Nothing New at Brazil’s New Cabinet

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva invested, March 22, the new Ministers of Planning, Budget and Management, Paulo Bernardo, and of the Social Security, Romero Jucá.

The country was expecting an ample reshuffling of the cabinet, but Lula seems to have postponed those long anticipated changes. Instead he decide for two small substitutions.

Deputy Paulo Bernardo (Worker’s Party [PT] – Southern state of Paraná) replaces Nelson Machado, who temporarily held the position when former Minister Guido Mantega went to the Presidency of the National Bank of Economic and Social Development (BNDES).

Senator Romero Jucá (Party of the Brazilian Democratic Movement – PMDB – which is currently one of the government parliamentary allies) assumes the Ministry of Social Security, replacing Amir Lando, also senator for the same Party, who renounced on the 15th of this month.
