Waterfall in the Brazilian AmazonWealth and conflict are often found together. In the wealthy Amazonian region of Brazil, hundreds have died in fights related to land ownership as ranchers, speculators and timber companies often fight with local communities. The region is responsible for a higher proportion of assassinations than any other part of the country.

Let there be light
written by aes, March 05, 2007
It is not the cost of electricity that must be considered, but the cost of not implementing electricity. The inevitible crime, poverty, social misery, throughout the country as a consequence. Brazil must bring intelligence to all of Brazil, the old axiom that you have to spend money to make money. . .that in the 21st century there are vast areas in Brazil's potentially affluent north without electricity is manifest self destructiveness, it is self debilitating and effects the entirety of Brazil, its economy, and its perception by the global community. Brazil is the largest most powerful country in South America let it be 'a light onto the world'. . .there is another 'old saw', 'penny wise pound foolish'. . . invest in the infrastructure of the North as was done in the Tennessee Valley rural electric projects of the 1930's under Roosevelt. . .the time is NOW.
Today, diesel power generation in the Amazon continues to enjoy a higher subsidy level than any renewable source.

But the world was sure you swim.....in ethanol ! Have you not produced yet the ethanol gensets or are you waiting that others do it and then Brazil could proClaim with big fanfare
how they are technology AND ECO oriented. Yesssssss...the same as for your flex fuel engines. Is Brazil not telling the world it is their invention....WHEN IT WAS AND IS NOT ??????

AND will Lula, FOR ONCE, deliver on his many promises he made, such as 10 millions jobs during his first mandate, 400'000 MST settlements, 5 % economic growth rate, reduction in corruptions, reductions in crime rates, just to name a few examples ?

Yessssss....will he delivers his promises of LIGHT FOR ALL.....BY 2008, or was it a typing mistake that should have read 2080 ?????? Or simply another lie ?
Ohhhhhhh....and by the way.....

So much correct...that the Brazilian government published a free pamphlet of how to be a p**a !

No one remembers ?????

There was an article on that famous pamphlet in this site and many other places, a year ago or so !!!!!!!

Incredible...but true ! The pamphlet even suggested the manners to have when in contact with clients !

I suppose the government just wrote and suggested what they are accustomed to do....DAILY !!!!!
So Many Experts

We lived for fifteen years in one Amazon town. For the first five there was no electricity of any kind. For the second five there was electricity only from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at night from a diesel powered Scania genset, run by the town. The last five years we had lights from a major hydroelectric plant.

The crime increased with the availability of electrical power, not decreased. And some other areas of life quality were also better before electricity than after.
