Will the Sudden US-Brazil Romance Last? It Will Depend on Terror Factor PDF Print E-mail
2007 - March 2007

Brazilian women protest against BushIn the several pound issue of last Sunday's Washington Post (3/11/07), President Bush's Latin American trip attracted no more than two or three words - three words? - in the entire paper. This shocking fact is not so much a dereliction on the Post's part, but that neither the trip has amounted to much, nor than one or two good ideas seemed to come out of it.

The question is...
written by Costinha, March 13, 2007
Is the US a trustworthy country to have any agreements with? I think not.

It has bee said before that when one sign agreements with the US is always based on me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me....the me being the US.

With the global economy the ways it is, the US can be by passed in favor of other markets.

More idiot statement there is not !

In view of the near Us$ 800 billion trade deficit the USA have, guess what would happen to Brazilian exports, Chinese exports and all developing countries exports, if suddenly the
USA refuse to have a deficit by taxing imports just as the developing nations do. SAME TARIFFS AND YOU IMPLODE !!!!!!

It would not be a recession but a depression in those countries...due to the snowball effects ????

Costinha just demonstrated the average knowledge, culture and education of about 90 % of brazilians. No doubt why Brazil never really grow and have constantly the lowest economic growth rate of ALL developing countries.

Idiots never perform...by definition, especially when it is in your genes for the last several centuries and transmitted through generations !

It is certainly going to last as long as Chavez keeps attempting to interfere with Petrobras and Brasil's energy supplies through his proxy Morales. And, to a lesser extent, the same goes for all the
blather from Commandante Kirchner. The rest of South America needs to realize that Brasil is the ascendent country and economy in the region and this kind of nonsense is not going to be tolerated.
The fact that the big photo op from the Bush visit occurred at a Petrobras was no coincidence. And, neither was the ethanol agreement which was aimed directly at encouraging economic
cooperation between Brasil on the one hand and Central America and the Caribbean on the other, areas Chavez and Castro consider their back yard. PDVSA was considered the number one oil
company in Latin America 10 years ago. Now, thanks to Chavez, it is nothing compared to Petrobras.
The U.S. and Brazil

The U.S. is devistating Mid Western soil by over growing corn. The production of ethanol from corn by the U.S. is not long term. . .IT IS RUINING THE SOIL. The visit on the 23rd will produce press if that is what is important, but more importantly there will be significant economic and political U.S. Brazillian alliance. The law as passed by Congress regarding the tarrif on ethanol will expire in 2009, the President cannot decree law in the U.S., but the economic and politcal alliance of Brazil and the U.S. is a work in progress. Two years is a short time to change the direction of the U.S. It is a multi layered, multi faceted economy, corn and farm subsidies have to be changed etc. . .there is a lot going on, change of Congress, etc. . .but the body language of Bush with Lula was good, playful friendly not uptight.

You have been bitch-slapped pretty severely by the folks above Costinha. And remember, the U.S. could do the same to Brazil too.

Where did you get that from? As far as I know, the U.S we wouldn't even come close to meeting our ethanol demand even at full production capacity. Brazil can more than tripple their production without even tapping into amazon rain forest and other protected regions. Brazil is currently the #1 exporter of ethanol in the world. Petrobas is currently working on producing cellulosic ethanol. They've struck new deals with Japan, Nigeria, and Indonesia just to name a few. China is also interested. Everyone is looking for alternatives to oil and Brazil is the best positioned to fill the increasing demand. To date, they provide and cheaper, better and more environmentally friendly ethanol than what we prodcue in the U.S. I know it's hard for us to admit, but they really have some leverage on this issue.

If the supply of available crude were to diminish 10 or more percent per year, alcohol would have a bright future. Remains to be seen if it can hold on, since crude is not going down 10% a year according to the experts I read. The death of crude has been highly exaggerated.
