The George W. Bush PR Show Comes to Brazil PDF Print E-mail
2007 - March 2007
Written by John Fitzpatrick

US President George W. Bush play ganzá in São Paulo, BrazilDuring his lightning visit to Brazil George W. Bush was hardly recognizable as the man who toppled the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, engineered the overthrow and execution of Saddam Hussein, and gripped Iran, Syria and North Korea by the throat. He set in motion the procedures leading to a bilateral agreement on biofuels, heaped loads of praise on Brazil and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in particular, and even danced spontaneously at an event for poorer children.

Apart from some scattered violence at a demonstration in São Paulo, the visit went very smoothly. As a PR exercise, it was highly successful but it is doubtful if it will bring any real breakthroughs, particularly in dismantling trade barriers or safeguarding the environment.

Lula looked a little ill at ease at times as though he did not want to be praised in public by Bush who is detested by his Workers Party (PT) and viewed with suspicion by a large sector of Brazilian society. He also sounded a little desperate when he repeated his "willingness to participate in a meeting in any part of the world to bring together leaders if this can help us overcome the final difficulties between us and a truly historic (trade) agreement", as though half a dozen world leaders locked in a room can suddenly solve one of the world's trickiest problems.

At times, he also looked more like the guest than the host as Bush set the agenda. At one point Bush said "I'll answer that one for him" in reply to a question from a journalist to Lula before Lula could open his month. Bush also wrapped up the press conference as though he were back in Washington.

In one comment, Lula spoke of the "G" point, a sexual reference which may be acceptable when horsing around in a bar with your pals but hardly appropriate to a press conference with the President of the United States.

America's Security Comes First

Bush also made it clear that while he was in favor of expanding biofuels like ethanol, where Brazil has great expertise, his main reason for doing so was the US's national security. The US wants to reduce its dependence on imports of foreign oil, much of which comes from volatile areas like the Middle East and, closer to home, Venezuela.

This is what he said: "People have wondered why the President of the United States would be so interested in diversification of our energy supply, and here are the reasons. One, if you're dependent upon oil from overseas you have a national security issue. In other words, dependency upon energy from somewhere else means that you're dependent upon the decisions from somewhere else.

"And so as we diversify away from the use of gasoline by using ethanol we're really diversifying away from oil. Secondly, dependency upon oil creates an economic problem for not only the United States, but anybody else who imports oil. In a globalized world, if the demand for oil goes up in China or India, it runs up the price of gasoline in our respective countries.

"And therefore, diversification away from oil product is in the economic interests of our respective countries. And finally... we all feel incumbent to be good stewards of the environment. It just so happens that ethanol and biodiesel will help improve the quality of the environment in our respective countries."

Lula Turns Green

The priorities show that Bush is still a Texas oil man at heart and president of a country which intends looking after its own interests and one in which the car is king. It was left to Lula, who started his political career as a labor union leader in a car plant, to attempt to salvage Brazil's tattered reputation in environmental matters and show some unconvincing green credentials.

"We...who have polluted the world so much in the 20th century, need to make our contribution to de-polluting it in the 21st century. We, after all, are responsible, and we want our children and our grandchildren to be able to live in a world that is less polluted than the one we live in today," he said.

Bush was equally blunt in stating that the US would not be scrapping or reducing the stiff tariffs it imposes on imports of Brazilian ethanol. In reply to the question mentioned above to Lula on whether he had been able to persuade Bush to help make the US Congress lower the sugar ethanol tariffs Bush was brutally frank if somewhat inarticulate. "It's not going to happen. The law doesn't end until 2009; then the Congress accepts it - will look at it when the law ends," he said.

The difficulty of any breakthrough in this area was highlighted back in Washington by a leading Republican Senator, Charles Grassley, who said he welcomed the memorandum of understanding on biofuels since it made no specific reference to the joint construction of ethanol plants by the US and Brazil.

Lula will no doubt raise these matters once again on his forthcoming trip to the US where he will meet Bush in less public surroundings at Camp David. He may win some minor concession but that is about all he can expect.

Avoiding the C-Word

Finally, if Bush did not bring much to Brazil then he did not get much from Brazil. Lula made it quite clear that he was not going to change his approach to Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, the self-proclaimed radical leader of Latin America and public enemy of Bush.

Lula reminded Bush that the "dictatorships which our region suffered from for two decades are no more than a painful memory of the past. All South American governments have arisen from free elections with broad, popular participation." In his reply to a journalist's question about Chavez, Bush did even mention the C-word.

Protests?
written by Marcio Vieira, March 12, 2007
I haven't seen any Brazilian recently clashing with the police in protest for high interest rates, poverty, violence, corruption and political scandals. Instead, they were all partying naked on the streets and sending precious food to a ficticious goddess who supposedly lives in the oceans. Where are the elite students and the PT protesters when the PCC was spreading violence in Sao Paulo burning buses and killing people? Am I missing something here? Why are these people complaining about a visit of the president of the United States who wants to buy Brazilian ethanol, but they don't seem to care about the daily humiliation that the Brazilian government and its elites force down the throats of the Brazilian citizens?

couldn't have said it better!

These young university idiots don't have the balls nor the honesty to look within themselves and find the truth. It's much easier to point a finger. That way you don't have to make any changes, which are always painful to make.

As continent-sized countries with a frontier tradition, Brazil and the United States have much in common. Among the many common themes in their histories are the westward movement of peoples immigrating from Europe, the importance of native peoples, the struggle for independence, the legacy of slavery, and the challenges of economic development. The United States and Brazil: Expanding Frontiers, Comparing Cultures explores and illustrates these themes by drawing upon the vast and unique collections of the partner institutions.

Importance of discussions between Americans and Brazilians

We may find answers for similar problems that both countries faced in the past. Brazil and the United States had more similarities in their history that we can even start imagining. A few different decisions in the past made this countries take different routes. An American that studies Brazil will understand better the United States and a Brazilian that studies American history will understand better Brazil. Dana I think you may like this link and it will show you with facts that Americans are not responsible for our problems, on the contrary history show us that they were always trying to help Brazil. Thomas Jefferson expressed that very clearly in his opinion on us, Jefferson used to call us brothers . Regarding the Military coup I suggest you review your opinion because you are wrong on blaming the US for it. Brazilian society wanted the military in power in 1964, maybe not in the 1970's but certainly in the 1960's.
The love of one's country is a splendid thing. But why should love stop at the border?

the difference in Brazilians from Americans as i can see it

when the people came over from the northern European countries they were looking to found a new way of life , build cites , there own churches own there own land and be self governed .the rich from Europe brought indentured servants .

very few wanted to go back to Europe
before ww1 &2 tens of thousands more migrated to the USA to get away from old world rule

while people from Spain and Portugal came to conquer , bring back gold , silver , any thing of value ,
there time in the world was dictated by the king & queen , and buy the church , there lands were given to them through Royal proclamation . if they were rich they borough there slaves

if they did what they were told they were brought back home to court along with all the stolen goodies they were able to smuggle back into there prospective country's .

when Portugal was under attic thousands came to Brazil to escape war . most never went back

our two countries are so much alike it is like a brother and sister fighting .

while Brazil is older it was held back the old laws of kingdom ship , where one person told every body what to do and when .

in America we took all the different ideas from all the people and applied them until it worked

Brazil is just now getting at that point in its evolution , but the old guard do not want to let go of the power that have had for so long .

while we face it going the other way our government is doing its best to take away our individual freedoms

as Americans we can laugh at our selves and other people laugh at us they are just words

in Brazil people get offended if you laugh at them and there country .

Have a good night down there
Get a f**king clue!

Pathetic ignorant f**k! So the millions of immigrants that came here, not only portuguese, but arabs, germans, italians, japanese, etc, they were all "stealing to send back home"?

Get a f**king clue!

The same exploitation of being a colony the US suffered. Brainwashed moron.

read the history of the black ships .
how the pope granted total empire of japan to the portgues for trade
the arabs , germans , italians, ect did not come to brasil in numbers till after ww1 and then more after ww2

you never mention the confederates that came to brasil after the war of the states whom brought there own slaves but the brasilian goverment took them away and told them they had to by slaves in brasil and the goverment officals of brazil kept them and resold them .
and that to this day they have a confederate comunity in brasil

the british left the US along with the king and queen

do you ever do any thing for free ?
are you motivated by the thought of getting something from someone that you help brfore?

Get yourself a history book, idiot. Their migration started in the 19th century, since large portions of the south weren't inhabitted enough and the government wanted to put people there in order for foreigners not to claim it.

What an imbecile. Yes, a few of those americans came here, but most stayed there and we can see them posting crap in this site all the time.
A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both.
written by forrest allen brown, March 15, 2007
and when did ww1 start ?

124 is a few , they still fly the confederate flag , and have there way of life glad they got out of the slave market

if they were germans , arabs, italians , would that not make them foreigners ?

Your point is well taken. We know some of the Confederate descendants in and around Santarem. And some of the Pomeranians in ES and some of the Polish around Curitiba. Truly Brazil has many faces.

Truly Brazil has many faces.

It sure does, but I am affraid you don't know it. In this very site there was another article about the celebration of 150 years of Arab immigration, you see, it's a lot more than a few "confederates" and a lot earlier than WW1.

This characterization some make about Brazil is truly non-sensical.
a characterization of brazil would be TWO faces

That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard. I have arab in my family and they didn't "took and left" anything. Probably the lebanese community doesn't exist, it is just our imagination.
SO YOU READ OUT LOUD TO YOURSELF

Thomas Jefferson, author of the "wall of separation" that is revered as gospel by secularists and civil libertarians who want to purge Christianity from the public square, was firmly in favor of prohibiting public religious expression.

Right?

Hardly. But that's the message many in the so-called mainstream are preaching today.

I wonder how many Americans are familiar with the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom? Authored by Thomas Jefferson, it appears on the wall of the Jefferson Memorial.

Here's an excerpt: "Almighty God hath created the mind free. All attempts to influence it by temporal punishments or burthens . . . are a departure from the plan of the Holy Author of our religion . . ."

Mr. Jefferson clearly believed that America was a gift from God and that it was God himself who granted us the ability to reason and properly live our lives.

While it was Mr. Jefferson who drafted the measure, James Madison piloted it through the Virginia Legislature in 1786. History shows that each of these men deemed the legislation to be among their most satisfying triumphs, with Mr. Jefferson even noting on his tombstone that he was the author not only of the Declaration of Independence but also of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom.

I have been reading Newt Gingrich's latest book, "Rediscovering God in America: Reflections on the Role of Faith in Our Nation's History and Future." I believe every Christian in America should get a copy of this book in order to fully understand the rich Judeo-Christian influence on the burgeoning nation.

Mr. Gingrich takes readers on a journey through Washington, D.C., to observe a variety of monuments and relics, beginning with the National Archives. There, we see the undying words of the Declaration of Independence: we "are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights."

Our nation's Capitol is full of these examples: from the striking statue of Moses holding the Ten Commandments looking over the rotunda of the Library of Congress, to the depiction of the Commandments in the floor of the National Archives, to the Adams Prayer Mantel in the White House ("I pray heaven to bestow the best of blessings on this house and all that shall hereafter inhabit it").

Last week, David Barton, founder of WallBuilders, spoke at Liberty University. He debunked the modern movement to cast our Founders as "a bunch of atheist, agnostic deists," calling it completely invalid. He detailed the history and writings of many of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and their obvious allegiance to Christianity.

These men include:

Dr. John Witherspoon, who wrote, "I entreat you in the most earnest manner to believe in Jesus Christ, for there is no salvation in any other [Acts 4:12] . . ."

Dr. Benjamin Rush, an innovator of mass-produced Bible printing, initiator of the Sunday school movement in America and founder of the first Bible society in our nation.

John Dickinson, also a signer of the U.S. Constitution, who wrote in his will: "Rendering thanks to my Creator for my existence and station among His works, for my birth in a country enlightened by the Gospel and enjoying freedom, and for all His other kindnesses, to Him I resign myself, humbly confiding in His goodness and in His mercy through Jesus Christ for the events of eternity."

John Hanc**k, first governor of Massachusetts, who issued at least 24 calls for public fasting and prayer and urged people to pray and fast about their fellow citizens becoming Christians.
This is not fallacy; it is our history. But it is a history that is being routinely rewritten, ignored, and disrespected.

I believe it is imperative that Christians go back to the basics to learn about the Judeo-Christian foundations of our nation. Purchase books like Mr. Gingrich's "Rediscovering God in America," regularly visit the WallBuilders Web site (www.WallBuilders.com) in order to become knowledgeable and conversant on our nation's glorious history. And to my pastor friends, I say that we must ensure that our congregations understand that America was founded on Christian principles and we must be proactive in defending them.

Let us work together to safeguard the chronicle of our nation's founding from those who are shamefully and falsely preaching that we are a godless nation.

Bush committed hate crimes with the stench of terrorism
written by Andrew Yu-Jen Wang, March 04, 2009
Speaking of George W. Bush:

George W. Bush committed hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism (indicated in my blog).

George W. Bush did in fact commit innumerable hate crimes.

And I do solemnly swear by Almighty God that George W. Bush committed other hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism which I am not at liberty to mention.

Many people know what Bush did.

And many people will know what Bush did—even to the end of the world.

Bush was absolute evil.

Bush is now like a fugitive from justice.

Bush is a psychological prisoner.

Bush has a lot to worry about.

Bush can technically be prosecuted for hate crimes at any time.

In any case, Bush will go down in history in infamy.

I am not sure where I had read it before, but anyway, it is a linguistically excellent statement, and it goes kind of like this: “If only it were possible to ban invention that bottled up memory so it never got stale and faded.” Oh wait—off the top of my head—I think the quotation came from my Lower Merion High School yearbook.
