Brazilian Lessons on Absurdity and Selfishness PDF Print E-mail

Brazilian students protest in capital Brasília As surprising as it may seem, the U.S. does not hold a monopoly on morons. Recent events in Brazil offered two good examples of this. First, in Brasília, students gathered and protested outside of Congress, as new members were sworn in, splashing police with water from the reflecting pool in front of the building and leading to six arrests.

What were they protesting, one could wonder? Perhaps they were angry over last year's congressional vote to raise their own incomes to 24,000 reais (US$ 11,370) a month even though many of those congresspeople no longer are employed there? Or perhaps there was some university funding being cut by Congress?

Nope. They were simply protesting because Congress was there. This is so patently absurd on so many levels. First, as one who studies student movements, I have a fair amount of disdain for the "Protest without a purpose."

There are so many injustices out there - you could at least try to pick one to be the reason for your gathering. Secondly, perhaps these students need a little history lesson. In part, they should be THANKFUL that POPULAR ELECTED congresspeople were sworn in.

After all, from 1964 to 1985, there was this little thing in Brazil called "military dictatorship," led by a government that stuffed the Congress with its supporters and even reserved (and exercised) the right to close Congress between 1968 and 1979.

If the existence of Congress is so upsetting to these students and since they had no other motivation, it's unclear what other reason they were there, then perhaps they'd like a return to those halcyon days.

Then, just to make things even better in the country, here in Rio a court ruled in favor of the citizens in a class action suit. These citizens had sued the company of the Metro here in Rio, which had increased the price of subway tickets, claiming it was operating on a deficit.

These citizens had sued, claiming in a remarkably self-centered argument that the hike was unfair. The Metro allows the elderly to ride for free, as do non-college students on days/times when they are going to/from school.

The citizens in the lawsuit claimed, in true nihilism and narcissism, that the increase should be removed, and the elderly and the unemployed students should have to pay their way. The court agreed.

What was this egregious pay raise that had rustled the feathers of so many? 10 BRAZILIAN CENTS. That's right - on January 2, the subway went from 2.30 reais (US$ 1.09) to 2.40 reais (US$ 1,14), and these citizens demanded a return to the 2.30 price, and they got it.

What for? So that the elderly and the unemployed students now face the prospect of paying for their own tickets. And what is the likelihood that these people in the lawsuit one day turn old? But of course, they don't consider that.

This is so horribly offensive because it does nothing to save money, but plenty to nail those who are less advantaged. Not only that, but it is indefensible. My girlfriend, strictly playing devil's advocate, had pointed out that 10 cents per one-way ticket was a total savings of one real a week, and 4 reais a month, which is enough to buy some essential foodstuffs like rice or veggies.

This would be a fine argument, except that if the people REALLY want to save, they would ride the public buses, which are safe and which operate at 20-40 cents cheaper than the subway.

Thus, I highly doubt savings are their real concern - if it were, they could ride the bus and save 16 reais a month, instead of four. Rather, they are driven by the "injustice" of paying an extra ten cents a trip, and thus are willing to totally screw over their fellow comrades in society. Unbe-fricking-lievable.

That Didn't Take Long...

My girlfriend says somebody is ALWAYS striking in Brazil, an adage I can attest to. The last time I was here, all the museum workers were on strike, thus preventing me from seeing the creepy Getúlio Vargas museum, a former dictator AND popularly elected president (in that order) of Brazil where you can not only see the room where he killed himself, but also the smoking jacket he was wearing when he put a bullet in his heart...).

This time, it took all of 4 days for a strike to occur. However, it's one that may be a little harder to approve of in the hierarchy-of-just-causes. As of yesterday, many bankers though not all, and I can't figure out the rhyme or reason, went on strike.

I'm all for worker's rights, and like the notion that lesser-paid bankers are sticking it to corporate bank owners. Who knows how long this strike will last (some strikes are over in a few days here - others, such as the museum workers strike of 2005, last months). All I know is, to quote Eric Idle...

"It sure will make chartered accountancy more interesting."

There's a general anti-congress sentiment given the many scandals involving congressmen in the last three years and the obscene raise they wanted to give themselves. That doesn't justify the stupidity, but it does tell that some think that democracy doesn't work.

As for the strikes, yes, that's right, they last days. But it happen mostly with public workers and workers of private companies that are monopolies, like the subways companies. They do it because they can. In most of the private sector this is not a possibility because of the competition, people are too worried about losing their jobs.

Public workers can't be fired in Brazil. Once you get in you have a job for life.

There is a lot to protest about in Brazil and personally I believe there is not enough protest. The pendulum of labor law in Brazil may have swung too far in favour of the employees but it was necessary that some shift take place. Strikes are a problem, but to think this is a purely Brazilian problem is absurd. The reference to US is no less absurd, Americans do not protest enough either. To be a 'super power' does not require intelligence, it required aggression and gullibility.

The article is shallow and stupid. Mr Trend could be a high school student. "The US does not hold a monpoly on morons" is the opening sentence and is a moromic statement in itself.

American Eagle, its pretty funny to see "the sole Superpower" getting there asses kicked on a daily basis by a motivated, 3 world enemy in Iraq. 0 for 3 in the last 3 wars...quite the "super power"...what a Redneck.

As a Brazilian this could be an emotional response, but, it is not indeed. Mister Trendy always tries to undermine Brazil and Brazilians' rep**ation: that's purely emotional; he might have had a pretty Brazilian girlfriend who had a liason with another Brazilian man or it's just a coordenated action from some type of organization which will have some gain with his actions. It's sad.
But you should know that your warfare against us won't sustain because we Brazilians are a very proud people with a huge capacity to fight any adversity with ingeniosity, our mainly European heritage, been it ethnic or cultural and diplomatic is European and not African or Amerindian as one might suppose: we differ from Americans only on geographic location, nothing else. American people is not a good example for anybody, the United States with its highly corporate/media controled population has the most controled system of the world. Let's stop here.

My response is to American Eagle,

I'm from Canada, and I can tell you that even with all the negative incidents going on in Brazil, I would much rather visit that beautiful country. Most people that I met while on vacation were delightful, cultured and caring. What I can also say is that the US doesn't have a clue about their northern neighbour because your country has arrogance beyond any other country in the world ! The US has put the world in such a state of unrest, that our world will never be the same. And may I say that your arrogant statement of being the worlds' only superpower will not hold true for much longer. You guys are going broke over the war you created unlawfully in Iraq . So eat your french fries and pies, and be proud of holding the title of world " Supersize Me ". I feel sorry for you. Long live Brazil !!!

A new dark age is coming, and what Brazil offers is not so much the vast area and the rain forest but a huge country with no former vassal states in the Islamic world and therefore no Muslim immigrants with an automatic visa. As Europe goes, and Canada, which has 2.5% Muslim up over 25% in the last five years, people who can flee the new Ottoman Empire will be looking this way and to the states. It is precisely what Canadians and Europeans hate so much about the US that will enable the Americans to resist. All the words meant in a negative sense such as redneck, cowboy, shoot from the hip, politically incorrect, and gun happy, only show the difference between Americans who will rise up and do something from the wusses in the EU and Maple Leaf land.

First...American Eagle is an example of the American moron that the author pointed out in his article, I am from the US too and apoligize for his ignorance and stupidity, he is the type that gives us all a bad name.

First, we will never go broke no matter how much we spend on the war, that is an uneducated statement and not well thought out, the US has enjoyed an extremley strong economy in spite of the war, which I too believe we should not be fighting and will continue to do so, it will take much more than a war to hurt our economy.

Second, did you not realize that Canadians and Americans are fighting side by side in the war against Iraq and in Afganistan, you know what they say about people in glass houses.

Third, Your Prime Minister just two days ago criticized the new Democratic congress for a resolution that would support a complete withdrwal from Iraq.

Fourth, I travel to BC often and there are more than a few McDonalds on the streets of Vancover and every other large Candian city.

Finally, I am a huge Colordo Avalance fan and I must thank Canada for Patrick Roy.

that's a typical "red headed step-child" response. We hear you and we understand. It's tough not getting any recognition and having the toughest, smartest, kid on the block living right next door. Leads to feelings of inferiority. As for the strikes, yes, that's right, they last days.

And those days turn into months! The last bank strike in Bahia and most of the north/northeast of brazil lasted 5 weeks. I know, I had money sent from outside brazil and fought to get it liquidated for more than 3 weeks, it was absurd and is absurd that a government can allow banks, such as banco do brasil, which is an agent of banco central, or Caixa, which is a government controlled bank, to go on strike. Absolutely absurd! And I know more than a few people that refuse to invest in brazil specifically because of absurdities such as this are allowed to exist.....and I can't say that I blame them.

Second, you better check your information on how much debt your country has at present, and how much it's costing the US daily to finance the war in Iraq. It's staggering ! Perhaps those billions of dollars could be used to help all the homeless on the streets of your large cities, or the victims of Katrina ( that they kind of let down wouldn't you say ?? )

I would like to point out that I too support our military, but not the war in Iraq. Your government tried to justify the Iraq war on false information . Your government has destroyed it's trust with even it's allies.

I did not vote for our present Prime Minister , for various reasons, one being his support for the war in Iraq. Afghanistan is a different story. Canada is trying to rebuild a nation, not destroy one like the US is in Iraq. The US has created a country in Iraq that is now rated as the worst country in the world to live in. Congratulations ! You must be proud of that right ? Where will your conscience be when your new upcoming president pulls your military out of Iraq. Who will apologize to the thousands of Iraqis who lost family members in this conflict ?

The epitomy of an ignorant person. Do you really think that the U.S would spend literally tens and tens of TRILLIONS of dollars on weapons, and not have the means to use them??

The U.S. was ass-high in debt during the Clinton Administration, not only did he pull us out of it, but we had the biggest surplus in our history. That kind of thing happens when you account for one-third of the WORLD's GNP.
Democracy doesn't work?
written by David Joanisse, February 15, 2007
Maybe democracy doesn't work in Brazil, but Brazilians have found during their history that having emperors (like Dom Pedro I and II) and military dictators (like Getulio Vargas) doesn't work either. Unlike the US, however, they have been able to successfully impeach a sitting president, Francisco Mellor de Collor, for being corrupt within recent memory. That doesn't happen in the US, though everybody knows that George W. Bush is emperor in all but name, and thinks he can do whatever he wants. Okay, so people in Brazil can make the evening news by protesting for "frivolous" reasons. Here, in the US, protestors rarely make the news for any reason, because there's a de facto news blackout on protests. So I guess I'm not really qualified to say, as someone living in the United States, whether or not democracy really works, because the United States government is trying to kill it, and the people here are letting the government do it.

You are judging all American's by the actions of an incompetent and tratiorous administration, they took our country to an illegal war lying about weapons of mass destruction and Al Queda in Iraq, I would support impeachment. And, I am going to have to admit, I voted for Bush the first time, Ralph Nader the second.

Our international credibility has been permanantly damaged and we lack a strong potential leader on the horizon, it is indeed dark days. But your anger is directed at me...OK, if that makes you feel better, I can be the a*****e American for you. But it's people like me, the vast majority now, that will put us back on the right track, if that is possible. The damage Bush has done could be irreversible. The American people have had enough of being lied to and manipulated. Our challenge now is to disengage from a lost war and still leave the pieces in place to protect ourselves and the Iraquis, who are the biggest victins from those that would do us harm, which are many more now do to Bush and his criminal administration. What do you want from "concerned" American? An apology?
? OK I apoligize for f**king up the war.

As for the American Beagle...have you served? Have you put your life on the line for an illegal war that you support. You should enlist today if you have the balls. It's so easy to blindly follow incompetence, because you don't have to think for yourself, it is much easier than doing your own thinking. But if you really took the time to THINKhow we got to this point, you to would feel as betrayed as the 70% of Americans who no longer support the Bush docterine.

Bo, you are a hate filled chap aren't you? Where does that come from? You seem like a smart guy, do you really think we should have invaded a soverign country just to remove a few old artillery shells that contained chemical weapons? Perhaps my head is in my ass, but I am not proud of how we have conducted the war, tortured prisoners, not provided our troops with the equipment necessary to protect themselves...and I served 10 years as an enlisted Army infantryman, a Desert Storm 1 vet.

By the way, this is a Brazilian blog about Brazilian issues. I have one other question Bo, I can only check the Blog once a day or so. How do you stay on 24 hours 7 days? Perhaps, there is more to you than meets the eye, perhaps you are associated with the BRAZZIL, website and keep up your rant to your advantage...I hope you enjoy San Diego, it is my home town.

No. I simply stated facts, such as just why the U.S. gov't. was so damn sure that Iraq had WMD, they know they had them, at least chemical weapons, and that's because we have the receipts! We sold them to them during the Iraq/Iran war.

buddy, if you look at the times that I respond, its early in the morning, when I wake up, here, in BRAZIL. As I mentioned in another thread, I'll be happy to throw a cell number up here for ya, if you have the gumption to ring it.

You can believe this, I have NOTHING to do with this site. But I do find it hilarious how some here try and paint the problems here in brazil as something "american". I have an interest, financial and otherwise, in seeing this country (brazil) improve and it sure as s**t isn't going to get any better with these ignorant, reality denying, chest pounding, flag waving, "não foi eu" brazilians that refuse to accept responsibilty for anything.

I did not read all comments because it is a total waste of time. Nor the article per se, another waste of time.

"If the existence of Congress is so upsetting to these students and since they had no other motivation, it's unclear what other reason they were there, then perhaps they'd like a return to those halcyon days."

So "Mr Trend", you think you are capable of saying what the Brazilian students should protest about and what they shouldn't? OOH, keep quiet I suggest so you won't come with stupid comments like this smilies/wink.gif

The freaking American morons here live to repeat that all Brazilians voted for the bad politicians who are elected. When these morons see that not all Brazilians are uneducated and are not interested in mediocre results the same stratospheric morons criticized them. They, the American morons who write here, want to make believe, by repeating continuously, that Brazil and its ppl are not an important country and that "the world" (e.g. the USA, of course) does not care about Brazil.

These freaks do not want to recognize what their Government did along the whole last century to Latin America. So they stick into their subconsciouss these particular facts: America wants Brazil to remains a third world economy, along with the rest of the world...

BTW, Mr Buscha is coming to visit and discuss matters in Brazil in March, as welll as Conda Rice. Puff, more to stick to your subconsciouss...... Think when the whole thing in it blows out.

Well, B. Mesmo, you get the "Used the Term, Moron" prize. It would help you read and understand the article.

Al Capp, the cartoonist, drew a group of protesters years ago, the S.W.I. N. E.: Students Wildly Indignant about Nearly Everything.

Here it Brazil, the protesters used to yell about a civilian, not military, president. So they got one. But they still didn´t like the status quo, so next it was, Diretas Agora!, they wanted an elected civilian president, not an appointed one. So they got one popularly elected, sort of, and then it was something else. They just enjoy being out there protesting.

The people are still enjoying being able to strike and protest. Let ém work off steam, it´s good anger managemnent.

However, couldn´t agree with you more when you say, ..."Think when the whole thing in it blows out.". Deep. If that´s original with you, kudos.....

Why are 3 millions leaving the Brazilian "paradise", preferring to go in USA/EU "hell ????
Why Brazilians are ready to pay to be smuggled illegally to "hell" ??????

And why do the movement of people is not similar.....the opposite way ?????

Answering these basic 3 questions will determine who is closer to paradise and closer to hell !!!!!

Also why are many more millions of Brazilians dreaming of....leaving the country ?
And why chose USA or EU......and not China, India and Africa where the real future lies......apparently ?????????

Quite laughable.....the brazilian (UN)common sense !!!!!

Without approaching his uninteresting persona, I want to point out that whenever someone criticizes US with well-known data all he can do is say that Brazil is a hellhole. What a joke mister...

That's the pot calling the kettle black my friend. That's all people do on this site, pull horses**t stats about the U.S. out of their bundas. Yet when I, as well as numerous other posters post legitimate stats from the U.N. or the brazilian gov't. itself we then hear rhetoric about how the stats aren't "valid". Please, throw all the stats about the U.S. you want up in here, if they're valid, I'll be the first to agree. And, e harmony, you can start posting using your name already.

My take is that it is patriotic to be AGAINST the war, you are in the small majority, 70% of Americans are now against the war, Bush's approval ratings are in the low 30's, so you my kool aide drinking friend are the mental midget minority. People of intellect can actually understand the crap that Bush has put us through and understand the position he has put us in...no win, more death and destruction, global embarresment. Actually I served 6 months in the desert, Desert Shield and Desert Storm, my unit, the 5th Battalion, 16h Infantry, 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One), was the first unit across the Euphrates River and engaged the Iraq Republican Guard, under helecopter gunship support from the 101st Airborne...USA #1...tell me again where you served?...On your couch watching FOX News and eating Wings scratching your balls? You would s**t your pants the first time you heard a 105 fire in anger, tremble like a little baby. I know what it is like to be a soldier, you have no say if you havn't walked the walk, you sniveling coward. Over 3.000 Americans have lost their lives, countless more have lost limbs, and you have the balls to tell someone you support the military? This is a lost cause, those broken familes and bodies will have served for a lie, that is a true and simple fact, you can choose to turn a blind eye if you wish, most Americans are now wise to this fact.

As for my illegal alien friends, sure, I have some, my wife is from Brazil, many of our friends are illegal, so what?...What's that make me? Your rant makes you a bigot, pure and simple, filled with hate and ignornace. I don't understand why people like you and the others frequent this site, only to tell Brazilians they are less than American's, is it your own insecurity and impotence? Does it make you feel like THE man? Are you impotent? What is your motivation? Did a Brazilian kick you ass? Steal your money...or more liley your girlfriend. It may be difficult for you to comprehend, how someone can be a proud patriotic American and still be against the war, our failure to stop the war, address global pollution or help the poor and most of all tell the truth about a President who might be guilty of war crimes at the most, horribly incompetent at the least is now inexcusable.

I know, it took me a while too, I voted for him the first time. But use logic man, think, read, understand what has happened and then ADMIT to the damage this so called Christian has done to our military, our image and our country. I was OK with watching Sadam swing, I would be just as happy seeing Bush impeached.

......logical common sense would/should dictate.....that you should not be ready to pay many dollars to reside illegally
in a country that you dont like at all.......IN MY VIEW !!!!!!

In that sense, Brazilians are either idiots and/or are liars !

And in my view......Brazilians are idiots AND liars !

Better yet : when a U.S. or EU citizen goes to work in another country, he does it first LEGALLY, and secondly will have mostly a LEFAL high managerial job.
But Brazilians do it ILLEGALLY and obtain ILLEGAL low paying jobs due to their lack of good education and non skills !!!!!

In my view....NOTHING to be proud of.....in who you are, in what you do illegally.....and in your total (IN)competence !!!!!

And those with some education, should better stay in Brazil. You will have a good job, a good salary but in a bad environment anyway !!!!!!

Yesss stay in your country and let the other countries chose their guests and dont try to impose yourselves where you are not welcomed or invited anyway !
Does Brazil allow ILLEGAL FOREIGN workers by the millions and millions ? NOOOOO !
Therefore why your brain understands and agree in ONE WAY ONLY ?????

Do Brazilians have HALF a brain or NO brain at all ?????

In my view....a few of you have half a brain, and most have NO brain at all !!!!!

Your nasty Bo, plan and simple, everyone that posts is an idiot, a moron a bigot or a racist. Your only motivation is to dial up the hate and anger, your arguments while sometimes well thought out are posted to ignite and inflame the worst in people. My guess is that there are several Bo's, all posting on behalf of BRAZZIL, to promote there right wing agenda for Brazil. I will admit something though...you are damn good at it! No way you can keep posting 24/7 without food or sleep...but your always there, just when the flame dies, you throw gas on it...you are no longer to be taken seriously.

Born and rasied my friend, sunny San Diego, now in Miami. I did do a 2 year tour of duty in Rio, lived in Ipanema, corner of Joanna Angelica and Baron de Torre, best 5 square miles on the face of the earth. Took Portuguese lessons too...you should have seen my professora, Lucy, ella e muito quench! Sorry, obviously, while I can speak enough to get around, not good enough to write. I did a project for an American company that manufactures lab equipment, third party manufacturing deal with a Brazilian company called Nova Etica, near Sao Paulo, they build great stuff, not like that Chinese junk.

I had my oldest kid at the American School (man talk about drugs in school, that place was worse than any US high school). I sent my youngest to a very good Brazilian private school, he speaks great Portuguese, freaks the Brazilians here in Florida out...9 year old gringo kid who can falla todo.

While I admire your tenacity and your ability to live in Brazil and maintain your US patriotic bearing, I don't think over all that America's, gringos that is do very well in Brazil. African American's on the other hand really seem to grab the culture. White American's were typically tourists scared s**tless to step out of their hotel rooms. Europeans and Canadians seem less intimidated and you will find them in Lapa or Santa Theresa, or other areas an American would never go. You know how it goes...after being in the neighborhood a while I got to know all the good bars and cafes, never a problem getting a table, everyone knew and took care of me. We did our shopping at the open market every Friday, everyone knew I was a Gringo but I did not have one problem, might have something to do with my beautiful Brazilian wife of 15 years. Paid our empregada 5 times the minimum wage, took care of dental work for all her kids, we miss her, my youngest still thinks she is his Aunt, we call HER (not you), a couple times a month to make sure everything is OK.

Brazil has it's problems, way to many to count, but there were many things I admire about Brazil and Brazilians, yeah, I hated giving 5 reals to the traffic cop to park my car next to my house, but over all my expereince was good. Brazilians are extremley family focused and kid friendly, I would say much more so than Americans who talk family values. Because of my wife, my ill mother in law lives with us, an American familiy would have her in an extended care facility in a diaper, what kind of family values is that?

It's easy to be critical of Brazil, you can not compare apples to oranges, I do find your situation interesting, you are a American / Brazilian who holds dual citizenship, my kids do as well. You chose to live in Brazil, but you also choose to trash Brazil at every opportunity. Actually, I do envy you a bit, I would have liked to have stayed a little longer, but alas, kids, school and work are eventually realites, but going to the beach every day and kicking it with my Brazilian friends who got me so drunk one night I now have a tatoo that says "Amerioca" was an incredible experience. I travel back often, sometimes on business to the interior of Sao Paulo which is beautiful and for pleasure, but now skip Rio in favor of the beaches of the North & South. My next big adventure is a week of fishing up river from Manuas, I will be taking a number of clients, they think they will have to dodge pygmies and headhunters...one guy even started to take some "Spanish".

Yes, I am an American, but I have a warm heart for Brazil and the people that live there. We are also connected to the Brazilian community here in Miami and I must tell you, if it's a choice between a party with my white friends...or a party with my Brazilian friends...I am at the churassco everytime.

Abracos.

that's fine GTY, you're the one that started talking s**t. I gave you a way to at least prove that I'm not in the U.S., I'm in brazil, and have been for close to ten years.

And, if you would have read carefully you would see that I am NOT a dual citizen, I am an AMERICAN, with a permament brazilian visa, which I originally obtained because I married a brazilian, then had a child, she is the dual citizen, and since my english partners and myself have made/are making a foreign investment in brazil.

It's interesting that you comment that I "trash" brazil. I don't think I do. If you notice on this site, which is about BRAZIL by the way, whenever there is an article about a situation in brazil, of crime, corruption, poverty, etc, etc. Articles that don't hold brazil up as some fantastic, tropical paradise in the sun with bronzed, large-assed beautiful women running half naked around everywhere, you'll find, without exception, several things. First you'll find those that "deny" these realities even exist. I would say that these people were placed on this website just to get reactions, but in my experience here in brazil there are definitely large percentages of brazilians that have the exact same attitude. They DENY actual realities, because they're not flattering realities. Or you have the type that points his finger. NOTHING is ever their fault. It's the U.S., the E.U., or the way brazil was settled 500 years ago by the portuguese. This goes hand in hand with the first type of poster, the "denier". So you get what you have here in numerous threads, go through them, take a look at the thread about violence in Rio, you'll see some idiot continues to post "stories" that have occurred in the U.S....."so and so was murdered in pittsburgh, blah, blah, blah". And they try and say, "hey, you have murder in the U.S. too, so Rio is just like the U.S."

I'm sure you get my drift.

My problem GTY is that I'm here, in brazil, and although yearning to go back to the U.S. and only visit brazil "when I can or desire", I simply can't, at least for the time being, we have too much invested here, also my child, her mother and myself are divorced. So, I have an interest in seeing brazil better itself, from a financial standpoint as well as personal. There are MANY things that I like about brazil, but unfortunately, there are MANY problems, the problems that come along with a third world country that has uneducated masses. You were in Rio, although very violent, one of the most "advanced" places in brazil. Quite different from the northeast where I am.

So my point in all this is this, how does a people better their environment, economy, security, healthcare, education, transparency in gov't, etc, etc, etc, the things that make a place have a good "quality of life", when you have so-called "educated" people that have the above attitudes?? The answer is you can, but it will be S-L-O-W, and much slower than it has to be, because you're fighting these people with mindsets like I described. The violence in Rio, any idiot knows, there is hardly a place on planet earth, definitely not a place that is NOT at war, that is as violent as Rio, and the last several months have been particularly bad, even by Rio standards. Yet you'll see people try and justify this, try to make it appear as if it's normal.

I've been here a while, study these people, inquire, question, etc. While there are some that fully recongnize the reality at hand here in brazil, the FIRST thing that needs to be changed is the perceptions and ideologies that many hold.

Why is it that gringos always use their GIRLFRIENDS as authorities on Brazilian society and culture?

Can't they read books? I mean, there are a lot of people who have spent years studying Brazil and writing about it and are alot more qualified to talk about it's problems than some 22 year old beach-bunny who's biggest skill is probably sucking gringo c**k.

Folks don't go to France and talk about their girlfriend's deep insights into the culture. Nor do they do the same in Italy, Russia, England, etc. etc. But get a gringo writing about Brazil and his authority of choice for social insight is either a girlfriens, a wife, or a taxidriver.

What are you trying to tell us, Mister Trend? That you're opinions regarding Brazil should be taken as informed because you manage to engage in pillow talk with your pick-ups from Help?

When the gringoes wives get together what they mainly talk about is maids. What she broke, what she wore, why Brazilian maids have to throw buckets of water on the floor or they don´t feel good about themselves, signing her carteira, etc.

For fun try to find out where the next quebra-quebra is going to take place, where the jilted, non-Tammy Wynette wife throws the mistress´s tv and stuff out into the street. If someone could book those events along with retomada de posse, they could make a lot of money.

Maybe the girlfriend has a better take on the street scene that the actual gringo does. Let´s hear from the Beach Bunnies. Just don´t say it like an Asian would.

Well put. Denial does seem to be a common brazilian trait especially when it comes to the the unfortunate realities of their beloved country. I love Brazil but even I as a tourist can see the underlying racism, poverty, violence and general apathy that's made places like Rio de janeiro such a non-destination for anyone that values such things as equality, human rights, security and just being able to walk home after midnight without some thug slicing your wrist off for your watch or silver bracelet. It's dissapointing to realize that most of this will not change precisely because of the denial.

We like to stay at the Novo Mundo in Flamengo, next to where Getulio lived. What a shock on TV to see troops gathered on the nearby grassy medians, we recognized the area, trying to keep the peace. Like a war zone or a scene from the past in Latin American countries that used to host "Coup of the Month" reality shows.
