Bush Just Learned That Brazil Is No US Backyard Any Longer PDF Print E-mail
2007 - March 2007
Written by Conor Foley
Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:32

Presidents Bush and Lula from the US and Brazil The most interesting thing about the recent visit by President Bush to Brazil is how uninteresting most Brazilians find it. Thousands of trade unionists, students and activists from Brazil's large landless movement have demonstrated against Bush, who is almost universally loathed in Brazil.

Dislike for him spans the domestic political spectrum. An opinion poll for the BBC showed that 60% of Brazilians had a negative opinion of him, which was one of the highest figures of any country in the world.

But it would be wrong to portray Bush's visit as a "Plot against Latin America", despite the paranoid precautions of his security services. As far as most are concerned, it is a good thing for Brazil's most important trading partner to be visiting their country. And as Brazil's President Lula made clear before the visit, the two governments have much to discuss.

What Brazil wants is very specific. It wants an end to trade-distorting US agricultural subsidies and is threatening to take a case against the US at the World Trade Organisation over US protectionism of its ethanol industry.

And it wants US support for its proposals to reform the UN security council, including a seat for a Latin American country. It also wants to discuss measures to avert the threat of global warming and protect the Amazon rain forest.

The issue that Lula has explicitly ruled off the agenda is Venezuela and its radical government, led by Hugo Chavez. "We respect the sovereignty of other countries", Lula said in an interview, "and there is only space on the agenda to discuss the problems facing our own countries."

This was, in effect, a preemptive strike against what everyone knows to be one of the main reasons for Bush's visit to Latin America.

His trip was the culmination of several months in which Chavez and Bush have been acting like rival suitors trying to woo the heart of Latin America's governments. Both have showered promises and presents during their quests.

Bush has doubled aid to Latin America since taking office, to US$ 1.6 billion a year, although the bulk of this goes to the rightwing government of Colombia and the self-evidently ludicrous "war on drugs". In a speech in advance of his visit he promised "millions more" to improve education, housing and healthcare across the region.

However, he is unlikely to be able to compete with Chavez's largesse in this department. Since the start of this year alone, Venezuela has given US$ 10 million to Bolivia, US$ 600 million to Nicaragua, and promised US$ 1.5 billion in investment to Ecuador and the same amount in debt relief to Argentina. In his first term, Chavez spent an estimated US$ 25 billion in foreign aid, most of it in Latin America.

Viewed in this light is not difficult to see why Chavez, who  conducted his own "rival" tour to coincide with Bush's visit, got a better reception.

It would be wrong, however, to reduce the options facing Latin America to a clash between these two forces. If anything Bush and Chavez are regarded as mirror images of each other: egotistical ideologues who see the world in simplistic black and white terms.

Many members of Lula's workers' party are former guerrillas who were imprisoned and tortured by the CIA-backed military dictatorship. Some won their freedom through kidnapping the US ambassador of the time. However, everyone knows that Brazil's most pressing social problems - crime, corruption, poverty and inequality - have home-grown sources and home-grown solutions.

Brazil already pursues an independent foreign policy, so the domestic political impact of the Iraq war is far less keenly felt here than in places like Britain. Lula has also been actively trying to diversify Brazil's trading partners, cultivating links in Africa and building the Brazil-Russia-India-China (BRIC) block into an emerging global force.

The current round of negotiations, which will set the global price for steel, for example, are being conducted by Brazil and China, who are now, respectively, the largest producers and consumers of iron ore in the world. Brazil has freed itself from debt to the IMF and weathered the recent shocks to the world's stock markets remarkably well.

It is this economic and political self-confidence, which allows Lula to face Bush on his own terms. The days in which the US could consider Latin America its backyard are gone. The US is going to have to get used to dealing with its southern neighbours on a new basis.

LOATHING easier than Law and Order
written by aes, March 14, 2007
'Universally loathed'. . .what presumption. How can you loath what you do not know or understand? What do you know of his life, the responsibility for United States. . .why dont you loathe the people that for twenty years have done nothing to bring Law and Order to the lives of Brazil. . .why dont you loathe your corruption and sloth your passivity why dont you loath your Favela's, crime, murder, corruption, graft, inefficiency. . .before you LOATHE someone that has nothing to do with you or the quality of your lives. . .its chic, it distracts from what you NEED to be doing and BTY Brazil is doing great the value of its money has increased by 67% in the past three years, it has expanded its technology and agronomy to the world. . .LOATH what prevents your potential to greatness. The United States is interested in doing business,it is interested in a Brazil that is affluent and economically powerful. It is not threatened by your success it is threatened by poverty. Peace through prosperity. . .look at China. . .twenty years ago a Marxian militaristic threat today an economic superpower that has no interest in war, it now has too much to lose. And that is the single thing people are most interested is what is theres and China will become one of the richest nations on Earth. . .and so will Brazil if it stops LOATHING and starts doing. Your article is falacious and pretentious and its reasoning specious.

'Presumptious, pretentious, fallacious and specious'. You have an impressive grasp of long words. Now if you could learn to tell the difference between the author of an article and the country and people that he is writing about, I am sure you would have a great future as a writer. This article was originally written for a British newspaper. It describes popular opinion towards Bush, which is borne out by public opion polls in Brazil, and then goes on to describe how Brazilian economic development is changing its relationship towards the United States. It explicitly states that most Brazilians, while dislking Bush as a person, think it is a good thing for the heads of the two governments to meet to discuss issues of mutual importance such as trade. So your point is?
Loathing
written by aes, March 14, 2007
The objection is to 'universal loathing'. . .The point is that the manifestation of 'loathing' is a transference of the feelings of impotency of the inability of the Brazilian citizenry to change after twenty years the quality and equinimity of daily life, of graft, greed, crime, corruption, poverty, economic inequality. . .this angst is targeted to the 'straw man' it dissipates self hatred for their own feelings of impotency to change their lives, and the inequality of it. Sao Paulo had 10,000 demonstrators out of a population of 10,333,200 that hardly constitutes reason for your comment that Bush is 'almost universally loathed in Brazil.' As the author you have a journalistic responsibility to accuracy. The reader concludes that 'Brazil universally' loathes Bush, that was your intent. It was my intent to examin the source of this 'loathing' since you cannot 'loath' what you have no empirical knowledge of. That is, 'a priori', the source of racism and biggotry, you reinforce this with 'Bush is 'almost universally loathed in Brazil.' It is progagandistic not objective journalism.

Then there is the 'former CIA backed military dictatorship' imprisoned and tortured comment, as that were axiomatic. . .for what journalistic pupose was that thrown in, but to fomment what. . .balanced journaliism. . .or a kind of fashionable 'anti Americanism' engendering yourself to the reader?

"How can you loath what you do not know or understand?" get your head out of your ass, the world understands Bush et al very clearly and we know very well what "responsibility for United States" implies. Sorry but the great American veener has become tarnished beyond repair. The rot has never been more visible and it is only going to get worse. Anti Amercanism has little to do with seeming fashionable but it has eveything to do with expressing a distaste for ignorance, hypocrisy and greed.

Most Brazilians are cautiously paranoid, why would not a high profile visitor be any different?

What Brazil wants is very specific. It wants an end to trade-distorting US agricultural subsidies

And most of us in Brazil would like to buy Electronic products etc. from the U.S. without paying 60-100% import tax to the Brazilian Gov.

Exclude me from the "everyone knows". However, one would assume perhaps.

Does this mean that Latin America goes to the highest bidder? Or that L.A. is so corrupt it can only be bought? or Latin Americans are so dumb they can only be won over by a "Brinde"?

An opinion poll for the BBC showed that 60% of Brazilians had a negative opinion of him

The BBC should poll American citizens in the U.S. as well.

Viewed in this light is not difficult to see why Chavez, who conducted his own "rival" tour to coincide with Bush's visit, got a better reception.

Idiots who give their countries money away are far more entertaining in proportion to how much they give away. Real idiots are also more entertaining than
those perceived to be idiots.

Bush has doubled aid to Latin America since taking office, to US$ 1.6 billion a year, although the bulk of this goes to the rightwing government of Colombia and the self-evidently ludicrous "war on drugs".

If it is Ludicrous would the alternative Left wing Government exporting massive amounts of drugs be more logical?

One begins to wonder who is more paranoid or delusional? As Radical Islam is threatening to destroy the society we current abhor, the press focuses more and more on Bush and the U.S. and its failings. As far as ignorance goes lets not point to just Brazil, because there is a more pervasive growing ignorance in the first world.
Especially beginning with the press. Radical Islam knows that its their time now, because we let them know it is. Best one can do is become Gay and wait for a holy war or convert to Islam! Radical Islam? "It's time is now" what myth. An American invention, you obviously have the facts on this all screwed up, it's American foreign policy since WW1 that has lead to this situation, and it is America's buddies in Saudi who are funding the spread of a radical form of Islam (Wahhabism) - so the oil you consume supports the expansion of Islam. You must be another Fox News aficionado. So what about the radical Judaeo Christian fanatics influencing American policy? There is such focus on the US because of its influence on events across the globe, or don't you get this? Why is America so interested in the rest of the world? because of it's need for ever expanding corporate colonialism, or don't you get this either? I suppose you are in denial about global warming also? Therefore in denial about the role that American industry played in spending millions creating spurious anti-global warming studies. Cheney as recently as two weeks was still towing the oil industry line. It seems you want to simplify everything so that is conforms to this mindless "them or us" scenario. Your country is in serious trouble. It's such a shame so many Americans are oblivious to this fact.

This is called a superpower. A superpower who does not like to be attacked.

Why is America so interested in the rest of the world?

We wondered the same thing before we entered World War 2. Also we are the world leading economic superpower which means the world must be stable to support a stable economy.

Sure seems to be getting warmer to me, then again sometimes it gets cold too.
I will leave that one to the climatologist. Let them make that call.

with that statement you have proven that your comprehension of this post-industrial 21st century of ours is very limited. Even George Bush would appreciate the stupidity of that remark.

News does not boil down to two sources as you seem to suggest. I survey a wide selection of sources from global news feeds available through various web-bot based services. No filters, just raw news from a broad cross section of sources. My views are based largely on fact, unlike yours, which seems to be derived from some patriotic instinct i.e. your gut; as opposed to your brain. The truth is out there, you just have to take off those stupid all American shades you are wearing, or maybe you like being f**ked in the ass by your own president.

I don't actually come from Brazil, no idea why you should automatically assume that, are you a xenophobe or something?

Really here's a brief overview

"Given the historical significance of the Ottoman Empire’s demise in 1918, and the ongoing importance of Middle Eastern oil reserves to Western economies, a close study of this conflict provides two important lessons:

1. The Treaty of Versailles, agreed to by the Western Powers in 1919, paved the way for military and political chaos in the Middle East, which continues to this very day.

2. Oil reserves in the Middle East became an important strategic concern for Western Powers, helping to justify their economic, diplomatic and military interference in the region.

After the end of World War I, most of the Ottoman Empire was carved up into “spheres of influence”, controlled mostly by the British and French. The remaining territories became the modern state of Turkey in 1923 – after a five-year struggle by Turkish nationalists against Western domination.

With little regard for cultural, historical, religious and demographic considerations, the West sponsored the creation of several new nations: Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Thus, a “tinderbox” was built from Western greed, igniting a multitude of wars, revolts, coups and military occupations that truly have made the defeat of the Ottoman Empire little more than a hollow victory."

There are innumerable sources to support the thesis that the notion of a global Islamist terrorist network existed prior to 9/11 was a myth. The Americans created the term 'Al Qaeda'. Before 9/11, Osama bin Laden’s group was small and fractious. Washington inadvertently helped to build it into a global threat. Another myth, just like Saddams yellow cake purchase and his non-existent weapons of mass destruction. Fact, not conspiracy.

In relation to Judaeo/Christian influence. Here's a Harvard paper called 'THE ISRAEL LOBBY AND U.S. FOREIGN POLICY' http://ksgnotes1.harvard.edu/R...1_walt.pdf
should make things a little clearer for you.

And here for your amusement is a well documented site from Cornell University dedicated to 'The Rise of the Religious Right in the Republican Party' http://www.theocracywatch.org/introduction2.htm

Suicide bombs? Cluster bombs? DU weaponry? no difference, people are dying because of religion and greed, picking hairs about methods is meaningless. What difference is there between shelling civilians and strapping a bomb to yourself? none, people end-up dead in both instances.

Anyway on this site we have gay bashers, xenophobes, pedantic nobs who picks hairs about word usage so they can appear more clever than they really are (when they probably generate sentences using a Java based profundity generator), and another person who doesn't no what a web-bot based news service is, it's probably all the same person anyway; that only way he can make his (I’m presuming you are male because a woman would have more sense) office job exciting is by pretending to be lot's of different people and go about posting pro-American garbage on obscure left wing news boards. Please learn the real news:

It's the Dollar, Stupid!

Why do gold and silver usually decline along with the stock market these days when it should work the other way around?

Write down the following on a sheet of paper in big block letters with a felt-tip marker and pin it on the wall above your desk where you can see it every day: It's the dollar, stupid!

The dollar is the key. Watch it. Currently, they move heaven and earth to keep it above 84.0. That keeps gas cheap, the stock market inflated and people thinking that it is just another day. It went under 84.0 a bit yesterday. It sank further today.

They push the dollar up by manipulating precious metals (PM) and stock index futures markets.

They couldn't wait to shore up the dollar until Friday this week because momentum was building from yesterday. Friday is their favored day because (1) so many traders take 3-day weekends, (2) there is no overseas market until Sunday (because it already is tomorrow in Japan, due to the International Date Line) and (3) the lesson of a drop in the price of gold and silver is best imprinted on the minds of an off-work, Internet-surfing, hand-wringing public that must live with their PM losses until the markets open again on Monday.

Right now, in the overseas markets, gold and silver are being hammered down - it is easier to do in that much smaller, thinner market. Already, the indicator for the dollar has gone positive, as a result. Expect more tomorrow. Expect lots more on Friday if tomorrow doesn't do the trick and past patterns hold up. When the dollar gets back above 84.0, they let up. Just watch and see if the dollar doesn't move back above 84.0 on Friday if it doesn't manage to get there tomorrow.

If we are lucky, by Friday silver might well be bashed down near $12.00, which is a good next buy point. Other buy points might well exist for every 50 cents they knock silver down below 12, if we are lucky enough for that to happen. When the prices of gold and silver come back, it will happen too fast to get on board the train, so put that thought out of your mind. Yes, you are that obvious.

Eventually, the dollar's floor-at-any-cost will have to drop to 83.0, then 82.0 and so on. Gold and silver will plateau upward in lockstep with the dollar's stair-step controlled descent. How far can it go? How deep is the ocean? Can you say Z-E-R-O, boys and girls?

To keep the dollar Ponzi scheme afloat, they keep increasing the money supply, which originates in debt. If for no other reason, this fact alone guarantees our invading Iran and setting off WWIII. The debt must be blamed on something other than the perps running the system.

It is a juggling act where the juggler keeps throwing another ball into the air to add to the in-progress performance, else the audience begins to lose interest. Logic demands that, eventually, he will start dropping balls - probably all of them because he will try to save the first one he misses, then the second, then....

Now that the housing market no longer is sopping up all those excess dollars that must be created, over and above those we give China for toaster ovens and those we expend in the Middle East, they have to go somewhere. The stock market will not decline - they are holding it level to keep middle America complacent (pensions and IRAs, donchaknow) and have been doing so for so long that it now has set a record for sideways stability. Nor will they allow the market to pump up again like they did a few years ago before it laid an egg (the money leaving it went into real estate and commodities). Where will those dollars now leaving real estate go, do you suppose? Been to the grocery store lately?

Just yesterday, the dean of Wall Street, Richard Russell, said: "The best measure of the dollar is that number of dollars it requires to purchase a measure of pure wealth -- an ounce of gold. Gold is both the unit and the messenger. The government and the central bank fear the messenger. The reason why they fear the messenger is obvious - they are frightened of the message."

The message? The dollar is doomed and hyperinflation can be seen just over the horizon. Yet another reason for war, upon which they will blame it all.

It's the dollar, stupid.

Yes, it is just that simple.

Trade Unions have no grasp of national economies, are self serving destructive parasitic leeches in the countries that harbor them. Trade Unions are like a cancer—they fare less well in healthy economies than in weaker ones, and given time or everything they want, will destroy national economies. Students are devoid of wisdom and life experiences....all they have is raw energy and have traditionally been used as puppets by their political/military puppetmasters. Activists are typicall commie, leftwing and/or liberal losers who've historically not contributed an iota to modern scientific progress or strenghtening economies.

So it says a lot when these idiot LOSERS demonstrate agains Bush.

The Treaty of Sèvres which was ratified by Treaty of Lausanne led to the creation of the modern Middle East and Republic of Turkey. The League of Nations granted France mandates over the Syria and the Lebanon and granted the United Kingdom mandates over the Iraq and the Palestine (which was comprised of two autonomous regions: Palestine and Transjordan). Parts of the Ottoman Empire on the Arabian Peninsula became parts of what are today Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
In summer of 1941 Britain and the USSR invaded Iran to prevent Iran from allying with the Axis powers. The Allies occupied Iran, securing a supply line to Russia, Iran's petroleum infrastructure, and forced the Shah to abdicate in favor of his son, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. In 1951, a nationalist politician, Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh rose to prominence in Iran and was elected Prime Minister. As Prime Minister, Mossadegh became enormously popular in Iran by nationalizing the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (later British Petroleum, BP) which controlled the country's oil reserves. In response, Britain embargoed Iranian oil and began plotting to depose Mossadegh. Members of the British Intelligence Service invited the United States to join them, convincing U.S. President Eisenhower that Mossadegh was reliant on the Tudeh (Communist) Party to stay in power. In 1953, President Eisenhower authorized Operation Ajax, and the CIA took the lead in overthrowing Mossadegh and supporting a US-friendly monarch.
It was the realization that the future of warfare was mechanization and as a consequence oil was going to be manifestly of vital cosequence. History is a thousand years in becoming the NOW.

God bless the English and the French and Russia for the state of the world is of their making.

Wrong Mr.Nob Jockey. I see that you know very little of Ottoman History, the claim is just stupid to tell you the truth. The part "a global Islamist terrorist network existed prior to 9/11 was a myth." is criminal.

The dollar is backed by armament and technology. The deficit spending necessary to prosecute the war is what drove the price of gold from $275 to $740 with every success in the war the price of gold will fall. The value of gold is what it costs to mine it ($200 an oz plus or minus).
When Newt Gingrich put an end to deficit spending gold dropped from $820 to $280. . .gold has been cheap for a decade because Russia has been selling literally tons of it. Gold at $300 is worth buying at $600 or $800 it is 'a fools errand'. Gold is only worth what you can sell it for, as is the value of anything. . .the U.S. is also the largest producer of food on the planet, though I like the Canadian dollar, it is undervalued, gold is not.

Escolas Técnicas brasileiras e engenheiros incompetentes do ITA, deste

if you had a clue you would know where the truth lies, and yes the use of the term 'Al Qaeda' in reference to a global terrorist network was fabricated by US intelligence, fact. Bin Laden adopted the tag after it was introduced by the Americans.

Osama bin Laden explained the origin of the term in his videotaped interview with al Jazeera journalist Tayseer Alouni in late October 2001:

“ The name 'al-Qaeda' was established a long time ago by mere chance. The late Abu Ebeida El-Banashiri established the training camps for our mujahedeen against Russia's terrorism. We used to call the training camp al-Qaeda [meaning "the base" in English]. The name stayed.

According to Bin Laden "al-Qaeda" was a term used by the mujahedeen, not the CIA. All that I have gathered from all you have said is that you are paranoid, especially when it comes to the FOX news channel and Bill O'Riley.
Baseing all the problems in the Middle East on the United States from the "The Treaty of Versailles" is like blaming Global warming on Henry Ford.

There are innumerable sources to support the thesis that the notion of a global Islamist terrorist network existed prior to 9/11 was a myth.

Only an idiot/s would say that terrorism did not exist before 9/11.

Why Cuba is a democracy while the US is not - 1
written by Just an Observer, March 15, 2007
Why Cuba is a democracy and the US is not

Tim Anderson

In an age of propaganda and pseudo-democracy, the strongest opponents of imperial power are subject to the most ferocious attacks. One result of this is that many of the firmly held opinions about democracy in Cuba and in the United States of America bear an inverse relationship to relevant knowledge. As the Canadian scientist William Osler said, "the greater the ignorance the greater the dogmatism".

The US has run a powerful and illegal economic blockade against Cuba for almost 50 years, after its investment privileges were withdrawn. It now runs propaganda suggesting that the Cuban people need US-styled "democracy". Well let's look at democracy in both countries, including civil rights and participatory democracy, as well as representative democracy.

In representative democracy, Cuba is clearly ahead. Cubans have open elections for their National Assembly (as well as their provincial and local assemblies); this assembly then elects the ministers, including a president of the Council of Ministers.

In the US, there is a directly elected Congress and a president indirectly elected through electoral colleges. This president of state then appoints ministers. Yet a majority of the elected US Congress cannot block many presidential "prerogatives", including the waging of war.

So even when the majority of the population and the majority of the Congress oppose a war, the president can still wage it. In the US, then, the elected assembly does not really rule.

In Cuba, the Constitution (Art 12) repudiates wars of aggression and conquest, and all ministers are accountable to the elected National Assembly. The president of Cuba's Council of Ministers (falsely called a "dictator" by the imperial US president) is not above the National Assembly and has no power to "veto" a law passed by his country's National Assembly. In the US, the president can and does veto Congressional laws.

In the US, eligibility for election to office depends on subscription to one of two giant parties and substantial corporate sponsorship.

In Cuba, there are no electoral parties and there is no corporate sponsorship. The Cuban Communist Party is constitutionally recognised to promote socialist debate and policy, but has no electoral role. Citizens need not be CCP members to be elected, and many are not. National Assembly members (whether they belong to the CCP or not) do not represent any party, but rather their constituencies. The Cuban system bans foreign powers from funding electoral representatives or parties. The US Government, accustomed to foreign intervention, claims this law is "undemocratic".

In the US, millions of people are excluded from voting, either because they have some criminal conviction or they belong to one or other group of second class citizens (for example, Puerto Ricans, who pay tax but have no representative in Congress).

...
written by Just an Observer, March 15, 2007
In Cuba, very few are excluded from voting, and well over 90 per cent of the adult population (those over 16 years of age) actually do vote at each election. In the US, voter participation is often around 50 per cent.

While there are constitutional civil rights in both countries, these rights are stronger under the Cuban system. Cuban citizens have the constitutional right to employment, food, free education, free health care, housing (including family inheritance), political participation, freedom of expression, personal property and freedom of religion. The Cuban state is constitutionally bound to guarantee these rights.

US citizens have the right to freedom of speech, unlimited private property and the right to carry arms. They also have the right to participate in a "market" where their education, health and general well-being is often a gamble.

By the constitution, no-one in Cuba can be imprisoned without proper charges, a trial, and the right to a defence (Art 59). Cuba's "political prisoners" are those who have been convicted of taking money to help overthrow the constitutional system.

By contrast, in the US, thousands of people are held without charge or trial, including several hundred in the illegally occupied section of Cuba, at Guantanamo Bay. The rate of imprisonment in the US, which has more than two million prisoners, is far higher than in Cuba (or indeed any other country). African-Americans are massively over-represented in US jails. Prisoners in the US lose many of their civil rights; prisoners in Cuba keep most of their civil rights.

Institutionalised racial discrimination persisted in the US well into the 1960s. Even today, the gap between formal and effective rights is very great in the US, because there are so few social guarantees.

Cuba, on the other hand, has made great efforts to overcome the denial of effective rights on racial grounds. The Cuban guarantees of universal and free education, health care and social security have proven powerful and effective tools against social marginalisation. Educational and health standards in Cuba are similar to, and in some respects better than, those of the US. This is despite the US having an average per capita income almost ten times higher than Cuba. The US has permanent wealth and poverty. Cuba shares its ups and downs.

In the US "freedom of speech" means that a handful of private corporations dominate the mass media.

In Cuba, the media (television, radio, magazines, newspapers) are all run by public bodies or community organisations. No private individual or investment group can capture or dominate public debate in Cuba. Nor is there mind numbing, commercial advertising.

In the US mass communications are dominated by consumerism and celebrity trivia; politics is about individuals seeking public office. In Cuba, mass communications are dominated by education and cultural programs; politics is about co-ordinated social responses to social problems.

Why Cuba is a Democracy while the US is not - 3
written by Just an Observer, March 15, 2007
Cuba does not use state power to intervene in the affairs of others or to push international propaganda, but rather sends doctors to more than 60 countries to assist communities which have no medical services. This internationalism, recognised by the World Health Organization, contrasts with US interventionism.

The US government maintains state-propaganda stations (for example, Voice of America, Radio Marti), funds opposition political groups (through the National Endowment for Democracy, the State Department, USAID and the CIA) as well as funding pro-US academic centres and think tanks around the world.

Cuba's human rights record is far better than that of the US. Amnesty International said the US in 2006 had "thousands of detainees ... without charge or trial ... deaths in custody, torture and ill-treatment ... disappearances ... failure to hold officials at the highest levels accountable ... [for] war crimes or crimes against humanity". Within the US "sixty-one people died after being struck by police tasers ... [and] 60 people were executed". The Amnesty report did not address the thousands killed and maimed in the illegal occupation of Iraq.

By contrast, Amnesty's criticism of Cuba in 2006 was mild. There were some "restrictions on freedom of expression, association and movement ... nearly 70 prisoners of conscience ... the government attempted to suppress private entrepreneurship. More than 30 prisoners remained on death row [but] no one was executed."

Amnesty (whose US branch is responsible for reports on Cuba) did not note that the "seventy prisoners of conscience" had been charged and convicted of the specific offences of taking money from a foreign power to seek the overthrow of the Cuban constitutional system. Most were arrested in 2003, during a wave of hijackings, and many have since been released.

The US State Department - a fierce ideological opponent of Cuba - was forced to acknowledge in 2004 that Cuba had "no political killings ... or politically motivated disappearances", no religious repression, little discrimination, compulsory and free schooling, a universal health system, substantial artistic freedom, and no reports of torture. This contrasts strongly with the death squads and torture of dictatorial regimes trained and supported by the US throughout Latin America, for example in Chile, Guatemala, El Salvador and Colombia.

Cuban moves against homophobia and in support of gay rights have been more effective than those in the US. There is greater tolerance of sexual diversity in Cuba than in most Latin American countries and Churches which sustain such discrimination have less political influence in Cuba than in the US.

Cuba's Centre for National Sex Education (CENESEX) since 1989 has pushed sexual tolerance, including acceptance of and support for trans-sexuals. Effective education campaigns and testing has meant that Cuba has the lowest HIV infection rate in the Caribbean region, lower than the US. Since 2001 every HIV positive Cuban has had free access to highly active anti retroviral treatment (HAART). The US has developed strong HIV-AIDS programs, as a result of pressure group lobbying, but access to health services is not guaranteed.

US backed, Cuban exile "pro-democracy" activists are mostly terrorists, as far as Cubans are concerned. For example in March 2007 the Madrid Municipal Government awarded Cuban exile Carlos Alberto Montaner the "Tolerance Prize" for his writings on Cuba. Yet Montaner is a European-resident fugitive from Cuban justice who has been on the CIA payroll for many years. He is wanted in Cuba for bombings carried out in Cuba, many years ago, and has close links to the Miami-based Cuban American National Foundation (CANF), which openly backs terrorist attacks on Cuba.

The Cuban Government has not moved against the celebrated "pro democracy" activist Osvaldo Payá, who was awarded the Andrei Sakharov Prize in 2002 for "Freedom of Thought" following his creation of the "Varela Project", essentially a petition for small business rights. However Cuban television in December 2005 pointed out that Payá was receiving $1,000 a session for his classes on managing a US-backed "transition" in Cuba, held at the US Office of Interests in Havana. This is a clear breach of Cuban law, but Payá has not been arrested.

In 2005 Australian journalist Paul McGeough feted another CANF and Miami-backed "pro-democracy" activist, Raul Rivero. McGeough asserted that Rivero's arrest in 2003 "revived memories of the worst Soviet human rights abuses" and claimed that "Rivero's crime was twofold - possession of a typewriter, and a will to dream". McGeough did not point out that Rivero was convicted of receiving money from the US Office of Interests and the CANF, as part of quite explicit plans to overthrow the constitution and install a foreign-backed regime. Such activity is a crime in every country.
Why Cuba is a Democracy while the US is not - 4
written by Just an Observer, March 15, 2007
The most notorious US-backed "pro democracy activist" is Luis Posada Carriles, currently held in the US on immigration offences. The US refuses to extradite Posada to Venezuela, where he is wanted for the 1976 bombing of a Cuba passenger plane, which killed 73 civilians. Posada publicly confessed (in the US) to the bombings of Cuban tourist hotels in 1997, but was never charged. He was arrested and convicted over an assassination attempt on Fidel Castro in Panama in 2000, but was pardoned and released in 2004 by outgoing Panamanian President Mireya Moscoso, a US ally. The US government, in the middle of its self-proclaimed "war on terrorism", refuses to consider Posada a terrorist. Such is the US support for democracy in Cuba.

The US government funds a number of "civil society", "pro-democracy" and human rights groups, to support the US image of the world. For example, the France-based group Reporters without Borders, backed by the US National Endowment for Democracy, portrays Cuba as the single worst violator of "press freedom" in the Americas. However the International News Safety Institute notes that while no journalists were killed carrying out their work in Cuba over 1996-2006, 21 were killed in the USA, most of them murdered. (Let's put to one side the 72 others killed in Colombia, 31 in Mexico, 27 in Brazil, 16 in Peru, 13 in Guatemala, and so on.)

On participatory democracy, the US has very poor credentials. Economic policy is regarded either as "technical", to be managed by experts, or a province of the private corporations that dominate US social and political life. Consequently there are few debates or participatory initiatives on issues of major public concern, such as health care, access to education and military spending.

In Cuba, by contrast, there are substantial debates on public policy issues, through the elected assemblies and social organisations. For example, in Cuba's economic crisis of the 1990s, 18 months were spent debating the introduction of major economic changes such as introducing regulated foreign investment, the development of mass tourism, adjustments to services and taxes, preservation of free health care and education.

In the US, "structural adjustment" was a formula developed by the private banks, adopted at home and enforced in debtor countries. This "technical" formula, comprising privatisation, high interest rates, cuts to social services, user pays regimes, privileges for private investors and exporters, is presented as a "fait accompli". There is no public inclusion in a policy debate, so communities are forced to react defensively to this "technical" economic policy.

There is one final, important reason why the US cannot be a democracy. An imperial ambition drives it to dominate, invade and exploit the resources of other countries. US "defence forces" are almost exclusively deployed abroad and current US "national security" policy contemplates pre-emptive military strikes on more than sixty countries.

Like other imperial ventures, US ambitions are pursued on behalf of a small clique of private investors, at the expense of millions of poor and marginalised people within the US. Yet as the US writer Gore Vidal has pointed out, no imperial project can be mounted in a genuine democracy, or a genuine republic.

Cuba, on the other hand, has never invaded another country. It has only used its defence forces to defend its own people or to support others under attack, such as defending the Angolan and Namibian people from the apartheid South African army, in the 1980s.

Cuba has used its world class health sector to assist other countries. While the US sends thousands of troops to other countries, Cuba sends thousands of doctors. Further, more than 20,000 foreign students are studying medicine in Cuba, on fully-funded Cuban scholarships. This includes nearly 100 US students. This is one more reason why, if the word is to have any meaning, Cuba is a democracy and the US is not.

Von Beethoven
written by Ludwig Van Beethoven, March 15, 2007
Are we related? Von Beethoven and Van Beethoven...

I have this to say: The situation was very complex in 1964. The threat of communism in Brazil was very real and like your e-mail suggest most Brazilians that voted understood the dangerous of what was happening. Brazilians asked the military to protect Brazil from the insanity of Goulart. Inside the military from 1964 to 1985, different groups fought for power. In my opinion Brazil was sick since the time of Getulio Vargas and many presidents after him like Café Filho, Juscelino Kubitschek, Janio Quadros were responsible with Goulart and Vargas for the disgrace of the period. They were all populist and very corrupt. It is partly true the statement in your e-mail that almost everything that the military implemented worked in Brazil. They also had some failures like Trans-Amazonia, the control of technology, economical problems in the 1980’s and human rights violations. Most of these problems still exist in Brazil today, showing that the situation did not improve and may have gotten worse under the democratic presidencies.

Now, I remind you that the government of Figueiredo decided to return Brazil to democracy. The military group commanded by Figueiredo was against the involvement of the military in politics. Figueiredo never liked the job of President, most of the people working with him also did not like to be involved in politics. In general, I believe they were better in administrating Brazil than the governments of Jose Sarney, Fernando Collor, Itamar Franco, and Luiz I. Lula da Silva. Maybe not the first government of Fernando H. Cardoso.

I am always for democracy and I believe that the military should be maintained in its place, as Cicero used to say, "Let arms yield to the toga" but analyzing the situation in 1964 I do not see any other route that Brazil could have taken besides a military regime.

Regarding the use of public money and the millions spent by the government of Lula da Silva to pay “revolutionaries” that fought against the Brazilian government: I do not know if it is fair, I am not a judge and I believe that this kind of decisions should be left to them. What do you think of the judges, can we trust them? I am also in favor of paying the families of officers that were victims of Marxist terrorism. In my opinion they deserve more than the so called “revolutionaries”.

The crisis and violence in Brazil today: The violence in Brazil today is the responsibility of our ex-president and now senator Fernando Collor. I would like to remind you that one of the first things Collor did when he assumed power was to destroy the Brazilian central intelligence (SNI). Can you imagine such a thing, the US government closing the FBI and CIA? What Collor did was stupid and dangerous. He left Brazil without any central command of forces and no intelligence to fight criminal organizations. PCC would never have happened under the eye of the SNI. Fernando H. Cardoso tried to fix this problem by creating the current ABIN. It was too late, criminal organizations have dominated most levels of Brazilian society. I hope that they can improve fast.

The military today: The Brazilian military is currently very weak and under funded, we can hardly take on conflict with other countries in Latin America. If you read the magazine of the military club of Brazil (“Revista do Clube Militar”) you will see how sad the old generals and colonels are of the current situation of the military and Brazil. One thing is clear to me; the military officers in Brazil had very low levels of corruption compared to our politicians of today. Many of the generals are worse financially today than when they got into the military.

I may be wrong, but it is my honest opinion. I hope I helped answer your question.

Why Cuba is a democracy while the US is not - 1
written by Just an Observer, 2007-03-15 02:14:42

Well, just wait for about 5-7 years. Castro will be dead any day now, once he's gone it may take 5-7 years, then Cuba will open up to the american market. 20 years from today you will see McDonalds, new Chevrolets, Fords, and Cadillacs. You will more than likely see the comeback of the plush Casinos and clubs that existed there before Castro. MGM will be there, it will become another american territory.

....if you had a clue you would know where the truth lies, and yes the use of the term 'Al Qaeda' in reference to a global terrorist network was fabricated by US intelligence, fact. Bin Laden adopted the tag after it was introduced by the Americans.

If you're type could revert to only speaking actual facts, instead of stating outright lies that are easily proven to be so, you may prove to hold legitimate arguments.

It's normally not the "act" itself that gets people in trouble, it's the "lie" concerning it afterwards. As soon as your kind make these types of ludicrous statements, backed up by nothing but hot air, which is then easily proven to the contrary, you've defeated yourself, and everything else that you say becomes skeptical.

The first thing that comes to mind is that nobody is trying to break into Cuba that if anything they risk their lives to leave, how many thousands died at sea leaving this Democracy over the past fifty years.

What was Castro doing in Granada?

Who elects Castro?

How many people did Castro kill, butcher, murder, imprison over the last fifty years? Not last year or the year before, but over the last fifty.

If Cuba is this elysian field why does the world come by the millions to try and enter the U.S.A.?
This despotic imperial regime, that gives billions of dollars globally in humanitarian aid. How many millions of dollars in equipment, food to the Pakistani earthquake victims or the Sunami victims? Homany billions of dollars over the past fifty years has this despotic U.S. given to famin relief in Africa, what has Cuban democracy done over the past fifty years to relieve famine in the world.

Why cant the people of Cuba leave whenever they wish in this paradisical democracy?

The United States is a Republic, not a Democracy.

How many peoples lives did Cuba save in the genocides over the past 50 years? Bosnia, Rhwanda,Sudan?

What has Cuba done? What is Cuba? What is the quality of life in Cuba?

How does it compare to the quality of life in the U.S.?

You can call anything you want anyting you want. It is the reality on the ground the truth of daily life that determins the reality of the thing.

Castro remains El Castro because the people of Cuba want him to continue as the dictator, Castro knows best? The benificent dictator?

Your piece is well written, the language convincing, one would think from your words that the world would be clamoring for immigration to this Democracy of the people, for the people. But they do not. Why?

The quality of human life, Cuba is the size of Florida. What does Florida need to be in the world, but life in Florida is infinitely richer than life in Cuba. How is the food in Cuba?

The world was a different place fifty years ago, Russian tanks in Hungary, Gulags, millions incarcerated for crimes against the state.

Iraq was a Democracy, Hussein got 110% of the vote. Life was death in Iraq. A million people died in the Iraq Iran war.

Cuba libra, its time is coming and it will again dance and party and call it what you will, it is about the quality of life for all.

The Cuban community in Miami has made a fortune through dilligence and through applying themselves as they chose.

A Free Society is what the United States is about,a society of people that are simply free to shut their door if they choose, or take a jet anywhere in the world even Cuba, you can call it what ever you want, a Democracy, a Republic, a Cabal of the Inner Circle. But life is free in the United States and that is probably the most you can hope for in anyform of government call it what you will. 10,000 people calling a dog a horse does not make a dog a horse.

Only an idiot/s would say that terrorism did not exist before 9/11.
written by "Nob Jockey", March 15, 2007
Did I suggest that? We all know that historically the USA is the world’s largest terrorist organization. They've probably killed more innocents than the sum total of deaths attributable to every other despotic regime in the history of this planet. Your country was founded on the blood shedding of the innocent. You slaughtered the indigenous people of that continent without mercy just as your government has supported the slaughter of innocents across the globe by funding right wing dictators and fueling war through false flag operations and arms trading. Hell you are even responsible for the gassing of the Kurds, we all saw the hand shake. And lets not mention Nagasaki, though you’ll probably argue Hiroshima was necessary to end the war. I would rather be paranoid than deluded. Face it, your country is slipping into it’s own puddle of s**t and there is nothing you can do about it.

And as for you Al Qaeda quote pulled from wiki, lets be clear on the fact that you are now accepting Bin Laden on his word, you nonce. Think that one through for a minute. Look at the dates involved and also remember that Al Qaeda simply means ‘camp’. America created this myth because it needed a new enemy, and new wars to wage, after all, that’s what your economy has survived for quite some time now.

And, to cap it all off we are back to homophobia and Christianity, kind of validates some of the stuff already posted above. You represent the worst of America. Well done.

written by "Nob Jockey", March 15, 2007
Do you really think it's possible to prove any point here? All I can say is that the simplistic non-causal analysis of America’s role in global affairs is irritating in the extreme. Why are so many Americans in denial about the fact that they live on a planet that is abundant with interrelations and that it has been since societies first evolved? Also, banking, resource acquisition, and war are intimately tied, always have been, nation states, borders, sovereignty, international laws etc. are immaterial when it comes to the politics of today’s war corporatism, why is this so difficult to accept? Why can these people not accept that America is not the goody two shoes place they were educated to believe it is and accept that is as corrupt and twisted as any of the worst s**t holes on this planet? The only difference being America uses more sophisticated protocols. America is not exceptional in this regard, it just happens to be the latest and most highly evolved war monger on the planet. It lies it cheats, it kills, it steals, it does what it wants, natural, but it doesn't mean we have to like it. It's not the only country on the planet to function in this manner but it most certainly seems to be the worst offender right now. If you happen to reside inside US borders and are 'proud' to call yourself American, think about what that means for a minute, because like I said you've been brainwashed to believe a whole bunch of s**t about what your country stands for, when in actual fact the level of thought control and social manipulation is little different from that practiced by the Nazis. Oh, and by the way, who was Joseph Goebbels role model? Edward L. Bernays (Freud’s nephew) yep the Americans refined the art of mass manipulation using propaganda and the American government and various corporations have been successfully using it against its own people for about 100 hundred years now. Yes, you have been brain washed. Your state of denial will be difficult to escape but maybe if you started looking at the facts rather than the government approved versions of history you might start getting something right. Oh, but wait, didn't the government warn you about 'conspiracy' theories? Hmm, I wonder why that might be, they are probably just concerened about the mental well being of it's people; a field full of disturbed sheep is the last thing it needs when there are wars to wage and resources to acquire. But seriously, political affiliations aside, if you cannot accept that the majority of us are being screwed by lying, cheating, self interested public servants - who view us as 'consumers' rather than as citizens and answer only to the lobby groups paying the most money (invariably big business) - then what can I say? You are most obviously one of those capitalizing from this system in which case: f**k YOU

Loathing
written by aes, 2007-03-14 11:11:21

The objection is to 'universal loathing'. . . Sao Paulo had 10,000 demonstrators out of a population of 10,333,200 that hardly constitutes reason for your comment that Bush is 'almost universally loathed in Brazil.'

That I will agree with. Ten Thousand people showing up to demonstrate in my town would be huge but in a giant city the size of Sao Paulo it is rather small. While 10,000 protesters even in a Sao Paulo is not insignificant it is neither a spectacular size. And if 60% in Brazil by poll hold a negative view of Bush then that would many roughly 40% don't. All this combined together it would probably have been better (more accurate) for Foley to have not used the words "universally loathed" and to have stuck with something like, "Bush, who is disliked by the majority in Brazil."

Nonetheless, Foley put up a good article I thought and I did not get any "anti-American" propositions in it. U.S. Government historical involvement in Latin America is not all roses, there are some vary dark elements to that history - and it's memory is closer, and closer in generations, to Latin Americans today than slavery is to black Americans or the Holocaust to Jews.

Bo,

Nob Jockey is not me. It's your comments or implied assertions like this, premised upon a persons accusation of homophobia, that makes you look like a fool. Why? Because there are homosexuals, bisexuals, or gay rights activists all over the world. There are plenty in Europe and Brazil and also within the USA. Thus stating "I do not have any aliases, this is my only alias" is not per say a grammatical gaffe, however it does represent the predominant personality.

Adriana, it was a real pleasure to read your post. I hope you keep in contact.

I believe that we should see the eugenic movement as a scientific failure, and we should be alert to the dangerous of extreme views of science prospering in our society. I am more familiar with the work of Charles Darwin and Wallace, I do not believe that they were bad people, they were just trying to understand something new. Unfortunately their ideas were used by insane extreme leftist totalitarian regimes. Charles Darwin was constantly questioning himself. He indeed was very important for the development of all the marvelous things we found in the biological field in the last century.
Now, Nietzsche. He was the backbone of the Nazi idea. He was clearly insane, and I do not understand why people in Brazil and in Europe still discuss his ideas. I recommend you read a book by George Weigel called "The Cube and the Cathedral". In the book Weigel show us how the moral decadence in Europe of the 1800's lead to the creation of Fascist regimes. The sad part is that the European left is still pushing the same ideas of the Nazi. They are playing in dangerous territory and the West is losing its Judeo-Christian principles. Many Jewish and Christian intellectuals are uniting now to try to revert this dangerous that is building for our future. “Christophobia” is the new dangerous in Europe (J.H.H. Weiler, Jewish professor). The left in Europe is pushing everyday to break all Judeo-Christian principles of our civilization. I would like to note that the Jewish community is extremely concerned with the rise of “Christophobia” It is dangerous for both communities. I just read a comment by “Nob Jockey” in another article here that is a clear example of this dangerous and cancer in European society. The moment is now to end the support of the extreme lefties (both in America and Europe) to the Muslim radicals and immoral legislation. The extreme left always accused the Christians for the rise of Fascism, the historical facts show us the exact opposite, the extreme left was responsible and they still are.

A few quotes from “The Cube and the Cathedral”:

“Ultramundane humanism is inevitably inhuman humanism” Weigel

“It is not true, as is sometimes said, that man cannot organize the world without God. What is true is that, without God, he can only organize it against man.” Lubac

August 3, 1914: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.” Sir Edward Grey

1914 “everything tends toward catastrophe and collapse” as a “wave of madness has swept the mind of Christendom” Sir W. Churchill

“the Poles insisted that genuine revolution meant the recovery of lost spiritual and moral values” Pope John Paul II

“Europe’s passion brought the Continent to war in August 1914 – the Nietzschean will to power; a distorted sence of honor…” Weigel

“That crisis of moral reason led to a crisis of civilizational morale that is much with us today.” Weigel

Much to my chagrin I liked your writing. It is succinct and articulate. There was much truth in your analysis. Our lives spent buying and selling, meaningless loveless existences, coerced from kindergarden to the tit of consumerism. I am what I own, no longer I think therefore I am.
Again, well writ.

your retorts are weak, and we still have overt displays of homophobia, like I didn't invite you to stoop to that by choosing that alias?

Stoop? Who has to stoop?? It would be like me choosing the handle, "kiddie-f**ker". You really need to come to brazil E, as we've discussed before, they'd just love you here dressed up in your tranny outfit.

As far as homophobia, that implies fear. I don't fear fags, they disgust me, there is a difference. Although the definition of the word "homophobia" includes the word "antipathy", which certainly describes my feelings towards homos, "a natural, basic, or habitual repugnance", that pretty much sums it up.

Hence, it would take an idiot to make or imply a proposition that anyone that is not homopobic must be e harmony.

Plenty of non-homophobic people will post on Brazzil.com - the mathematical probability of it is very likely. You're just to stupid to realize.

E Pedophilia;

I live in brazil, it's full of queers. Do you think I'm not aware of the fact that there are numerous sick individuals in this world? You're only one of numerous.
I just read a comment by “Nob Jockey” in another article here that is a clear example of this dangerous and cancer in European society.

Really? Cancer in European society? that analysis coming from a Catholic neoconservative, get your head out of your ass. So questioning authority, demystifying religion, removing the smoke and mirrors, looking for truth in the face of endless lies, embracing peaceful discourse rather than engaging in religiously fueled prejudice and bigotry, all this is a cancer on society? Most of the unnecessary death and suffering throughout this planets history is the result of religious fervor and an irrational belief in one God or another. Religious absolutism is doing nothing for this planet except spreading ignorance and proliferating irrationality.

Now, Nietzsche. He was the backbone of the Nazi idea.

Oh my God! Why don't you study a little before saying nonsense? The Nazi used Nietzsche, in a very selective reading of it the same way they used anything that would support their movement, and they came many decades after Nietzsche was dead! There's absolutely nothing in his writings to do with Nazism.

A true backbone of Nazism is still present in the american culture today! The "one drop rule" that is religiously applied and believed! That originated truly from the racial theories of the past.

They are playing in dangerous territory and the West is losing its Judeo-Christian principles.

That's very scientific. The same judeo-christian principles were employed throughout the history to justify crusades, killings, persecution, etc. It's time for mankind to use reason and leave these irrational things in history books.

Jackass, WWW, which is the world wide web, would not exist without the internet. Americans invented the internet. Wow, for somebody that claims to be embracing peaceful discourse you are very fast in judging. First, I am Catholic, but I am of the bad kind, you know the ones that never go to mass and keep a distance. Lately, upon reflection I think I should go back, since people like you want to persecute us. Second, I am far from being labeled a Conservative, while in university I was against the Iraq war, and I was one of the very few students in my university in the US to protest against it in public. Again, after the demonstration of ignorance on the part of the left, every second I am closer to the "conservatives" and they seem to be correct. Third, I am very young, I am only 24 and I am a representation of the rebellion of my generation against a word without morals, Some of us detest what our parents did during the 1960's and 1970's. I do not want to scare you but the educated youth in America is getting closer and closer to the realization that the Left is destroying our civilization. Fourth, All my ideas come from careful reading of everything, from Marx to Friedman, from Saint Augustine to Voltaire. So, please do not tell me what you just said. My favorite sources are primary sources, I really like the smell of old paper and to see what people wrote by hand. It is much harder to get fooled by primary sources. Fifth, I have friends of all religions and nations, including Muslims, Hindus, Confucians, Christian Orthodox, Protestant and others. Almost all of us agree that the U.N. that you probably defend stinks. The United Nations today has become a playground of very few nations that want to screw one another. The United States or any other country will hardly pass anything in a security council with countries that only care for their own interest. I do not disagree that countries should fight for their interest. The United Nations should exist as a place of discussion not for creation of "international law". It is not democratic. Have you read the last speech of Kofi Annan about the "Clash of Civilizations", nasty! Demagogy. As for being a capitalist, I am sir. I am also a strong defender of the Arts and Crafts movement, that may tell you something about my personality. Please do not use the "f" word, I did not use it against you and I expect the same level of respect from you. Thank you. Ludwig

Rednecks and n****rs are the past
written by A brazilian, 2007-03-13 16:50:50

AES, I haven't been calling the "American Historian" a Black Nazi for such a long time if I didn't know the rednecks and the n****rs work together as team in the US in order to keep that country as racially backwards as it can be. There would be no way such a thing could exist without the cooperation from all of them. And, Tom Dooley, the 19th century called, they want their racial theories back! You are not offending anyone by using eugeniticist terms such as "stock", you are showing the world that you are n****r serving the rednecks in this s**thole you live in.

Let's see, that low-IQ-inbred-genetic-trash, with Bo being a fine example of that, can only barely speak their own language. And that's because they are monolingual, and english is the only language they are supposed to know! Stupid bastards! The very word "n****r" is latin for "black", but MISPELLED! Ignorant dumbf**ks! The dumbest of the dumb, a.k.a rednecks, moved out of Europe en masse to the US, they weren't only dumb but demonstrated irrational affection for racial theories, which, for their bad luck, prevented good genes from ever coming in. And the inbreeder characteristics only contributed to their further decaying.

Now, after all the prejudice and hatred we witnessed against brazilians and Brazil, calling us of things many times worse than "n****r" you will act "hurt". F**K YOU! Nobody is helping nobody in here! Chicken, continue until the end with your hatred! Come on! Are you changing the subject now that you are being offended? What a bunch of pussies! And, losers, I already told you a thousand times, there's only one "A Brazilian", you are making such thing of "many under one nickname" because you hate to admit that the world hates you for the son of bitches you are.

Margaret, unfortunately the "empire whose borders are the world" doesn't exist and will never exist if it's up to americans, BECAUSE YOU ARE A BUNCH OF MOTHERF**KING BIGOTS! You can't even accept the honest people search for work in your own country, rednecks are yelling for kicking them out. You can't accept anything american that doesn't look blonde, or else you start labeling them as something "different". The empire of the world is a only of magolamanic drooling americans that have no clue about how big and diverse the world is, you are so f**king intellectually poor and such natural segregationists that keeping the world as "one" is impossible. You can't count beyond 5, that's why fastfood stores make such simple meals you can select by the number!

YOU ARE IMPERMEABLE.

I really wish all the rednecks' dream would come true. I wish the US government would kick all the immigrants out, and jobs would be given through american inheritance, because Indians, Chinese or anybody else aren't "true americans". The world would laugh and your businesses would be so not competitive in the world stage it would be pitiful! Then you would learn the hard way that you need the rest of the world.

In the other hand, as for the mixed people that are oppressed in the US I would suggest you research about the anthropophagic movement. Learn the beauty of it, and its anti-imperialistic and multicultural nature! You will soon identify with it and learn that it's the first truly globalized culture. We, metaphorically, eat people, therefore absorb them. We are free to be who we want to be and, as would Tom Dooley say, they are now part of our stock. They are all brazilians, no prefixes. Then good luck, multiracial americans, in building a truly country of the future there!

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT.

The first eaten were the portuguese, then the africans, then the germans, then the italians and spanish, then the japanese, etc. And be sure, the americans will be eaten the same way. You believe you are conquering the world with your culture, but we have seen it a lot of times before. Against Goethe and the mother of the greeks!

Nietzsche said to fight only glorious people, so their glory will be yours. Isn't it a bit anthropophagic, absorbing others qualities? The insistence of some americans to portray their enemies as inferiors tells a lot, but not about their enemies.

Rednecks and n****rs, you are the past.

That about tells it all Abe, and FYI, the word n-i-g-g-e-r is not the word black in latin. In english we also have the word NEGRO, as you do, spelled exactly the same. The word you used is the biggest racist, discrimatory word a person can use in regards to other black people in english speaking countries.

really like the smell of old paper and to see what people wrote by hand. It is much harder to get fooled by primary sources
written by "Nob Jockey", March 15, 2007
Primary sources? What like the Bible? What’s primary about that source? Let’s not go there. I grew up in a Catholic country. I've seen first hand the damage inflicted by that church, and I'm not going to get into listing it's failings because they have received plenty of publicity. You can ask me to read a book written by a fervent Catholic neoconservative, but sorry I will not, it does not interest me in the least. I could ask you to read The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins (and no I am not a disciple) but it amounts to the same thing. But can I ask you what first hand knowledge you have of Europe? Do you know how many countries there are on that continent (including those adjacent to it) and how diverse the various cultures are? This Europe on the road to hell analysis is far too simplistic. It cannot not possibly take into account the variety of attitudes and ideologies that exist across Europe; it is myopic in the extreme. These organized religious establishments cannot tolerate diversity of thought and action. People are entitled to be free to think for themselves and decide what they want and reach an understanding of reality based on unbiased empiricism. And, if someone wants to explore a more metaphysical side to life they should be free to do so without having to enter a patriarchal religious hierarchy that monopolizes access to divine channels. If someone chooses to believe in God, they should know that God is free, God does not care about the color of your skin, the language you speak, or the church you belong to, the universe embraces all, unity in diversity. Factionalism divides humanity; it serves no purpose in this age. If the various religions and governments on this planet stopped trying to manipulate people and force agendas they believe are good for us, humanity might actually start to shine. Retreating towards a dying religion is not the solution to your sense of disenfranchisement. And believe me, no one is trying to persecute you, there are more pressing issues than having to deal with a few depressed Catholics.

Be careful what you are doing here in the site of brazzil.com is illegal in the USA and Brasil. I would recommend that you write an apology to all the people you offended here. Including Bo that has a multiracial family (correct?) and the American Historian.

Seriously,

You didn't offend anyone?? By using the "N" word?? Are you f**king serious?? American Historian left the site for good. Maybe you're glad about that, the reason is you used a word that is one of if not the worst, racist, words in the english language.

nig·ger /ˈnɪgər/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[nig-er] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
—Usage note The term n****r is now probably the most offensive word in English. Its degree of offensiveness has increased markedly in recent years, although it has been used in a derogatory manner since at least the Revolutionary War.

noun
1.Slang: Extremely Disparaging and Offensive.
a.a black person.
b.a member of any dark-skinned people.

Now Abe, I'm really getting tired of your rhetoric. For someone that has stated that racism doesn't exist in brazil, how can you call someone a nig-ger? If I had the time I'd put someone on top of this, and you'd have some legal consequences over that one.

Have you actually taken a good hard look at who is responsible for proliferating this nonsense? What exactly is this great nebulous mass you call 'the left'? Again, it sounds like another over simplification in the extreme. Life is infinitely more complex than you appear to think it is. You drop all these names of great thinkers but you don’t appear to have done any great thinking yourself.

You're comical. You say you didn't offend anyone, then it's pointed out that Historian left this site specifically because of your post using the "N" word, you then don't respond to that fact. You're told you used racial slurs, you deny it, you say, "look at the context".

Man Abe, you are one lost child. I'm 100% certain you're one of those idiot, ignorant college students that thinks he's being cool, can speak some english, but has no idea what many things mean as well as their gravity.

Give up, the text is clear. See the part that I said:

And, Tom Dooley, the 19th century called, they want their racial theories back!

That was because Tom Dooley said the americans were "better racial stock" than brazilians. In an eugenics sense.

Let's see, that low-IQ-inbred-genetic-trash, with Bo being a fine example of that, can only barely speak their own language.

That was because of your posts and those from ch.c, along with others that added little to the conversation except prejudice against Brazil.

Margaret, unfortunately the "empire whose borders are the world" doesn't exist and will never exist if it's up to americans, BECAUSE YOU ARE A BUNCH OF MOTHERF**KING BIGOTS!

This is a reference to another post where Margaret pasted an "empire whose borders are the world" referring to the United States. And I just expressed the truth because you can't even live in the same country and consider each other equal. You can people prefixes and come to this site to discuss the "racial" situation in Brazil when in fact you have so much bigotry and racism in yourselves.

In the other hand, as for the mixed people that are oppressed in the US I would suggest you research about the anthropophagic movement. Learn the beauty of it, and its anti-imperialistic and multicultural nature!... he first eaten were the portuguese, then the africans...

This was a reference to the people that complained about black racism in the US. A suggestion for them to learn about how a country can be multicultural. This is not unfamiliar to scholars, you know.

Nietzsche said to fight only glorious people, so their glory will be yours.

This is an idea present in many different cultures.

Rednecks and n****rs, you are the past.

This is a reference to thousands of posts and many articles about the end of "white" and "black" due to the aforementioned cultural phenomena. The mixing will end it, and both rednecks and n****rs will be a thing of the past.

AES, I haven't been calling the "American Historian" a Black Nazi for such a long time if I didn't know the rednecks and the n****rs work together as team in the US in order to keep that country as racially backwards as it can be.

I mean s**t son, that's downright KKK s**t right there. Take away the word redneck, and you're the Imperial Wizard in Alabama back in the 1950's!

you are showing the world that you are n****r serving the rednecks in this s**thole you live in.

You just don't get it Abe. It would be like me, or others, calling brazilians "monkeys", over, and over, and then trying to justify it. Calling a brazilian "monkey" must be extremely derogatory, as it's against the law here in brazil. It seems ridiculous to americans, but obviously you don't see it as ridiculous in brazil. You were speaking english, to americans, among others, and calling black american "nig-gers", Abe, that's against the law, and as I told you before, and I know what I'm talking about, I have numerous black friends in the U.S., if you would say that to the face of a black american you better be prepared to defend yourself.

Primary sources? What like the Bible? What’s primary about that source? Let’s not go there. I grew up in a Catholic country.

I will ignore the comment; it is not fair to discuss it here.

You can ask me to read a book written by a fervent Catholic neoconservative, but sorry I will not, it does not interest me in the least. I could ask you to read The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins (and no I am not a disciple) but it amounts to the same thing.

I did not read his book but I did read a few articles, I can not comment on the book without reading it, it is unethical...

This Europe on the road to hell analysis is far too simplistic. It cannot not possibly take into account the variety of attitudes and ideologies that exist across Europe; it is myopic in the extreme.

I agree that it is not simplistic, I never said that the situation in Europe is simplistic and Weigel never said that, please read the book if you want to comment on it.

But can I ask you what first hand knowledge you have of Europe? Do you know how many countries there are on that continent (including those adjacent to it) and how diverse the various cultures are?

Of course, a pleasure to answer. I am Italian, born in Brazil. I live in North America but I do vote (Referendum and National elections) and follow to the best of my ability everything that goes on in Europe, I just returned from Italy a few weeks ago. I read news from Portugal, Italy (mostly Corriere), England (BBC, The Economist, The Times) and Germany (DW in English). I have a lot of pride in what Europe built. Most writers considered the source of our civilization, I do my best to read them.

I agree, never disagreed with that, and I do not accept people that do not respect these principles. True Christians or Jewish would never accept a totalitarian regime. (Radical Islam, Catholic Radicals, Protestant Radicals and all other forms of totalitarian views)

Factionalism divides humanity; it serves no purpose in this age. If the various religions and governments on this planet stopped trying to manipulate people and force agendas they believe are good for us, humanity might actually start to shine.

I disagree with the idea of Universalism I believe that we are different and we should learn to live together but lets not forget that we come from different traditions (Ask a Chinese, an Arab or an Indian if they approve this idea of universalism). Multiculturalism yes, but not the excess that we are seeing in Europe today. In Brazil, the black people have a saying that goes like this: "Quem anda em terras alheias Pisa no chão devagar", This is a bad translation but here it goes: If you stand in anothers land you should be quiet and not disturb. If you want to live in a different country you should respect their traditions and their laws. If not, you should move out. The same saying goes to immigrants that do not respect the laws and traditions in the USA and Canada. I am an immigrant and I do recognize that. Respect! Express yourself: yes, break the laws and traditions: no. I also believe that most Europeans are using the USA as a scapegoat, the Americas are a part of our civilization and we are in debt with them in our brotherhood.

Retreating towards a dying religion is not the solution to your sense of disenfranchisement. And believe me, no one is trying to persecute you, there are more pressing issues than having to deal with a few depressed Catholics.

Oh, I am very worried. I have a responsibility to keep our traditions. I own it to Shakespeare, Dante, Plato, Cicero, Aquinas and many others, even to Voltaire, Luther and Franklin. Without mentioning my family and my fellow countrymen. If I return to the Church it will be an end to my true philosophical principles and not to piss you or the left, do not worry. Our principles have to stand, no matter what.

Now, I ask you the same question, where are you from? What do you think? I will really appreciate an answer.

Thank you for your answer.
- Moronans Americanus a*****eas -
written by Costinha, March 16, 2007
Pronunciation: Moronaaans Ameeeericanuuuuus Asssssholeaaaaaaas

Species: Blood thirsty mutated organisms.

Habitat: Polluted areas of North America, known to thrive under acid rain conditions and in its own excrement!

Food: Mainly peanut butter, hamburgers and french fries. These animals do not usually exercise any manners but instead, use raw hands to devour eatable substances. Abundance of lard reserves are quite common among these savages.

Adaptation: Namely rejected by all others beans on the planet. However, they are expanding their territory thru intimidation and killings, during the latter portion of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century.

Behavior: Cowardly when singled out but vicious when in packs. Not yet known but inferred that metamorphosis occur at the DNA level of these creatures due to prolonged exposure to radioactive materials, set up by their own armies.

Caution: Stay way, these mammals are known to have huge mouths and very narrow minds, with an average IQ comparable to those of chimpanzees. In fact, these animals recently brought to power a specimen that parallels any ape, better known as George Bush.

Short-Coming: Unilingual, lacking any understanding of civilization and order, and driven by pure greed.
It is all about freedom
written by A brazilian, March 16, 2007
I stand for every word in that text and I invite everyone to read it. This is something about freedom for people to be what they want to be, and about enpowerment through cultural absorption.

The very core of it is about "cultural modification", but in a directed and controlled manner. Not by being forced by external forces out of your control, but by willingly and selectively absorbing cultures. This is the way of the cannibal.

If you see things this way, this is the most anti-imperialistic idea ever, because the "empire" would be eaten. It wouldn't inflict anything, but instead it would be passive and our food. And also it shows a bit of the blending of all cultures in one, therefore it will be the end of the road to both "rednecks" and "n****rs".

Oops, I said it once again. smilies/smiley.gif n****rs? This word is the one forbidden word?

This is not related to your discussion with the other poster, but I just wanted to point it out. This is typical. Europeans and the US are part of one brotherhood, according to some, while the rest of the world is not, and the rest is black because of it. This is exactly what I stand against, not about what you think of course, but about the victimization some want to inflict in our society. There are hidden agendas behind it, and usually it has to do with racial theories of the 19th century.

Brazilians are too naive to recognize such things, but some do and accept it, just like you did (considering that you are brazilian after all). I have learned to praise Brazil every day more eversince I started learning about the world, despite of all problems I think we have something nobody else has. This culture kick ass! The plurality of it is beautiful.

I disagree with you Ric. First this is not "my idea" or "my view", this is very old and it was celebrated by many others before me. See, it's not about me, it's about millions of people.

About the "hate" part, everyone that wants to see hate will see it. It doesn't need to exist, it's only that hate serves their purposes so they will see it either way. I think any intelligent person is capable of reading it and understanding it, despite of your attempts of disqualifying it, like calling the "Oswald the Andrade" from the week of modern art of the 20s a "loser".

This is why I say this people is greatly underestimated. Your response was emblematic of the general ignorance about Brazil. Now go on with the discussions about "racial issues" you love so much, you are sterile and wouldn't ever come up with anything that doesn't involve death or hate.

People may or may not agree, may ot may not know, may or may not further research about it, but that doesn't matter. What matters is that it exists today in this part of the world I live in, and that's the closest thing to an identity we have. Although around these lands it's impossible to nail down in narrow terms an "identity" the same way people do in the US.

As or you Tom Dooley, whatever, I have the sense you are just trying to joke, especially for "Neutche". He doesn't exist and I only cited him, I didn't explain anything.

written by "Nob Jockey", March 16, 2007
You will have to forgive me for not discussing this, and in doing so accept your definition of me as 'universalistic' for the sake of argument. I don’t think ones race, country of origin, religion (or particular traditional adherence) requires stating; these are interesting features but they are not as important as we are conditioned to believe they are. We share the same planet, breathe the same air, idiosyncratic features stem from variations in societal conditioning. They should be transcended if genuine communication is ever expected to be achieved. What you see as being a negative development I see as absolutely unavoidable, if mankind is going to progress in it's thinking. Evolution is unending; you cannot fight the processes of change that are taking place. Globalization is changing the face of our planet forever, there is no turning back, and as the cliché goes 'resistance is futile'. Monumental changes are taking place, they are necessary changes, difficulties lie ahead, but again they are entirely necessary if we are expected to evolve as a species. You forget that throughout the ages humanity has been subjected to repression of one form or another, only relatively recently has genuine freedom of thought started to develop. You seem to think this is a bad thing, you view it as retrogressive and morally redundant; you seem to have very little faith in our world and the people who inhabit it. This stems from your Catholic view of man as an inherently sinful creature. This is an erroneous and dangerous belief. As I said I have first hand experience of Catholicism, I know it intimately and understand the minds it produces; they all share the same fatalistic flaws. You sound as if you would be happier living in the middle ages. Despite the problems of our age it is all to easy to forget the benefits we enjoy. In a different age Church state institutions would have killed those who dissented. I would be burned as a heretic. But today we face a situation where we have many people who (if were it not for the rule of law) would watch me burn for what I have said here. They are the people you should be worried about. The ones who relish watching mankind being “punished for it’s sins”, the ones who wish doom upon us all, the ones who cheer the crisis in the Middle East – viewing it as some kind of prophetic inevitability when in actuality they are attempting to force the fulfillment of a prophecy by behaving in such a manner (and in America, don’t forget the lobbying power they possess). Fear those who seek to “punish us for our sins” because they are dangerous, irrational creatures, with tiny minds and fear in their hearts; deeply insecure and deeply disturbed. I have hope for mankind because I believe we are inherently good beings with immense potential for doing positive things and achieving good in the world but this will only happen when manipulation, exploitation, and repression ceases. Despite the troubles we face a new day is dawning.

They should be transcended if genuine communication is ever expected to be achieved. What you see as being a negative development I see as absolutely unavoidable, if mankind is going to progress in it's thinking.

I am sorry but I do not see it as a ‘negative development’. I agree that globalization is changing the face of our planet. Look at Europe, it is nothing new, Europe has been in the process of “globalization” for more than two thousand years, actually even longer. Think about it, The British would not drink tea if the Portuguese had not brought it from the orient, today it is an English tradition, but not native. Look at Venice, Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, London and other major trade towns in Europe. To deny change is to deny Western civilization in its core. Judeo-Christianity and Classical thought had been the center of this culture for two thousand years. We are what we are today because of what happened in our past. There is no “New age” or any form of new culture. Even the ones that think they are creating something new are just building on our past. Picasso for example wanted to break the line of artistic development that was happening since the renaissance. He tried to import his esthetics from Africa, but if you analyze it closely you will see that it is not African but European in its ideas. He did that because something happened in our civilization; in this case anarchism and communism. The question should be how hard do we push these changes? The European left clearly want to have this done in a few decades. I disagree, I think that this is a recipe for disaster; I believe we should not push it, it will come to us naturally. It may take two thousand years, I do not care. If we push it, we will have a real “clash of civilizations”. I believe we have to recognize our differences and work from there and not try to ignore our differences and try to fix the problem quickly. Ex-secretary general Kofi Annan and UN employees want it done fast.

I don’t think ones race, country of origin, religion (or particular traditional adherence) requires stating; these are interesting features but they are not as important as we are conditioned to believe they are. We share the same planet, breathe the same air, idiosyncratic features stem from variations in societal conditioning.

I accept the principles of the Declaration of Human Rights, I do this because I am western (using this term culturally). How far would we go to implement it? The traditions that delivered the Declaration of Human Rights are clearly western. How can we force it on other civilizations? The 'West' (North and South America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand) is currently multiracial, has a very similar culture, and accept different points of view. For us it is very easy to implement and understand the principles in the Declaration of Human Rights. If we apply the Declaration of Human Rights on the Chinese, Indians and Muslims we would create a major world war. Think about this, Islam is breaking the Human Rights everyday, look at how they treat their women and children; they have no freedom of religion or of thought. I ask you, should we make them accept OUR principles or we wait for them to accept these same principles by themselves. What do you think? If we apply your 'universalistic' idea we will have trouble. I do not know if you had the opportunity of reading "Clash of Civilizations" by Professor Samuel Huntington, he mention this very clearly in his book. Other civilizations are growing fast. The question now is: What do we do? What are we?

You forget that throughout the ages humanity has been subjected to repression of one form or another, only relatively recently has genuine freedom of thought started to develop. You seem to think this is a bad thing, you view it as retrogressive and morally redundant; you seem to have very little faith in our world and the people who inhabit it.

No, I do not forget that. What genuine freedom? What is freedom? Are we talking about the freedom of Rousseau, Ockham or Aquinas/Aristotle? I always believed in the last one as the true freedom. I repeat, to be against freedom of thought is to be against Christianity. I do not have ‘little faith’ in the world, I am just realistic and recognize that we live in a very dangerous world.

To define Christianity or Catholicism in these terms is truly ‘simplistic’. The Catholic Church had many difficulties in its history, different periods, different lines of thought. Different individuals from St. John to St. Thomas of Aquinas, St. Francis to Martin Luther. I told you before I was never educated inside the Catholic Church, my parents never went to Church and always gave me total freedom to choose if I wanted to go. I was not educated by Jesuit priests. I will repeat what I said before, all my lines of thought came from pure philosophical pursuit. I would fit better in the age of reason than in the middle ages. Even tough I admire the latter the most. The age of reason was very immoral in my opinion. I see history as a line of many things happening. (opposed to nature in itself cyclical) If A and B did not happen we would have never had C. You may believe that the middle ages were not important but in reality it is just another brick in our history. No past, no present.

"Judge not lest ye be judged." And Free will. Thank the Judeo-Christian for this one. How can I cheer for the crisis in the Middle East, quiet the opposite. To cheer for it would be more in line with Nietzsche and not my school of thought. Regarding the lobbying power, I will be happy to destroy all lobbies including the strongest of all, the liberal lobby machine.

Despite the troubles we face a new day is dawning

Of course, it is always a new day just look at the sky in the morning, for billions of years. Oh, history.

One last example for you: Tolstoy (Christian) influenced Gandhi (Hindu) that influenced Martin Luther King Jr. (Christian) All of them professed a Christian idea. Remember, Human Rights.

Good night.

This dualistic non-sense is what blinds you. You can't escape the simplistic "us vs. them" or "good vs. evil", why would the Islam be breaking the human rights everyday? Such a broad and simplistic affirmation is so ludicrous. They are people, and the same way some powerful people abuse their power in order to get what they want there, it also happens here. People are always abusing of their power. Do you want a recent example of such behavior from christians? The whole story of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, they lied to the world and used their own people for profit.

Why do you consider others to be, a priori, beast-like? I am sure they can use reason, otherwise they would be hanging in trees.

The politics of middle east are so entangled and "the West" has its hands so dirty that criticizing Islam for whatever backwardness is evidence of complete ignorance. Many of those dictators and terrorists received support from "the West", from "our civilization", and now the Islam is guilty? How?

I have to say I disagree 100% with everything you have written. It looks more like a regurgitation without the proper critical analysis than a proper philosophy. The ability of understand is not memorizing facts alone (assuming that you actually read Plato, Aristotle, etc, as you stated), but of contextualizing information, relating it with other data and making something useful of it, even in philosophy.

Words hard to hear
written by Heartland of US, March 16, 2007
The original article appeared to be well written, easy to understand and words hard for this American to hear. But the truth, we don't want to hear, is that we (specifically our American leaders) are not well liked in many areas of the world. Yet when we hear it, we first seek to rebute all that seems to be opinion. You see, opinions can be challenged, because they are just that; opinions. That a majority of a particular country or region, or polling venue seems to agree means nothing to us, we simply find it hard to understand how others cannot love us.
And yet, there it is folks, not everyone loves us, or our leader, and hard as it might be to swallow, duck before it hits you in the face. Truth of the matter is, President Bush is not well liked here in the US either but we tolerate him because he is our president and arguably the most powerful man in the world. And if we cannot get rid of him for 2 more years, we have to live with him.
Brazil, and its people, are partners with the United States and we should gracefully embrace them, thier idealogies, and thier culture as a part of the world--wide dialogue. We may not like all that we hear but we should darn well respect it.
Good article, well written, and most importantly; understood.

I hardly think these are good examples. Cobain is not old enough to be considered part of the generation you refer (besides he was troubled manic depressive who had deep misgivings about his life as a 'celebrity' ). Can't say I was ever a fan, nor was I ever a fan of Dylan’s. You are intentionally deflecting attention away from the advances that were made in terms of civil liberties, women’s rights, ecological awareness, comparative religious studies, not to mention developments in the arts, and instead you point towards the more pedestrian and mundane features of this period namely pop culture. I fail see how anyone can castigate the activities of an entire generation and view it all as degenerative, this ignores the fact that there were many positive contributions made.

The traditions that delivered the Declaration of Human Rights are clearly western
written by "Nob Jockey", March 16, 2007
I disagree, examples of ideological suppositions that mirror the philosophical foundations of this declaration is evidenced in the belief systems of cultures found across this planet and in those that have existed at various times throughout the ages. Of course there are details given which relate specifically to the capitalistic age we live in but the ideals presented are not exclusive to so-called Western thinking. It should be accepted that there are observable universal truths, this is undeniable, the law of causality being one of the most important. Suffering begets suffering and no one wants to suffer. It does not take a great deal of intelligence to understand the principles of cause and effect. In observing the laws that function in a tangible reality we can learn a great deal about morality. Religion is damaging to humanity when individuals function outside of the system of natural law; when they start to formulate ideologies based on notions of divine providence, and when they start constructing spiritual hierarchies based upon the notion of the supremacy of one group of individuals over another. What is the solution? Simple: education, freedom of unbiased information, and yes, like it or not, secularism. People are capable of finding their way in life but they need to be given the freedom to decide what way that is from day one of their existence. They just need to be given the freedom to learn without agendas being imposed upon them by government, religion, peers, friends, family. Conditioning of one form of another is inevitable but when this process of growth and development is twisted and warped by virulent forms of indoctrination - that serve only to remove individual freedom of choice - the individual suffers. If the individual suffers as a consequence of these actions, society suffers, if society suffers, humanity suffers because progress will be stifled. Obviously ‘humanity’, if viewed as a single entity, is in its infancy, we still need the rule of law and systems of governance but that does not mean that the mechanisms we currently have are the most effective or that they are serving humanity as best they can. Greed and ignorance abound. But how long can this last? Yes, the changes may take 2000 years, but if it were possible to wait, it would be something worth waiting for. In the meantime we have a responsibility to do what we can in the present to see that our personal suffering and the suffering of others is alleviated.

written by "Nob Jockey", March 16, 2007
Are you implying that Catholicism and Christianity are one and the same? You referred to yourself as Catholic not as Christian. As with the philisophical basis of The Human Rights Declaration the philosophical teachings of Jesus of Nazareth were not new (some commentators have speculated that his lost years were spent roaming India) . In fact many of his teachings have direct antecedents in Vedic, Buddhist and Taoist thought. Vedic and Taoist thinking pre-date Christianity by many thousands of years. Recent analysis of bricks found in the Gulf of Cambay have been dated to 7500BC and point to what may be remains of a pre-Harappan city; this implies that Vedic theology may be at least 10,000 years old. Ancient ways of knowing have been informing philosophical thought for longer than many of us can imagine (or want to imagine in some cases).

Yes, Cobain is not part of the generation of the 60’s and 70’s, he is the result of it. Cobain used to tell everybody that he hated the “hippies” (his parents) He used to say that when he was a child they destroyed his life for egoistic reasons. This is my point regarding Cobain. It is true all over the western world. The generation of the 60’s and 70’s indeed had a lot of good people, but the choices that some took at the time is killing us slowly. I am talking here about the moral standards of our society that were broken; the most destructive of all was the destruction of the FAMILY. Every little action has a consequence we have to discuss it with reason and not only push an agenda that will lead to total anarchy.

I mentioned Dylan (Big fan) because he was considered “the voice of his generation”. Dylan always had an inclination to philosophy and he looked for an answer to what was going on in the western world. In the end he became closer and closer to the Judeo-Christian ideas, and he converted to Christianity and became closer with many Jewish leaders. Today, he is very quiet about his ideas.
"The world was absurd ... I had very little in common with and knew even less about a generation that I was supposed to be the voice of," Dylan says.
"I was fantasising about a nine-to-five existence, a house on a tree-lined block with a white picket fence, pink roses in the backyard.
"Roadmaps to our homestead must have been posted in all 50 states for gangs of dropouts and druggies.
"I wanted to set fire to these people," Dylan recollects, saying the hordes of fans who turned up at his family home in Woodstock and walked over his roof or tried to break-in drove him and his family to seek refuge in New York.

I never said that this generation had no positive contributions. I am also against the use of pop culture to make a point but I used both because they were important and central figures of both generations. So, the examples are valid, since they can be seen all over. Regarding the art of the period, for me it is nothing more than garbage, personal opinion after four years in art school. If you like it, I respect that.

Your Cobain/Dylan fixation is not worth commenting on. Seriously, the totemic power you attribute to these two individuals really underlines the absurdity of your position. Please pick something with a little more substance to demonstrate your point because I have no interest in a pop star who was touted by the press as "the voice of his generation", that is what you call hype. He was one of many folk singers with a social conscience; arguably he managed to capture the zeitgeist, but he was hardly as insightful or prophetic as Mc Luan. Also, I said "the arts" i.e. literature, cinema, theatre, music, visual art. I hardly think having undergraduate knowledge of visual art entitles you to dismiss the collective artistic contributions of this period. Regarding Vedic philosophy are you disputing its antiquity? Most likely your understanding of the Vedic tradition is derived from works of scholarship originating in the west, much of which was written in the early nineteen hundreds (and further studies were built upon some of the erroneous literature that was produced during this period). Many of the inaccuracies that existed were not addressed until more recently. A number of prominent Indian academics have done much to provide a revisionist historical perspective. I only know this because I once made the mistake of trying to tell a woman from Calcutta about her history and was very quickly made aware of my historical prejudices. When I took the time to look into this it became clear how wrong my understanding was. What is disturbing about this is that the version of Indian history I had was taken from the background to India provided in a well know series of travel guides. So how many others are likewise misinformed because someone hasn't done their research?

Well in English Liturature the backround of the writer is vital to the understanding of the text. For example the 'mad hatter of Alice In Wonderland. The hatters of England at the time were using mecuric oxide to form the felt of the hates and as a consequence developed mecuric poisoning, and thus the expression 'mad as a hatter'. To understand the historical, geographical, personal data of the author enables greater understanding for unless it is poesie it is impossible to ascertain meaning only probability of meaning. I mean I dont really give a f**k where you're from, I know where your from, by how you think and how you write, the words, logic syntax and passions (feelings) that you infuse in your writing not so much by intent but by nature. Nob Slobber as for myself I never had the intention nor the desire to quote any bible quotes. Your writing, attitude, and childish manipulation, however brought out what preferred to be dormant. You are very transparent. You are very proud of what you have achieved in your life, you feel sophisticated, preeminent, you quote what others have written, and you heap onto yourself old knowledge of the failures of others. You prove the point quite well “There is nothing new under the sun.” Furthermore you best portray the spirit of the Anti-Christ. You understand religion but you do not understand Christ.

Here chew on this: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself

Here is the answer to humanities social problems.

However humanity wants to put and end to transgression by eliminating GODS law.
"For where no law is, there is no transgression". Then you can justify your debauchery! Moreover you want to dominate humankind and number them and control them, your answer to utopia.

Human kind is not a group to be controlled, humankind is made of individuals who are given free will to decide, not to be forced by Utopia builders who are even less qualified than those they enslave.

So as individuals if we "love thy neighbour as thyself" then can we come closer to putting an end to humanities problems.

For someone as enlightened as you assume to be, you ignore real wisdom and philosophy. You prefer the wisdom of man over GOD, how sad. The bible itself has weathered the ages, enlightened one, have you ever wondered why?

If you want to debate Socrates, why not go to a forum that is debating Socrates?

I've alluded to this earlier in relation to Catholisicm, in breif this refers to the imperfect nature of man which stems from the idea of origanl sin. Man will be forever bogged down in the material world (the world of illusion, Satans realm) unless he embraces the aspect of his being that resides in the realm of Christ. We are all divided beings. We has a choice to either walk on the path of rightiousness or slip into Satans embrace, the pleasures of the senses, the material, the transitory (as opposed to every lasting life). This is a common feature of many belief systems, althought the symbolic elements vary. It is basically dealing with the duality of being from a Christain perspective. We all face this struggle irrespective of our religious beliefs.

Thank you Giuseppe R., some people clearly did not understand your message. I got it, and I have this to say. Yes, not only in Italy but all over Europe this is happening, the governments of the left are over taxing us everywhere. These idiots think that they can use our money to promote their demagogy world wide. Mr. Giuseppe I have friends in these countries of Europe: Ireland, Great Britain, Italy, Spain, France and Germany. Most of us recognize that the left (yes, we do have an entity with similar ideas called the 'left') governments that dominated European politics in the last decades, created unemployment and we can not find jobs in Europe anymore. I was talking to a friend of mine from Sevilha, Spain and he was telling me that he is 30 years old and he can not find a decent job, do you know why? The government of Spain prefers to overtax people and create a welfare state just like Italy. In all the countries I mentioned the same story is happening and that is why the 'left' is losing ground. Read the news, they are losing elections everywhere. We the new generations go to school for years, we get out, and they try to pay us 750 euros a month, they prefer to spend the money giving it to immigrants that "break" the law. Now, if you compare to what the American and Canadian youth get paid, it ends up being ridiculous. The dream of most of our youth in Europe is to immigrate to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, US and other countries. I did that and this society here is an example to us. Countries that we do not have communists, socialists and the so called ex-communists ruling us. Do you know what the favorite past time of this 'sinistra' is? Blame the USA for our problems, the same as their friends in Latin America do. They are smart, but not that smart, because we know what is going on, we the youth look at the paycheck in the end of the month and realize the reality. USA the scapegoat. I was reading just now something that relates to what I have been saying here and because I said it, people said I am a "Conservative Catholic", you see, they have no idea. The Catholic Church in Italy is normally united with the left and not the right (Destra), Correct?

My point in this discussion was to show that Europe is based in the Judeo-Christian tradition.

Here a few words of German Chancellor Angela Merkel:

"Europe is not a 'Christian club', as some would like to say. But Europe is founded on values that are clearly grounded in the Christian vision of humanity," said Merkel.

"As Pope John Paul II said, it is God's will that Germany and Poland are neighbours. As neighbors, we have a duty and responsibility to live well together," she said.

The Pope Spreads AIDS
written by Plug logic, March 17, 2007
The Holy Father is responsible for the deaths of thousands

By George Monbiot. Published in the Guardian 7th October 1999.

The evidence stacking up against Pope Pius XII is compelling. The man who claimed to be the friend of the persecuted now emerges as an active Nazi collaborator. John Cornwell, a Catholic historian who had hoped to clear Pius’s name by examining the Vatican’s archive, has discovered instead that the pope helped Hitler to stamp out opposition in the German Church. He disbanded the Catholic Centre Party (one of Hitler’s main impediments), encouraged priests to “certify” converted Jews and helped persuade the Catholic Prime Minister to form an alliance with the Nazis. In response to these revelations, the Vatican, as if to prove that it inhabits another planet, has announced that it will proceed with its plans to declare Pope Pius XII a saint.

But, close as Pius’s association with the Holocaust might have been, he is unlikely to have been directly responsible for as many deaths as the man who now sits in his place. John Paul II, the Holy Father and Angelic Shepherd, God’s representative on earth and the only living person who is officially and constitutionally infallible is a mass murderer.

Every year the Pope kills tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of the world’s most vulnerable people by the simple expedient of forbidding Catholics to use condoms. While his imprecations are dismissed by most churchgoers in the First World as a load of papal bull, in countries in which there is little access to alternative sources of information and in which women have few rights, every papal decree against contraception sentences thousands to a lingering death.

There’s no question that the Pope sympathises with the victims of AIDS. In Italy he has hugged AIDS patients in public. In San Francisco, he kissed an HIV-positive baby. He has urged sufferers to “feel Jesus at your side, and through your hope bear witness to the life-giving power of his Cross.” Unfortunately, however, he has exercised the power of the cross only to spread death.

Teaching people about safe sex, the Vatican says, is “a dangerous and immoral policy based on the deluded theory that the condom can provide adequate protection against AIDS.” Sex education, “above all in relation to the spread of AIDS” is an “abuse”. In 1995, when a French bishop suggested that people infected with HIV should use condoms, the Pope promptly sacked him. Last month the Vatican used its seat at the UN General Assembly (where, preposterously, it has national status) to disrupt, yet again, the UN’s family planning and AIDS prevention programmes.

There are 122 million Catholics in Africa. Whenever the Pope visits them he explains that the only acceptable form of family planning is strict sexual abstinence. He told the Nigerians that exploiting the poor and ignorant is “a crime against God’s work.” But every year he exploits the poor and ignorant by preaching against the condom.

Many of Africa’s Catholic bishops know that the Pope’s position is absurd, and quietly, privately, they have tried to undermine it. But they are also keenly aware that, unlike dioceses in prosperous countries, they are almost entirely dependent on the Vatican for funding. They know that they and their churches will survive only if, in public, they do precisely as they are told. So in Zambia, Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, some of the countries with the biggest AIDS problems on earth, prominent bishops have insisted that condoms should not be worn. Some, who share the Pope’s views, go further, and suggest that condoms spread AIDS by selectively leaking the virus.

Every time the bishops speak out, they reverse years of awareness raising (often, paradoxically, by Catholic charities and local churches) about AIDS and how to prevent it. Men looking for an excuse to practice unsafe sex seize on the Church’s teachings. People who do use condoms deny it, ensuring that the safe sex message spreads more slowly than the disease.

The Pope’s position reflects not only a fundamentalist interpretation of the laws of God. Like Pius XII, he insists on total political control. Autocratic, backward-looking, both popes have sheathed themselves in ecclesiatical mythology, an infallible barrier to impregnation by reality.

The Vatican wants to celebrate the year 2000 by canonising Pius XII for helping the oppressed. A better way to mark the millennium would surely be the indictment of John Paul II for crimes against humanity.

Vatican: condoms don't stop Aids
written by Plug logic, March 17, 2007

The Guardian

The Catholic Church is telling people in countries stricken by Aids not to use condoms because they have tiny holes in them through which HIV can pass - potentially exposing thousands of people to risk.
The church is making the claims across four continents despite a widespread scientific consensus that condoms are impermeable to HIV.

A senior Vatican spokesman backs the claims about permeable condoms, despite assurances by the World Health Organisation that they are untrue.

The church's claims are revealed in a BBC1 Panorama programme, Sex and the Holy City, to be broadcast on Sunday. The president of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for the Family, Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, told the programme: "The Aids virus is roughly 450 times smaller than the spermatozoon. The spermatozoon can easily pass through the 'net' that is formed by the condom.
"These margins of uncertainty... should represent an obligation on the part of the health ministries and all these campaigns to act in the same way as they do with regard to cigarettes, which they state to be a danger."

The WHO has condemned the Vatican's views, saying: "These incorrect statements about condoms and HIV are dangerous when we are facing a global pandemic which has already killed more than 20 million people, and currently affects at least 42 million."

The organisation says "consistent and correct" condom use reduces the risk of HIV infection by 90%. There may be breakage or slippage of condoms - but not, the WHO says, holes through which the virus can pass .

Scientific research by a group including the US National Institutes of Health and the WHO found "intact condoms... are essentially impermeable to particles the size of STD pathogens including the smallest sexually transmitted virus... condoms provide a highly effective barrier to transmission of particles of similar size to those of the smallest STD viruses".

The Vatican's Cardinal Trujillo said: "They are wrong about that... this is an easily recognisable fact."

The church opposes any kind of contraception because it claims it breaks the link between sex and procreation - a position Pope John Paul II has fought to defend.

In Kenya - where an estimated 20% of people have HIV - the church condemns condoms for promoting promiscuity and repeats the claim about permeability. The archbishop of Nairobi, Raphael Ndingi Nzeki, said: "Aids... has grown so fast because of the availability of condoms."

Sex and the Holy City includes a Catholic nun advising her HIV-infected choirmaster against using condoms with his wife because "the virus can pass through".

In Lwak, near Lake Victoria, the director of an Aids testing centre says he cannot distribute condoms because of church opposition. Gordon Wambi told the programme: "Some priests have even been saying that condoms are laced with HIV/Aids."

Panorama found the claims about permeable condoms repeated by Catholics as far apart as Asia and Latin America.

Pope rejects condoms for Africa
written by Plug logic, March 17, 2007
Last Updated: Friday, 10 June, 2005, 15:04 GMT 16:04 UK

The spread of HIV and Aids in Africa should be tackled through fidelity and abstinence and not by condoms, Pope Benedict XVI has said.

Speaking to African bishops at the Vatican, the Pope described HIV/Aids in Africa as a "cruel epidemic".

But he told them: "The traditional teaching of the church has proven to be the only failsafe way to prevent the spread of HIV/Aids."

More than 60% of the world's 40m people with HIV live in sub-Saharan Africa.

In South Africa alone, 600-1,000 people are thought to die every day because of Aids.

Pope Benedict, who was elected to succeed John Paul II in April, has already signalled that he will maintain a strictly traditional line on issues including abortion and homosexuality.

Before being elected pope, Benedict served as head of the Vatican's doctrinal office.

These were his first public comments on the issue of Aids/HIV and contraception since taking office.

He was addressing bishops from South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland, Namibia and Lesotho, who had travelled to the Vatican for a routine papal audience.

Some Catholic clergymen have argued that the use of condoms to stem the spread of the disease would be a "lesser of two evils".

The Pope warned that contraception was one of a host of trends contributing to a "breakdown in sexual morality", and church teachings should not be ignored.

"It is of great concern that the fabric of African life, its very source of hope and stability, is threatened by divorce, abortion, prostitution, human trafficking and a contraception mentality," he added.

The virus "seriously threatens the economic and social stability of the continent," the Pope said.

The UN estimates that without new initiatives and greater access to drugs, more than 80 million Africans may die from Aids by 2025 and HIV infections could reach 90 million, or 10% of the continent's population.

African press cautions Pope
written by Plug logic, March 17, 2007
Many African newspapers have welcomed the selection of Pope Benedict, while warning that the church must soften its stance against condoms in fighting HIV/Aids.

Some editorials are disappointed an African contender was not chosen, while others feel he is a good choice for a continent grappling with disease and poverty.

The election of the German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as the successor to Pope John Paul II has put paid to a lot of excitement among many Africans who have been speculating about the possibility of an African Pope in Nigerian Cardinal Francis Arinze. The Africans are not the only people disappointed. The people of Latin America and Brazil have also been disappointed. With the election of Pope Benedict XVI we can be sure that the conservative radicalism in the Catholic Church is assured with all its contradictions.

Uganda's New Vision, editorial
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Benedict XVI, the church has one of its most effective prophets and its most articulate voice. His views reflect the truth and represent the stand of the faithful majority. No matter the early reactions to his papacy, his message tells necessary truths.

Kenya's Nation, commentary by Okiya Omtatah
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The church continues to refuse to transform at its own peril... There is no sound theological basis to preach against birth control methods. It is also not unhelpful for the Church to close its eyes to the HIV/Aids problem and maintain a rigid position on the use of condoms. These are the issues on which Ratzinger's papacy will be judged. He has the choice either to become a Pope for today, or to remain a prisoner to the past.

Botswana's Mmegi, editorial
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Pope has to get down to serious business immediately by addressing the issues of homosexuality, abortion and the ordination of women into priesthood. These are burning issues that would test the immediate astuteness of the pontiff within the church.

Liberia's The News, editorial
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pope Benedict is not likely to touch as many hearts as Pope John Paul II did because of his preference for reticence and intelligent scientific debate over dogmatic faith. To win over Ugandan Catholics, however, Pope Benedict will have to borrow the tireless wings of the most travelled Pope in history and traverse the world with his message... There is hope that Pope Benedict's past aversion to social action against poverty will not deter the global campaign for the amelioration of the negative effects of poverty, Third World debt, and unfair trade regimes.

Uganda's Monitor, editorial
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Catholic Church is a complex creature, so change can't happen overnight... The Catholic Church is also stuck in an unhelpful position over its opposition to condom use, particularly given the ravages of Aids... The Vatican itself doesn't have to endorse condom use, but it can go round its fears by allowing Cardinals in respective territories to adopt "guidelines that are appropriate to local conditions".

Kenya's Nation, editorial
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Pope is not the UN secretary-general, or head of any other association, to be expected to resolve one problem or another or to act as a substitute for one or another situation. What should be said is that the new Pope should be a pastor, first and foremost, that is to say, the caring father of the people of God over whom he has responsibility.

Cameroon's Tribune, commentary by Patrice Etoundi Mballa
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unless the new Holy Father is willing to listen to the calls for a review of the use of condoms to fight HIV/AIDS, there could be a drift from the church. The challenge is for the African bishops to take up the cudgels against Catholic orthodoxy and campaign to save millions of Africans from certain death, from a disease which has not been tackled effectively with the doctrine of abstinence, which the church insists on.

Zimbabwe's opposition Daily News, editorial
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He and his African bishops will have to address the question why so many of their Catholic faithful are leaving for evangelical and pentecostal churches in sub-Saharan Africa. This phenomenon of desertions in significant numbers is also common in Latin America... The new Pope will not change the official Roman Catholic Church's stand on the use of condoms. But the question will continue to press hard and persist in the face of the Aids pandemic.

Kenya's Nation, commentary by Fr Lawrence Njoroge

Left-Wing UK Paper Pulls Bush Assassination Column
By Patrick Goodenough
CNSNews.com Pacific Rim Bureau Chief
October 25, 2004

(CNSNews.com) - Britain's left-wing Guardian newspaper said at the weekend that it and a columnist were sorry if anyone took offense at published remarks appearing to call for the assassination of President Bush.

In a column published in the paper's entertainment guide section on Saturday, Charlie Brooker wrote that Bush would probably win the Nov. 2 election despite the prayers of "the entire civilized world," thus proving that God does not exist.

"The world will endure four more years of idiocy, arrogance and unwarranted bloodshed, with no benevolent deity to watch over and save us," he continued. "John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, John Hinckley Jr. -- where are you now that we need you?"

By Sunday, the column had been pulled from the Guardian's website, replaced with a note saying that the final sentence of the column had "caused offence to some readers."

It said the paper associated itself with a statement from Brooker, apologizing for any offense caused by his comments.

"The views expressed in this column are not those of the Guardian. Although flippant and tasteless, his closing comments were intended as an ironic joke, not as a call to action -- an intention he believed regular readers of his humorous column would understand. He deplores violence of any kind."

Booth and Oswald respectively assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in 1865 and President John F. Kennedy in 1963, while Hinckley tried to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981.

...
written by Free the Press, March 18, 2007
(Elsewhere in Brooker's column, the columnist compared Bush and Sen. John Kerry's performances in the recent televised debates, saying while the Democrat had looked and sounded "a bit like a haunted tree," he was, at least, "not a lying, sn****ring, drink-driving, selfish, reckless, ignorant, dangerous, backward, drooling, twitching, blinking, mouse-faced little cheat.")

The controversy over Brooker's column came shortly after the Guardian ended a much-criticized campaign aimed at influencing next week's presidential election.

The paper handed out, to anyone who applied via its website, contact details of American voters in battleground state Ohio's Clark County, which Al Gore won by just 324 votes in 2000.

Although the Guardian portrayed its campaign as merely an attempt to urge registered voters of undeclared party allegiance in the county to use their vote in what was a very important election, the paper made little attempt to hide its strong preference for Kerry.

The campaign, dubbed "Operation Clark County" drew considerable interest, and the paper said it handed out more than 14,000 Clark county voter names and addresses to applicants from Britain and many other countries around the world.

But it also sparked strong opposition, with the newspaper being inundated with mail from unimpressed Americans.

A popular weblog based in Australia provided email addresses for more than 50 individual Guardian staff members and suggested they be swamped with messages.

Other "bloggers" suggested that pro-Bush people apply for voters' details -- the newspaper had promised to hand out each name and address only once -- to spare some Clark county residents the irritation of getting voting advice from abroad.

Hackers also broke into the Guardian website.

Guardian media editor Ian Katz wrote that newspaper staff received thousands of emails from voters in the U.S., some of them abusive - an onslaught which he said was "pretty unpleasant and inconvenient" for newspaper staffers.

"You couldn't fail to be a little shocked by the volume and pitch of the invective directed our way."

Meanwhile, the newspaper's reader's editor (ombudsman), Ian Mayes, reported Saturday that in an internal poll of Guardian staff, 44 out of 71 respondents were against Operation Clark County, 13 favored it and 14 were undecided.

Among reasons given for those opposed to the exercise was the view that intervention in the democratic processes of another country was not "legitimate newspaper behavior."

Mayes said the Guardian's editor had defended the campaign, saying "it was a crucially important election in the face of which many felt a sense of impotence."

The paper has ended the campaign. It also dropped plans to send the winners of a competition -- writers of the four best letters to the American voters -- to Springfield, Ohio, to observe the closing days of the election campaign. Instead the winners will be given a trip to Washington, D.C.

The exercise may have had an unintended -- if not unpredictable -- response, that of galvanizing the pro-Bush camp.

Ohio Republican spokesman Jason Mauk was quoted in the New York Post as saying: "The British are our loyal allies, but voters in Clark County are outraged at this tacky publicity stunt conducted by an anti-Bush publication to manipulate the vote in Ohio. It has backfired miserably and fired up our base. The Guardian did us a big favor."

This possible fact would make anyone who gets confused undestand will this forum... Notice how they attack anyone against US corporative and therefore political interests.

Lula represents US corporations' interest in Brazil and Latin American. US presidents are always best friends of criminal politic elites from Latin America.

The superpower American imperialist state represents the international oligopolies and sistematically violates the political and economic autonomy of underdeveloped countries, preventing their improvement and spreading starvation and poverty in these nations. They want Brazilians to hate Americans, because some American citizens fight against corporate greed and crime. (My regards to MichaeL Moore who approached Brazilians against this cancer called Americans corporativism). Democrats must change avoid this corporate path if they dont want to keep this criminous and murderous state. Also these gentlemen who defend US interests and attack Brazilian ones want to discredit Brazil and Brazilians and anyone who can obstacle their goals of profit, which all they care. They use philosophical, social, cultural, nationalist discourse to diverge attention and suspect and produce confusion. They also want to discredit liberals calling them gays and pedophiles . This wold is a mess because of them.

Background
written by Ludwig Van Beethoven, March 18, 2007
A little background on Ludwig and his parents: My parents and I always have been very close and we still are. My parents never got divorced and if you believe that true love does not exist you have to see these two. So, no rebellion against my parents. People claim I am a "Catholic Conservative", I would say I am a nothing, I am just one voice in billions screaming. I said before that I was baptized, so I am a Catholic in these terms, but I never returned to the Church. I have done most of the things the Church tells us not to do. But yet again, Death shows us its face and we begin to question our reality. Do you know the pain of seeing somebody dying of cancer, losing a family member?

My education growing up: my parents always talked to us about Christ, but in a "buddy Christ" sort of way or my father would say to me: As 'JC' used to say, and then he would teach me something. No mass on Sundays. I asked my parents and they took me to shows of Black Sabbath and others. I went to the Monsters of Rock festivals that happened in Sao Paulo (1994, 1995,1996) starting when I was 11 years old. The last one was an Aerosmith show in Louisville in 1999. My education growing up has been very fun. My father and I used to go surf together in the beautiful coast of Sao Paulo. Than we started seeing the complete destruction of the environment around us, our beautiful coast, with the Atlantic forest was being torn down. My father was tired of corruption in the government and Brazil. He contacted an American company and he was hired to work in the USA. I moved there when I was 15 years old. So Religion has nothing to do with it. Again it was my philosophical pursuits that lead me to the conclusions that I express. Reading, a lot of reading. Liberal and conservative.

Regarding the very impolite posts a bout the Catholic Church, I have this to say: I believe you have all the right to express yourself, and here is a link for you to send all the information you posted here: http://www.vatican.va/faq/index_en.htm

As for my opinion regarding the subject, here it is: The posts are unfair. The problem is that the Catholic Church has to break a long tradition in order to accept this. The Church would have to deny all that it has been teaching for thousands of years, it is a theological issue. The church is not forcing anybody; remember the Free will, well.

Here is a phrase from a great man:

"The Church proposes; she imposes nothing" Pope John Paul II

Aes, I really like your description of 1968. I understand that you know a lot and you saw a lot. Also Bo and Ric. I too have a subscription of The Economist. This week they have a special report on Europe,"Europe's Mid-Life crisis" (and on April 14th, they will have a special report on Brazil-I can't wait to read it). On this week issue they have a article about (AIPAC.)
I read The Guardian, Der Spiegel, and other sources. I read their blogs too. And often times there are huge discussions on what is and who is: left, right, liberal, Christian right, Chistian left, and the list goes on....
I will never forget one poster's comment, in a thread that was debating Middle East. He or she wrote:
" I'm fed up with labels - simply because they so easily become substitutes for thought and, thus, understanding....some like to set up strawman arguments that suggest that I am supportive of oppressive regimes..."
It was a big discussion, more than 500 comments.
So you are right, there is a big debate right now in Europe on "Left" (here comes the label) being associated with "radical Regimes" be it in Latin America ( Chavez) or in Middle East.
I for one would be cautious, since I don't like labels. I believe it stigmatizes people. It kills the argument, it kills the idea. NO dialog is possible when labels are created, although, is hard not to create them.
My suggestion is to do what you do. To be humble, and sincere. To say: " This is what I think, but I may be wrong. I'm open to honest feedbacks, and honest discussion."

That's not being discriminatory Dana, and, it was an attempt at humor, obviously one that you didn't catch. Back in the 1970's there was a show, maybe you've heard of it, "Saturday Night Live", with Bill Murray, Steve Martin, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, just to name a few. Back in those days Saturday Night Live churned out the most famous comedians of that era, there was a skit they used to do which was the "Evening News", with Chevy Chase and Jane Curtin. They would give "editorials" at the end, Jane would always go first, Chevy would then go after, and would always start out his little bit with, "Jane, you ignorant slut....'. It was juvenile comedy, but very funny.

Well, I'm quite sure they have the full attention of the CIA, FBI, and NSA, not to mention MI-6 and the british authorities.

A couple "funny" incidents...
written by bo, March 20, 2007
on my brief stay in Salvador. First, the wife and myself were eating lunch on Sunday at a japanese restuarant, for those that have been to salvador you may be familiar, it's name is "Soho", and it is built on stilts in the water close to the port of Salvador. There is a deck outside that surrounds the restaurant and we decided to eat out there, a beautiful place with a beautiful view. You are literally sitting above the water, if you're keys, sunglasses, wallet, etc, would drop off the table and over the side of the deck, you would have to go diving for them. I'm sitting right beside the railing of the deck and while enjoying our lunch I feel something forcefully grab my ankle, it scared me but moreso was in semi-shock of what could possibly be grabbing my leg, I look down and it's a 7 year old boy asking for money. Can you believe it?

When I drive to Salvador I always take "linha verde", it is one of the best roads I have seen in brazil. It is a two lane road without potholes, one can drive 130 km's and faster with no problems, it is a toll road. I was driving around 130 and came up over a little hill, on the other side, approximately 300 meters in front of me, were at least 100 head of cattle, from the far left hand side of the road to the extreme right, there was no escape. Thank goodness I did have time to slow down, but nearly locked them up. What I couldn't understand is that there were 3 "cowboys" with the cattle, why would they allow them to be spread out over the entire highway? If I would've been driving faster or if they would've been closer to the knoll I had just crossed there would've been a terrible accident.

Just a couple incidents that makes one shrug his shoulders and say, "bra-zil!"

No person shall bash the US President.

2 - Just because people don't like Bush, that doesn't mean they don't like the US or its citizens. I hope the US makes lots of deals with Brazil and that this pertnership grows stronger. Also, I have wonderful North American friends (who also bash Bush, BTW). I also bash Chavez, but wouldn't dream of bashing Venezuela or Venezuelans. Yes Adriana, I also disagree with rigid labels and generalizations but the ‘left’ have a few common principles and the right also have a few common principles. The “left”, besides the common support for illegal immigrants and the support of radical Islamic regimes are also united in their use of the USA as a scapegoat. I was reading the Corriere della Sera and I came across this article regarding Anti-Americanism in Italy:

http://www.corriere.it/english...2007.shtml

It is very important to read different sources, I do not like some newspapers because I believe they practice unethical journalism, the Guardian is one of the best examples. The Economist does keep different views, sometimes, but they do try to push an agenda also. I guess most papers do follow some agenda, but the papers in Britain are out of control. I do not know what they are doing in their journalism schools. It is clear that they are not doing a good job.

I do not know what I am now. “Left” or “Right”? I am certainly not a “left” winger. I was, not anymore. With the “right”, I also have a few issues, like the fast opening of markets all over the world. I believe that the “free trade” agenda of the right can be dangerous because they do not take into account the danger of indirect impacts, for instance military danger or ecological impacts. I am for “free trade”, but I believe it only works between countries that have similar principles and markets. Today, I vote basically looking at “lesser of two evils”. Every time I mention this I remember Machiavelli saying that we should never be neutral. Hell Machiavelli, I do not know, I am doing the best I can. The bottom line is: I am not happy with the way things are going in the Western world.

Thank you for your last post. I am waiting for your e-mail and I want to hear about your idea for that ONG that you are planning.

Meanwhile lets continue to bash Bush because he stood up to the challenge. Everyone loved the smooth talking Adulterous Clinton, because he best represented our current morals.

Eugenics used by "insane extreme leftist totalitarian regimes" ???

And then you go on in your last statement to give another generalization about the British press and it's journalistic practice, dude you are so full of s**t, like American journalism is "fair and balanced"? Get it straight, the printed press in every country operates according to one political agdenda or another that's why we have this thing called 'alternative media now', meaning the chances of getting news that is not filtered by corporate controlled governments, but that's too 'lefty' for you, even so there are well documented examples in the UK of divided political opinions within the same publication. So British media, you dont have a clue, if you do, lets see your break down of the main publications, who owns them what the polictal afiliations are, the socio-economic demographic for each, and the readership figures. Then give us your definition of 'bad journalism' and who the worst journalists are. Then when you are done with that give us the front page stories for each British paper and tell us which one you think is giving the most truthful and unbiased view of the most pressing issues on the planet today.
Extra extra, read all about it!

Do You know what I like most in the Guardian?
Is the blogs. I think the British posters are more capable of writing than the journalists themselves. I learn more from the comments regarding the article than with the article itself.
For instance: I was in a thread that was discussing Middle East. This guy came in and wrote something very interesting. He mentioned an Institute called MEMRIT TV. It stands for: The Middle East Media Research Institute. He said that the videos in this Institute was a good tool to show the Middle East to the West. And because of that he believed that some changes were going to be possible because now the Radicals in Islan were going to be shown to the West without the language barriers. Now the West can see and hear them. what they think, what they say about us the Western societies. This poster's theory was that because we know now what the radicals think, they will be more cautious on their speeches, and hopefully their political approach. Because they don't want to gives us the proof that their society is a radical-oppressive society. For example last year, the Iranian President in one of his speeches, he denied Holocaust. He thought that we couldn't have known it, but it was revealed. And that gave him some diplomatic problems.
Then, this poster gave the web site of the Institute: www.memri.org
I went to check and I was totally surprised. specially with the videos of Wafa Sultan, she is an Arab American Psychologist. I was impressed of how strong she was in the video I saw. she was debating with two (radical) clerics. The arguments she used, how persuasive she was.
I went on to search this Institute. and I was embarassed to see how ignorant I was, concerning Middle East. In my idea more than half of the people there were extremists, radical, terrorists, and so on...
Through this Institute's videos I realized that there are lots of Arab Liberals, and Arab Reformists, as well as academics, researchers, intellectuals, and authors, who are trying to create an open-democratic-civilized-debate in their societies.
And if you visit MEMRI web site read the quotes. You'll read CIA directors, Newspaper' editors, and other politicians on what they think about the Importance of this Institute.

But going back to the post, I believe that we have to search for information, all the newspapers and midia have their own agenda at some extent. It is up to us to filter the inform ation we think is going to benefit us.

I'll send you an e-mail on Thursday night, when I come back from college.

Thank you Adriana,

I will read the links you sent me, very interesting. I have Muslim friends; one of each is a Moroccan professor of Islamic civilization. I will send him the link, he will certainly like it. You are correct, today there are many “moderate” Muslims, the problem is that they are not a majority in the Islamic world. The populations are normally very uneducated, a problem similar to the one we have in the Brazilian population. Another issue is that the moderate Muslims normally migrate to other countries. I had two roommates from Turkey, one a conservative Muslim the other a totally secular Turkish citizen (big fan of Ataturk). From them I learned a few things on how their culture works. The press in the Islamic countries does play a big part in the Anti-western sentiment of Islam; my friend always reminded me that the people in these countries did not have these radical ideas a few years ago. Radicalism is a recent movement, Professor Samuel Huntington’s “Clash of Civilizations”, explained how the current cultural rebirth of civilizations happened after the end of the Cold War. I used to have access to a channel called Link TV (based in San Francisco); they used to have a program called Mosaic News from the Middle East. I used to watch it, very interesting. The news were very different, I was impressed at how they portrayed the news related to Israel and Palestine, extremely biased. Totally different from the news in Europe and North America.

But going back to the post, I believe that we have to search for information, all the newspapers and media have their own agenda at some extent. It is up to us to filter the inform ation we think is going to benefit us.

I agree. I was watching the news today and the press is labeling Al Gore’s call for conservation efforts: “Gore’s Crusade”. You can see it in most TV news and newspapers. I believe that the term is not constructive and only cause more friction in the debate on conservation efforts. It is clear to me that they are using this term to play the parties in the discussion against each other. We can not have anything done this way, radicals in both sides. I am constantly attacked here from radicals that come out of nowhere, just for expressing my ideas. It is weird; the world has become a theater of mad “radicals”.

Caspa,

I believe you should learn to be more polite with people, if you had said: "can you please explain" I would have been more than happy of discussing my ideas with you. The arrogant way that you asked for "reports" was even more deplorable. I never had a supervisor talk to me like that and the last time I checked I never received a paycheck from " Dandruff". You mentioned in another post that you appreciate Professor Edward Wilson; I am also a big fan of Wilson. I remember his ending of "The future of Life", he despised radicals such as you. People that mix Dawkins with Wilson, nothing to do with each other, one a total radical lunatic and the other a man that truly recognize the necessity of negotiation in order to implement conservation of biodiversity. I remember very well Wilson saying that the only way of confronting the problem of biodiversity was to have society as a whole understand and take measures to ensure conservation. I do not think you are helping, you are making it worst, making it God x Darwin. Ridiculous! By the way, I used to do the walk and not only the talk. I worked for half a year in business development for an energy conservation company. I went to conferences and fairs of alternative technology, incredible stuff coming to the markets. You should know that it will be entrepreneurship that will bring the revolution that we need in conservation, and not a bunch of lunatics that make conservation even harder to apply. Again, we could have shared a lot of information, but unfortunately I do not discuss with people that are arrogant and not polite. Remember, it is a computer that you see in front of you but you do have a human being in the other side.

Ignore the part about Wilson and Dawkins. It was another radical that said it, Mr. Groan. I am having a hard time with so many attacks, my mistake. We can not have a constructive discussion here, amazing.

TO CONOR FOLEY
Why does your guardian comment is free site close down comments all the time - and why dont you complain about it
Interesting discussions, and wanted to talk of my own brazil experiences, but was forbidden to do it. Comment-closing forums suck, especially from "free" and "open" selfproclaimers like the guardian newspaper.
