't you know that the city governments of your largest cities are run by Latino city governments and declaring themselves "sanctuary cities" places where illegals "can drive and work" without fear of deportation or prosecution? Oh! What the university police had their guns drawn on my brother for was a warrant for his arrest for an unpaid hospital bill for his child's birth at the county hospital.

Thought you lived in a crack neighborhood???? It's not only common, but necessary for police to have their guns drawn on "niggahs" slinging rock in the 'hood!

That's what you rednecks don't understand, you all want to whine and talk, we will play as dirty as we have to to win the battle we are born and raised that way.

What my neighborhood is or isn't, or what it comprises or doesn't comprise is neither here nor there. The incident in question took place on a college campus, a particular campus that is certainly not considered part of the "hood" or residing within the "hood."

There´s lots I don´t know, but I do know about Mexicans and Latinos in the USA. I personally know a guy in Wilmington who says, why learn English, it´s all coming back to us anyway. He´s wrong . One of my best friends is a legal, naturalized strawberry farmer in the Central Coast. My Jr. Hi in Anaheim, now Western Hi, was 40% Latino. I ran around with kids in Santa Barbara who traced their families to the owners of the original land grants, and oh yes, also a family in the bay area for whom a town was named there. We stay with them when in the East Bay.

The dirty little secret that PPAL won´t divulge or hasn´t figured out is that the vast majority of Latinos assimilate extremely well, too well if you are in favor of passing the old language to their kids. I have a third gen Mexican-American friend near Calexico who doesn´t speak Spanish at all. Unlike some groups, Mexicans become fully integrated. A new group of Hispanics may be coming to the states soon, middle class from Venezuela. Their voting patterns will be similar to the Cuban-Americans.

There is not going to be another Alamo experience. There are no more Zoot Suiters. The Pachucos are all old guys. Have you noticed that most of the Border Patrol guys on TV are themselves Hispanic? What´s happening at the border today is as much or more about lawkeepers versus lawbreakers as it is Anglo versus Latino.

Some of you will know that I know what I´m talking about when I mention the half-cloverleaf shortcut to blend in to the bumper-to bumper traffic and cut at least an hour off your wait when leaving Tijuana.

Ah, Mr. Ric, instead of spewing nonesense seems to understand. Those that say that America will NEVER be brown must be still living in the unpopulated South, with blinders still and don't realize its already happened. Not many Donkey Carts in LA, or Miami, but lots of samll hispanic business and politicians who look out for their people first, blacks next...white...who gives a s**t. Don't worry, will be there too, in the rural South, in fact look around, we are there already, just not in the numbers we need yet. Big cities first, out lying areas next. Ric, you are correct, it's been happening for decades and there is a plan...a plan that is working. Great observation regarding the Border Patrol, almost 75% hispanic, where do you think their loyalties REALLy lie, a few hundred dollars in the right place to the right agent works everytime? I know you don't think it is true, you don't have to, it is best that way. Mass deportations, that's really practical. Don't think Walmart, the unions, lumber or other big agro business would ever let that happen and where do you think the big political contributions come from?. The white uneducated trash on this site really don't get it, the magnitude, our will or political prowness, America has taught us well. And the Minutmen, oh, were shaking in our boots, Granny with a badge, Geez how pathetic, 2 of em were put in the hospital last week in Arizona trying to apprehend 2 Mexicans...again, we are playing for keeps, you are just playing. Buenos Dias.

Don't put brazilians in this nonsense you are talking about. We don't speak spanish you idiot, and we couldn't care less what some clueless imbecile in the US thinks. We are not part of your "Brown American dream", get a clue.

The illegal mexicans in there are incapable of learning English! Don't you have enough brains for that? When I was there I saw lots of signs in spanish, that's incredibly stupid. If I were a politician there I wouldn't allow that to happen.

All immigrants from spanish speaking countries speak the proper portuguese in Brazil, we expect no less. Why is it different in the US? Is this some kind of "a*****eness" competition?

I am glad Mexico requires Visa for brazilians now. The organized crime will have a harder time now getting people through. This human trafficking business only propers because:

- There's demand for unskilled workers in the US;
- There is poor people willing to try;
- There are means of getting into (through the desert);

For brazilians now the 3rd item is more difficult. If people want to move to the US they should do it legally.

written by GTY, February 06, 2007
PP is a bit of a militant, but much of what he says is accurate. I live and work in South Florida, am white, but speak fluent Spanish. I am succesful because of my "Spanish speaking Gringo novelty", the company I work for is a huge American company that markets in Spanish to Miami as well as many other large American cities, sales to these Latin communities are now pushing $1B with my company alone. Do you really think my company would accept a mass deportation? I am sure they are letting their Congress person, located in Debuque, IA that would not be wise, as are hundreds of other large American businesses. Who will that congress person listen to if they need money for re-election? A hand full of pissed of citizens, or the companies that feed them donations.

There are large communites in Miami, Kendall, Doral, Hialeha, Miami proper where if you don't speak Spanish, you can not communicate, try finding your way around
Miami airport. Last week I saw a church in Doral that had a sign "English Language Service at 4:00". There are also the large hispanic only communites of Weston, Pembroke Pines, Coral Gables where hispanics own multi-million dollar houses, so the situation is not that simple...and I havn't seen a donkey cart since I have been here. But I do see lots of BMer's and Mercedes though.

Due to my business, I have lots of Hispanic associates, they to have told me that there are agents on the border who will take money to look the other way, these are people who have no reason to lie. While Miami has the "wet foot / dry foot" policy for Cubans, whom have been extrodinarily succesful here, the Cubans look out for the other Latin and Hispanic immigrants, including helping illegal hispanics and Latinos assemilate here. Do you really think you can't find a good job in Miami without proper papers...think again, Miami is a "Sanctuary City", we have illegal professionals working as Real Estate Agents and Loan Brokers.

While PPLL may be a bit of a militant, much of what he says is accurate. The hispanic and Latin communities continue their expansion and you now see entire communites in the once tradtionaly white middle class neighborhoods of Pompano Beach and Boca Raton, this change has happened in just a few short years. While I may not be entirely happy about the situation, I have learned to accept it and make a living here by understanding a different language and culture. Those of you with kids, I would advise you to teach them the same.

As history has shown, time after time, the will of the majority of american people always win out at the end of the day. New laws have been passed, others being contemplated. Walls are being built. The american public is fed-up with the illegal situation and they're not going to continue to accept the way things are today.

If you think big business, as GTY clearly stated, does not have an impact on your government, think again (ever heard of lobbyists), the unions are also powerful pro immigrant forces, it shows your level of education, which by the way is another issue. We really appreciate you letting our kids attend your colleges for free and at the expense of white kids just as qualified...we love your liberals, while your kids go to community college we are in the top universities.

As for a Brazilian, you guys have always thought yourselves better than us, that's OK, its now a Mexican Coyote taking sister an daughters accross the borders. Go from Salem to Portland on old 99, not the I-5, on your way to the drags in Woodburn, and old 99 is Mexican City. It´s an agricultural area. Iowa, same thing, based on agriculture, not as was said, big cities. Indeed the Mexicans have arrived. All over...

Many don´t realize the extent to which Canada, US and Mexico are already working as a unit. Hybrid seed companies in certain crop categories used to be based in the US, now in Mexico. And MCI buses are made jointly US/Canadian. Others US/Mexican. MCI, Dina, and auto manufacturers also.

If the US government didn´t think it could control Mexico they never would have let Mexico corner the hybrid seed business.

It´s in the US government´s best interests to let the conspiracy theories alone. In the use or be used, or screw or get screwed, category, nobody can outdo our leaders in Washington. That´s what´s so infuriating to a lot of foreign business types who consider themselves really sharp and cutthroat, and here comes some dufus American that can´t even get a handle on the most basic local customs, and comes across way too chummy, and then he goes home and they look atthe fine print and they´ve been screwed.

Some of the future movers and shakers will be hispanic, a few more will be anglos, some black, but an increasing number will be asian, because as a group they have more really smart people, along with the Jewish. I´m neither. Just looking at the facts as I see them. Think the USA changes policy based primarily on the ballot box? Think again. The insiders look around for a candidate they can develop. That was true in Brazil with Collor as well. Wake up.

But the US people as a whole are pretty upset about illegal immigration and see this time as their last chance to do something. Maybe they will and maybe they won´t, but the politicians now in power had better get it just right or they´re toast.

First, the American people have no will, its why we have have gained so much strength in the first place, they havn't the will to deal with us, nor the will to deal with a war they should have won years ago. The problem now (your problem, our blessing) is that the immigration topic is no longer front and center and it will be dealt with by a majority immigrant friendly democratic governement. Are you blind? Hillary, McCain and Guliani, all the front runners are for a guest worker program that leads to permanent citizenship...Bush will sign a bill that comes up to. The 07 candidates with the toughest immigration stands were just swept from office, even in states like Arizona, Texas and Colorado. Why do you think that is, not enough white people to vote. You mention incumbants, but the more populated a city or state, the more congress people they have, most big cities have gone brown, so most of the incumbents will be bending over for their brown consituents so they can keep their cushy jobs. Bo, you are not analyzing the situation with intellect (big news), you are analyzing it with emotion. Something IS going to get done regarding immigration, but you and your cross burning buddies are sure not going to like it. Hispancis and Latinos are the new power, the new force, not the Christian right or the liberal left, but the brown middle. Well, PPLL, I think that as a whole latino young people come closer to the old American idea of family, religion, obeying parents, working hard, than the white kids do. The latinos are more like the Americans of the 50´s in those areas than the offspring of The Great Generation.

If someone has a problem living around people of another color or ethnic background, they can move to North Dakota or Skokie.

But looking at this in an analytical way detached from emotion, I don´t think La Raza or MEChA can pull it off. They really screwed up last year with those Mexican flags in those demonstrations. It let the cat out of the bag. Peaked too soon. Now seen by the eavesdroppers as something to keep an eye on. Remember that a whole bunch of those people, not all certainly, are 85-95 on the IQ scale. And even a a whole, I think the expectation is that given a showdown all latinos will support their ethnicity, even if perceived as not being in their own personal interests.

The idea that your leaders are going to outsmart the Jews like Ron Unz, Eli Broad, outspend them, wrest control away, I don´t see it. And you stand the chance of being grouped in peoples´minds with Nazis, skinheads, and Palestinians. No doubt you are plenty smart but don´t expect the Bumper Boyz or all the guys living around the LA county hospital and Boyle to get into a bloody war if the going gets tough, just in memory of grandpa´s life back in Matamoros. But we´ll see, won´t we?

Interesting that you picked up on the fact that Brazilians consider themselves better than Mexicans. Thought I was the only one to notice that.

The blacks are really upset that latinos took all their custodial jobs around Civic Center as a result of changing to a contract system. Think you can handle it if they join the whites in the coming conflict? Which is what some latinos are predicting, a conflict. Think ten pachucos could withstand ten Zulu Chiefs?

It's actually prett amazing, but the threat of US power no longer that big a deal. Sure they can bomb the s**t out of you, but any country that can withstand the inital onslaught and will stand and fight can kick there asses. There congress has no stomach for it, the American people have no stomach for it...and the American soldiers have shown themselves to be cowards and war criminals. While there is a lot of "we will kick your ass retoric" on this site. The last thing the imperialists are going to do is further isolate themselves by illegaly occupying another country. We have oil and have them completly by the balls, I love that Chavez is sqeezing them!

You hit the nail on the head there Ric. When any group burns the american flag in public, for all to see, starts waving ANOTHER nations flag, and even changes the words to the national anthem, they've got the full attention of U.S. citizens, the gov't, and armed forces. When and if any conflict would ever occur, which I would lay 10,000-1 odds it never will, they simply can't be that stupid, the americans will band together, as they always do, blacks, whites, americans of all ethnicities, and it won't be a good thing for the mexicans. One has to shake his head at a country that has 10 million illegals in another country and is "demanding" their rights, descecrating that nations flag, waving another nations flag, etc. Those certainly aren't considered "americans". If one is illegal in another country they have no legal rights, only to go back to their country of origin.

As far as this horses**t about the war in Iraq, people can believe, the U.S. is not only fighting the factions in Iraq, but from all over the middle-east. As was done at the end of WWII, if the U.S. believes its going to lose millions in ground combat, and by using nuclear weapons it would actually save hundreds of thousands, if not millions of lives, it's certainly not out of the question. The japonese were quite a formidable opponent until Nagasaki and Hiroshima when they saw that we could send them back to the stone age if decided.

Mexico's economy is nearly 100% dependant on the american economy. If/when the Mexican gov't. doesn't continue to work together with the american gov't. in helping to resolve these problems of waves of illegals coming through our borders, first we'll slap an economic embargo on 'em and take it from there.

Oil. Venezuela owns the PDV gas stations in Brazil. Talked about buying Ipiranga, major oil distributor. "Ouviram do Ypiranga as margens placidas"...excuse any typos, didn´t look it up, but that´s from the Brazilian National Anthem. Oil company with a name that goes to the heart of Brazil´s history and it may be or has already been bought by Chaves. Wake up and get out of your Berço Esplendido. That can´t be in the national interest.

Mexico supplies 11 percent of American oil. But the main field is drying up sooner than expected, may go down to nine percent soon. Will that change Mexico´s priority position in the eyes of Washington? Dunno.

Last Thursday I had an early morning meeting with the secretary of tourism of my state, then the president of the OAB of brazil, and capped off the day with a meeting with an "assesor" of the governor of our state.

What did you do??? Have a meeting with your principal?

The irony here, is that mestizo Mexicans are essentially what the United States would classify as "Native Americans" (Amerindians), being that the United States does not have a "mestizo" racial category and hence classifies mixed-race Amerindians who look white (or black) as [b[Indian.

So based upon U.S. standards of racial classifications, much of or all of the Southwest and West coast of the United States are the ancestral home lands of the Indians (mestizos) known as Mexicans. If Latin Americans and Brazilians are wrong for recognizing mixed-race peoples as mulattoes and mestizos and whatever else... then a U.S. citizens sounds like a backward hick from the 1700's to be calling Mexicans (majority mestizo) "illegal immigrants" rather than Amerindians or Native Americans migrating back into their ancestral homelands - since the U.S. considers mestizos as full "Native Americans."

You should learn a little about history. When countries sign treaties, giving up lands, etc., you don't later say, "well, that used to be ours, so now we'll take it back."

The Mexican Cession is a historical name for the region of the present day southwestern United States that was ceded to the U.S. by Mexico in 1848 under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo following the Mexican-American War. The cession of this territory from Mexico was a condition for the end of the war, as United States troops occupied Mexico City, and Mexico risked being completely annexed by the U.S. The United States also paid $15,000,000 ($298,310,309 in 2005) for the land, which was half it had offered for the land prior to the war. Under great duress, Mexico accepted the offer. The land ceded by Mexico is 14.9% of the total area of the current United States territory.[1]

Not only did the americans kick their ass in a war, and could've annexed the entire country if they so chose, but they paid 15 million dollars, in 1848!!!! Which today would be over 300 million dollars!! Guess we now know how the term came about...."indian giver".

From 1796 on, American boats came ashore regularly. The Russians came to Northern Californiain 1809, ever been to the Russian River, and Fort Bragg?

In 1822, a newly independendent Mexico claimed California. But in 1931, the hispanic Pico in L.A. was part of an independence movement against Mexico. Pico House, Pico Blvd.

John Bidwell was the first to come over the mountains, 1841. One of his direct descendants, same last name, spent several weeks with us here in Brazil a few years ago. He wishes that the Bidwell Mansion in Chico still belonged to the family.....

And as you have noted, Mexico gave it up by treaty and payment in 1848. Many hispanics today, faced with this info, are like the doll with the string, you pull it and it always says the same thing.

I'm well aware about the triumphs in the war between Mexico and the United States. Your commentary, especially what I placed in bold, is a red herring to the point I raised. My point had to do with U.S. logic on "race" and as pertains to ancestral lands of those they define as "Native Americans." I raised no issue of nationality, "race" and nationality do not equal the same thing. Creating red herring arguments about victors in war, signed treaties (I'm sure the "Trail of Tears" and numerous other "Native American" experiences are not without relation to signed treaties), and the Brazilian, Japanese, Spainard, French, and Chinese nationals has nothing at all to do with my point, logic, and the inherent truth in Mexican mestizos having ancestral homelands in the Southwest and West coast of the United States as we define - defacto at least - what constitutes the biological formation of the race known as "Native Americans" and the geographical terms of what we call their "ancestral homelands" - by U.S. racial standards that is.

If Mexican mestizos are not "Native Americans" (Amerindians) and if they have no justified claim to "ancestral homelands" in those regions of the United States as I stated, based upon race and not nationality, then it can only be concluded that the Latin Americans and Brazilians are right and more consistent in their developed cultural identifiers, differentiators, and terminology for mixed-race peoples such as mulattoes and mestizos, and the United States is less right and more inconsistent in their use and applications of their narrow racial (usually binary) categories.

@ bold: Yes, that's exactly what it stands for to every generation of Amerindians in the United States, and to every young black American blues singer or rap artist that ever put out an album or CD. I'm sure that's also what it stood for to all those Vietnam war protesters in the U.S. that burned the American flag.

As to it's "sacredness," I'm well aware most patriots of the United States essentially view the American flag as symbolically higher than the cross, crucifix, or Star of David. Essentially the American flag is pagan worshiped symbol on par with any major religion (not surprising then that every generation the American flag is carried forward into some new crusade in martial warfare). But is it sacred? To a dumbed down American (USA) population perhaps yes. To those who have understood the global market and almighty worship of profit and the "bottom line" I hardly think they the archaic affection to the U.S. flag - they understand manipulation of the U.S. people as well as quietly, slowly, and efficiently selling them out is much more financially profitable. So, no, if the American flag was sacred it would not be contracted to be made in Communist controlled China, who by cheap laborers reduce cost of production, in a country known for worse human rights records than Cuba (who we have an embargo against) and most definitely more so than the great nation of Brazil, only to be shipped to the United States as trinkets flung off porches by poles from a population increasingly unable to read at an elementary school level the daily news papers.

Do you have any idea how totally stupid you sound trying to diminish the meaning of the american flag because some may be made in another country???

Flag manufacturers in the US currently produce over 100,000 flags of all types each year. Most American flags are manufactured in the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the value of American Flag imports in 2003 was an estmiated $6 million dollars, $4.5 million of which were imported from China. Total US Flag imports for 2000 were valued at $747,800. By contrast, In 2001 the value of US flag imports totaled $51.7 million, a result of high post-September 11 consumer demand.

As usual, you're full of s**t. And not that any of this matters, where the american flag is made. It is the flag of the United States of America, and for americans, it has meaning. Obviously it doesn't have the meaning to you that it does to most americans, that's truly a shame.

Well I got my information from off of a U.S. news program, interviewing an executive at Ethan Allens (I believe it was). However if the information I heard and have repeated is wrong I'm man enough to admit it and accept it. If that's the case then it's just another good lesson for me to double check on sources of information.

And yes, you are correct, the American flag means little to me.

There´s more, Bo. California was only Mexican for 26 years, from 1822 to 1848. Cabrillo dicovered San Diego for Spain in "1542. Drake hit the coast in 1579 and called it New Albion, for England.

Pico House, Pico Blvd."

You stupid ass. California was part of the Aztec empire. It is part of La Raza and like, Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico it will come back to it. It is just a matter of immigration and fertility. These are ours already. It is the new America.

Texas Lawmakers Proposing Tough Immigration Legislation

KCBD

A call for tougher immigration laws is sweeping across the country and Texas seems to be leading the pack. Voters in the Dallas suburb of Farmers Branch will soon decide if it will be illegal to rent apartments to illegal immigrants. Now, some state legislators say the children of illegal immigrants should not receive state benefits.

House Bill 28 would deny babies of illegal immigrants from receiving state benefits such as food stamps, health care or public housing. That challenges the long standing federal policy of granting U.S. citizenship to babies born on American soil, no matter what their parents’ immigration status is.

* Requires that all individuals receiving state benefits sign one of two affidavits, either stating the individual is a U.S. citizen or a legal alien.
* All “legal alien” affidavits must be checked in the federal SAVE program database to verify lawful eligibility for public benefits.
* Provision is effective July 1, 2007.

Immigration anger drives lawmakers
State's lawmakers pledge to take up hot-button issue

-For one thing, lawmakers say they will renew their efforts this year to cut off state-funded social services to illegal immigrants and give driver's license exams in English only.
-Those include bills that would allow local law enforcement agencies to check an immigrant's legal status and to more aggressively punish businesses that hire illegal immigrants.
-Other bills would limit the acceptable forms of ID used to renew car registrations and deny health care and social services to those here illegally.

Virginia House Approves Bill On Illegal Immigration
Aim Is to Block Access To State, Local Funds

"This is to make sure the monies that are going to charities and organizations go to the people they are intended to go to, which is legal immigrants," said Del. Jackson H. Miller (R-Manassas), the sponsor of the bill. "The ultimate goal is to make the commonwealth of Virginia an unwelcome place if you are in this country illegally."

I fully support the steps being taken to address the illegal immigration policy here in the US that has been described in the above postings, in particlular the crack down on employers who hire illegal aliens, there have been some big raids at big companies latley and I look for them to continue. Still, you have to undertsand the economic realism involved here, so I also support a temporary guest worker program, even one that could lead to citizenship for those that play by the rules. The biggest challenge is then securing the border, now that is a big one. I really don't see how it can possibly be done. There are not enough National Guardsmen (who have limited law enforcement authority anyway) nor Border Patrol Agents. As for the Border Patrol, you will find over 80% have hispanic last names...that makes me uncomfortable as well. Do you really think Agent Lopez is going to detain Tio Lopez? Therefore, the only answer is a technological one and then making it tough if the do get in. I should be interesting in the next several years, let's see if our politicans have the courage to deal with this.

Aztecs and Apaches are all descended from Chief Twin Stinson.

The Cherokee is the father of all Seminoles, Senecas, and Dakotas, Warriors with Lances and Archers. They are directly related to the Brazilian Tupí, Corisco and Carioca. Yes, the Cariocas. This is all true and you may take it to the bank.

We now have our own states from which to build the revolution from, help more of our brothers and sisters cross over and since we have the power and the money, encourage more children, while whites still have 2 kids a family we still have 4 or 5...it's working. Isn't it great that 70% of ICE enforcement agents have hispanic last names, do you really think our brothers and sisters with ICE are committed to keeping us out, you know as well as I, that every Coyote knows the right place at the right time. 24 Illegal Immigrants Arrested After Asking ICE Officers for Work

Wednesday, January 24, 2007

BALTIMORE — Twenty-four day laborers in the country illegally were arrested Tuesday when they asked for work from federal immigration agents who had gathered in a parking lot after an unsuccessful undercover operation, authorities said.

The agents had regrouped at a 7-Eleven parking lot after an a search for illegal immigrants who had been ordered to leave the country, said Marc Raimondi, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency spokesman.

The day laborers admitted they were in the country illegally after they asked the ICE agents whether they needed workers and the agents responded by asking them, in Spanish, where they were from, Raimondi said.

"Today's operation was not planned, but nevertheless, when we encounter immigration status violators, our mandate is to enforce the law," he said.

Among those arrested were six who had criminal records in the United States; eight who had been deported or ushered to the border to leave the country voluntarily, only to return; and one who had been caught six times trying to enter the country from Mexico, according to ICE.

761 Illegals Rounded Up in Southern California Sweep, One of the Largest Ever

Wednesday, January 24, 2007

SANTA ANA, Calif. — Federal officials said Tuesday they arrested more than 750 illegal immigrants over the past week in the Los Angeles metropolitan area in what they described as one of the biggest such sweeps in U.S. history.

The weeklong series of raids in the five-county region targeted illegal immigrants who had previously been deported for crimes or had ignored final deportation orders.

The raids netted 338 illegal immigrants who were arrested at their homes and apartments and 423 who were identified in area jails since Jan. 17. Those already jailed will be transferred to federal custody when they finish serving their state sentences, said Virginia Kice, spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The sweep netted illegal immigrants from 14 countries in all, including Mexico, Honduras, Ukraine, India, Japan, Poland and Trinidad.

State proposals target undocumented workers
Florida lawmakers are proposing laws that crack down on the hiring of undocumented immigrant workers.

Frustrated with the federal government's shaky grasp on illegal immigration, states and cities are increasingly taking the law into their hands by going after businesses that hire illegal workers.

The latest effort comes from state Rep. Juan Zapata. The Miami Republican is pushing a bill that would fine companies with illegal employees and strip them of state tax breaks and benefits.

The bill would allow the state to penalize businesses busted by the federal government. The state could impose fines of $25,000 per violation, on top of taking away property tax breaks from farms, liquor licenses from restaurants and construction licenses from contractors.

His bill reflects a nationwide trend. Ten states last year enacted legislation that would crack down on employers that hire undocumented workers, and at least 20 more are considering similar laws, according to the American Council on International Personnel, a Washington-based group that advocates for businesses and worker immigration issues.

The last I checked, there were slightly over 3,000 americans killed, and well over 45,000 Iraquian's. May not be accomplishing our objectives in the timeframe we would like, but we have staying power. smilies/wink.gif

Your problem PP is that you think that all latinos are along the same lines as your ideology, and the majority are not. Only the illegals, and not even all of them. Those neighborhoods you mentioned, mexicans aren't even the majority, their Columbians, Venezuelans, and in some, black americans. You people have enough problems among yourselves, not to mention the blacks. Speaking of which, smart money is on the blacks when/if there is ever a showdown there. You start speaking of physical characteristics?? "fat, white, marshmallows, etc", lol. You people are small in stature and sorry to be rude, but the vast majority just plain stupid. The latinos that are smart have assimilated and are educated. As Ric stated earlier, you idiots showed your hand way too early when you burnt american flags and went waving mexican flags in the street last year. That was stupid! But I'm well aware, you just can't help yourselves....."La Raaaaaza". We could've completely annexed Mexico 150 years ago, we chose not to. We were in Mexico City for god's sakes. While Latinos comprise 14% of the U.S. population, you are represented in the house of representatives by 5% of their members, and ONLY 1% in the Senate! While jewish people, who only represent 4% of the american population, have 13 jewish senators, or 13% representation, and 30 members in the house, while latinos have 27 members in the house. You see my "La Raaaaaza" friend, it's not sheer numbers that win battles and accomplish objectives, the Jews weild great influence over american policy, it's because they're not stupid. In a battle of wits, you're virtually unarmed.

If you and your ilk are truly interested in weilding great influence in the United States, you certainly should be telling your "La Raza" buddies to stop burning american flags, changing the words to the national anthem, and waving Mexican flags in the street. With that type of attitude your in an untenable situation. But one thing is for certain, I for one loved the demonstrations in the streets last year, loved seeing those illegals burning american flags and waving another countries flag in the streets, because it woke the american people up. We now see exactly what were dealing with from this group. And as I have posted above, and could post dozens upon dozens of other situations that are exactly the same, all the states passing illegal immigration legislation to cutoff gov't. funding for illegals, take away the "rights" to education for illegals, to gov't. services, and last but not least making it a felony for business owners to employ illegals. Afterall, when the american businessman knows he may go to prison, lose his business, have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more, in penalties and fines for hiring illegals, he will stop. And that my friend is when the illegal population, and those interested in entering the U.S. illegally, will greatly diminish the trend, as there won't be anymore incentive to come illegally.

Best of luck! Now go cut some lawns! The day is wasting! smilies/wink.gif

Before Bill Clinton was sworn in, he said that he was going to find out the truth about UFOs once he became president. That came out in the news. He was going to share the info with his pals.

Since that day we haven´t heard any more about it.

When top elected officials take office they get an eduction real fast about what the facts are and what the priorities are as defined by those running the show. And by the time a candidate gets elected he owes favors to a lot of people.

Doesn´t matter to me personally if hispanics become the majority in some states. But radical hispanics will never convert the non-hispanic to their point of view, whereas the higher people go up the ladder, the greater is the tendency for them to reject
extremism and look out for their careers, and become responsible citizens. It´s like a diode, only goes one way. The Establishment can preempt leading hispanics but the radical agenda can´t convert the non- hispanic. Not fair, is it?

Witness the vilification of the hispanic mayor of L.A. Now he´s called a traitor by the radical hispanics, maybe because he now realizes what the facts of life are and knows that he is expected to be the mayor of all the people, not just one segment of a focus group. How hard is that to figure out?

Excerpt from that yahoo news article (Feb. 9, 2007)
It is this trend in attitudes that the Klan hopes to use in recruiting new supporters among those opposed to US immigration policies and practices, according to Klan leaders and expert observers.

In a way, it's a reversion to the Klan's nativist origins.

"While we generally think of it as a white supremacist organization, the Klan at its peak was virulently anti-immigrant, particularly with regard to Catholic immigrants, Irish, and southern European," says Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino.

That was in the 1920s, when the Klan numbered about 4.5 million. The KKK had dropped to an estimated 60,000 members during the civil rights era (1954-65) and had bottomed out at fewer than 2,000 members by the mid-1970s, says Mr. Levin, a civil rights attorney who teaches criminal justice.

Levin notes that any rise in KKK activity and membership today comes off a near-historic low, and "some of the chapters are rather slim pickings."

"I'm more worried about the exploitation of the immigration issue generally than I am about the Klan exploiting it," says Levin. "I think the Klan is going to hit a ceiling because of the negative symbolism, the negative baggage."

But, he adds, "The whole nature of hate group membership has changed with the advent of the Internet. You can take bits and pieces from whatever group you like without necessarily becoming a card- carrying member."

Although some KKK adherents still don robes and pointed hoods to hold rallies and burn crosses, younger followers are more likely to look like skinheads or neo-Nazis, decorated with racist tattoos and listening to white power rock bands such as Skrewdriver and Brutal Attack.

During the first half of this decade the number of hate groups in the US increased 33 percent to 803, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. The Ku Klux Klan was an important part of that increase.

e harmony, illegal immigration legislation has nothing to do with "hating" a specific racial or ethnic group. It's about enforcing laws. Illegals, whether they're from England, or Mexico, it doesn't matter. I, as well as the vast majority of americans are all for immigration, but it must be done LEGALLY. That makes sense for even the most dense, so it should for you as well.

I'm sure you saw the demonstrtations on TV last year where in particular the mexicans were burning american flags and waving the Mexican flag. If they love Mexico so, then they should return. The very definition of immigrant includes the words, "to assimilate".

Ask any brazilian what they would do if they had 10 million illegal Argentinians in Brazil, protesting in the streets, "demanding" rights that they have no legal means to, burning brazilian flags, and waving the argentinian flag. Believe me when I say, there would be people killed in the streets, and imo, justifiably so.

Those alleged 800 hate groups are using utilities and paying the taxes on those services, having posters made or at least buying the materials themselves, using fuel, having pizza brought in, paying rent, property taxes, and licensing their vehicles.

Not that each of the 800 will be doing each of these things, but paying for ad space, buying ammo, getting catalogs and ordering from U.S. Cavalry and Cabelas, buying books from Paladin, beer from the 7-11.

Going through costly divorces in the case of the real hard core corps, buying cases of H&H´s. With Mauser actions.

All of this adds to the Gross National Product. Since they can do whatever they want within the letter of the law in a free country, let´s just be thankful they are working, earning, paying and contributing.

I posted an article which I was neither the reporter and author of nor the copy editor that chose to print the story. Generally Yahoonews places up news articles from the Associated Press or from other national or international wire services that are considered informative or of interest to the broadest range of readers around the United States and perhaps even internationally. Essentially the story nor considered interest (via the process a story goes through to be chosen to be printed by numerous editors and veteran reporters) of the story was a creation of "e harmony's."

I neither inferred most Americans were supporters of the KKK or other hate groups nor did I even directly state that. What I did infer was that there are many hate groups currently operating in the United States (no matter their size), a number which I was surprised at, and that for whatever reason something is a causation to this, and hate groups like the KKK appear from news reports like this to be using the immigration issue of Mexicans to not just increase their appeal but draw Americans (USA) unassociated with them into a united effort (if but temporarily) against Mexican immigration.

Personally I believe in the Brazilian model of assimilation more than the U.S. model of separate multicultural tribalisms that work and associate together just for national ideals and the pursuit of wealth. Both models have worked well thus far and both models have created a diverse and fairly harmonious (by that I mean lack of Balkan style ethnic civil war) national society unparalleled any where in the world perhaps. But the U.S. model is built heavily upon pride found in race, be it black, white, Mexican, Asian or other and hence and race being the central component to all community development and economic and political power, so that if the economy of the United States ever bottomed out, hate groups - a beloved a cherished social freedom in the U.S., would likely flourish to the days of the early 20th century.

I haven't much followed 95% of the commentary being posted in this thread on the Mexican and Latino immigration issue, I've scanned over most of it, but from what I've briefly read I would tend to view how the Mexican immigration social pattern is unfolding somewhere in between Ric's view and PPLL's view. First and for most, historically the U.S. has always had this degree (and worse) of outburst against large immigration patterns. So I find the outbursts no big deal from an historical level because judging by history they will subside over a decade or so and so long as economic prosperity flourishes. The Irish and Jews probably got treated worse than the Mexicans coming over today. But while many Mexicans do assimilate into U.S. culture, unlike previous ethnic groups they by-in-large have resisted the same degree of assimilation into U.S. culture. But this is not simply Mexicans fault. The U.S. historically recruited immigrants from Europe and rejected citizenship to Chinese laborers (The "Chinese Exclusion Act") and they never searched for immigrants from Europe and held there boarders tight against the brown masses within Latin America. Mexicans are aware of this to some degree, they also have very strong community and familial ties, unlike mainstream white and black America, their women even respect their men that work hard, have strong work ethic, for small pay, something which is anathema within mainstream black and white America. This makes them a formidable force - a growing force to be reckoned with. Their birth rate alone out paces blacks and whites and needs no dependence on immigration any more. They currently make up significant (and growing) numbers in venerable organizations like the United States Marine Corps - in fact the best Marine I ever served with or knew was Mexican that was a Scout Sniper.

There is one very important thing that you, and other lib's need to keep in mind, there is a BIG difference in "immigration", and illegal immigration!!

Is it fair to give amnesty to those that broke the law, circumvented the system, to the hundreds of thousands, millions, that have gone through the system correctly, legally, and many of those are still waiting for their documents??

Every country in the world has an immigration system, the U.S.'s system, believe it or not, is one of the MOST lenient. Try immigrating to brazil, if you don't marry a brazilian, or invest at least $50,000 dollars, or apply for a retirement visa, and must make at least $2,000 DOLLARS per month, you can't get one! And this isn't only in Brazil, MANY countries have the same type of policies.

Once again E, you need to remember, there is a BIG difference, all the difference in the world, of immigration, and ILLEGAL immigration.

Liberals? I believe both a number of college educated Democrats and Republicans supported and pushed NAFTA through. So long as it a low paying working mans problem it is never an "American problem" it only becomes an "American problem" when a great number of those above the poverty line have a problem with it - tragedy in New York vs tragedy in New Orleans. When a significant number of those above the poverty line have a problem with something then the college educated begin their manipulation on the non-college educated with rhetoric about patriotism and "Old Glory."

I had to compete in the past for low to medium pay, in acquiring employment against Mexicans that couldn't read, write, or speak English, to do hard manual labor - in fact I helped a couple fill out their job applications. Every time I lost out to Mexicans seeking work. At that time it was not an "American problem" only my problem (and others like me). I don't blame legal or illegal Mexican workers seeking to earn money where ever they can. Across the world from Asia, to Africa, in Europe, the U.S. or Brazil it's the wealthy and college educated who use emotional persuasion to manipulate the "working man." I'm not going to bother or persecute some poor Joe earning his paying in some low paying job - and I'm not jumping on any more U.S. Crusades.

I'm confident the U.S. accepts more immigrants in than any nation on earth. Perhaps that is her virtue, I don't know? But I do know the U.S. absorbs large numbers of immigrants in when it has a demand for low paid workers. This is why she absorbs in so many Mexicans like the Irish, Italian, and Chinese before her, so they can drive down wages against the working native U.S. man and woman. It is a technique of those that own the means of production in the U.S. use.

I can't speak on Brazil's historical patterns and racial relations as it entails absorbing in immigrants, this is something I know little about. Perhaps Brazil's social patterns in this regard have been worse historically and the Italian, Lebanese, and Japanese immigrants to Brazil were subject to racial antagonisms or outright discrimination like the immigrants in the U.S. historically where and are. Perhaps in Brazil they hung signs in the windows of businesses against the Lebanese and Japanese like they did in the U.S. against the Irish saying "No dogs and Irish allowed." I don't know. What I do know is every big wave of immigrants into the U.S. always receive outbursts as to how they are destroying the country and so forth.

I don't think the issue is really about illegal immigrants as 99% of illegal immigrants are not taking away high pay college jobs or IT jobs. Most of them hide out toiling sweeping or mopping some floor. A good number of them take away decent lower or medium paying blue collar jobs in foundries and construction jobs from non-college educated blue collar workers native to the United States - a particular segment of the society the college educated really have no concern for or any feelings of association with. I think this issue is really about immigrants period and the sense that they are or may upset the status quo.

That's my opinion.

Well E, you should take a look at the numerous studies that have been done over the last 5 years concerning the effects that this massive population of illegals has had on U.S. society. They weigh in all the factors, positive as well as negative, and it doesn't even come close, illegals impose a huge detriment to the U.S. when all is hashed out. They're not only taking jobs away from americans, but they also take away vacancies in schools, beds in hospitals as well as food and beds from the homeless in shelters. The U.S., as you have mentioned, has always taken millions of immigrants, on a yearly basis, but when any country has an estimated 12-20 million illegals, for the love of god, that's larger than the population of many countries.

I think your opinion that this is about immigration and not illegal immigration couldn't be more incorrect, as history has shown, and continues to show, the U.S. is one of the most immigrant friendly countries on earth. But when you start having hundreds of thousands coming illegally every month, many bringing drugs, many even dying either from the rugged crossing, or dealing with the organized crime involved in smuggling them in, and also everything else I mentioned above concerning the problems they are causing with our social services, public schools and hospitals, enough is enough.

Then you get them protesting in the streets last year, burning flags, changing the words to the national anthem, waving the mexican flag, just what kind of reaction would one think that will bring?

and here's a real good NGO that doesn't have an axe to grind, they've done many legitimate studies and also take into consideration many other studies done by other NGO's.

I don't know about it either. I never heard of any movement against immigration in Brazil. My impression is that people here just don't care.

immigration, and certainly illegal immigration isn't a problem in brazil. Afterall, why would someone want to come illegally to brazil? To make 350 reias per month? And that's the legal minimum wage, so naturally an illegal wouldn't even be paid that.

In Brazil's history they've had to "entice" immigration, not the contrary.

Ask that some bolivians why did they decide to come to Brazil illegaly.

In Brazil's history they've had to "entice" immigration, not the contrary.

You are mistaken. Nobody leaves their homes because of nothing, and so the people that came from other regions of the world left their homes because of poverty, persecution, war, etc. Brazil always received a great influx of immigrants because of that, people were simply searching for better opportunities, no need to "entice" anything.

Either the europeans, or asians, or anybody else that came here were dirty poor. They weren't business people "enticed" to come here for some interesting deal.

BTW, first you curse immigrants as the cause of all your problems then you use the sad fact of millions of people crossing the desert and being exploited in semi-slave work as something to be proud of.

Your phrase "dirty poor" reminds me of a movie we saw the other day. The actor said he was a "dirt farmer". The subtitle came out, "fazendeiro sujo".

When I was a kid in Anaheim I remember that they had to put in a water line and the contractor was discussing whether they should dig the trench with a machine or hire a crew of Uetbax. I had no idea what that meant until the Bracero program came into existence.......

Bo is simply an idiot, you see immigrants in Brazil a lot of times. It's not unusual to find chinese and korean immigrants that opened some sort of shop here. Yes, chinese, the ones from the prosper China whose butt is licked by americans so voraciously.

Using the same logic as you do, if there are chineses in here then it means it's not as good as the media says over there, is it?

Um, the Chinese don´t like to be called chineses or chinamen. They prefer to be called Chinese. The word is both singular and plural. Like Poor, and Homeless. Drop the urge to add an "s".

lol....man you love to put words in peoples mouths. And just when I was seeing some posts from you that I was shocked by, as you didn't lie, twist others words, etc, and actually made some statements that had some basis to them.

I never said immigrants were the cause to ALL our problems now did I?? But they are the cause of several problems in regards to social services, education, healthcare, welfare, etc. My point about illegals entering the country by coyote is that it is very dangerous, people being raped, robbed, and killed by mexican smuggling rings is not uncommon.

And about brazilian immigration, yeah, they're beating down the doors for the 3rd lowest minimum salary on planet earth!
