There Are Seven Types of Peace. Brazil Needs to Make Each One of Them PDF Print E-mail
2007 - December 2007
Written by Cristovam Buarque
Saturday, 29 December 2007 09:47

New Year celebration at Copacabana beach, Rio, Brazil The Aymara people, who for centuries have lived around Lake Titicaca in the Andes, defend the principle of seven different types of peace. The first is inner peace. Peace with yourself through the health of your body, the clarity of your mind, the pleasure of your work, the reciprocity of your loves. Without peace with yourself, you are not at peace.

The second is directed upward. Peace with the spirits of your ancestors, with the will of God. If you are not at peace with the supernatural, spiritual world, with the metaphysics of your existence, your peace is incomplete.

The third is directed forward: peace with your past. The arrogant Western culture puts the past behind it. The Aymara put the past in front of them because it is the known, the seen, the lived. If you are remorseful, have unpaid debts, guilt, regret, you are not totally at peace.

The fourth is directed backward: peace with your future. Anyone who is afraid of what is to come, is frightened of debts to pay, of uncertain employment, or is expecting bad news is not at peace.

The fifth is directed towards the left: peace with those nearby. Without peace in the family, there is no peace. Domestic quarrels, discontent with family members and close friends, take away the feeling of peace.

The sixth is directed towards the right: peace with your neighbors. Peace at home serves no purpose if, on the other side of the street, there is menace, malediction, discontent.

The final peace is directed downward: peace with the earth that you tread upon, the source of your sustenance. If a tempest comes, if the soil dries out or trembles, there will be no complete peace.

I wish each reader these seven types of peace based upon the wisdom of the Aymara. But I also hope that, besides the seven forms of peace, you have plans to make them. Of the seven, five depend only upon you and your family, your introspection, your spirituality, your friendships.

But two of them, those directed to the right and downward, depend upon your sociopolitical action. They depend upon struggle.

In today's global word, all human beings are your neighbors, beginning with those of your own country. For us, the Brazilians of the 21st century, our neighbors are our 185 million fellow Brazilians.

The peace of each Brazilian depends upon every other Brazilian's wellbeing, peace without hunger or violence. If we want complete peace, therefore, we have to act to achieve it. Your right-side peace will not be complete until all Brazilians have the same chance in life. The road for 2008 is the struggle to begin the Brazilian revolution for an equal school for all.

It is likewise necessary to include in your plans for 2008 the struggle to protect nature, the beginning of the revolution for sustainable development. Without this, you will not have the peace directed downward, with Mother Earth. Nor will you guarantee the same chance to all generations, leaving future Brazilians without access to the same legacy of nature.

These two plans of struggle for 2008 are needed to achieve peace with the Earth and with humanity. Without them, you will not have the other five forms of peace either. It is impossible to have peace with God while there are children without schooling or while there is destruction of the Amazon.

How can you not feel remorse while knowing that we have already lost five centuries of history? How can you have peace with the future while knowing that we are tearing our country and the world to pieces? And how can you have peace with the family when your children and grandchildren are asking what you did to prevent the tragedy?

I wish you the seven types of peace this Christmas and hope that, in 2008, you struggle for your right to them. Merry Christmas, Happy 2008, seven forms of peace to you. And much participation to make them. Because peace does not just happen, peace is made.

The problem is not with past Brazilian history the problem is with the ignorance of the Brazilian population regarding its past Brazilian history.

Cristovam Buarque wrote: “How can you not feel remorse while knowing that we have already lost five centuries of history?”

I don’t agree with his statement, and I don’t feel any remorse about anything. As a matter of fact I have no idea what he trying to say.

It is an insult to the great men of Brazilian history of the past who shaped the history of our country – In my opinion Brazil is a great country, despite the corruption and lack of vision of many politicians of the last 20 years.

We had great men that shaped the future into the country that we inherited today; people such as Jose Bonifacio de Andrada e Silva, Dom Pedro II, Juscelino Kubscheck, even some generals during the dictatorship years are some examples that comes to mind.

How anyone on his right mind can claim that Brazil lost five centuries of history?

The fact that today most Brazilians are ignorant of Brazilian history it does not mean that the history of our country is worthless as the author is implying by his statement.

The problem is not with past Brazilian history the problem is with the ignorance of the Brazilian population regarding its past Brazilian history.

It is no coincidence that Brazil has not managed to win even a single Nobel Price in Literature. Our movie industry is on its infancy and many the movies that are made are about the worst problems about crime and poverty in Brazil creating a global perception of a country of the 4th world worse than the African countries that are going through civil wars.

They create an image of Brazil of being a piece of s**t instead of building a positive image of a great country.

Brazilian history it is a very rich source of material to make major blockbuster movies – if Brazilians had the creativity and imagination that Americans have then the perception of Brazilian history would be completely different today. Americans and Hollywood would die to have so many possibilities of stories to tell as we have in Brazilian history and make them come alive in front of our eyes in movie form.

Please Mr. Buarque don’t blame Brazilian history for the ignorance of Brazilians of its own history and the lack of creativity, imagination, and vision of the people involved in the movie industry in Brazil.

Your "Our movie industry is on its infancy and many the movies that are made are about the worst problems about crime and poverty in Brazil creating a global perception of a country of the 4th world worse than the African countries that are going through civil wars"

- Are you not aware of your TV soap operas...where everything/everyone is bold and beautiful ?????? smile
- Your crime and poverty is not a global...PERCEPTION......but FACTS !
- Your wealth inequality ranking, second world worst, is also not a perception but a reality !

Ohhhh and this is in full contradiction with your own " "We had great men that shaped the future into the country that we inherited today;" You just defined your present not with that much compliment !

Yessssss these great men shaped the PRESENT of your country....and with the actual "great" men.....your future is not any better than your past or your present !

Your own contradictions...doesnt make you smarter in anyway....than an average non educated Brazilian....with a limited capacity of analysis !

I agree with you. The general ignorance about our history is a problem. What people should learn about, besides our own history, is the right time and place to criticize Brazil. This website is the worst place on the internet to write any criticism about Brazil because of the horde of hate-mongers and bigots who will produce the most rabid and hateful comments about things they don't know about and don't care to study.

I am against the leftist urge to make ufanistic statements, but we can't rely on the Fox News fans that patrol this website.

Cristovam Buarque in my opinion is just an idiot and the definitive evidence that in this time and age any moron can have a PhD.

The problem with this site is that it promotes the false image of Brasil .For the writers of this article, Brasil is SP/RJ and their beloved "Nordeste". Most of the writers are sitting in some other countries and giving "palpites".

To be honest with you I am getting very tired of the articles published in this site and the anti Brasilian and anti American tirades of the commentators.

As for Cris Buarque, I would not say that he is an idiot. But he is a born whiner and he is happy to be one. If you solve one problem for him, he would not thank you,but will come out with another problem. In other words, he is a survivor, just like all our other elected politicians.

However, I would very much like to know the name of the University where Cris got his Ph.D from.

This site is very sensationalistic and at times appears to only want to yank people's chains, but as far as portraying brazil, most of us are well aware of the reality in Rio Grande do Sul, Florianopolis, etc. But João my friend, unfortunately these places are the EXCEPTION in Brazil and NOT the rule. Ohh, how I only wish they were the rule.

This entire country, with the exception of small pockets in the south can be characterized as having poor infrastructure, poor education, poor public security, and significant problems with poverty, and we don't even have to touch on corruption. And that's just a fact of life, not admitting that is no better than closing your eyes and wishing it would all just go away.

I am now a little more educated since participating in this blog. I have now a little more understanding why Brazil is in this condition.
Sadly, it appears that when someone in position to know the truth actually expresses themselves, you, as the 'ONLY LEARNED PERSONS' in the nation, try to degrade them. How you condemn the senator for exposing what you know is true is the REAL problem. For you, Brazil is an unspoiled paradise only marred by the defamation of those trying to educate Brazilians. You cannot deny the truth so you want those telling the truth to just "shut up!" How much you sound like Juan Carlos, the emperor of Spain, who wants those in Latin America who dare to defy the Empire to 'shut up'. Sorry, my friend, this medium was created to expand communication, knowledge, and debate; so if you can't stand the fire...

Ricardo, and many other Brazilians, who propose to advocate the philosophy of Bertrand Russell over Jesus Christ is understandable considering they cannot advocate for a position that is Christian in nature. The poor, the sick, the oppressed are "those people". They are not even Brazilian in the eyes of these hypocrites! They even deny Christ because they cannot identify with him and maintain their comfortable ideology of self-perpetuation. This make them hypocritical to their own history and then they want to identify with those people who gave them their comforts at the expense of "others".

Gentlemen(sic), your issues are not with the people posting on this site. Your real issues are with the person in the mirror. Whether in Brazil, Brazilian, or "other", everyone has the right to make their case, and you have made your case quite clearly; "Cover up the truth, silence those who disagree, and keep moving in the same direction".

I am quite sure that I have contributed much more than you to facilitate the creation of such communication forums, but am quite ashamed to see it dominated by persons such as yourselves. The very idea that you would 'exclude' those with differing opinions, even when based on fact, is only indicative of your heredity and education. Perhaps it would be better not to have such a forum, but please try not to cover the truth with the image you see in the mirror; that is why Such a great nation fosters such a corrupt and uneducated society.

Thanks friends, from sharing my views. You both are right. Most of the articles published do not address the real issues, but more like government sponsored advertisements. The ones that do are sidelined. The writers seem to wait for the commentators to debate among themselves, without participating themselves. Most of the writers sound like students of English Language Schools that are asked to pick a topic and write essays on it.

One reason I keep on saying that we need more Brazilians on this blog is to hear their views freely and the only way we can accomplish is to let them write in Portuguese. Needless to mention that most of the ex-pat foreigners who live in Brazil can understand written Portuguese as Bo and you have demonstrated and you all can write in English that is understood by hundreds of thousands of Brazilians.

Dr.Cata, first of all let me wish you and your family a very Happy New Year. I am sure that you wined and dined in expensive restaurants during the long New Year holidays with your family and Comrade-In-Arms discussing endlessly about the plight of all the "oppressed" people of the Americas without coming out with any concrete solutions (which of course does not surprise me). I don't know how Ricardo and "A Brazilian" feel about the comment you addressed to all three of us ( I noticed that you excluded other distinguished bloggers and I could easily justify, because by now I know your cunning "Divide and Rule" policy). Here are my comments:

I am now a little more educated since participating in this blog.

Thanks to us, you are. But right from the beginning, we knew you were an astute student quick to learn.

Sadly, it appears that when someone in position to know the truth actually expresses themselves, you, as the 'ONLY LEARNED PERSONS' in the nation, try to degrade them. How you condemn the senator for exposing what you know is true is the REAL problem.

We never ever claimed that we were the "ONLY LEARNED PERSONS" nor we ever tried to degrade others. We are not condemning the good Senator, but just questioning what he is doing in the senate, instead of complaining to us? Of course let me hasten to add that we do a very big problem with our currency "REAL".

For you, Brazil is an unspoiled paradise only marred by the defamation of those trying to educate Brazilians.

Dr.Cata, we never ever claimed it. However you must agree with me when I state that ONLY person trying to educate the Brasilians is our beloved Prez (depends on kind of education, though). He does have doctoral degree from the University of Life, in several disciplines.

Juan Carlos, the emperor of Spain, who wants those in Latin America who dare to defy the Empire to 'shut up'. Sorry, my friend, this medium was created to expand communication, knowledge, and debate; so if you can't stand the fire...

I fully agree that Juan Carlos is the EMPEROR of Spain. Hopefully his granson is being nurtured to be the Emperor of all the Americas, just like the 19 year old son of your "departed sister" in Pakistan has been crowned as the Prince of Asia.

This make them hypocritical to their own history and then they want to identify with those people who gave them their comforts at the expense of "others".

I certainly would like to let Ricardo and "A Brazilians" to defend their stances on this particular issue.

Gentlemen(sic), your issues are not with the people posting on this site. Your real issues are with the person in the mirror. Modesty has never been one of your virtues, Dr.Cata, though I agree that you are contributing to this forum, but not as much as veteran bloggers. I see know reason why you should be ashamed to mingle with lowly people like us. I detect a sense of superiority complex in you and you should learn how to control it. I don't know who is the bigger whiner here;

João - The problem with this site is that it promotes the false image of Brasil
- Brazil is one of the most beautiful countries in the world
- Brazil is a society with 'throw-away' children(not the only, just the worst!)
- Brazilian people are beautiful and very friendly with everyone.
- Brazil has one of the most corrupt governments in the world.
- Brazilian education is available to everyone, but even Ph.D is joke.
- Brazil is a racist society with the ruling Caucasian class living mainly to the south of Sao Paulo.
- Brazil's glorious history 'begins' with the colonization of the country by Europeans.
- Brazil's respected by all nations and that is why Libya(Khaddafi) is on UN Security Council and Brazil is not.
- Brazil's economy is growing so fast that many taxes have been removed.
- Brazil poverty is so large the country can only pay R$0.25/day to feed the poor.
- Brazil government is democratic, when it is not dictatorship.
- Brazil has learned many things from the US, specifically how to treat Indians and peasants.
- Brazilian crime rate is largest in Latin America.
- Brazilian justice is transparent, so no one sees it
- Brazilian food is wonderful and always fresh.
- Brazilian people are many colors but only white counts.
- Brazil has everything it needs, but common sense.

As for Cris Buarque, I would not say that he is an idiot. But he is a born whiner and he is happy to be one. If you solve one problem for him, he would not thank you,but will come out with another problem.

Brazilians should thank God for one person in the government who speaks the truth clearly. Are there not hundreds of others who are only too willing to take your tax money, use their position for money, and steal from the poor? This is the #1 problem in Brazil; anyone who goes against the corruption, tries to be accountable, and truthful is portrayed as against the society. So most just go along with the program - "O Glorious Brazil", fill their pockets, and to hell with the Brazilian nation! If Brazil can overcome this many problems will disappear. If not, well, it seems some like the generals, and we know who they are...

The general ignorance about our history is a problem. What people should learn about, besides our own history, is the right time and place to criticize Brazil.

Again, there is no history before the Europeans arrived, right? Empty land, no people, no culture, just wonderful animals and wonderful food. Still the pre-colonial people are threatened with extinction in Brazil. You take their children, land, culture, and sometimes in ONE generation they are gone. That is history, that is truth, that is education, and that is Brazil's shame. Don't think the rest of the world is not watching. Just some want to be your friends because your easy and they can use you.

Now it is our turn to open a bottle of expensive French wine and continue figuring out how to help the poor people of Brazil.

In the custom of my fathers, I am known to have several glasses of port wine, but when I'm 'drinking', it's vodka. In my life I am sure I have never purchased a bottle of French wine, even as I studied French for 4 years.

You see, the only solution I have ever espoused for Brazil, as well as for the US, is the truth. I cannot feed it to the poor. I cannot clothe them or shelter them with it. If the TRUTH helps one of YOU to look at one of THEM as one of US...I'm done.

Brazil is a racist society with the ruling Caucasian class living mainly to the south of Sao Paulo.

Excuse me, the "Ruling Caucasian class" lives in São Paulo and NORTH of it. Since the "Murderous Generals" gave up power in 1985, here are the names of the Presidents:

1985-90: Sarney from Maranhão, currently an elected senator from Amapa.
1990-92 : Collor (born in Rio,but comes from Alagoas) .Currently a senator from Alagoas.
1992-94 : Itamar Franco, (from MG) current whereabouts unknown.
1994-2002: FHC- Born in Rio, but he lived in France for years and after returning from his "Self Exile", he made his political career in S.Paulo
2002- : Lula. Born in Pernambuco and started his career in S.P

All these "Caucasian" gentlemen and their clans belong to the ruling class and the Southerner lost their voice a long time ago. It may be worthwhile adding that the "one person in the government who speaks the truth clearly" is also a "Caucasian" gentleman from Pernambuco. In principle, he should have more voice, since he belongs to that elite group, but I cant figure out why he is not talking about corruption in the government (for that matter, in all segments of the society).

"Ruling Caucasian class"

Poor choice of words, my friend. I should have said the oligarchs, wealthy, and elites. However, we are at odds as to who rules. The president of the country does not necessarily rule the nation. In many ways that person is just a figurehead for the policies put forward by those who control the wealth of the nation. Under the dictatorship it was very clear who 'ruled', but under the democracy we prefer who 'represented'. Not the same thing, and not significant in terms of the roles of Whites, Blacks, and Morenas. Frankly, we all know where the power is, where the money is, and who controls the economy; everything else is window dressing.

Dear João,

Actually I met Dr. Chua before the sex scandal and he looks calm and very gentleman. Now he said he wanted to be a normal person and not someone of a high status in the society.......I wish Sarkozy would say something like that...........especially judging from his performance.....now I heard Man Mohan Singh is having the headache because he just don't know how to greet Bruni............

Anyway back to the sex scandal, the police and few detectives are still investigating his case........by the way here is the article about the Brazilian multiple-launch rocket system (MLRS). When this report was leaked to the press, I was still a student at the Virtual University............

Malaysia's defence purchases will not spark arms race, says analyst

KUALA LUMPUR April 16, 2002 - While Malaysia's recent defence purchases have been viewed cautiously by certain parties, the move cannot be seen as sparking an arms race in the region, said a local defence analyst.

He said that it was unfair to accuse Malaysia of starting an arms race as there were countries in the region that had been spending lavishly on defence even during the financial crisis.

In fact, he said, Malaysia's move to procure new defence equipment had been widely anticipated as the country's economic condition improves.

"Whenever Malaysia spends money on defence, it will always be seen as an arms race but when Singapore does the same thing, everybody will stay quiet," said the analyst, who declined to be named, in an interview with Bernama.

Malaysia's billion-ringgit arms purchase is contrary to a period during the Asian financial crisis in 1997 when defence expenditure was slashed and modernisation programmes of its armed forces were halted.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has said that the purchases were to upgrade and replace the armed forces' obsolete equipments and not aimed at matching the capability of other countries' forces.

Last year, Malaysia restarted its armed forces modernisation programmes with a procurement of 22 G5 155mm howitzer from South Africa and an undisclosed number of multiple-launch rocket system (MLRS) from Brazil.

The country has also bought an anti-tank missile and shoulder-launch anti-aircraft missiles from Russia and Pakistan.

The defence analyst said that Malaysia's yearly defence expenditure was modest at 2.5 per cent to its growth domestic product (GDP) compared to 6 per cent by Singapore.

Despite being the smallest nation in Southeast Asia, the island republic, he said, possessed one of the largest and most technologically-advanced military in the region.

Singapore, he said, had four American-made early warning aircraft, four submarines as well as more than 370 light tanks and hundreds of main battle tanks in its inventory.

Former Deputy Chief of Army, Lt Jen (Rtd) Datuk Seri Ali Alwi said that the recent purchases of weaponary by Malaysia were a culmination of years of planning by the armed forces.

"It will not spark an arms race in the region as the procurement was planned years ago," he said.

The procurement of weaponary, said Ali, was also a way for the military to keep abreast with the fast-evolving technology.

Meanwhile, Jane's Defence Weekly's land forces editor Christopher F. Foss said that Malaysia's recent arms procurement had definitely improved the firepower of the its armed forces.

The army in particular, he said, had been trying in recent years to upgrade its capabilites and the purchases during the just-ended Defence Services Asia '02 as well as before the exhibition were certainly "a shot in the arm".

"(As a result of the new purchases), your armed forces are going to have an improved capability than 10 years ago," Foss said when met recently.

"That (procurement of G5 and MLRS-system) has considerably increased the range and firepower of your (Malaysian armed forces') artillery," said Foss, adding that Malaysia had also placed orders for an additional six G5 howitzers.

The G5 howitzer has a range of 40km using standard ammunition but can reach 50km using the rocket-assisted projectile while the Brazilian-MLRS has a maximum range of 90km.

The MLRS can also launch longer-range tactical surface-to-surface missiles.

Foss said that Malaysia's air defence capability had also received a boost with an agreement to acquire an undisclosed number of Jernas low-altitude anti-aircraft missiles from the European defence consortium, MBDA.

The 220 million pound-sterling deal which was inked during DSA '02, said Foss, was a significant step to Malaysia's air defence system as it gave them "a whole new capability they never had before."

The regiment-strong Jernas will be delivered to the Malaysian armed forces in three years.

The modern Jernas short-range air defence system (Shorads) and Igla V-Shorads will complement earlier armed forces' purchases of Pakistani-made Anza Mk-11 and Thales' Starburst shoulder-launch surface-to-air missiles.

Brazilian multiple-launch rocket system (MLRS).

The RAF scrambled to intercept eight Russian nuclear bombers heading for Britain yesterday in the biggest aerial confrontation between the two countries since the end of the Cold War.

The Tupolev-95 Bear bombers were approaching in formation when they were met by four Tornado F3 fighter jets. Defence sources said that the Russian pilots turned away as soon as they spotted the approaching Tornados and did not enter British airspace. September 7, 2007 RAF intercepts eight Russian bombers as Putin provokes West.

João, during the training near the border (The Lion State) the Brazilian tornado is truly special. Instead of being lauched as Mr. Putin Tupolev-95 Bear bombers, the Brazil Tornado looks like common army trucks but when being parted open into half, it will be changed into a deadly tornado attacks from the ground level. I don't know why my government refuse to show the photo of such tornado online.............

What I read (and couldn't believe) was the article title "Brazil Poised to Become World's Second Bloodiest Producer Behind Germany". I avoided opening up the article because I just didn't want to hear it / see it. With this MLRS mentioned above and other meant to be used to destroy things type articles Brazil is striving to become the world's one stop shop for, maybe my bifocals didn't cause a miscue in thought. Only peaceful hey?

The best way to learn French is to listen to the songs of Edith Piaf. I bet you can buy the CDs in any store in K-in-Pur.

.c' est la vie

To learn how to pronounce this, you should listen to the record of Emerson,Lake and Palmer.

I found that in general , it is cheaper to buy CDs, Tapes, etc; of Western Music in Asian countries.

Hope I was of some help. smilies/cheesy.gif

If you are "watching" this nonsense then you are f**king blind

Again, there is no history before the Europeans arrived, right? Empty land, no people, no culture, just wonderful animals and wonderful food. Still the pre-colonial people are threatened with extinction in Brazil. You take their children, land, culture, and sometimes in ONE generation they are gone. That is history, that is truth, that is education, and that is Brazil's shame. Don't think the rest of the world is not watching. Just some want to be your friends because your easy and they can use you.

It makes no sense to create a "history" before the Europeans arrived because there was no Brazil then. The territory had thousands of tribes spread all over the place that would fight each other. They were pre-historic, i.e., they had no alphabet and therefore kept no records of anything. They wouldn't be able to tell is something happened last week or last decade because the notion of time runs differently in such societies.

The Portuguese did for Brazil what the Romans did for Europe. They took this bunch of warring tribes and gave them a culture in order to grow from there.

The indians weren't extinct, but they were assimilated. Do you want to see them? I am sure they are somewhere in my DNA, you just have to look for it. This assimiliation is the only way for building this nation of Brazil, and we should continue that until all of them are assimilated.

A Tribute To Napoléon Bonaparte or is it Ali Napoléon Bonaparte ?
written by angelinajolie, January 11, 2008
"I hope the time is not far off when I shall be able to establish a uniform regime based on the principles of Qur'an,” Napoléon Bonaparte

Born on the 15th of August 1769, Napoléon Bonaparte was able to shape modern European history with his military innovations and war tactics that enabled him to lead several successful campaigns against the First and Second Coalition.

The French leader, who died in May 1821, was a general during the French Revolution, the ruler of France as First Consul of the French Republic, Emperor of the French, King of Italy, Mediator of the Swiss
Confederation and Protector of the Confederation of the Rhine. His campaigns are studied at military academies all over the world and he is widely regarded as one of history's greatest commanders.

Regardless of whether he was a fair leader or not, one of the most impressive aspects regarding Napoléon Bonaparte was his admiration of Islam.

Bonaparte first learnt about Islam in 1789, when he proposed a military expedition to seize Egypt -- then a province of the Ottoman Empire -- in order to protect French trade interests and undermine Britain's access to India.

It has been reported that while in Egypt, Bonaparte took part in several religious ceremonies and held meetings with Muslim clerics.

Many quotes suggest that Bonaparte was a serious admirer of Islam:

"Moses has revealed the existence of God to his nation. Jesus Christ to the Roman world, Muhammad (PBUH) to the old continent,”

"I hope the time is not far off when I shall be able to unite all the wise and educated men of all the countries and establish a uniform regime based on the principles of Qur'an which alone are true and which alone can lead men to happiness,” Napoléon Bonaparte as quoted in Christian Cherfils, ‘Bonaparte et Islam,’ Pedone Ed., Paris, France, 1914, pp. 105, 125.

Many historians discussed Bonaparte’s admiration of Islam, while others debated whether he converted to Islam or not.

‘Satanic Voices - Ancient and Modern’ by David M. Pidc**k stated that the then official French Newspaper, Le Moniteur, carried the accounts of Bonaparte’s conversion to Islam in 1798 C.E.

The newspaper even mentioned his new Muslim name, which was ‘Aly (Ali) Napoléon Bonaparte’.

It has also been reported that Bonaparte commended the conversion of his General Jacques Menou, whose Muslim name was ‘Abdullah-Jacques Menou’, who later married an Egyptian, Sitti Zoubeida - who was descended from the line of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

Even if such claims are untrue, it’s clear that Napoleon Bonaparte admired the Islamic (Shari'ah) Law and attempted to apply it in his Empire.

It’s interesting that a great leader like Bonaparte admired Islam and its laws, which are much better than the secular laws applied in many countries today.

In fact, some aspects of the Shariah law still exist in the French constitution as the basis for some of their laws taken from the Code Napoléon.

A well-known case like the fatal car accident of Diana, Princess of Wales, and Dodi al-Fayed can best illustrate this. "The photographers were charged with an old part of the French Jurisprudence, for ‘not helping at the scene of an accident’- which is taken from the Shari'ah Law of Imam Malik." (David M. Pidc**k, 1998 C.E.)
