How the Dumb Blonde Is Outsmarting the Dumb Portuguese in Brazil PDF Print E-mail
2009 - January 2009
Written by Joe Moreira da Silva
Thursday, 16 April 2009 00:25

Lady with mustacheI don't believe I heard any blonde jokes before the Web made its debut in Brazil. So another cultural icon is fighting to hold its place in Brazilian culture, the stupid Portuguese. We have hundreds of Portuguese jokes here the same way English speakers have Polish ones. We usually translate Polish as Portuguese in the joke department.

Lots of people search for Polish jokes and convert them into Portuguese ones. So maybe the blondes are fighting a battle for the kingdom of stupidity on both fronts since the Polish won't give up their presidency of the United States of the Stupid that easily, either, no pun on the US intended. And even though I don't have a degree in morology, I can tell it is a vast kingdom with millions of subjects all over the world.

I wonder who the stupid are in other cultures and how they gained the notoriety.

But anyway, do you have any animal that stands for stupidity? In Brazil that animal is the "burro", jackass or just ass in English, that's why we say "loira burra" (LOIdda bOOha), stupid blonde. But the word "burro" (bOOhoo) has become so widespread in this usage that "estúpido" (izTOOpidoo) in Brazilian Portuguese usually means "rude, impolite, crass, uncouth," and not lacking in intelligence or with a supply scarcity in the brains department.

And "mal educado" (mow edookAHdoo) means "rude and not "ill educated". Most people understand ignorante (ignorANGti) as rude and impolite and not ignorant, even though it has this meaning as well, so be careful if you call someone "ignorante" here.

I know calling the Portuguese stupid is a generalization. When people say they are stupid they mean most of them are, not all of them, naturally. If you find a clever one, they'll say he's the exception that proves the rule. Once a stereotype sets in, it is hard to get rid of the stigma. I don't take it seriously, it's just a stereotype, like many others. But I do wonder how they got that reputation.

Some say it's because they traded gold for clothes with the English, others have different explanations. But Joaquim (zhoahKING), Manuel (mungnooEHoo) and Maria (maDDEEa) have been parts of the Brazilian culture for a very long time. They don't make up a threesome, it's just that all the women in the jokes are named Maria.

Do you know why these exemplars of foolishness are called Joaquim and Manuel? Because, people say, 80% of the Portuguese male population are named either Joaquim or Manuel; all the women are named Maria. I guess I'd have to check their phonebook to find out whether that's true. Maybe if you name someone Joaquim, Manuel or Maria in Portugal, you are practically predetermining their coming to Brazil.

That's one of the mysteries nobody can explain. I guess that one "só Freud explica" (saw Frawi dizPLEEka), only Freud can explain, (another way to say God only knows), but "ele foi dessa para melhor" (Eli foi dehssa pra meliAWR), but he went from this one to a better one, in other words, he died, in English people would say, "He went to a better place." Unless he took the elevator down, of course.

Although, I don't think the Portuguese can be overthrown. For instance, we have a one-liner that goes like this: somebody asks you, "Do you know how the Portuguese have oral sex?"

"No, how?"

"They stand in their bedroom and shout at each other, "F**k you!" (Excuse my French)

Yes, it would be hard to convert that into a blonde joke unless we made them lesbians. Yeah, I suppose it can be done since the gay movement gains momentum every year. So I guess Joaquim, Manuel and Maria have their days numbered.

But we have some jokes with mustached women, and Maria sometimes is the butt of it, in other words, she's the one that "toma no rabo" (TONGma nooHAHboo), takes it up the ass, and in Brazilian Portuguese that's always unpleasant, even if you're gay, at least, as an idiom.

I can't imagine a situation I'd make a joke with a mustached blonde, but there aren't many of those jokes anyway, as I said the Marias are not depicted like that so often, so I guess the blondes can take over.

Joaquim and Manuel always sport a voluminous mustachio. Again, I guess if a Portuguese is named Joaquim or Manuel and they wear a mustache, odds are they'll come to Brazil, or as soon as they get here, they'll grow one.

There is a joke honoring the Portuguese mustache.

Somebody goes to the bathroom,"passa um fax" (PAHsa oong fahks), sends a fax (euphemism for defecates), wipes his behind with his finger, goes to a Portuguese guy sleeping on the couch and smears his mustache with the product of his bowel. What a shitty thing to do, wouldn't you say?

A few hours later, Manuel wakes up to an overpowering stench all around him. He can't believe the smell. He goes to the bathroom, no crap in the toilet. He goes to the yard, no dog doo-doo. He looks around the garden, no, the pigeons haven't been crapping like there's not tomorrow all over the place. So he thinks for a moment, and it finally dawns on him, "Shit, somebody crapped in the whole wide world."

Those caricatures of a people are really funny, come to think of it. How come the Portuguese are always of middle-height, wear a mustache, and are hairy and stupid? If somebody can explain that to me I'd appreciate it.

By the way, if you're Portuguese and are not named Manuel, Joaquim or Maria, come say hi.

But I wouldn't mind trading an old mustached Portuguese for a beautiful stupid blonde, and I believe the Portuguese see that as something good, too. But maybe a stupid Blonde Maria will come along and become the unequaled, consummate ultimate Queen of the Stupid.

And then we'll all say, "Long Live Queen Maria!"

Portuguese also have brazilian stereotypes
written by Manueletuga, April 16, 2009
This makes me laugh...especially as I am Portuguese. This is even more ironic considering how Brazilian women are all over Portuguese men like a bad rash...they must like dumb men with moustaches. Not sure where they get their facts about Portuguese - Let me see - Ronaldo is the shortest player in Manu U - he has a mustache? Could it be due to the low level of education and poverty in Brasil that they simply don't know better? Also the President of the European Commission is Portuguese - he is called Manuel - I wonder if Lula would tell him some portuguese jokes?
Well done, sô Silva

French people also have jokes about the Portuguese. My favourite is the one where they ask how do you differentiate the bride and groom in a Portuguese wedding: they have the nicest training suites of all. smilies/cheesy.gif Or the other one where you fold a napkin in a triangle and put it over your hair: Yes, it's a Portuguese woman in underwear. smilies/grin.gif But this is funnier than the reality. The Portuguese aren't funny. I know. I'm one. smilies/wink.gif Would Joe Silva by any chance be one (descendant) too? smilies/cool.gif

Jose real name is- Giuseppe Morrera da Silvana- he really meant to write about the italian "wops" "hairy women" "macho men" with their mustaches, etc. to prove their manhood; that he's part of, but since he lives in a Portuguese speaking country, he had to lie, embelish the truth.
I suggest you watch "I Love Lucy" & how Italians are depicted & read american stories/histories as they are known as the biggest "trash/wops" that ever went to the U.S.A.
No wonder your ugly, short & fat & a shrink a ling i'm sure.
How sad that after all these years your obsession still prevails.
You ride a motorcycle, not a car; you should graduate to a "bycicle".
Now go on & put your "chifres" on & cry like a baby for more.....
The Portuguese
written by Sergio T, April 18, 2009
The funniest Portuguese jokes I ever heard were from my Portuguese grandfather (I am Brazilian). That puzzled me when I was a kid, why would he joke that way about himself? Well, he was highly educated, pretty smart and funny Portuguese intellectual and cared less for things like that.

There are two Portuguese Nobel prizes known: one in medicine and the other in literature. Brazil has none. Camoes was Portuguese not Brazilian. The Caravel was invented by the Portuguese and there are two brilliant known Portuguese physicists in England today. The Portuguese were once considered to be great navigators, etc.

Finally, the Portuguese does not write dumb articles like this one from José Moreira da Silva: a Brazilian with a typical Portuguese name.

Brazilian is very diferent from Portuguese. Brazilians are mutts!

WASHINGTON, June 22 — A little-known fact: A version of the Internet was invented in Portugal 500 years ago by a bunch of sailors with names like Pedro, Vasco and Bartolomeu. The technology was crude. Links were unstable. Response time was glacial. (A message sent on their network might take a year to land.) They put up with it all. They were hungry to gain access to the world.

The colonization process impacts the MOST basic relations of a society and therefore its effects are profound and long-standing. If that is not easy for you to understand maybe you should consider other more recent Portuguese colonization such as of Angola, whose independence happened around 1975. Do you think that the result of your country's colonization still has any effect on such a country?????? In Brazil's case, its independence occurred without the population even noticing it because it was carried out by an elite of aristocrat farmers who were also the politicians and local judges. The infamous 'voto de cabresto' is alive till today and is the reason corrupt politicians are placed in power. Ignorant and poor citizens sell their vote for a meal ticket valid for one whole year. on those times, they would sell it for a cow...

Portuguesecolonial power structures, political (with village secretaries, or the like) and legal (with landowners as town judges) were transmitted to the imperial Brazil (independent), whose Portuguese emperors maintained and reinforced even more power centralization. When landowners of Portuguese descent established the republican structure in Brazil, again a bunch of them (ONLY farmer of Portuguese descent)took turns as Brazil’s president (política do café com leite), only white, land owners were allowed to vote and work as politicians. All that until the republican revolution with Getúlio Vargas 1930 and the coup d’etat in 1964 which took Joao Goulart, supposed communist, out of power (American imperialism). the fight for power in Brazil has always been very oppressive, since Portuguese people. Only a civil revolution would change that, which happened but then... the dictatorship came. The smart Portuguese emperors managed to contract our famous foreign debt and submitted Brazil to England’s power. Additionally, there are 300 years of slavery in a 500-year-old country, no farmer wanted to pay workers until 1888, almost the 20th century! Barb, let’s not say Portuguese people don't share any responsibility in creating the grand fevela eh?

i for one woudl welcome the country changing it's language, i can't see why they haven't done it, i wue woudl be so proud to disassociate my country & language to them; i find it funny how most braizlians feel that their coutnry was blessed by GOD, well i thing every country is blesseed by GOD, the difference is what those countries do for themselves.

Give it up until you & your country changes it's tune you will never get anywhere, look at INDIA, i don't doubt for a second that they have & will surpass brazil in all.
As for Angola, ask the people that lived there & the quality fo life they had? Actually many Portuguese & others among Brazuca's are going ther again to help build what the CIVIL WAR DESTROYED, not the Portuguese.

Portugal Poor & Unsure...

Full Article at: http://www.nytimes.com/1987/03...urope.html

On a narrow cobblestone street in this capital of peeling paint and faded glories, some 30 Portuguese wearing heavy shoes and cloth caps were huddled in a small bar one recent night singing of loyal mothers, lost loves and better times.

As one after another opened his heart and poured out his soul over three-cent cups of rough wine, 73-year-old Carlos Reis could resist no longer. He said his doctor had prohibited him from singing because of a bad heart, but the music was fado, Portuguese folk music.

Mr. Reis closed his eyes and began to the strum of a guitar. ''I don't pass the night well without fado,'' he sang, his voice clear and sonorous. ''I don't pass the night well without wine.''

It was a haunting echo of a melancholy that permeates this entire country of 10 million people. The Portuguese call it saudade, which is defined as part nostalgia for the past, part longing for the future and part uncertainty about today. 'People Are Afraid'

In the second year of Portugal's membership in the European Community, and the 13th year since a revolution brought the country democracy, it is that uncertainty that to an outsider seems to grip the nation.

Both in and out of the Social Democratic Government of Prime Minister Anibal Cavaco Silva, there is an uncertainty whether the country, arguably the most backward in Western Europe, can compete economically inside Europe and integrate culturally into its Western liberal traditions.

''People are afraid today,'' Antonio Barreto, a sociologist and leading Socialist member of Parliament, said in an interview. ''We have no choice now but to go into Europe, and that is where we belong. But it is a challenge and a threat. Myself, I'm not optimistic about how easy it will be.''

Portugal is a country still rural, a land of whitewashed villages, women in black and farmers pulling oxcarts loaded with cork. Its per capita income of less than $3,000 is only half that of neighboring Spain and a fifth that of West Germany. Illiteracy is high; sociologists say nearly 40 percent of children drop out of school after the fourth grade. The Health Ministry reports that as recently as four years ago only 43 percent of Portuguese homes had an indoor bathroom.

Nearly a quarter of Portugal's work force lives by farming, forestry and fishing, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Yet farming is so primitive and the land so poor that the country imports more than half of its food.

''The problem,'' said Luisa Schmidt, a researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences, ''is building a modern society on top of an archaic structure.''

Many older and rural Portuguese, tied to their villages, do not see the need for change. Suspicious of Western free-market values, Manuel Justino Pereira, a 61-year-old farmer, defended bartering and price supports in an interview last year. ''We have our own economy,'' he said. ''It always can be made to be enough.''

It is a folk conservatism related to saudade, which many Portugese thinkers say is the greatest obstacle to overcoming the country's backwardness. ''Saudade is as Portugese as cod and potatoes,'' Jose Saraiva, a cultural historian, said in an interview. ''It's also our greatest evil.'' Middle Class Is Assertive

Confronting the old attitudes is a more aggressive middle class that is emerging under the banner of pragmatism and modernism. It is a consumer-minded class that listens to the latest English music, goes to the latest American movies and creates fashions and paintings of its own.

Mr. Cavaco Silva, an ascetic 47-year-old former Finance Minister, and many in his centrist Government have come to personify this new attitude.

''I can't stand fado,'' Carlos Alberto Pimenta, the 31-year old Secretary of State for Environment and Natural Resources, said in an interview.

Mr. Pimenta particularly has created a stir. His announcement that 1,300 summer homes built illegally on national parkland would be torn down was ignored as just another empty Government threat until the bulldozers moved in at 7 A.M. one recent morning, shocking the nation and bringing forth a wave of applause.

No, Paulista, that's just an history account meant to understand our formation. And learn from the past. Colonialism, imperialism, neo-liberalism, slavery mechanisms have a very strong degrading power. We all know that the truth is not to be said, or else retaliation will come your way, that's human nature. Maybe one day we'll learn better?

We have formed into the country you know today. That's a history account meant to understand our formation as Brazilians, our current social structure, our current political structure, our current legal structure, our elites, our official ideology, etc, e.g. our formation as a country. Many Brazilians understand the meaning of the word 'formation' when it comes to Brazil and what this word implies. You seem to have many questions, Paulista, I'd recommend readings like Roberto da Mata, Sergio Buarque de Hollanda, Gilberto Freire or Caio Prado Junior.

You see Paulista, it is not the Portuguese that have a problem withthis trash it is them, they ar eobsessed by us, nite & day, that's all they talk about, bec/they can't be us, really.
If they devoted so much time to being productive, Then they would be on their way to soemthing or somewhere, but such is the brazilian pea sixe brain; they just don't get it, that at the end of the day they gain nothing by it at all. They have the power to change things.
Stop this national obsession of the blame game.

In every country in the world, there are jokes about the people of some other country. The French tell Belgian Jokes. The Swedish tell Norwegian jokes (and vice versa), etc., etc. ... and the Brazilians tell Portuguese jokes. So what?

When I saw the title of this article I was hoping some of the comments would have some humor instead of enless bickering and name-calling.

Example of some harmless humor: a Brazilian woman that I know, whose parents were both Portuguese and whose husband is Portuguese calls plastic "Portuguese steel".

Well, look who woke up suddenly, dreaming of eating "bacalhau" wow, how obsessed you are with it.
It's too expensive & high quality for you to ever taste or for that matter anyone to hand it to you, poor kid, ashame you can't afford a shrink, what a piece of crock you are, living oin that sun, day after day, your comments show how much your brazikian brain has shrunk alogn with the rest of the country.
I guess the only way you get wet is by yourself, cause i can't see even any cheal HO giving you a "feijoada". Here is a pix of your neighborhood & you & what you have to reduce yourself to.

Because of Brasil the portuguese had where to run away from their country when Napoleon invaded Europe..
This was first time and only time in history, that a crown of a european country had to flee away from their country, to get shelter in a colony.

Brasil now is much more popular than Portugal. I dont give a s**t about the history though, I am Brazilian and Brasil is a wonderful country, the best in the world probably, but what is a BIG s**t IN THIS COUNTRY IS THE PEOPLE ( Brasileiros ).

We are f**king dumb for not having a good system for our country and to be proud of having a stupid culture. All the Issues of Brasil show that we are all useless M*F*s.

"Because of Brasil the portuguese had where to run away from their country when Napoleon invaded Europe.. This was first time and only time in history, that a crown of a european country had to flee away from their country, to get shelter in a colony".

-Wher are you getting yourinfo from, the latest brazilian edition of school books that omitted countries, etc. You are wron, whetehr they fled or not for any reason, so did other royals in old europe, look @ poland, hungary, chescolovakia, etc. You morran don't know aht you're talking about as expected-.

"Brasil now is much more popular than Portugal. I dont give a s**t about the history though, I am Brazilian and Brasil is a wonderful country, the best in the world probably, but what is a BIG s**t IN THIS COUNTRY IS THE PEOPLE ( Brasileiros )".

-so what if brasil is more popular than Portugal, due to what? that's your opinion, i see brasil popualr in crime, thiefs, cheaters & liars, economically you don't have a better quality of life, or educations system, etc. You certainly don't have a PPP better than Portugal, so what is your piont, that you are a bunch of idiots who like to embelish everything, make yourself's out to be something you're not, you got nothin on the Portuguese at all.
Empires come about & fall, tht's life,a t least we were important in a much bigger spectrum than your favela ever was or will be.
England is smaller than the U.S.A, Spain is smaller than most of their colonies, so it really doesn't matter what size you are, it's wht you do that counts.
After all brazil is such a big country & what does it do for it's people at the end of the day?
size has nothing to do with anything bichina, it's the odacity, strength, strategicness that counts; do you get that.
For those that know & or care to know they know the importance of who is who at the end of the day & that is really what matters, not what you think you are.
so again what is so wonderful about brasil, nothing that i can think of. Better than who in what way? Stop being dilirious, your couuntry doesn't have anything you can't find anywhere else in the country-Start with the Pacific beauty like you have never seen on, go there if you canever afforded in your lifetime & you will think your in heaven.-

"We are f**king dumb for not having a good system for our country and to be proud of having a stupid culture. All the Issues of Brasil show that we are all useless M*F*s."

-Now you're talking, i agree 100% & unitl you & your countrymen realize that & start to do something about it then you'll be on your way to something.-
Here's one for you, brasil is the only country tht i know of that to this day people, students, professors never rise up againt any political government, institution, organization, etc. Look at the rest of South America, every country their people have protested in some way or form & even died for thir believes/causes, etc. Has that happened in brazil in the last 188 years, i think not & Why, i'll tell you why because you're nothing more than a bunch of sizzies/mama's boys. To put it simply there are no men in brasil that any balls left"
And lastly you say your country is wonderful, if it's so wonderful, why are people leaves by high#'s, if they opened the gates, the country would be empty. Stop living in your fantasy world & live in reality of who & your country is. You have paid the price for the wrongful written history & disfavorable historians as to how things occurred or portrayed & until brasil corrects it you will never move forward on a another note, maybe if you stop using all that macumba that woudl be the 2nd step to getting somewhere.
Karma is a bitch, is in it.
Brasil has paid the price & will continue to do so until all of you wake up & smell the coffee that you yourselves are your own worst enemies.

Is it Bacalhau or Linguiça?
written by ...., May 20, 2009
Dear Va(re)gina:

I tend to believe that you subscribe to the second choice… a big thick long linguiça would take care of your issues.

However, I must alert you that in your current Portuguese traditional way (hairy armpit, legs and mustache after first baby), your dream will go unfulfilled. Maybe you should think about westernizing a little bit if you ever stand any chance.

Now, referring to your face and looks, that’s another complete lengthy task at hand. Perhaps you should consider hiring a Brasilian cosmetic surgeon, they can do wonders and have excellent rep**ation worldwide, just as portuguese bacalhau does.

-Bosta, don't be disappointed because i subscribe too both, bacalhau i eat because i can afford it & is high quality & is a specialty; the 2nd i prefer but i already the high quality kind, not the fat, linky, smelly ones you posted, they look like you & the rest of yoru brazikians, they can't do the job.
the portuguese don't use too much fat in theirs, it's 90% meat, thicker & long just enough for the job & their kept in the refrigerator to keepthem moist & juicy & hard; unlike yours with "moscas" all around, no wonder the brazikian women flock to the portuguese sausage,It's quality dear watson, didn't you know that.
-You see FEIO, BRAZIK only has so many plastic surgeons to fix teh uglyness of all of you, since you live in wonderland, believing that you'er beautiful, 90% of the brazikian popualtion is UGLY JUST LIKE YOU, so stop living in LA LA LAND & GROW UP, YOUR JEALOUSY WILL & HAS NOT GOTTEN YOU ANYWHERE.

-that would be a dream come true for you tht i would fit the aove definition wouldn't? but sorry to disappoint you, most brazilian women fit it much more than me. ecause they can't afford to a shaver, ceam, etc.
sorry that you're disappointed, because as much as you like to believe tht it's the truth, you know it isn't? Waht can i say when your country has been brainwashing you since day one to believe soemthing that it isn't.
As for my size i wear a sixe 6, very delicate beautiful feet, i have a pedicure every week, bec i can afford one & don't hae to spend my whole salry liek brazilian women do to look half way decent & see if they can hope to attract TRASH like you; but if you can afford or borrow to buy me z aixe 6 tamaco i will gladly accept them, as i have never been barefoot my whoel life, but then again i rather have you donate them to your poor neighbor she needs them more than i. After all Portuguese people really don't need anything from brazilians, it's te other way around, always asking/begging.
-My toofers look fine, i brush everyday, fo to the dentist every 6 months, etc. Do you? I doubt you can afford to after selling your "popcorn" on the street corner, then taking the bus around the corner to make it look like you made some head way all awhile smelling all that "cc" because brazilians are just so higienic & have such a high buying power to keep themselves.
Grow up & smell the coffee, of all this site all you ever come up with is absurd/twisted responses, no facts, no stats, nothing that you can show off that you're a brazikian with a peanut brain.
All i know is that all i saw while i was in that favela is green/rotten/black teeth, how women can bring themselves to be around men/kids like that is beyond me, but when you need to be with someone they do the -vista grossa- dance, isn't.
Here follow links of your teeth & your countrymen/tranny's, that's exactly how brazilian p[eople teeth look like, no fluoride int he water, no toothpast, no brush, eat without brushing, Lord how your country isn't one bac infection is beyond me, oh i know why it's all the salt water air that kills the bad germs. very entertaining conversations. I am not Portuguese neither Brazilian. I have lived in various countries around the world. I live in Portugal since last year and I confirm that Portuguese are dumb. They would loose their mind over a blond no matter if it is man or woman, with or without mustache. Fatal! Most of the people are pretty basic, retarded or lunatics. The rate of drug use is hideous. Everybody is on the street on closest occasion adn favorable weather. Hardly anything gets done because of many factors and endless and pointless blabbing -which seems to be very typical and traditional. Anyways it seems like all that is good for tourism - yeah, where else can you see such wonders. Maybe in Arab countries or Africa. Phenomenal!smilies/smiley.gifGood luck for proving whatever you Portuguese want to prove about yourself. The fact is that people see the same picture over and over. Also why do you get so defensive when you hear someone criticize you. I can say based on observations - you are afraid that people will not like you, that you will remain isolated, with nowhere to go, lonely or drifted in the ocean. What a comedy!
