In Defense of Brazil's Beautiful and Moving National Anthem PDF Print E-mail
2007 - April 2007

Brazil's National Anthem When I told my Brazilian wife about an article I read recently bashing her country's melodious Hino Nacional ("the world's worst national anthem," was the staggeringly forthright, first line of the piece), she grew absolutely indignant - irate, I'd dare say, all four-foot-eleven inches of her - over what I truly thought was a tongue-in-cheek approach used by the author, Englishman Ricky Skelton, regarding this potentially incendiary subject.

Playing devil's advocate for once (but ever so gingerly where my combative spouse was concerned), I jumped to Mr. Skelton's defense, and even agreed with some of his shaky line of reasoning, including the statement that of all the soccer nations in the world today, Brazil, with its "uniquely Brazilian genres of music," i.e. samba, bossa nova, axé, Tropicália, forró, MPB, and funk, could certainly "do better, far better" with its national anthem - or so he'd have us believe.

The solution Mr. Skelton offers would be for someone with the musical talent of, say, Martinho da Vila, to "compose a new Samba Anthem...which will get the players and crowd infused with the vibrancy and exuberance of their amazing country."

That's all well and good, as far as it goes. However, where we must part company is in his designation of a "good national anthem" (citing France's and Scotland's as the best examples), which should, he goes on to explain, "be an expression of the characteristics of a nation and its people. Yet for some reason, Brazil has some turgid, 200-year-old military marching music, which should be more suitable for an old central European country like Liechtenstein."

I do not want to repeat what my dear and loving wife had to say about that last phrase. I also do not wish to respond in an adversarial manner to this peremptory challenge, but would like instead to take a less aggressive tone - sort of a friendly rebuttal, if that would be permissible - in my reply to Mr. Skelton's contentious arguments.

First off, why bad-mouth a battle hymn to an already embattled republic without first reciting some of the all-important lyrics inherent in it, which, in this case, are as full and complete expressions of the characteristics of the Brazilian nation and its people as any that are currently out there.

Secondly, why offer a viable solution to a supposed problem where none even exists? Has anyone ever complained before about the failings of the Hino Nacional? Where is the documented evidence of such an allegedly egregious offense? Shouldn't we rather adopt the more neutral tactic of "if it ain't broke don't fix it"?

And thirdly, why not provide some enlightenment to the general public (in the way of much-needed background information) about the historical events surrounding the creation of Brazil's nationalistic theme?

Now here's where my history degree and love of popular and classical culture come into play: for you see, unlike Mr. Skelton, whose "exhaustive research" took on the rather unscholarly form of "watching World Cups and international football for a lifetime," I decided to go online and conduct my own investigation into this matter.

What I learned, then, was this: that a constitutional sympathizer named Francisco Manuel da Silva (1795-1865) composed the music to what we know as the Brazilian national anthem in 1822, as a reaction against Portuguese monarch Dom João VI. The story goes that da Silva wrote the piece in a shop frequented by intellectuals yearning for freedom.

It went on to serve for many years as the unofficial Hino Nacional as well as a military band-music standard, hence the reason why it sounds the way it does. Okay, so Francisco Manuel da Silva is no Rossini or Bellini - and he probably couldn't hold a candle to John Philip Sousa, either - but he's definitely no slouch in the Salieri mold, of that I am certain.

Interestingly, it took another hundred years for the lyrics to be joined together with the existing tune. This eventually came about in 1922, when, on the eve of the centenary celebration of Brazil's Independence, poet and journalist Joaquim Osório Duque Estrada (1870-1927) delivered up the definitive text to "Ó Pátria Amada" ("Oh Beloved Country"), the current lyrics to the anthem.

The music was played (sans words) during the royalist period, covering the years 1831 to 1889, and primarily at official occasions. Incidentally, when the last of Brazil's emperors, Dom Pedro II, was deposed and sent into exile in 1889, the governing body of the New Republic realized the need for replacing old imperial ideals with newly installed republican ones.

A competition was thereby held promoting a new national anthem (and, by association, a new political allegiance). The country's foremost classical exponents were invited to participate, including famed opera composer Antonio Carlos Gomes. He respectfully declined, however, due to his previous close relationship to Dom Pedro (would that some of our present day political figures are capable of doing the same).

The winning entry turned out to be that of composer-conductor Leopoldo Miguez (1850-1902) and his patriotically themed "Liberdade, liberdade, abre as asas sobre nós!" ("Liberty, liberty, may your wings envelope us"), with appropriately vibrant verses by José Joaquim de Campos da Costa de Medeiros e Albuquerque (1867-1934) - that's a hearty mouthful even for Brazilians!

Upon hearing the committee's choice at the official unveiling, the first president of the republic, Marechal Deodoro da Fonseca, in typical Brazilian eleventh-hour fashion, made his now-famous pronouncement to one and all: "Prefiro o velho" ("I prefer the old one"), meaning da Silva's century-old "military marching music," thus lending support to the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" school of thought previously invoked.

As a consolation prize for his efforts, Miguez's song of liberty was honored with the official title of Hino à Proclamação da República ("Hymn to the Proclamation of the Republic"), a position it holds to this day.

Staying with da Silva's music for the moment, the one that Mr. Skelton finds so unworthy of consideration of Brazil and her talented people, there is this extraordinary bit of trivia I wish to impart to readers.

Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869), an itinerant American composer, musician and pianist, a native of New Orleans and a Creole-Jewish descendant, spent a large portion of his professional career in the salons of European, Latin American, and Caribbean society, as well as on our own Brazilian shores, where he met his tragic and untimely end.

It was Gottschalk who not only found the anthem worthy of his consideration, but was credited with having written one of the most bombastic, most colorful, most entertaining, and most thoroughly enjoyable concert showpieces anyone has ever heard (I kid you not).

Called, appropriately enough, the Grande Fantasia Triunfal Sobre o Hino Nacional Brasileiro ("Grand Triumphal Fantasy on the Brazilian National Anthem"), it was originally conceived for piano and orchestra, and was to be played as part of a much longer composition entitled Marcha Solene Brasileira ("Solemn Brazilian March").

Both works premiered at the Teatro Lírico in Rio de Janeiro, on November 24, 1869, with Emperor Dom Pedro II and his full court in attendance, along with three of the city's orchestras, the marching bands of the National Guard, the Imperial Army and Navy, and about 650 other performing extras, including mixed chorus and backstage cannon (shades of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture).

Unfortunately, it was during this same "monster concert" that Gottschalk collapsed from exhaustion and pain, and a few weeks later died, at age 40, from a ruptured abdominal abscess.

I recommend a listen to the CD, especially the one with Brazilian pianist Cristina Ortiz, as it will soften anyone's hardened heart about this marvelous piece - I guarantee it.

I come now to the most difficult part of this summation (difficult, I should say, for anyone unfamiliar with the complicated Portuguese language): and that is, the words to the Hino Nacional itself. Space and time prevent me from delving too deeply into all the intricacies and nuances found in this fairly longish and distinguished poem, and for which some knowledge of Brazilian history may also be a prerequisite.

Suffice it to say that some of the fervor and inspiration Mr. Skelton feels is so sorely lacking in Brazil's national anthem can be heard right here, to its fullest extent, in the beautiful and moving lyrics to this mighty ode. Some highlights of the same are:

E o sol da liberdade em raios fúlgidos
Brilhou no céu da Pátria nesse instante.
Se o penhor dessa igualdade
Conseguimos conquistar com braço forte,
Em teu seio, ó liberdade,
Desafia o nosso peito a própria morte!

The words, loosely translated by yours truly, now begin to take on a more stirring form:

And the sun of liberty, with its brilliant rays,
Shined on in our nation's sky at that supreme moment.
The guarantee of that equality
Was so bravely won with our own strong arms,
In your breast, oh lady liberty,
Forever challenge our hearts, even unto our death!

Does this smack of patriotic fervor? You bet it does! Does it urge fellow Brazilians to fight and die for their country? Why yes, absolutely! Then again, so did the Marseillaise ("Aux armes, citoyens! Formez vos bataillons! Marchons, marchons!" - "Citizens, to arms! Form your battalions! Let us march, together"), which is even older than Brazil's unfairly maligned anthem and a part of the so-called "good" ones mentioned by Skelton.

Of course, Brazil hasn't fought in a real battle since World War II, by my reckoning, but surely every World Cup match-up, every local soccer entanglement - indeed, every time the players hit the field - a fight ensues for honor, for country, and, in fact, for all Brazilian soccer fans everywhere, with the exception of Germany 2006. (Where was that fervor back then? I don't know...you'd have to ask the Portuguese and the Italians.)

Still, to put an end at last to my lengthy harangue let me propose a peace offering, if you will, and without the aid of a Secretary of State: for all future World Cup and international soccer appearances by Brazil and its national team, why not have the musicians expand upon Chico Buarque de Hollanda's classic song, "A Banda," that wonderful hit from 1967, when the country still had a world-class outfit to boast of?

It's both a march and a samba, and makes excellent use of an existing band (already on the pitch, most likely, if we're talking about Brazil); has an imaginative and literate text by an acknowledged master of the genre ("Estava à toa na vida / O meu amor me chamou / Pra ver a banda passar / Cantando coisas de amor / A minha gente sofrida despediu-se da dor / Pra ver a banda passar / Cantando coisas de amor"); and is the perfect musical alternative to the "problem" from a recognized Brazilian authority, no less.

I think even my wife would be able to compromise on that one (but I'm not going to ask her just yet).

In conclusion, Mr. Skelton should read the following excerpt from an online posting of London's The Guardian, dated June 20, 2002:

"Brazil's Hino Nacional is arguably the jauntiest, cheeriest, most tuneful, and most beguiling national anthem on the planet. It feels as if it comes ready composed from the opera house...by the time [Englishman Charles] Miller first brought football to Brazil in 1894, the Hino Nacional had long expressed in song what Pelé and his successors later expressed so wonderfully on the field. While the Marseillaise makes bellicose calls to arms, the Hino Nacional stirs national feelings by appeals to Brazil's 'pure beauteous skies,' its sound of the sea, and the flowers of its 'fair smiling fields.'"

If the above description can't convince Mr. Skelton of the error of his ways, then nothing can. With that, I rest my case.

Skelton's statement on Military Music, national anthem and Liechtenstein !
written by ch.c., April 19, 2007

Concerning the difference of "style" between the UK and Liechtenstein national anthems, Skelton is TRULY an idiot, simply because :

"The tune and words of the UK anthem "God save the Queen" are mostly accredited to Henry Carey but this is not the only theory. Others say that the music was written by the famous composer Jean-Baptiste Lully based on a French hymn played when the King arrived. The tune is also used as the national anthem of Liechtenstein." ....as per
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A798195

Furthermore the same source says : "The Sex Pistols released their own version of 'God Save the Queen' proclaiming: 'God Save the Queen! The fascist regime!'. The song was banned but this didn't stop people buying it and it sold like hot cakes"

Better yet.... as per : http://david.national-anthems.net/li.htm
"It may seem odd to hear that the melody of the national anthem of Liechtenstein, a central European kingdom with no ties to Great Britian at all in its history, would be exactly the same as the familiar God Save the Queen, but, as the Liechtenstein anthem, it is entitled "Oben am jungen Rhein". This link might be explained by its close ties to neighbouring Switzerland, who has also used the melody as its anthem in its past (as well as nearby Prussia, and later Germany, at the time). (The fact that Liechtenstein shares a well-known tune with another nation has led to a few awkward situations of amateur composers approaching Liechtenstein officials with proposals for a new anthem, convinced that one is needed.)"

Funny isnt ????? Goofing more is difficult !!!! Laugh...laugh...laugh !

The other funny thing is the Brazilian national anthem when it says : "The guarantee of that equality"
knowing Brazil is the world 10th most UNEQUAL country !!!
Should it not be more appropriate if it would have been "The guarantee of that (IN)equality" ?????

'Guarantee of that (IN) equality' is with the help of the Swiss
written by Igor Stravinsky, April 19, 2007
The equality is guaranteed, it has yet to be manifested.

The real reason why foreign tax evaders invest their money in Switzerland is the unique Swiss differentiation between tax evasion and tax fraud. Tax evasion is not a crime, only tax fraud with falsified documents carries a criminal punishment.
This legal division has consequences. It also applies to legal and regulatory cooperation – that means that Switzerland only assists other countries to investigate when an act is considered a crime in Switzerland. In Swiss law on international legal assistance tax evasion is explicitly excluded. Without legal and regulatory assistance thanks to the separation of tax evasion and tax fraud, foreign tax evaders are safe here.

The Berne Declaration and the Swiss Coalition of Development Organizations demand that Switzerland ceases to assist tax evasion. The Swiss hair-splitting that differentiates tax evasion and tax fraud should be abolished. Switzerland should offer legal and regulatory assistance to countries also in straightforward cases of tax evasion.
If your not part of the solution you're part of the problem, for the inequality not only in Brazil, but the inequality in the world.http://www.evb.ch/en/p25002822.html
two percent of Swiss owning forty-two percent of the nation's wealth, the biggest problem the country's facing is the widening gap between rich and poor.
written by Igor Stravinsky, April 19, 2007
But with two percent of Swiss owning forty-two percent of the nation's wealth, the biggest problem the country's facing is the widening gap between rich and poor. Over five hundred and thirty-five thousand people are thought to be living below the poverty line, but despite a welfare system being available for the needy, according to charity groups, many people fear poverty in Switzerland carries a social stigma and they're simply too embarrassed to ask for help.

In Pitch
written by aes, April 19, 2007
The term musically is to be 'in pitch' not 'on pitch'. On pitch seems more like a Cricket term. So if you dont know that then, the deduction is that you dont actually play an instrument. But the rest was highly informative, but as a consumate ignorant, essentially requiring faith in your musical perception. Desculpe. BTY I am not a fan of National Anthems, and prefer to march to the tune of a different drummer, mostly jazz. But I've yet heard a national anthem written or sung to jazz. Desculpe for any affront.

The only problem with the national anthem is that it is tricky and difficult for many to sing. It is a beautiful song, but is poorly sung and taught to children all over Brazil by teachers who themselves were taught by unmusical teachers. So what one hears in the classroom or at events bears little resemblance to what is actually written.

From 1998 to 2002, over 100 billion Reais have been money laundered outside of Brazil, mostly ALL to New York Banks !
Judge Morgenthau from NY, doesnt understand how after many years of investigations, only 20 millions Reais have been traced with the beneficial owners !
In Brazil those who denounced the illegal activities, asked for an official investigation. In the report 90 Brazilians politicians were named.
In December 18, 2004, The Brazilian Congress Voted NOT TO OPEN AN INVESTIGATION !!!!! GUESS WHY !
Ohhhhhh a midleman, nicknamed Da Barcelona, was sentenced to 25 years in jail ! But none of the beneficial owners......of course !

Funny that Palocci the previous Finance Minister was able to find out the bank account of a young man having received Reais 30'000.- but that neither the then Finance Minister
or the then Brazilian Central Bankers have ever even looked at who money laundered these 100 billions !

Concerning the Swiss Banking Industry, I just remind you for your own education, that it represents less than 10 % of our GDP !!!!!

Quite curious that all this came from a difference from national anthems where I simply said that Skelton is an idiot by loving the UK anthem and disliking the Brazilian anthem comparing it to a military music that ressemble the Lichtenstein anthem.....while both the UK and the Liechtenstein anthems are ALMOST.....THE SAME !!!!!!!

oHHHH....YESSSSSSS......I added that Brazil is ranked as the world 10th worst inequal country !!!!!

IS THAT WRONG ????????
Many articles have been written on that subject, even on this site !

And concerning the Brazilian monery laundering, you better look at the Miami and New York Banks. IT IS ALL THERE !!!!!!!

Here is some of the latest news.
My gift to you !

"Brazilian police dismantle illegal foreign exchange market
Brazil's Federal Police on Tuesday arrested 22 people in an operation to battle money laundering and other financial crimes committed by illegal monetary exchange firms.
The operation was carried out in four Brazilian states, including Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia and Amazonas.
Federal agents confiscated laptops, hard disks, dozens of fancy wristwatches and 24 luxury cars such as Porsches, Mercedes, Audis and Toyotas.
The police also collected documents on the suspected firms' banking records, which listed money transfers, properties and monetary exchange activities.
According to the authorities, the firms negotiated about 30 million U.S. dollars per month.
The agents also found 177,000 reals (87,190 dollars) and 700,000 dollars in cash during the operation.
Investigations began in September 2006, when the Federal Police was informed about a doleiro -- as Brazilians call the person who trades U.S. dollars and other currencies on the underground market --
Marco Antonio Cursini, the doleiro, and his son Caio Vinicius Cursini are still at large, while another member of the group, Nick Salussoia, is outside the country and also a fugitive.
Brazil's court determined the suspension of operations in 19 bank accounts allegedly relating to the group. The measure can also be extended to six other accounts in the United States, Portugal and Panama. "

LAUGH....LAUGH....LAUGH !!!!!!!!

They have been able to dismantle this "small" money laundering shop.....but UNABLE to find out the money laundering of over 100 bilion Reais !

Ohhhh and look at the countries involved ! Smile !

Enjoy !!!!!

Samba
written by A brazilian, April 20, 2007
I think the only two problems we have here are Rio and Bahia. Yes, Rio and Bahia and their carnaval. They try so much to please foreigners with this "samba" or "axé" crap, creating the illusion of an exotic land where some fat and sexually repressed american or european comes to fulfill his fantasies with some transsexual, that the final result is this:

The solution Mr. Skelton offers would be for someone with the musical talent of, say, Martinho da Vila, to "compose a new Samba Anthem...which will get the players and crowd infused with the vibrancy and exuberance of their amazing country."

So, in the mind of this idiot, brazilians can't have culture, they can only dance like monkeys some african noise?

I have nothing against any form of culture, but samba and axé aren't the only two forms of expression in Brazil. Brazil has much more!. I bet the writer of the article didn't even know Brazil had such composers.

The worst part is not samba itself, the worst is that it is commercially exploited ad nauseam. Samba nowadays is to culture what McDonalds is to french cuisine. A big machine of making money exploiting those that lack the good taste, nothing more.

Not sure what americans are taught in school, but they seem to be brainwhased. They love to compare themselves with greeks and romans, but they aren't even close to either of them, they would be closer to the northern barbarians ethnically and culturally. Then they love to portray others as "africans" or "indians" or some other ethnic designation to make sure they aren't "western", and that those "others" should "be proud" of their "vibrant" culture by showing off an incredible amount of stupidity and narrow-mindedness. If those "others" decide to study or to have a more diverse and culturally rich taste then it means that they aren't "proud" of "their" culture.

Oh yes, and when the bastards come to Brazil they want to see "the real Brazil". That's an euphemism for "poor, short and brown starving bastards living in the middle of nowhere, who can barely write their own names, whose knowledge of the portuguese language is close to none and that have some sort of party, where some strange music is played".

My cannibal compatriots, this is another reason why we must eat as many cultures we can. You don't argue against such thing, you just do what you must, in our case is to eat them.

Your perception of American culture is flawed. It is most of all about self relience. About the individuals capacity to accompish, by his own responsibility his life. We do not think of ourselves as Roman or Greek. We think of ourselves as Free. Freedom of movement of opportunity. As to Brazil for me it was a source of Bosa Nova, of a unique and articulate Jazz form. For me Brazil was also the Amazon. It was never a Sao Paulo or Rio, of high rises and technological innovation, of ethanol or automobile manufacturing. Americans are naive as to the world, we think Africa is a country. We are in need to be shown, visually. There is so little of Brazilian cinematic art that comes to the U.S. So we are left with a vacuum of ignorant imagination, never imagining the sophisticatin of Brazil. But we will.

Great article, and well researched.

Personally, I think it is the most beautiful national anthem as well, so melodious, and inspiring. My carioca wife of course also in agreement, and I am proud to sing this as well(although with my singing voice, not many people around me want me to sing).

I am from Australia, where we have had a controversy around our national anthem for as long as I can remember. Until 1970 or there aboouts, our national anthem was "God save the Queen" (the English National Anthem).

Then it was changed to "Advance Australia Fair" , an absolute shocker of a piece of music, and the words extremely " Old English" in style.

In typical australian fashion, on less formal events, the national anthem gets pushed aside and you hear "Waltzing Matilda" which is about the life of a sheep stealer and his subsequent murder by the police. It is a geat tune, but the words are hardly appropriate to a national anthem.

Anyway, thanks again, great article. Congratulations

When did people start singing national anthymns, when Madison Avenue became involved. Ring the National Anthem bell and everyone stands up and has a feeling of Nationalism, pathetic. Enjoy the march, go back to sleep.

Once again you are completely confused and lost. What you say make no sense whatsoever. Have you abandoned your snow thesis and now are creating some sort of anthem thesis? What I said is very clear for those with neurones enough to understand, which unfortunately doesn't seem to be the case of an illiterate old fart like yourself who can barely speak english and until recently thought all things were invented by the english (even the number system).

Your reaction against anthems, which is curious since nobody here ever supported the existence of anthems, is ridiculous, worth of an intellectual midget. The original post, and the subsequent remark about Britney Spears, was a response to the writer of the article, a ridiculous piece of text from an obviously clueless american that doesn't know s**t and still feels entitled to say what others should do. You must be dyslexic.

But one things remais true, in this ever-changing world the unique ability of absorbing new things is what will tell who lives and who dies. Following the knowledge as the lion follows the prey is what differentiate people like me from people like you. You are the passive, a byproduct of a decaying and static pseudo-"civilization", built upon ignorance about everything else, whose values don't work and aren't respected anymore.

Who the f**k you think you are to compare yourself to the great masters? Well, if that's what you mean by "we are this and that in a global scale". You are nothing but puppets! Engineers, architects, sculptors and even warriors are all over the globe and american companies, all companies to say the truth, rely more and more in skill found abroad as a matter of survival. That's not exactly new because if it weren't by the Nazis there wouldn't be Nasa. Talent is everywhere and the intelligent companies will seek it in order to profit more and more.

Goethe, Nietszche, Schopenhauer, Kant, Freud, Einstein, Socrates, Plato, Aristoteles, Machado de Assis, Camões, etc, they all belong to a different class of human beings, they are immortals. That means they aren't like you. You are nothing, remember that. You are just an ignorant white supremacist bastard who believes someone can "own immortals". Their achievements are theirs, not yours. There's no "us" between immortals and men.

Your pride about things that aren't even yours is what prevents you from learning other cultures, and your abysmal ignorance about the ancient people, whose contributions led to what we have today in technology and culture, is evidence of that. Your small world was crafted throughout your life, and you, apparently, have some difficulty recognizing that your country and what you call "we" is nothing but a grain of sand in this world, meaningless and transitory. This is your shell, this is your limitation, this is what makes you blind.

And, yes, I am cannibal. Eating the men that matters, the really intelligent and really capable ones, by digesting what is good and evacuating what is bad is what makes a better human being. Thicker people might take some time to understand the analogy, but what will be will be regardless of your mental capacity.

Whom do you nurture? You are one that eats the intellectual 'food' of others, but whom do you feed. What repast of intellectual genius is being created by your diatribe. You do not create you de-construct.

Oppenheimer, Salk, Henry Ford, Thomas Jefferson and a thousand others. Were able to create because of the physical and intellectual environment of the United States.

I deliberately, out of curiosity, responded to your absurd post in such a manner that would put you into a tirade, by expressing didactically, ' We are hunter warriors, intelectuals, scientists, writers, cinematographers, sculptors, architects, ON A GLOBAL SCALE'. You are threatened by the truth of the statement. You think that because if one says 'we are great on a global scale', it means that no one else is. It is merely a statement of empirical data, it is not an opinion, it does not preclude others from being great on a global scale. Everything that you wrote about American culture is flawed NONE of what you wrote is true:
"Not sure what americans are taught in school, but they seem to be brainwhased.

THE CONFUSION BEGINS HERE: You write this to me implying that I am saying that 'someone should make a'samba anthem'. . .etc. etc. when in fact it is not addressed to anything that I have said. So much of what follows is like a PINTER or IONESCO play the genre of 'the Theater of the Absurd'
AES written by A brazilian, 2007-04-20 15:05:23 To say that someone should make a "samba anthem" for it to be more fidel to Brazil is the same as to say that Britney Spears should produce a new american anthem, so it will be more "american". Nonsense
And since you direct the comment to me I say, 'who the f**k said someone should make a samba anthem', meaning I dont know why you are addressing the comment to me.
And so for no reson begin thinking about the nature of Anthems, governments, Pavlovian conditioning and you start with what you call 'Intellectual Cannibalism' which may be substituted more simply as intellectual synthesis. Which has been discussed already for a hundred years ala Marx, Engle, Plato. 'There is noting new under the Sun' dear boy. It is harder to have you understand the meaning of what I am writing then it is for 'a camel to pass through the eye of the needle than a rich man to enter heaven.' Did you know that there was a gate in the old city of Jerusalem called the 'eye of the needle' and inorder for a camel to pass through it he had to kneel.' That is the origin of Christ's words. The taste of your mind is bitter with discontent. To know God you must die to your self.

Did these immortals make it through the eye of the needle with their greatness and flaunt in before the creator?

Their total greatness as you might measure is but a speck of sand passed on to mortals who die in their mortality.

All wisdom and knowledge flows from within the eternity of the eternal, a river greater than any mortal could perceive and without measure. Angles have witnessed it but can not fathom its depths nor can it be counted or measured.

To those who immortalize mere mortals and make them GODS are most to be pitied.

If I say such things about the american culture is because I know it a bit, and those things are true. This site has some stories, all written by american citizens born and raised in the US, about how the theme race is dealt with:

http://www.raceintheworkplace.com/

The situation the writer of this aticle cited, of someone suggesting a "samba anthem", fits perfectly this story:

http://www.raceintheworkplace....one-wrong/

Anyway, so I’m at work one day and the assistant commissioner sends an email to everyone on the diversity council about this great idea she has: that all of us people of color can dress up in “traditional dress” and people can come around and we can describe our culture to them. I suppose since I’m 1/2 Peruvian I’m supposed to dress up like one of the indigenous people of Peru and bake a potato dish for them.

Will you say that this is all made up? Will you say that I don't anything about american culture?

About your affirmation. Since you haven't defined any scope, it's impossible for you to have any "data" to back it up. Therefore it's impossible for someone to feel "threatened" by it. Wishful thinking.

Here, it is considered to be impolite to wink at a cute or homely secretary who is wearing a mini-skirt.Instead, cultered men like me,like to dar "abraços e beijos " to our secretaries and compliment them for the elegant dresses they wear and ask them to start cracking and get the job done. What do you expect from them, to wear clothes like Mother Thereza of Calcutta?. I like to call such gestures as motivating factors in a working enviorment.

As for farting in front of your gay colleagues in your country, all I can say is that your gays are very "abusadinhos".Here we dont have such problems. You can fart, belch or snore in front of them and claim that they are fully accepted at the work place. Anothr motivating factor.

To succeed means another must fail. It is about the control of the thinking of the American populace and how it has and is being accomplished. Prof., was describing life in the U.S., contrasting with the 'freedom' expressed by his newely returned friend. So the Link was an amplification of the nature of the American, the American psyche, and the processess and raison d'etre for where we find ourselves, it is about the intellectual evolution or devolution of life in America. It was one of the most concise explanations of the concept of Concervative, Liberal consciousness in the U.S. and the consequences ie. vulgarity, promiscuity, irriligiosity, relativism, etc. If you wanted to learn something at an advanced grad school political science level, the Link is an excellent polemic.

However, if you spend much time living with African Americans you

Prof, as I have mentioned before in one of the threads, I am color blind. I place more importance on brain power than muscle power.Brain Power is color blind too. However, I am coming to a conclusion (may be premature) that being good to others can cause you problems later.Fine, the Caucasian Americans wanted to up lift their black brothern economically and socially, starting from the 60's,giving lots of incentives. But the latter forgot that the former listened to their grievences and strived hard to attend to them. BTW, I have heard of stories about Reverse Racism, not only in America, but also elsewhere (including Brazil).

Many times I think that the elite Brazilians want to avoid such problem pretending that there is no racism in this country. I feel that we Southerners are much more tolerant towards diversified races, including the Afro Brazilians, who btw are not reverse racists (if there is a term). I dont think that it can be said to be true in the North Eastern part of this country. A friend of mine who visited Salvador recently said that almost 90% of the population consists of blacks with no hopes for the future.Good strategy on the part of the white politicians to keep them oppressed ,but happy by giving them bolsa familiar. This will avoid any reverse racism in the future.Of course, they forget that there are miliions of white Brazilians who get pissed off at their attitude. These elite would like to keep the white Brazilians also uneducated and ill informed. What do you expect from Gilberto Gil that always complained about the military government, promoted himself at their cost and made it big turning out to be a Minister in the current government. In a way, he is also a reverse racist as well as pissing on his fellow Afro Brazilians.

You know Prof, there is a talk of reduzing the educational standards for the minorities for admission into the Federal Universities.I am against it.I am in favor of strengthening the basic education and giving equal opportunities to children of all races to get into the schools and incentivate them study hard and participate in the "vestibular" like every one else. This way, we build self confidence in the kids and avoid future racial problems. I think it can be done.

I think there is a certain stupidity to that. But I do think the government could provide tuition to any student that remotely gets close to meeting entrance requirements, I dont know if there is a dormitory here, but a grant for financially strapped students. Also there were work study programs at university, all kinds of jobs on campus, they were paid on a different scale than the private sector, put it was kind of like part of the grant concept.

AES, I started suspecting that you read Tom Clancey, after the nice analysis you and Professor made about the real intentions of the Chinese (I hope one of you is not Tom Clancey!).Yes, indeed Tom is geopolitically prophetic. On the day of 911,I was sitting in my office and having a meeting with the staff. I got a call from a good friend of mine (also a Brazilian and well read person). He asked me to turn the TV on and watch the live news and said "Tom Clancey´s prophecy came true" and hung up the phone. I did watch the Twin Towers falling and said to myself "This is a modified version of 'Debt and honor' by Tom Clancey". A few years later, I read "The Bear and the Dragon". Believe it or not, the current scenario is very similar to what he wrote. I wonder if Professor reads Tom Clancey´s books (or he is Tom Clancey himself masquerading as "Professor", if it is not you). Somehow, our Intel analysis seems to coincide with that of Clancey!

Second, americans are usually ignorant about anything regarding other countries, and they have some weird ideas about what means "to be proud of someone's culture". The "multicultural" story is the same case as the "samba anthem", hilarious.

Another funny story from that site is when a boss of a company asks a 1/2 chinese descendent american if the friend she indicated for the job is "all american".

Here in Brazil you don't see any of that, not "all brazilian" labels nor multicultural stupidity. The people that like to talk about their origins do it out of their free will, because they want to, not because the society can't accept them as 100% brazilians. Do you see the difference?

He taught geography at Yale (1907–15) and from 1917 was a research associate there, devoting his time chiefly to climatic and anthropogeographic studies. The Climatic Factor (1914), Civilization and Climate (1915, rev. ed. 1924), and, with S. S. Visher, Climatic Changes (1922) were among his works. He also wrote Principles of Human Geography (with S. W. Cushing, 5th ed. 1940) and Mainsprings of Civilization (1945).

Those aren't up to date studies. Let's see, XIX century and early XX. Curiously the timeframe is the same as that of eugenics and other popular racist beliefs of the american culture.

The same flawed beliefs as:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T...dic_theory

In Grant's view, Nordics probably evolved in a climate which "must have been such as to impose a rigid elimination of defectives through the agency of hard winters and the necessity of industry and foresight in providing the year's food, clothing, and shelter during the short summer. Such demands on energy, if long continued, would produce a strong, virile, and self-contained race which would inevitably overwhelm in battle nations whose weaker elements had not been purged by the conditions of an equally severe environment." The "Proto-Nordic" human, Grant reasoned, probably evolved in eastern Germany, Poland, and Russia, before migrating northward to Scandinavia.

Wow, really interesting, isn't it? Except that it ignores much of the history of the human civilization and the great developments (most of them) that occurred in regions not cold.

One of the things I observed is that many situations where a brazilian would be horrified, such as black or white racism, you consider to be normal. For example, most people believe to be normal to label others with some generic name and expect them to behave in a certain way, they also seem to have an irrational fear of others, so much that a clear separation is needed, etc.

I understand your point of view. Unfortunately whatever culture you live in you soon find they all have eccentricities. Even as an American I had to come to better understanding of America, I did this by reading books that explained how America become to be as it is. I have also read books about how Brazil has became the way it is. Two parallel stories within the same time frame, two different outcomes.

Even with all the problems the U.S. has and all the problems Brazil has the GOOD people within these two countries either rich or poor, black or white, red or brown are still GOOD.

It is interesting that in Brazil to be educated is something to flaunt against the uneducated, whereas; in the U.S. I have not experienced this. I think perhaps if
between the two cultures one should bow their head in shame is the one who oppresses the poor and demoralizes them without impunity. On the other hand
the educated in Brazil believe that Americans should bow their head in shame for their racism and lack of knowledge in Geography. lastly, those of true knowledge
are neither of the above, they are meek. In addition, the multitude of Professors that I have met in Brazil, I am proud to say are this way, however their students who attempt to clamour to greatness are a different beast.

In the U.S., people use whatever advantage card to rise to the top. So in saying, the cream rises to the top in the U.S. In Brazil people use whatever advantage card to rise to the top. Here though not many make it that far and you are left with a lot of scum at the top who make it by deceit.
In the U.S. you are tagged, classified and grouped whether you are a natural born American or not and whatever race, color or creed you might be.
A good way to understand some of this is to watch:

Einstein's work is during the same time period, time has nothing to do with truth. A thing is true or it is not regardless of the century.

I wanted to introduce you the concept of Anthropogeographic studies. The general postulation being that human culture, invention are consequences of stress, climate obviously being one of the most obvious.

Most of civilization occurs after the last ice age and is generally agreed that it occurs on the Stepps of Iran
occuring on the edge of the last ice age some 15,000 years ago. With all its consequence to the evolution of civilization. Including the types of plants, and by consequence animals, and by consequence, groupings of peoples ultimately into city states, government etc. The rest is history.

Yeh I was disappointed that he was a leading proponent of Eugenics. And was prepared to disregard his relevancy. But antropogeographics is a science that developed much like ecological studies.

What is true is not negated by what is not true.

[edit] Iranian history before the Aryans
There are records of numerous ancient and technologically advanced civilizations on the Iranian plateau before the arrival of Aryan tribes from the north, many of whom are still unknown to historians today. Archeological findings place knowledge of Iranian prehistory at Lower Paleolithic times (800,000 years ago). These evidence are in form of stone tools made on quartz which have been found at Kashafrud.[1] There are more cultural remains of Neanderthal man in Iran which mainly have been found in the Zagros region and fewer in central Iran. Some of these important Neandertal sites are Bisetun, Kunji, Warwasi, Qaleh Bozi[2]. Evidence for Upper Paleolithic and Epipaleolithic periods are known mainly from the Zagros region in the caves of Kermanshah and Khoramabad. The earliest sedentary cultures date from 10,000-7,000 years ago. These evidence are coming from archaeological sites such as Ganj Dareh, Sarab, Mushki, tepe Chaxmaq. In 6000 BCE the world saw a fairly sophisticated agricultural society and proto-urban population centers. The south-western part of Iran was part of the Fertile Crescent where most of humanity's first major crops were grown. 7000 year old jars of wine excavated in the Zagros Mountains (now on display at The University of Pennsylvania) and ruins of 7000 year old settlements such as Sialk are further testament to this. Many dynasties have ruled Persia throughout the ages. Scholars and archeologists are only beginning to discover the scope of the independent, non-Semitic Elamite Empire and Jiroft civilizations [3] 5000 years ago. At the end of second millennium, the Aryan nomads from central Asia settled in Persia. These are some of the civilizations in Iran before the Aryans: Zayandeh Rud civilization, Ganj Dareh,Teppe Sialk, Shahr-e Sukhteh, Marlik culture, Luristan culture, Mannaeans kingdom, Kingdom of Jiroft, Elamite kingdom.

Slightly over half of all biological/physical anthropologists today believe in the traditional view that human races are biologically valid and realMorphological characteristics, however, like skin color, hair form, bone traits, eyes, and lips tend to follow geographic boundaries coinciding often with climatic zones. This is not surprising since the selective forces of climate are probably the primary forces of nature that have shaped human races with regard not only to skin color and hair form but also the underlying bony structures of the nose, cheekbones, etc. (For example, more prominent noses humidify air better.) As far as we know, blood-factor frequencies are not shaped by these same climatic factors.

A.Brazilian:

Those who believe that the concept of race is valid do not discredit the notion of clines, however. Yet those with the clinal perspective who believe that races are not real do try to discredit the evidence of skeletal biology. Why this bias from the "race denial" faction? This bias seems to stem largely from socio-political motivation and not science at all. For the time being at least, the people in "race denial" are in "reality denial" as well. Their motivation (a positive one) is that they have come to believe that the race concept is socially dangerous. In other words, they have convinced themselves that race promotes racism. Therefore, they have pushed the politically correct agenda that human races are not biologically real, no matter what the evidence.

Consequently, at the beginning of the 21st century, even as a majority of biological anthropologists favor the reality of the race perspective, not one introductory textbook of physical anthropology even presents that perspective as a possibility. In a case as flagrant as this, we are not dealing with science but rather with blatant, politically motivated censorship. But, you may ask, are the politically correct actually correct? Is there a relationship between thinking about race and racism?

Is there a relationship between thinking about race and racism?

I think this is an over-simplification. It's not a simple matter of "politically correct incorrect" and "politically incorrect correct".

Of course there will be various differences between people, in terms of body constitution, and such differences could cause the individual to have more difficulties in certain tasks and ease in others. But that's a lot different from using the concept of race as a flag and as a political means to acquire power, because "races" aren't so simple as black & white as advertised in many cultures. You can't simply create a three or four names and start using it for labeling all people. This would be scientifically incorrect and racist.

Pay attention to the absurdities you have written repeatedly on this forum. You are using body differences as evidence to produce judgements about other people, judgements that have been proven to be historically incorrect and ignorant. You cite Shakespeare because you don't know anything about any other culture, but even so you think you are right about using this eugenics theory, built upon ignorance because by the time it was created DNA hadn't been discovered yet, to feel "proud" about the "truth" the "race deniers" woudn't like to hear. If there's so much you ignore about the world, how can you be sure you are right? Isn't it just an evidence that a few jump to the conclusions they feel the most comfortable with and conveniently accuse anybody that disagrees as "politically correct"?

Answering your question, creating a few designations and using it for political purposes is not only racist but also scientifically incorrect. So here you see a direct connection between race and racism, in this case, and this is what I complain about black activists, to promote "races" is the same as to promote "racism".

For example, two incredibly stupid designations are Hispanics and Asians, because they are vague and mean absolutely nothing, except "they aren't one of us". You see these made up races being used for racist purposes, i.e., divide people.

The other "race" is scientific, and that one should stay in laboratories and books. Such knowledge of the human body can help better treatments for certain diseases and other improvements. This is not related to politics, hate groups, social constructs, culture and it will not match the definitions you were taught in the US. This is the same as different blood types, they exist, but you don't see people "proud" of it.

I have a question, can you see in the DNA the concept of "Aryan", "Black" or "Hispanic"? The "race denial" thing only exists in the mind of racists that see their attempts of establishing a racial hierarchy frustrated by the rational people. I hope I have clarified the two concepts you insist in treating as if they were one.

This argument of "politically correctness" interfering with science is not true. Many of those pseudo-scientific conclusions are centuries old and can't be proven, they will be "found" only if certain historical and scientific facts are ignored.

The concept of racism, having an antipathy for an entire race, is the province of the dispicable, of the profoundly ignorant. It is inherently irrational.

It takes 100,000 years of geographic isolation for the human species to morph into race, in reaction to a variety of environmental preasures, the selective forces of climate are probably the primary forces of nature that have shaped human races with regard not only to skin color and hair form but also the underlying bony structures of the nose, cheekbones, etc. (For example, more prominent noses humidify air better.) n. (used with a sing. verb)
The study of hereditary improvement of the human race by controlled selective breeding.

In a way one could construe nature as a form of Darwinian eugenics.

Racial hierchy as you propose is purely egocentric. And may be only true for specific geographic and climatic condition; for example, more prominent noses humidify air better.

And do not mistake race with culture.cul·ture(klchr)
n.
1.
a. The totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought.
b. These patterns, traits, and products considered as the expression of a particular period, class, community, or population: Edwardian culture; Japanese culture;
c. The predominating attitudes and behavior that characterize the functioning of a group or organization.

Where as race is:

1. A local geographic or global human population distinguished as a more or less distinct group by
genetically transmitted physical characteristics

I think Hispanic is less a race than a culture. As if you go to Spain you will find light skinned blond haired Spaniards as well as dark skinned dark haired ones. But they will all have similar skelital or forensic determinations.

I tend to be a universalist. A student of C.J. Jung. That the same human architypes exist universally, regardless of race. I think Shakespear speaks for mankind 'Life is but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and is heard no more. Tis a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury signifying nothing.' I also have a fondness for Zen ie 'you know the sound of two hands clapping, what is the sound of one hand clapping?' You merely have to be human to contemplate the koan. And 'enlightenment' is not bound by race either, it is a human phenomenon.

I think a racist is someone that is blind to the humanity of another. And prejudice is a false conclusion based on insufficient data.

Only if your a racist. Their motivation (a positive one) is that they have come to believe that the race concept is socially dangerous. The Hebrew word for war is 'mil cha ma' which is the same etymological root of the word for bread

What I liked about Israel was that the Army was the people. You would get on a bus and there would be someone standing next to you with a sub machine gun, along with another ten armed soldiers traveling some where. Everybody is in the Army till the age 55, including women. While doing graduate work in the Negev I spent two weeks on a religious kibbutz on top of Mt. Gilboa. In the morning they would rise and with uzis and teffilin wrapped with head covered, pray, in an image that a Los Angeles intellectual
mind had difficulty apprehending.

In the year that I was in the desert I never saw anybody shoot anybody or commit physical violence, they were all armed. They speak with an intensity the frightens westerners, cows them, but they never resort to physical violence.

It was '71 and the 'anti war movement' still filled my head with ideal ratinality. And then a Phantom jet flew over the tarmac a hundred feet off the ground at 400 miles an hour screaming as it banked over the Dead Sea on patrol. It was at that point I realized that war is not an intellectual game, that it is a matter of life and death, and how pleased I was for the 'military industrial complex'. The world is not at peace and there are people that would kill you, KILL you. It is best to be well armed. The concept of race is postulated by forensic anthropologists. It is based on forensic, it is biologically evidentiary. It is based on science. The article was from NOVA.

Even if that is true, and I mean the whole truth and not only part of it, it still doesn't validate the american concept of races. Because such concepts of race carry other ideas and meanings, not only the purely scientific data, and change over time and culture.

So, you see, you are trying to one piece of an evidence to prove non-related concepts. Race, as known in american popular culture, exists before any reliable science about the topic existed. Check this out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ignoratio_elenchi

Ignoratio elenchi (also known as irrelevant conclusion or irrelevant thesis) is the formal fallacy of presenting an argument that may in itself be valid, but which proves or supports a different proposition than the one it is purporting to prove or support.

Therefore, they have pushed the politically correct agenda that human races are not biologically real, no matter what the evidence.

This is a too simplistic conclusion, as I said, regardless of what differences science is able to categorize, it's not going to match the american popular culture and meanings, history and ideas associated to each of them.

Recently we can see some corporations funding studies about "the fallacy of global warming", because they have an interest in people not believing in it. What is very common to see on forums is the same argument as you used, people accusing everyone that thinks global warming is a fact of "ignoring all the evidence otherwise". Too easy.

In science it's your obligation to prove that something is true, not others to prove you are wrong. If the scientific evidence about race were undeniable there would be no way it could be hidden. What people are against to are the concepts from the XIX century, not any difference or definition science might eventually find.

Perhaphs a non-American could see it more easily, because only in the US "Hispanics" exist. Americans, on the other hand, have such a blind faith in such concepts that they not to have a clue that in other parts of the globe such "designations" don't exist or could have a very different meaning. The whole idea of "the concept or race is being ignored for political reasons" could only come from someone that believes that his ideas are the only right and everyone else in the world is wrong.

Is there a relationship between thinking about race and racism? Only if you are a racist.

This is another fallacy, used also by Americans when they defend the right to "hate speech". If you look at history you can see that the masses can be manipulated by propaganda, it has been done several times and places. The promotion of race interests many people, not only the KKK, but also affirmative action groups and political groups. By inducing people to see others as different, therefore removing any sense of "predictability" from the other group, you could easily manipulate them through fear.

The "recognotion of differences" is an euphemism for the old "segregation", used because since the civil rights movement "segregation" became a forbidden word for Americans.

The funny thing is that you see this kind of "innocent racism" as of "recognition of differences" commonly seen on white people with good intentions. I have met even some white brazilians that do believe this is a good thing. The problem with is that you assume a lot of things that necessarily aren't true, for example, that the other individual isn't comfortable with himself and that the "recognition of differences promoter" is some sort of object of admiration and he needs to "admire the other" in return for things to be "equal". But then, why wouldn't he be comfortable with himself? You see, in this case the promoter of races is racist, because he assumed that the same old concepts as those of the eugenics supporters, although he might not believe in eugenics itself, are in vogue and could hurt the one he is trying to help.

Just another thing I forgot to comment on:

I think Hispanic is less a race than a culture. As if you go to Spain you will find light skinned blond haired Spaniards as well as dark skinned dark haired ones. But they will all have similar skelital or forensic determinations.

Not really, in the US "Hispanics" is used for everyone from either America and Spain, and this is scientifically incorrect. The question is not if it is politically correct or not, but it is why this is even considered to be a possibility at all! It's simply impossible for such thing to exist!. The same applies for "Asians". Will you say that someone from Afeghanistan, China, Japan, Korean and India are all "the same"? Are you mad?

The history of the many countries in America will differ enormously, each received an influx of immigrants of different origins, and some spaniards that came here mixed with the natives, which will differ in characteristics from place to place. Not only that, but your comparison about "spaniards" and the toilet cleaner you see in the US is incorrect. Both would differ greatly since the population referred to as "Hispanics" in the US has, in its majority, indigenous ancestors as well, and the same cannot be said about the Europeans.

Once again, there's no science here, just wishful thinking, as well as most of what you have written so far. A view full of opinions and not facts, an attempt of someone to validate the narrow views he grew with, and refusing to accept that in this big world your opinions are no more than any other. The American culture is racist because it has racial fables in its very core.

But do not speak to me of things that you do not know. Life and death are not about theory, they are about blood, and burnt flesh, and the gnashing of broken bones, eyes and teeth. I am talking about forensic science. You used the word Hispanic. I thought of including Mexicans, but their 'intermingling' with native Americans have produced a mix that is not European, the Hispanics from Spain are not skeletally the same as Mexicans. The skeletons of surviving Aztecs are different then the skeletal structure of Chinese, or Asians. Science is about observations, you are entitled to your conclusions. Your conclusions are racist. Of what significance is it that there is anthropological, forensic determination that is quantified by differences to define specific types of homosapiens. I told you I was a Jungian, you do not know what this is, you have neither studied nor read young, but one of the things that he speaks of, which may be useful to your cosmography is the universality of homosapiens, the mind, the psyche are the symbology are all the same. In the United States I told you it is 'politically incorrect' to use the word race. Because those that fear its use believe that to perceive race is to out of necessity arrive at racism. Hell I can irrationally hate midgets, is that racism, or bigotry. Maybe that is what you are confusing bigotry in all its manifestations of which racism is only one.

2. Of or relating to a Spanish-speaking people or culture.

1. A Spanish-speaking person.

In the United States Hispanics means 'of or relating to a Spanish speaking people or culture.'

Since we were discussing 'the science of anthropology and the identification through forensic, ie skeletal markers. To speak of Hispanics in such a context would have to mean people from Spain who as a race are classified with the English, French, German, Dutch etc. Not Latino, but Caucasian or Caucasoidal.
Cau·ca·sian(kô-kzhn, -kzhn)
adj.
1. Anthropology Of or being a major human racial classification traditionally distinguished by physical characteristics such as very light to brown skin pigmentation and straight to wavy or curly hair, and including peoples indigenous to Europe, northern Africa, western Asia, and India.

Forensic anthropology is the application of the science of physical anthropology and human osteology (the study of the human skeleton) in a legal setting, most often in criminal cases where the victim's remains are more or less skeletonized
The anthropologist can assess metric and nonmetric characteristics of the bones to determine the minimum number of individuals, sex, stature, age at death, time since death, ANCESTRY and RACE, health, and unique identifying characteristics.

The adjective "forensic" refers to the application of this subfield of science to a court of law.

7:20 am I am a social scientist, I have been involved in studies of media and violence among children, and I have training and experience in psychopathology and criminal behavior. Words, inmages and music have power. The rap and hip-hop music is more than music–it is a cultural instrument that informs young people about who they are and how to behave in relation to each other and towards others, including women and authority figures such as the police. It defines what is acceptatble and normal–as in killing police or spending time in the big house. Music has tremendous emotional power. That is why it is incorporated as a central element in many religions, and why countries around the world have national anthems and other patriotic music, like the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America. That’s why military organizations have powerful military music as every division of our military has. And that’s why every motion picture going back decades and other performing art forms have been supported by music and lyrics. It is now known that violent video games have a profound effect on youth regarding stimulation of violent behavior, even more so than passively watching violent movies. When you combine the violence and anti-social laden facets of hip-hop and rap with violent video games, street gangs, use of self-deprecating N words which are a symptom of the historic exploitation of black people here from the days of slavery to modern times, hip-hop music and lyrics cannot be taken lightly when they encourage criminal behavior. The Bill of Rights and US Constitution give powerful support to freedom of speech–the exception being when words directly translate into violence or threats to public safety (such as screaming Fire in a theater).

Leaders of all segments of US society need to exert pressure on the hip-hop community to clean up its act.

If Clodovil goes through this site,he may get some wierd ideas and introduce a bill in the House that will force the schools to promote Homosexuality

Maybe he will promote and all gay Samba school, call it Clodiville or Saunagay or cudefarol?

Joao: Let him pass whatever he wants, nothing gets taught in Brazilian schools anyway, and the children dont show up, what's the difference?
written by aes, April 27, 2007
There are a couple of Senators and Congressmen that have had trouble keeping their hands off of underaged children has resulted in a variety of consequences. One of them being the present state of a Democratic Congress (Tom Foley, having to resign in disgrace for involvement with 16 year old pages) gave fodder to the predominately Liberal Press in the U.S. in its efforts to undermine the President's 'War on terror'.

Under Clinton we dumbed down America with the concept of 'dont ask, dont tell' now there was an intellectual solution.

Taking the concept to the 'ad absurdum' why not teach cannibalism as a right, to descriminate against pedophaelia is also an infringement of the sensitivities of certain individuals and thus its positive ramifications should, no indeed, must be tought in schools, or else. . .what is the or else that the EU threatens if Poland? You shall be punished by shunning. Monty Python did a good deal of 'ad absurdum' work.

I would like to suggest that the EU is going to breed itself out of existence through rational thinking. The 'Godification' of rational thinking. The consequence will be that those people that live their lives as though there was something 'inherently' wrong with (no pun intended) 'hooking up' with people of the same genitalia will produce more children then those people that dont. I am thinking of the Muslim's that regard homosexuality as a capital offense. It apparently is not 'the meek that shall inherit the earth', but the practicing Muslim.

I do not think that aboriginals, coloquially meaning neolithic civilizations, still amongst us, believe that homosexuality is the way of the world.

Homosexuality seems to be emotional retardation, emotional addolescence. It is interesting to note that the Greeks and Romans were great lovers of humanity and they no longer exist, they apparently f**ked each other out of existence.

You are so f**king pathetic, and old ignorant man trying to tell what other people are. Haven't you noticed that you are the only one doing that? That's because you don't have what to say, your mind is limited. I have completely destroyed every single argument you have put forward with either facts or logic. If an american of your age can only do that, then I should gain some more respect for brazilians. Just shut up, because you are giving americans a bad name.

BTW, you just don't get it, do you? This is not the US, we don't give a s**t to what you could ever think. What kind of inadequacy could cause an adult to act the way you do? Do you feel threatened by what I say? What a loser.

You probably are a a person from the class of brutes. The brutes can be divided in many subclasses, some care only for the most basic instincts such eat, drink and f**k, other brutes aren't fond of ideas and reason, but since they love money above everything else their "bruteness" doesn't look so vulgar as the previous type. Little more than cavemen those types are, and a mockery of humanity.

Another sound Geopolitical analysis and how true and prophetic. The problem with politicians like Clodovil is that they do not have a wider vision of the world and they just make a silly comment on the TV and watch the circus catching fire. As someone mentioned he loves France and hates U.S. That is an extremely narrow vision of the Geopolitics and he does have a big audience on the TV and lots of people tend to believe what he says. By making irresponsible comments, he was not contributing anything to the welfare of the Brazilians. And we have to put up with him for the next 4 years and hope that he does not introduce idiotic bills in the congress. So when I made my comment about his going through the site indicated by Professor, I was half serious and half joking.

A.Brazilian: The Yahoo speaks, 'so f**king pathetic', and condems himself with his own words.

Let me help you in your cant(monotonous talk filled with platitudes)
, ''you have completely destroyed every single argument' that you perceived that I put forward. The key is your perception. Your facts are neither facts nor are they logic. Your reasoning is specious (having the ring of truth, but actually fallacious). You have successfully described, the English satyrists' Jonathon Swift's, 'Yahoos' deformed creatures human beings in the basest form, human beings as merely endowed with some semblance of reason which they only use to exacerbate and add to the vices Nature gave them. The reflection you present is warpped distorting the reflection. You are a member of the 'illiterari' class, you have made up your mind, reached your conclusions and have no interest in information. Truth dear friend is not a matter of opinion. This you say is not the U.S. (self evident), it is however Earth and having circumnavigated the Earth, know this to be true. That all people are the same, they love, they fear, they are lonely, and they die. The meaning of life is 'good deeds'. It is only the good you've done the love you have given, that stands between you and God.

AES, this comment was made by our rookie commentor Magnus Brasil and not by me,though I tend to agree with him. You got me confused with Magnus and you must be consuming vast quantities of SKOL!

I did go through your reply to the comments made by GTY in another thread. A nice reply ,though. GTY must be missing us smilies/grin.gif

GTY is a curious bird. He likes to flaunt that he is not poor, that he does not live in the pig sty he calls Brazil and has six cars and five plasma t.v.'s and swimming pools, and 3 martini lunches, and so forth and so forth, as though the divorce rate for such people wasn't t
50% or the suicide rating wasn't 25%, or addiction of one form or another wan't 60%. The old axiom, money doesn't buy happiness, hasn't or doesn't occur to him. But it is better to live in a place of beauty than not. And I live on a mountain top in Rio overlooking the ocean at leblon, a view of corcovado, and lagoa. But I too prefer my children seek their educative years in the relative safety in Southern California, and the coast of South Carolina. It is easier to get money in the U.S. There is more of it. There is so much money and wealth in the U.S. that the poor drive cars.

"A.Brazilian: You have never been in a war. What do you know of war, of what can you say or speak that has any meaning?"

Didn't you post that you served with the California National Guard, your a f**king draft dodger and you lecture someone on war. Tell me about the battles you fought from your base in Santa Ana?

Nothing curious about me AES, jus a red blooded, "just for me" American. Who gets a good laugh every once in a while reading the drivel posted here. You are a weakminded expat. The Brazilian is a strong debater who is out numbered but holds his own for his country...now that I can respect. As for Joao, I think his blond wife must be named Harry.
GTY: Pendejo I am not an expat, I am recently married to a Brazilian.

It was Van Nuys not Santa Ana, and it was before there was a war, before the draft. It was '63. The war zone was 71-73 in Israel. You have become not a racist, but a classic Brazilian 'Classist'. 'Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country' you remember that, that was Kennedy's admonition to the country. You have turned it 180 degrees. For you it is what can your country do for you? You were paid for your military service, mine was not. Your boat, do you deduct that as a business expense? And the rest of your pretentious bourgeois existence, also a business deduction? Odd how it has become 'just for you'. You have twisted honor, service, duty and country, to me, me and mine. What you have is nothing of any significance. Only your children, have any real meaning. You are about taking not giving. That is the psychological difference between an adult and a child. You are obsessed with what you have. It will not compensate for what you do not have, and that is a generosity of spirit. 'What does it profit a man to gain the world and lose his soul?' It is your loss, not mine.

It is so lovely that Brazilians and Americans should know exatcly where to stab one another, much like a ballet where the two opposing forces strut and fret cling to ideas and ideals neither fully support or understand but which provides previously known vantage points, such as Brazilian Greeks and American Romans, Brazilians Intelectuals and American Bohoys, Brazilian Epicurians and American Stoics, well, those who understand the first example see I'm repeating myself. Lord knows I love the smell of American Bashing in the morning, which is usually such an easy picking, which brings us to AES, which is either not fully American or an American aberration which found adqueate welcome in the cool higher altitude breeze of so long decadent Rio de Janeiro, as so many before found in Paris. For decadence is not a derogatory term but the sought characteristic as pertaining to being 'greek'. Props.

As for the anthem, it is sad that the reality is so widely ignored, and the few hints impossed on the general public differ so much from said reality. Given skin color of the Soccer players, and the music emanating from the country, one would expect a Haitian like colonial revolution or at least 100% miscegenation and a solid identity thereof, contrasting sharply with a population majority which wouldn't accept be called anything else than caucasion, and would most likely go to whatever extremes for said race.
