Brazilian Politics Leonard Cohen Style PDF Print E-mail
2009 - January 2009
Written by John Fitzpatrick

Chief of staff, Dilma Rousseff Whenever I try to follow the ins and outs of Brazilian politics with its strange alliance, plots, duplicity and subterfuge I think of the verse from Leonard Cohen's song "Everybody Knows" that goes: "Everybody knows that you love me baby / Everybody knows that you really do / Everybody knows that you've been faithful / Ah give or take a night or two / Everybody knows you've been discreet / But there were so many people / you just had to meet / Without your clothes / And everybody knows."

We are watching the unraveling at the moment of a number of plots and betrayals which everybody knows about but turns a blind eye to. First of all, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is trying to foist his preferred presidential candidate, Dilma Rousseff, onto the electorate, regardless of whether anyone wants her or not.

Secondly, São Paulo state governor, José Serra, has bribed one of his main rivals, Geraldo Alckmin, by giving him a top job in his administration, thereby ensuring that Alckmin does not block Serra's presidential ambitions. And thirdly, former President José Sarney is trying to become the Senate chairman by pretending he does not really want the job.

Lula has been singing the praises of Dilma Rousseff, his chief of staff, for over a year now although he always claims he has not even asked her if she even wants to be the Workers Party (PT) presidential candidate. Presumably the PT has mechanisms for choosing its candidates, which actually involve taking the views of the rank and file members into consideration.

If so, then Lula is not interested. Neither is Dilma who has recently changed from an Ugly Duckling to a very fine swan indeed, thanks to a nose job, a diet, a nip and tuck, a new hair style and contact lens instead of her old specs. Instead of the frumpy thin-lipped apparatchik of old we now have an attractive mature woman who could easily win a glamorous granny competition.

Despite her cosmetic change, Dilma has still not announced her interest in being a presidential candidate although she is expected to begin a marathon round of public appearances in February in which she will unveil works for the so-called Accelerated Growth Program. Nor has she made any speeches on what she stands for, presumably because she feels she can get by on Lula's coat-tails.

However, one thing that everybody knows is that the Brazilian people will not be so naïve as to turn out and vote for someone just because she is Lula's favorite. And another thing that everybody knows is that Lula could dump Dilma from one moment to the next if he feels like it, particularly if he succumbs to the flattering pressure from his admirers and alters the Constitution to allow him to stand again. This may seem far-fetched but it cannot be discounted even at this late stage.

As for Serra, he may feel he has pulled off a great coup by tempting Alckmin into the fold and dangling the prospect of Alckmin succeeding him as governor when he presumably stands for the presidency in 2010. However, Alckmin's star waned when he fought a disastrous campaign for the PSDB against Lula in 2006 and was lucky not to be beaten in the first round.

He was also humiliated in the race for the São Paulo mayorship last year when Serra supported the candidate of the rival DEMs. The PSDB also has another strong candidate in the governor of Minas Gerais state, Aécio Neves, who does not think Serra has a divine right to be the party's candidate.

In fact, Serra and Neves were almost as much to blame for the PSDB's failure to win the presidency by letting Alckmin force himself on the party. Lula is not the only politician to disdain his own party. The PSDB big wigs - Serra, Neves, Alckmin and ex-President Fernando Henrique Cardoso - made the decision on who would be the party's candidate without seeking the views of the ordinary members. What everybody knows is that Serra is desperate to be president and will do anything to achieve this aim.

As for Sarney, most Brazilians are desperate to see the back of him. He was one of a series of unimpressive presidents, along with Fernando Collor de Mello and Itamar Franco, who held power after the generals handed control back to civilian politicians. Sarney is a Northeastern old-timer who represents everything that holds Brazil back and has been a powerbroker for almost 50 years.

Although he became president simply because the elected president, Tancredo Neves, died before assuming office, Sarney managed to extend the term of office from four to five years. He has already been Senate chairman, leads a faction of the PMDB, has allies and supporters in high places and has great power and influence.

He has an unusual tactic which is to stand above the fray - in public, that is - and say he will only agree to be nominated if there is common consent. This means that he virtually forces himself on Congress through backroom carrot and stick negotiations. Everybody knows that behind that avuncular, amiable exterior lies a ruthless, Machiavellian mind which is only interested in gaining power and holding onto it.

That is the sad state of the Brazilian political scene as we head into an economic crisis and prepare for a presidential election next year.

Let's finish by quoting another verse from Leonard Cohen which sums the situation up perfectly:

"Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows"

A well written article describing the current political scenario.

Absolutely correct. He may also project himself as a "viable" alternative Presidential candidate or sponsor his daughter! Though most Brazilians are "desperate" to see the back of him, he is not yet ready to show it!!

And another thing that everybody knows is that Lula could dump Dilma from one moment to the next if he feels like it.

Right now, it seems unlikely as the following link says clearly:

http://www.estadao.com.br/naci...5636,0.htm

Here is a better shot of our future President than the one published in this article:

Instead of the frumpy thin-lipped apparatchik of old we now have an attractive mature woman who could easily win a glamorous granny competition.

She would easily defeat Marta in this so called "Glamorous Granny Competition". My vote is for Dilma and so should be yours.

José Sarney was elected as the President of the Senate. That does change the political scenario for 2009/2010. Would be interesting to hear the views of our friend Ricardo Amaral.

Of course the Brazilian electorate consist of millions of gullable naive "ignoramuses"... They could be EASILY manipulated into one way or another, particularly if Lula "is persuaded" (as if he has not yet made up his mind) to attempt the have the constitution amended.
THE ONLY REASON THE PERNANBUCO CLOWN RULER HAS NOT YET MADE HIS MOVE (about the constitutional amendment) IS BECAUSE SARNEY AND THE SENATE (SUPPORTED BY THE VALIANT BRAZILIAN ARMED FORCES WOULD NEVER EVER LET HIM PROCEED!!!! IN FACT, NOW I WISH HE WOULD ACTUALLY TRY TO DO IT, FOR IT MAY BE JUST WHAT IT WILL TAKE FOR THE ENTIRE FILTHY LABOR PARTY TO BE PUT TO AN END!!!!

I asked Bo and he gave some instructions which didn't work with my IE browser. Then I experimented with my Firefox and Google Chrome browsers and it worked perfectly. Just right click the mouse on the picture and "Copy the Image location". Then left click the 6th Icon on this site and do a "paste" operation. Bingo, you can reproduce any image in your PC pr another website.

Number of States won by:

Democrats: 19

Republicans: 29

Square miles of land won by:

Democrats: 580,000
Republicans: 2,427,000

Population of counties won by:

Democrats: 127 million
Republicans: 143 million

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by:
Democrats: 13.2
Republicans: 2.1

Professor Olson adds: In aggregate, the map of the territory Republican won by Republicans was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country.

Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government welfare.

Professor Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the "complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.

there is a lot more open land in those republican states , especialy in utah , montana, the dekotas...

by the way, ghettos in the big north east usa cities was totaly and maliciously created by the government (local municiples also) and the real estate industry to create white flight.which totaly exasporated welfare.....hey man. its a new era, all that republican crap about welfare and social programs being wrong is bs...

havent you just seen what happended ? republican style greedy hyper capatalism has just tanked the usa!! the big rich cats are getting a social bail out, i think the regular and poor common man/woman needs social programs . the real problem with welfare was it was abused. if it was carefully monotored , im all for it.

f**k hyper capitalism, im for capitalism with social programs...
yes it was taken from a web site FOX news
written by forrest allen brown, February 09, 2009
now tell me as to why people that work have to take a
drug test to keep there jobs !!
and people that are on the social programs dont have to ??

and yes the bail out is killing the working man as i said before
to me a wage and bouns cap should be placed on every person in the US .
from politicans to CEO of the blue chip stocks on down the line .

why if a company you lead lost millions or even billions should you get a 6 digit bouns , the working person would be fired .

Look at raido shack they have laied off dozens of people in the main office in Fort Worth but yet the new boss from block buster made up a job for one of his friends at 100.000 a year ,

look at doctors working with medcaid they jack up the price of the drugs , and treatment to 5 times higher than one that only works with insurances compaines , and yet he US government does nothing to stop it .

look at the new bail out package it has more pork barrell projects that the dems wanted for the last 40 years than one can think of .

the public should take charge of the bail out as it is there money that is
being thrown out to big business and they are the ones loseing there
low paying jobs

and costinha no matter what i am i am far better than you

it sounded like foz news...
written by asp, February 09, 2009
man, its too late for republicans (not saying you are) to cry about the huge amount of money needed in the bailout. it was republican policies that got the usa in this mess.they need dramatic action that is against the grain . obama has already given in too much to republicans whining in order to try to be partison

but, he shouldnt. he ought to walk right over them. it is their mentality that has failed the united states.they need to just get the f**k out of the way and let people try to fix it.

nobody is going to be happy about it....tough s**t, tough s**t for republicans, tough s**t for people who want obama to favor palistinians over gaza, tough s**t for people who want obama to stop the blocade, it aint gonna happen he would loose the next election because of the florida cuban vote.they need to just shut up for a few years and get out of the way and let obama do what he can

forrest, people like you ought to be seething about what bush and his administration did.people should want him and his administration and maddoff and others , heads sauteed in garlic and onions on a silver platter. they stretched the rectums of most all americans. it is just perplexing to see people compaining about what is happening now when the bush and co took the country to the lowest level in our lifetime...

not a party person am way out of the box .

would not waste the garlic and onions on them
and most the people i know have sold the silver platter

as i say all along thoes whom make the rules should be held
to them to the higest stantards and CEOS and others should
have every thing taken from them sold the money should be then divied up to repay the ones that were robed , and i do also mean from there kids , wives , exwives , other business , make them think welfare is rich.
and just a note dont use lawyers use people with MBAS to do the deal
as most congressman are thoes bottom fedders and protect there own

Obama should not kiss ass but kick some ass starting with congress , big business let them go broke make them work for a living , by the people baling out the auto ,banks, and others does it not make us stock holders ????

and on the gaza deal even though the US was not involved the arabs drug us into there fight , just to get the backing of others in the
gulf states to help. that war is never ending as none of them can say
what they are fighting over started 2000 years ago .

CUBA we need to just stop the dry feet law as you said the cubans control the vote in florida and not one politican wants to offend the
latin vote .

But to me Our president OBAMA should start holding any and all to there word from every day persons to politicans and governments of other lands
ha , yeah ,i wouldnt waste the onions and garlic either...
written by asp, February 09, 2009
and, for sure it feels horible to be bailing out banks and rich ceos, unfortunatly, its something has to be done...

i mean i liked what some guy answering a new york times blog said that instead of bailing out the banks , just devide it among all the people. it would be a huge sum of money and for sure everyone would spend it....but, that is a fantacy situation....same with legalise pot, by god , a billion dollar industry would materialise out of nowhere and kick start the economy for sure....but, aint gonna happen

i just think we are going to have to swallow a hell of a lot of things we dont like or agree with, but, i trust obama more than i ever could bush...i want to give him a chance...

Forest (late reply) - Moving further & further towards the Right side... (after a fashion)
written by Augustus, February 12, 2009
For the second time today, I'm breaching my recent undertaking to stay (and remain) away from this blog for a while.

Yet, because my political views are very “mixed” depending on the topic (or even on the particular feature of the topic”, perhaps some of what I have written (and shall continue writing) will appear puzzling….

Firstly (and foremost) – the Voting “formula” for the USA, which I also oppose (although comprehend the reason given the fact it was written in the late 18th Century), was established by the Founding Fathers. Quite frankly, I am 100% opposed to the principle of the Winner “by State” (state winner gets all the congressional votes) – It’s absurd! Yet, for the 18th Century, it was the most democratic system on the planet!

Secondly, since I was not born as a US citizen (but rather became about 10 years ago) – even though my circumstances are not quite comparable to the overwhelming majority of fellow immigrants – I cannot say that I oppose immigration without being a Hypocrite. NONETHELESS, one must admit that the sad (decaying) circumstances of this former wealthy nation have changed! Therefore, I must agree with you that it appears absurd to blindly keep allowing potentially future “Aid” recipients into this country; after all, the “party IS over” and there isn’t much of the Pie to be shared with others…

Then, I must agree with ASP about his comments on the Republicans, whose EXCEEDINGLY hypocritical behavior is simply nothing short of SHAMEFUL. How dare they attempting to attack President’s Obama spending incentives, given the SHAMEFUL eternal (concealed) bale-out of the Criminal Bush administrations (YES, I meant Father & son – although nothing can be as bad as Junior’s – LOL)

Finally, I must confess once again, the realization of my continuous drift towards the right (with the sole exception of SOCIAL issues), to the point, that I would readily welcome significant increase in the liberties of American Citizens for the sake of protection against the MURDEROUS Islamic World, as well as to the re-establishment of a Military Government in Brazil, for the sake of preserving Liberty from the Scornful deeds of Socialist Parties…

(P.S. – I have typed this text, quickly, while taking a break from work – with no time for editing… As such, please SPARE me with criticisms on misspellings or accidental grammatical errors)

On military...
written by Shelly1, February 16, 2009
I am not in favor of military intervention. For two simple reasons. First, we need accountability from top-to-bottom. We should have a system in Brazil that allows a president to stay ONLY if he/she is being useful and helping the country. Finally, re-election should be decided not only by the people, but by an independent body, say a higher office withing the judicial system. We need to re-invent politics, too much power in the hands of an illiterate and unschooled president can only brew disaster. Some of you like to call Americans stupid, please, at least idiot Bush went to Yale (daddy probably had to do a lot with this).

Brazilians are complacent as such, will never feel that they are responsible for the way the country is going. You have the president you deserve.

ALERT TO ALL BLOGGERS AGAINST EXTREME RIGHT WING INFILTRATION ==>> HIS MOST COMMON ALIAS = "DOUBLE DOT"
written by Augustus, February 26, 2009
Several bloggers in Brazzil.com have recently been repeatedly afflicted and abused by a certain element whose most “common” alias is Double.Dot. He seems to be particularly engaged into antagonizing non-Americans and particularly those of us who reside in the United States.

After some originally misplaced theories, suggested by various regular contributors to this blog, I decided to conduct some additional research, and recently came across a very serious and dangerous threat to the United States of America, since the election of Mr. Obama. It consists of an Extreme Faction of the hideous KKK whose recent alliance with other Racist Militant elements in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and other southern/southwestern states have declared war against all foreigners, particularly those of Jewish, Latin American, and African background. They are composed of mostly very low class, uneducated WHITE TRASH, whose sole mystical way to elevate themselves of their sordid low-birth condition, is to base a fictitious “superiority” based upon race.

Well, I think all of us should make an effort to bring this dangerous elements to the attention NOT ONLY of this blog’s management, BUT ALSO to various US agencies which monitor the activity of HATE GROUPS in America, of which this LOWLY undesirable element, recently known as Double- Dot is unquestioningly either a member or a sympathizer (if not an outright infiltrator) who acts on this horrific, hateful Extremist Group’s behalf on blogs managed in the USA by non-Americans of certain background. Given this blog’s title “Brazzil.com” I fear it became an obvious target.

It disgusts me having even spent a second of my time arguing with such Trash of incalculable malice, who FAILS to recognize that we are all born ALIKE as Human Beings (but STOP being alike from the moment of birth onwards, as they are inculcated Hatred by their uneducated parents and families who teach them the glories or White Race superiority INSTEAD of Moliere; sabotage instead of calculus, malice instead of Greek Philosophy!

SWIFT ACTION IS REQUIRED, I URGE EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU TO JOIN A CRUSADE AGAINST THIS HATEFUL ELEMENT!
