Brazil's Mônica Gang Joins Disney to Win the World PDF Print E-mail
2007 - February 2007

Monica's Gang: An Adventure in Time, a Brazilian movie for childrenIn the gloom of the cinema, 200 children find their seats and enjoy free popcorn. The film is about to start. To most of them, going to the cinema is a great novelty. During the 80 minutes of film Turma da Mônica: Uma Aventura no Tempo (Mônica's Gang: An Adventure in Time), the kids laugh, whisper and have fun.

At the end, there is great applause for the new Mônica's Gang movie. "I loved the huge screen, it is very different from seeing a movie at home," says an enthusiastic David Alves da Silva, aged 10.

Another detail that David loved was seeing the creator of Mônica's Gang, Maurício de Sousa, up close. The cartoonist talked to the children before the session. "If I had known he was coming, I would have brought my comics for him to autograph," said the boy.

The children are part of the Nossa Senhora do Bom Parto Social Center, which counts on 56 units in the eastern area of the city of São Paulo. The children participate in extracurricular activities that go from artistic workshops to sports activities and visits to museums in the city.

Also present were ten adolescents who participated in project "Tecer o Futuro" (Weaving the Future), a program developed by the Social Center aimed at collecting information about youths who have been infected by the HIV virus.

The first experience of these children in the movies on Thursday, February 15, was possible thanks to a partnership between Maurício de Sousa Produções and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which supports the Social Center, and the Cinemark chain of movie theaters.

"It is always good to bring these children to the cinema, simply for the fact that they are given the experience. And who knows if they may be inspired by it and become cartoonists, screenplay writers or something in the area," stated Sousa.

The new Mônica's Gang movie was made specially for the cinema, after a decade of films made for television and DVD. Apart from that, the production establishes the first partnership between Maurício de Sousa Produções and Buena Vista International, the distributing arm of Disney. The idea is to launch it in Latin America in the near future.

While promoting Mônica's Gang: An Adventure in Time, Maurício de Sousa is already working on a new film. This time, the main character will be dinosaur Horácio. "It will be done in computer graphics and will also be for the cinema. It should be ready in two years," he adds.

Worldwide

The characters developed by Maurício de Sousa have already reached the world. Today, his various products arrive in around 30 countries. In the Arab countries, cartoon strips with character Ronaldinho Gaúcho are printed in local papers.

But if it depends on Maurício de Sousa, the whole of his gang should be there in the future. In an interview three years ago, the cartoonist had already expressed his desire of publishing the stories in Arabic.

In Europe, the Gang's products have already arrived in Portugal, France, Greece and Spain. In the latter case, there is a special line of Ronaldinho Gaúcho character products, as the player is one of the stars of football team Barcelona. In Italy, television channel RAI has been exhibiting the cartoon since 2004.

The first characters developed by Maurício de Sousa were Franklin and his dog Blu, in 1959. But it was in 1970, when he created character Mônica, that the Gang grew and became famous all over Brazil. "They are now national heritage," says the father of the Gang, with no exaggeration.

In Brazil, his creations have already become dolls, games and even amusement parks. There are over 3,000 products inspired on his characters. Today, 150 artists work with the cartoonist in the production of his stories.

Brazil is a Sexist Hellhole!
written by Abriu, February 19, 2007
and so is most of Latin America! They have "machismo" which means they can have a concubine or see a prostitute before they get married but their wives have to be virgins. And after they're married they ROUTINELY cheat on their wives. They only see women as virgins and whores or mothers and whores. Get this: if a woman cheats on her husband she stands the chance of getting MURDERED in the name of macho honor. And that is not uncommon! And they usually get away with it! When are Latin American women gonna have some f**king DIGNITY and find other men? I would sooner be a lesbian that marry a latino. No wonder those women try to ride the first gringo ass OUT of that toilet! My favorite part of the machismo is that part of this rigid code is that they can't seem worried about getting AIDS. I swear to you, it's part of the custom that they have to be unafraid of AIDS.

In Latin America they think guys have uncontrollable sexual urges. That's why if a guy has AIDS instead of teaching him about protection or abstinence, they'll quarantine him in a sanitorium!! Their arrogant asses deserve that s**t!! And that's also why the place is so unbelievably homophobic. They think gay guys all want to molest their precious little gauchos. I am A-OK in the US of A! Where women can actually feel like human beings!
Neglected to mention

that they feel they're "above" doing housework. They're so charming I'm swooning just thinking about it. I see exactly what latinas see in these short, poor, racist, violent drunkards.

feminist su*** what the hell are you writting on a article on cartoon characters?

anyway I´m Brazilian and I don`t know what the hell you are talking about... where the hell have you been?

Brazil has a severe problem with income equalty, so there´s no wonder that Gringoes are seen as an option to get a better life.
Don`t illude yourself thinking that Gringoes are seen as white knights or gentlemen smilies/grin.gif a bag of money is a better description.
Fools !
written by Old one, February 19, 2007
These Brasilians are fools. They dont understand that they will fail in whatever they do. Atleast they should realise it, after visiting this site, and reading the comments posted by ch.c. ( Earlier in this post : Similar animal is Abriu)

God has sent ch.c for the Brasilians. Stupid Brasilians dont realise it.

All Brasilians should be made to visit Brazzilcom every hour. They should be slapped on their asses, and made to read what ch.c has written by each passing hour. (Women should be made naked, while reading ---right ch.c?) .

All those who dont do the needfull, should be sent to iraq to die.

Lula should order to combine all comments of ch.c and give it a form of a text book, and it should be included at all levels of education in Brasil. Thereafter wait.....keep visiting this site..for future advise from ch.c...... mercy..god has sent him to brasil...let no words of his go waste...

For people who dont know about the great ch.c : wait, soon he will appear from thin air, and contribute his golden words to this post. if not, then this post is worthless, people should then move on to other posts, where lord ch.c has blessed with his golden words !
Abriu: are you sure you're talking about Brasil?

I really don't know from where Abriu has taken this s**t she (he?) wrote. From her (his?) disturbed mind, I guess. It really pisses me off when I heard someone saying stupid things like that from Brasil. We have enough problems to deal with, but this "macho" bulls**t is pure nonsense. I know that most people in the USA thinks we live like monkeys in the jungle, waiting for carnaval and samba and mulatas to come dance in our lap. We have our myths too about the growth of stupidity in USA in this Bush's era. And I know that this is the beginning of the empire's decline and fall. So, Abriu, prepare for the years to come, when people like you will be very sorry of this kind of arrogance.
Abriu is an idiot

I think we can all agree with that. But Latin and South America as a whole have traditionaly been sexist countries. While things are changing, I think it is safe to say that Abriu has some accurate points, but he made them like an ignorant Westerner. Brazil is actually way ahead of other countries in the region. I have been doing business in Brazil for the last 10 years, in that time I have noticed a remarkable transition. Most of the new college graduates, especialy in the world of science are young women. If you are to visit the laboratories of the large multi-national pharma's in Brazil, you will notice that the scientists there are almost 75% female, of course the lab managers and directors are still men, so there is some ways to go, women are gaining ground. Also, women in Brazil are free to divorce and I can tell you on more than one occasion, it is the women in a realtionship who is stepping out. Women in Brazil continue to gain ground, Abriu's take is one of ignorance and perhaps his own wishful thinking.
Ive seen alot of changes in my area
written by Denis, February 20, 2007
I come from the state of Parana in brazil. Even though it is a mans world , alot has changed. Women are getting education and better paying jobs while the men are falling behind. For example my stepmother now earns double the salary my father earns for about 2 years now. She was the first female director/principal elected for the high school she currently runs today. The 18 female group are now heading off to college vs looking for husbands. Seen a few female judicial judges that was unheard of before. I cant speak for the whole country but as far as Parana its now alot different than it was years ago.

I think the idea of sexism in Brazil from americans is partly due to ignorance and partly due to puritanism. Ignorance because they aren't capable even of poiting in a map where Brazil is, not to mention to have any idea of what is going on there, and puritanism because they see half-naked woman on TV and claim that they are treated as "sexual objects", and so on. They are just applying their narrow mindsets to this country.

There's also the "patriotic" bias from americans, as we can see in many posts in here. The first comment was utterly pathetic in the sense that it provided no data whatsoever, it was (yet) another bigot spreading his hatred over something he has no clue about.

I doubt if 1% of Americans are Puritans.

I´m an American. Your post above has few adjectives and no disclaimers, so according to you I´m ignorant, a Puritan, geographically challenged, no idea of what´s going on, narrow mindset, patriotically biased, and some of my fellow Americans are pathetic bigots.

There may be other readers of this blog that agree with your basic premises, but you are a net liability to them because of your intemperance.

But you are coming along in some areas. For example, you yourself say ..."in Brazil from americans"...., using the term "americans" to refer to people from the USA. This shows progress, and merits a Gold Star.

written by doutornova, February 21, 2007
Ric, are you sure Americans are not puritans?

I mean, they let you buy weapons at the age of 18, but they don`t let you drink until you`re 21
Clinton having sex almost cost him his job, but Bush going to war got him reelected.

I don`t mean that all Americans are puritans, but there`s a large conservative portion of the country that is.
Ric's Right
written by GTY, February 21, 2007
Just because you are a conservative doesn't mean your a Puritan. While the country was founded on Puritan values a lot has happened in those 200 years. Our televsion, music and movies mimic Brazils and Europe's, sex sells and we market sex everywhere and as well as anyone, I am not saying if it's good or bad, but it works. There is sexism every where including the US, the reason why sexism is so visible in Brazil is that there are so many beautiful women. What amazes me is the way they take care of themselves, in particular the older women. I mean, any one can be beautiful at 20 or even 30, but Brazilian women are at their best in their 40's. Now the average American women has spent way to much time at McDonalds, I live in Florida and it really is pathetic to see the shape of young American women, especially vacationing from the mid-West. What is really interesting is the contrast you can see here, as these overweight American girls are on the same beaches as the Brazilian and other Latin girls...wow, what a difference!
...
written by Ric, February 22, 2007
I know what you are saying, I just was trying to keep the word Puritan tied to its historical meaning as a specific group of people with a specific philosophy. Maybe that´s impossible.
Don't play the fool
written by doesn't matter, March 10, 2007
You know what he is saying.calling north americans (they don't even have a name for their country) puritans is a pejorative way to call then conservative, sexually repressed. And that also has to do with the first coment in this article. That person really must be insane. People have to marriage to get sex? (!) And that's is why we have high divorce rates? (!!). I thing that person is talking about Tadjikistan or other nearby country...
