Obama's Debt to His Brazilian Readers PDF Print E-mail
2011 - April 2011
Written by Cristovam Buarque
Tuesday, 26 April 2011 18:52

President Obama's bookBarack Obama owes us another journey to Brazil. Not as president, but as a writer. His presidential duties did not permit him to meet with readers during his recent state visit. And that's too bad because one could say that he wrote a classic, Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance.

Henry Louis Gates, Jr. edited a beautiful book of United States slave narratives. U.S. events in the last few decades will permit the publication of a new collection of narratives of people of African descent, written by those who are experiencing the results of the end of racial segregation.

Transforming themselves into black entrepreneurs, artists, intellectuals and politicians, they are pioneers. Obama's book will be part of this collection of the classic narratives by the first black North Americans to assume outstanding positions in the U.S. society that was, until recently, racist.

But it is not merely an historic opportunity that makes Dreams from My Father a classic; it is also its literary quality, its psychological depth, its political analysis, and, above all, its author's majestic work of reconstructing his life with the life of his father, someone he barely knew.

The trajectory of the son of a black African and a white North American, born and raised in 1960s Hawaii, the book presents the author's childhood, adolescence and early adulthood alongside the trajectory of his father, born in a magical world into occidental standards, from Kenya, a student in the United States, an important public servant, when he returned to his country, who was marginalized due to sudden political changes. All this makes the narrative a book of adventure, of political reflection, of reconstitution of a time, of comparison between social classes and continents.

The book begins with the news of his father's death, received in New York by means of a telephone call from Kenya in the voice of an aunt whom Obama does not know. He hardly knew his own father, who had returned to Kenya when his son was only two years old. And he had come back to Hawaii for a few days when his son was already a teenager. Despite the fact that they had spent so little time together, the author examines his father's influence in the formation of his own racial consciousness, his political creed and his social militancy.

Throughout the years, in readings and conversations, in travels and militancy, he sought his origins; he constructed his consciousness. Through writing, he slowly built a self-analysis of the roots of his political and existential positions, his blackness, his vision of the world from the side of the poor, the excluded, the victims of colonialism.

It is surprising how this young North American gained the perception of an outsider by living in distant Indonesia and in the Chicago neighborhoods of the poor and the blacks. And how the author succeeded in perceiving and showing the connections and antagonisms between the two worlds.

In addition to its beauty and its galvanizing story, the book constructs great characters, recreated by the author's art: his maternal grandparents, white North Americans; his many African siblings and other relatives on the Kenyan side of his family; his colleagues at work; people on the street with whom he socialized; and his mother, the great and discrete heroine, who deserves her own biography. Without her and her decisions, Obama would not exist nor would he have had the opportunity to live his personal adventure.

All this is transmitted in poetic language with images that permit the reader to live in the streets of Chicago, to hear his maternal grandparents' dialogues and doubts in 1960s Honolulu, to witness the debates among radical and moderate black militants, to learn about the anguish and disorientation of those who seek to imitate the colonialists.

In the most emotional chapters, the reader travels through the streets of Nairobi and through the interior of Kenya, socializing with a magical world of brothers and sisters, uncles, aunts, wives of his father's polygamous lifestyle; and, above all, his grandfather, a story that seems to have been written by a Gabriel García Márquez.

Independent of any evaluations that will be made of his presidential administration, Obama's election will continue to be one of the most striking political events of the 21st century.

If this election had never occurred, however, Obama would still remain a great writer due to the theme, the depth, the sincerity, the richness of the text and the plot as he writes about his world, about the socializing and disparity between whites and blacks, America and Africa, colonized and colonialists, about hope and convergence.

Considering his age, he will still be able to write more and pay off the debt that he left with his readers in Brazil when he was unable to meet with them during his recent visit.

Pentagon embarrassed by Anti-bomb plan posted online
written by a.norlina, April 28, 2011
by IT security.be

In what officials admit is a major breach of security, a document describing design features intended to make a new Defense Department building bomb-resistant has been posted on a public government website.

The document, comprising a 30-page narrative and hundreds of pages of technical data, describes bomb-proofing features which were incorporated in the structural design of the Mark Center, a new office complex in Alexandria, Virginia, Around 6,400 Defense Department personnel are scheduled to move into the building later this year.

One of the document’s key points is raising eyebrows among some experts — the building’s level of bomb resistance.

According to the paper, the Mark Center is designed to resist threats posed by vehicle bombs detonated outside the building’s security perimeter carrying the equivalent of 220 pounds (100 kg) of TNT.

That is far less than the amount of explosive used in recent attacks in the United States, including the 1993 bombing of New York’s World Trade Center and 1995 bombing of the Alfred Murrah Federal building in Oklahoma City.

The top and bottom of every page of the 424-page document on the Mark Center is stamped “For Official Use Only” — a label which is supposed to mean that the unclassified document will not circulate outside official channels.

But Reuters found a copy of the report posted on a public website maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps is responsible for the design and construction of a variety of government projects, ranging from office buildings to the flood defense structures meant to protect cities like New Orleans.

The report could be found on the Corps’ public website nearly 24 hours after Reuters advised the Corps and top Pentagon officials that it had been publicly posted. Even after the Pentagon said the document had been taken down from the public website, a version could still be accessed in a Google cache.

A spokesman for the Corps, Ken Wells, said: “This should not have happened. We take it very seriously,”

“SHOULD NOT BE ON THE INTERNET”

Michael Greenberger, a former Justice Department lawyer who heads a Homeland Security institute at the University of Maryland, said the document is a “recipe for an attack. It should not be on the Internet.”

The document would allow potential attackers to examine the building’s bomb-proofing features to pinpoint weaknesses, according to Tom Thurman, a former FBI bomb disposal expert who now teaches security and emergency management at Eastern Kentucky University.
Special report: In cyberspy vs. cyberspy, China has the edge
written by a.norlina, April 28, 2011
(Reuters) -
And at the moment, many experts believe China may have gained the upper hand.Though it is difficult to ascertain the true extent of America's own capabilities and activities in this arena, a series of secret diplomatic cables as well as interviews with experts suggest that when it comes to cyber-espionage, China has leaped ahead of the United States.According to U.S. investigators, China has stolen terabytes of sensitive data -- from usernames and passwords for State Department computers to designs for multi-billion dollar weapons systems. And Chinese hackers show no signs of letting up. "The attacks coming out of China are not only continuing, they are accelerating," says Alan Paller, director of research at information-security training group SANS Institute in Washington, DC.

Secret U.S. State Department cables, obtained by WikiLeaks and made available to Reuters by a third party, trace systems breaches -- colorfully code-named "Byzantine Hades" by U.S. investigators -- to the Chinese military. An April 2009 cable even pinpoints the attacks to a specific unit of China's People's Liberation Army.Privately, U.S. officials have long suspected that the Chinese government and in particular the military was behind the cyber-attacks. What was never disclosed publicly, until now, was evidence.

U.S. efforts to halt Byzantine Hades hacks are ongoing, according to four sources familiar with investigations. In the April 2009 cable, officials in the State Department's Cyber Threat Analysis Division noted that several Chinese-registered Web sites were "involved in Byzantine Hades intrusion activity in 2006."The sites were registered in the city of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province in central China, according to the cable. A person named Chen Xingpeng set up the sites using the "precise" postal code in Chengdu used by the People's Liberation Army Chengdu Province First Technical Reconnaissance Bureau (TRB), an electronic espionage unit of the Chinese military. "Much of the intrusion activity traced to Chengdu is similar in tactics, techniques and procedures to (Byzantine Hades) activity attributed to other" electronic spying units of the People's Liberation Army, the cable says.Reconnaissance bureaus are part of the People's Liberation Army's Third Department, which oversees China's electronic eavesdropping, according to an October 2009 report by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Commission, a panel created by Congress to monitor potential national security issues related to U.S- China relations. Staffed with linguists and technicians, the Third Department monitors communications systems in China and abroad. At least six Technical Reconnaissance Bureaus, including the Chengdu unit, "are likely focused on defense or exploitation of foreign networks," the commission report states.

The precise relationship with the Chinese Army of suspected hacker Chen Xingpeng could not be immediately determined by Reuters. A spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington did not respond to multiple requests for comment. The U.S. State Department declined to comment. But the leaked cables and other U.S. government reports underscore how Chinese and other state-sponsored and private hackers have overwhelmed U.S. government computer networks. In the last five years, cyber-intrusions reported to the U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team, a unit of the Department of Homeland Security, have increased more than 650 percent, from 5,503 incidents in fiscal 2006 to 41,776 four years later, according to a March 16 report by the Government Accountability Office.

THE BUSINESS OF SPYING
written by a.norlina, April 28, 2011
The official figures don't account for intrusions into commercial computer networks, which are part of an expanding cyber-espionage campaign attributed to China, according to current and former U.S. national security officials and computer-security experts.

In the last two years, dozens of U.S. companies in the technology, oil and gas and financial sectors have disclosed that their computer systems have been infiltrated. In January 2010, Internet search giant Google announced it was the target of a sophisticated cyber-attack using malicious code dubbed "Aurora," which compromised the Gmail accounts of human rights activists and succeeded in accessing Google source code repositories.

The company, and subsequent public reports, blamed the attack on the Chinese government.

The Google attack "was certainly an escalation of Chinese network operations against the U.S.," says Joel Brenner, former counterintelligence chief for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. "Thousands" of U.S. companies were targeted in the Aurora attacks, Brenner says -- far more than the estimated 34 companies publicly identified as targets so far -- a scale which Brenner says demonstrates China's "heavy-handed use of state espionage against economic targets."Many firms whose business revolves around intellectual property -- tech firms, defense group companies, even Formula One teams -- complain that their systems are now under constant attack to extract proprietary information. Several have told Reuters they believe the attacks come from China.

Some security officials say firms doing business directly with Chinese state-linked companies -- or which enter fields in which they compete directly -- find themselves suffering a wall of hacking attempts almost immediately.

The full scope of commercial computer intrusions is unknown. A study released by computer-security firm McAfee and government consulting company SAIC on March 28 shows that more than half of some 1,000 companies in the United States, Britain and other countries decided not to investigate a computer-security breach because of the cost. One in 10 companies will only report a security breach when legally obliged to do so, according to the study.

"Simply put, corporations cannot afford negative publicity (about computer security breaches)," says Tom Kellermann, vice president of security awareness at Core Security Technologies and a contributor to the study.

GONE PHISHING
written by a.norlina, April 28, 2011
What is known is the extent to which Chinese hackers use "spear-phishing" as their preferred tactic to get inside otherwise forbidden networks. Compromised email accounts are the easiest way to launch spear-phish because the hackers can send the messages to entire contact lists.

The tactic is so prevalent, and so successful, that "we have given up on the idea we can keep our networks pristine," says Stewart Baker, a former senior cyber-security official at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and National Security Agency. It's safer, government and private experts say, to assume the worst -- that any network is vulnerable.

Two former national security officials involved in cyber-investigations told Reuters that Chinese intelligence and military units, and affiliated private hacker groups, actively engage in "target development" for spear-phish attacks by combing the Internet for details about U.S. government and commercial employees' job descriptions, networks of associates, and even the way they sign their emails -- such as U.S. military personnel's use of "V/R," which stands for "Very Respectfully" or "Virtual Regards."

The spear-phish are "the dominant attack vector. They work. They're getting better. It's just hard to stop," says Gregory J. Rattray, a partner at cyber-security consulting firm Delta Risk and a former director for cyber-security on the National Security Council.

Spear-phish are used in most Byzantine Hades intrusions, according to a review of State Department cables by Reuters. But Byzantine Hades is itself categorized into at least three specific parts known as "Byzantine Anchor," "Byzantine Candor," and "Byzantine Foothold." A source close to the matter says the sub-codenames refer to intrusions which use common tactics and malicious code to extract data.

A State Department cable made public by WikiLeaks last December highlights...
written by a.norlina, April 28, 2011
... the severity of the spear-phish problem. "Since 2002, (U.S. government) organizations have been targeted with social-engineering online attacks" which succeeded in "gaining access to hundreds of (U.S. government) and cleared defense contractor systems," the cable said. The emails were aimed at the U.S. Army, the Departments of Defense, State and Energy, other government entities and commercial companies.

Once inside the computer networks, the hackers install keystroke-logging software and "command-and-control" programs which allow them to direct the malicious code to seek out sensitive information. The cable says that at least some of the attacks in 2008 originated from a Shanghai-based hacker group linked to the People's Liberation Army's Third Department, which oversees intelligence-gathering from electronic communications.

Between April and October 2008, hackers successfully stole "50 megabytes of email messages and attached documents, as well as a complete list of usernames and passwords from an unspecified (U.S. government) agency," the cable says.

Investigators say Byzantine Hades intrusions are part of a particularly virulent form of cyber-espionage known as an "advanced persistent threat." The malicious code embedded in attachments to spear-phish emails is often "polymorphic" -- it changes form every time it runs -- and burrows deep into computer networks to avoid discovery. Hackers also conduct "quality-assurance" tests in advance of launching attacks to minimize the number of anti-virus programs which can detect it, experts say.

As a result, cyber-security analysts say advanced persistent threats are often only identified after they penetrate computer networks and begin to send stolen data to the computer responsible for managing the attack. "You have to look for the 'phone home,'" says Roger Nebel, managing director for cyber-security at Defense Group Inc., a consulting firm in Washington, DC.

It was evidence of malicious code phoning home to a control server -- a computer that supervises the actions of code inside other computers -- that provided confirmation to U.S. cyber-sleuths that Chinese hackers were behind Byzantine Hades attacks, according to the April 2009 State Department cable.

As a case study, the cable cites a 10-month investigation by a group of computer experts at the University of Toronto which focused in part on cyber-intrusions aimed at Tibetan groups, including the office of the exiled Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India.

Referencing the Canadian research, the cable notes that infected computers in the Dalai Lama's office communicated with control servers previously used to attack Tibetan targets during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Two Web sites linked to the attack also communicated with the control server.

TARGETS DETAILED

The same sites had also been involved in Byzantine Hades attacks on U.S. government computers in 2006, according to "sensitive reports" cited in the cable -- likely a euphemistic reference to secret intelligence reporting.

The computer-snooping code that the intrusion unleashed was known as the Gh0stNet Remote Access Tool (RAT). It "can capture keystrokes, take screen shots, install and change files, as well as record sound with a connected microphone and video with a connected webcam," according to the cable.

Gh0st RAT succeeded in invading at least one State Department computer. It "has been identified in incidents -- believed to be the work of (Byzantine Hades) actors -- affecting a locally employed staff member at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, Japan," according to the cable.

"Javaphile."
written by a.norlina, April 28, 2011
Evidence that data was being sucked out of a target network by malicious code also appears to have led cyber-security investigators to a specific hacker, affiliated with the Chinese government, who was conducting cyber-espionage in the United States. A March, 2009 cable identifies him as Yinan Peng. The cable says that Peng was believed to be the leader of a band of Chinese hackers who call themselves "Javaphile."

Peng did not respond to three emails seeking comment.

The details of alleged Chinese military-backed intrusions of U.S. government computers are discussed in a half dozen State Department cables recounting intense global concern about China's aggressive use of cyber-espionage.

In a private meeting of U.S., German, French, British and Dutch officials held at Ramstein Air Base in September 2008, German officials said such computer attacks targeted every corner of the German market, including "the military, the economy, science and technology, commercial interests, and research and development," and increase "before major negotiations involving German and Chinese interests," according to a cable from that year.

French officials said at the meeting that they "believed Chinese actors had gained access to the computers of several high-level French officials, activating microphones and Web cameras for the purpose of eavesdropping," the cable said.

TESTING THE WATERS
written by a.norlina, April 28, 2011

The leaked State Department cables have surfaced as Reuters has learned that the U.S. is engaged in quiet, proxy-led talks with China over cyber issues.

Chronic computer breaches have become a major source of tension in U.S. relations with China, which intensified after the major Google hack was disclosed in January 2010, according to U.S. officials involved in the talks. Even before the Google hack, Chinese officials had recognized the problem as well.

In mid-2009, representatives of the China Institutes for Contemporary International Relations, a nominally-independent research group affiliated with China's Ministry of State Security, contacted James A. Lewis, a former U.S. diplomat now with the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Lewis said that in his first meeting with his Chinese counterparts, a representative of the China Institutes asked: "Why does the Western press always blame China (for cyber-attacks)?" Lewis says he replied: "Because it's true."

There was no response to request for comment on the talks from the Chinese embassy in Washington.

Preliminary meetings at CSIS have blossomed into three formal meetings in Washington and Beijing over the last 14 months. According to two participants, the talks continue to be marked by "a lot of suspicion." Attendees have focused on establishing a common understanding of cyber-related military, law enforcement and trade issues. Cyber-espionage isn't being discussed directly, according to one participant, because "the Chinese go rigid" when the subject is raised.

One reason: for China, digital espionage is wrapped into larger concerns about how to keep China's economy, the world's second largest, growing. "They've identified innovation as crucial to future economic growth -- but they're not sure they can do it," says Lewis. "The easiest way to innovate is to plagiarize" by stealing U.S. intellectual property, he adds.

There have been a few breakthroughs. U.S. and Chinese government officials from law enforcement, intelligence, military and diplomatic agencies have attended in the wings of each discussion. "The goal has been to get both sides on the same page," says Lewis. "We're building the groundwork for official discussions."

A former senior national security official who has also attended the talks says, "Our reports go straight to the top policymakers" in the Obama administration.

Chinese participants have sought to allay U.S. concerns about a Chinese cyber-attack on the U.S. financial system. With China owning more than $1.1 trillion in U.S. government debt, Lewis says China's representatives acknowledged destabilization of U.S. markets would, in effect, be an attack on China's economy, itself.

Despite the talks, suspected Chinese cyber-espionage has hardly tapered off. Documents reviewed by Reuters show that CSIS itself recently was the target of a spear-phish containing malicious code with a suspected link to China.

On March 1, an email sent from an address on an unofficial U.S. Armed Forces family welfare network called AFGIMail was sent to Andrew Schwartz, chief spokesman for CSIS. Attached to the message was an Excel spreadsheet labeled "Titan Global Invitation List."

An analysis conducted for Reuters by a cyber-security expert who asked not to be identified shows the email may have been sent from a compromised AFGIMail email server. The Excel spreadsheet, if opened, installs malicious code which searches for documents on the victim's computer. The code then communicates to a Web-site hosting company in Orange County, California that has additional sites in China.

Here is what the United States mainstream media is not saying regarding the death of Osama Bin Laden:

1) The US government has been looking for Osama Bin Laden since 1998.

2) Since September 11, 2001 the United States has spent US$ 6 trillion dollars in Defense spending instead of using that money for new infrastructure, education, and other more productive uses for that money.

3) The United States has one dead man to show for an investment of US$ 6 trillion dollars.

4) Osama Bin Laden becomes an “Immortal Legend “ for the Arab world in the same way Che Guevara became an “Immortal Legend” to the Americas.

5) If anything Osama Bin Laden will become an inspiration to future generation of religious fanatics in the Muslim world.

I have been watching on television the comments of all kinds of talking heads and I have been surfing the channels from CNN, to MSNBC, to channels 2, 4, 5, 7, to BBC, Bloomberg TV, and so on – and everybody is commemorating this event as being the greatest victory the United States had since 9/11.

Some talking heads had the balls to say that this event restore the United States military prestige, and credibility to the rest of the world.

Hello, the lights are on, but is anybody home?

It took 13 years for the United States to find this fellow, and in the last 10 years the United States spent US$ 6 trillion dollars in Defense spending.

Let me repeat it: in the last 10 years the United States spent (or pissed away) US$ 6 trillion dollars in Defense spending – and all the United States has to show for this US$ 6 trillion dollars investment is a dead man: A dead man who becomes an “Immortal Legend” for the Muslim world.

Osama Bin Laden changed the American way of life, and Americans became scare to death of terrorism to this day, and for years to come.

Moral of the Story: At the same time when the US government was pissing away US$ 6 trillion dollars in Defense spending - and a large part of this money borrowed from other countries such as China, Japan and Brazil - the United States government was neglecting all areas of investment related to the future of the US economy: from infrastructure, to education, and so on...

Today, we have a bankrupted United States with a very poor prospects for the future.

A country that every day looks more like a collapsing Soviet Union than anything else.

Osama Bin Laden: "The Archer"

“In Afghanistan the Mujahideen armed with stinger missiles supplied by the CIA they gave a very hard time to the Soviet army - Bin Laden became a stinger missile expert in this war earning the nom de guerre "The Archer." And people such as Bin Laden became a key in helping the Mujahideen win the war against the Soviet Union.

At the end of the day the CIA provided the weapons and training to Osama bin Laden; the Stinger missiles to shoot down Russian helicopters in Afghanistan. The Archer became a stinger missile expert and he became so good that he helped shoot down most of the 89 Russian helicopters in a short period of time. At that time Osama Bin Laden became a Legend and a Hero of war in Afghanistan.”

By the way, after the Russians left Afghanistan the "Mujahideen" became the "Taliban."

the amount of time to find this sob and eliminate him will be nothing in looking back in history

only idiots like you are harping about the years

all praise to obama for concentrating on pakistan with covert action and not even telling them. they were hiding him. all praise to him for not getting side tracked like bush , in iraq

all praise to the military who went in there and put this rabid dog out of his misery

and, its one simple plain message and nothing else, a mother f**ker who thinks they can plot and carry out plans to kill thousands of people on american soil , will be hunted down like the dogs they are and killed

terrorism wont stop, they werent stopping anyway so the dumb argument that it will only incentivate terrorists is bulls**t

thank god that mother f**ker was hunted down and shot like a dog

Excellent points, Ricky. In fact, I'm forwarding your comments to several friends who will no doubt agree with your analysis. At 6 trillion per diabolical terrorist, the Yankees won't last long.

If I may, I'd like to add to your observations. Why in the world are the Yanks concerned with cutting off the tail of the monster? To win this war, they have to go for the head, and if they don't, Iran will eventually do it for them, or at least try. I thinks the Yanks are trying, but they have it arse-backwards because of their dependence on Saudi oil. Again, great analysis Ricky.smilies/wink.gif

May be, they have outsourced the task of "cutting off the tail of the monster" to the capable, competent and fearless French. If the French can depose the President of Ivory Coast with their armored vehicles, they can easily bomb Riyadh to smithereens with their Rafales fighters.

The political decoy is an individual who has been selected because of their strong physical resemblance to the person they are impersonating.

American college kids are clueless....
written by Ricardo C. Amaral, May 03, 2011

Ricardo: The more I think about the more I realize that the American college kids are completely clueless about the impact that Osama Bin Laden will have on their entire lives.

If we adjust for the real inflation that we had on the United States in the last 10 years, and not the “fairy tale” nonsense that the US government publishes as inflation, then the cumulative Defense spending of the last 10 years would translate to something around $ 10 trillion dollars in today's dollar value.

The American college kids are commemorating the fact that a big chunk of this money borrowed for Defense spending it has been charged on their credit card for the American kids to pay it in the future.

Never mind that this money that has been pissed away for the last 10 years in defense spending it will have a major impact on our daily lives for years to come in the form of US government at all levels cutting all kinds of government programs such as student loans, medicare, medicaid, social security, pensions, new infrastructure, and so on...

Being unable to qualify ones sources of information is the price of being stupid you might say, which, on average is shared equally amongst 95% of peoples everywhere. Ricky would have us believe that Brasil's foreign trade being something like 27 percent or so Real denominated will preclude them from paying up on the Bin LameDead's ticket price. By the way, Americans thought Bin Laden was hiding in some cave in the mountains.

And Bin Laden had been living in a luxurious house with his family for the last 6 years right nest door of the major military academy of Pakistan.

Bin Laden loved Pepsi, and Coca-Cola and had it delivered it on a regular basis to his luxurious cave.

Ha, ha, ha....

US intelligence is really effective: it took ten years to find an Arab as tall as a NBA basketball player who was living in a luxurious mansion right next door to the West Point Academy of Pakistan.

Just imagine if they were not efficient, and did not have all this money and the state-of-the-art in hi-tech available to them.

And Bin Laden had been living in a luxurious house with his family for the last 6 years right nest door of the major military academy of Pakistan.

Incredible for several reasons. I was reading an article in NYTimes that says that this house was built in 2004. If I recall the troubled history of Pakistan, at that time the President of that country was a General who had close relationship with the U.S. Probably he was trained at the close by Military academy which was (and still is) probably run by his subordinates and colleagues in uniform. Hard to believe that they were unaware of the reasons for a high security private house being built and did not investigate further. After this guy was impeached, the civilians took over and Benazir Bhuto was subsequently assassinated. I think her husband is in power now, though I am not sure.

So for the military and civilian powers to claim that they were not "aware" of OBL´s presence on their territory until May 1, 2011 is a bit too much for anyone to swallow. smilies/cheesy.gif Considering that they have been receiving military and civilian financial aid for years from the U.S., I wonder if the U.S. policy towards their "friends" will change.

Joao, a lot of people around the world doesn't believe in the story that the US government came up with about the death of Osama bin Laden.

People here in the USA, and people in other countries are questioning the story that the US government gave about this Osama Bin Laden business, and the US government started changing the story of what was supposed to have happened in that raid – The US government is losing even more its credibility now that the US government started changing the original story that they made public the other day.

Parece que a versao da morte de Bin Laden que o governo Americano criou nao grudou.

Besides the US government had more than enough time to create with photoshop software a decent picture of Bin Laden's dead body to make it public, and they could ask for help from Hollywood for some finishing touches to make it more believable.

Of course everyone has one (whether they express it well or not) based on their own personal set of experiences, accumulation of "knowledge", etc., etc.. Where the line is drawn is where someone has gone far too far to the edge of beleivability making claims to stress their point or quite possibily confabricating absolute merda to make something seem as if it were fact. One's opinion (when presented clearly as being just such) is always okay - Norlinha clearly stepped over the line (unless of course there was something somehow lost in the translation and nao-linha actually meant to say she sent the note she wrote to the Kremlin - in that case kudos are due her as the best damn FSB agent that ever existed!)

Intellectual Masturbation?

Okay...so Bin Laden really died months BEFORE the attack on the World Trade Center!!(???)

Amaral, you have an MBA (so do I) so you know about the "Peter Principle".

In other words, self-promoting yourself to the "level of your incompetence."

You should think about it. Irrationality in one area casts doubts in all of your other areas.

We call it Intellectual Masturbation (like Jim Jones in Guyana with his Kool Aid) when one lifts his opinions/fantasies above that of...even God.

First, don't confuse the American Military Budget with that of the American Miiltary Contingency Budget (that which went to the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars - about 900 Billion dollars - lets's round it to a trillion). The United States DID NOT spend 6 trillion dollars for Bin Laden.

And now...this thing with Bin Laden dying before the World Trade Center attack. It seems now that somehow Al Quaeda is SUPPORTING this American 'trick'. Really?

What difference does it make whether the U.S. spent a Trillion or 6 trillions to hunt down OBL ruthlessly? lots of money and your tax payers could certainly afford it. If I recall correctly, the bounty GWB promised on this "rouge element" was just 25 Millions and the U.S. could have have bought one or two high level officers in the Pakistani "Security Services" for this price a long time ago and saved billions of dollars.

But..but..but..but.. I don't have an MBA nor even a high school degree and whom am I to express my unwarranted opinion?

Let's think
written by adrianerik, May 07, 2011
One trillion was used to wage two wars...to take down Sadaam Hussein...marginalize Al Quaeda in Iraq...restore the infrastructure of the country and now do the same in Afghanistan.

The bulk of the chore to hunting down Bin Laden was done by the CIA.

MBAs mean little. You can get a curriculum and study on your own. It would be better for someone to get an MPA or MPH (Masters of Public Administration or Masters of Public Health, a discipline SORELY lacking in Brazil...except for pockets of the South)

But since I consider the gist of Amaral's views to be fascist (believing in a corporate impulsed state which considers some citizens to be of greater value than others...which he implies in nearly everything he says). Given that, then, "clever as I am" I show my resistance by being one of the "uppers" (who can use the language of the "uppers" if need be) but whose life's work is dedicated to the so-called "lowers".

The issue on this thread is that of integrity and broad leaps of illogic and hidden (not so subtly) anti-American rhethoric.

Unfortunately, I've seen the above practiced as a high art by some of the mass news media in Brazil and by some of my professor friends teaching at faculdades and state and federal universitites here. I'm not smarter than them but confrontations with scores of racist white American "PhDs" have shown me that biased subjectivity cancels any value that a degree supposedly brings, for example the deeply flawed NAO SOMOS RACISTAS by Ali Kamel but worse than that, the absurd reviews by Veja and other sources that were more like high school students gushing over some rock star.

Since you claimed that you have a MBA (as if that gave more credibility to your opinion, “Goldman Sachs the Pillage People” are full of a*****es with MBA's from the top US universities).

Second, if you have a MBA it's about time for you to start to use your brain for a change, and start thinking.....

Here are the actual figures for US Defense Spending from the Clinton years up to today - to Barack Obama as follows:

United States government actual budget figures during the 8-year Bush administration.

United States Government Annual Budget during the Bush administration. Each year, on the first Monday in February, the President of the United States submits his budget request to Congress for the following fiscal year:

Plus other supplementary amounts that the government requested the total adjusted amount for defense spending for the 8-years of the Bush administration it will reach over the US$ 4 trillion dollar level.

Note: The cumulative total actual US Government budget for the 8-year period of the Bush administration was US$ 20 trillion dollars and the actual defense spending for the 8-years was US$ 4 trillion dollar equal to 20 percent of the total.

For Fiscal Year 2011 it is $ 708 billion
For Fiscal Year 2010 it is $ 691 billion
For Fiscal Year 2009 it is $ 515.4 billion

United States Defense Budget for period.....
written by Ricardo C. Amaral, May 07, 2011

Part 2 of 2

Ricardo: By the way, here are the actual figures for Defense Spending for the Bill Clinton years and the estimated figures for the following 7 years.

President Bill Clinton administration (Jan’93 – Jan’01)

Actual figures total annual defense budget during the Clinton administration.

Year - Amount in billions of US dollars

1993 - US$ 267.4
1994………251.4
1995………255.7
1996………251.8
1997………242.6
1998………250.7
1999………257.3
2000………263.6
-------------------------
Total cumulative actual amount for 8-year period Jan’93 – Jan’01 = US$ 1,773.1 billion.

On the year 2000 Defense Department Annual Report – The Defense Dept. projected the following amounts for Defense spending for the 7-years period from 2001 to 2008.

Year - Amount in billions of US dollars

2001 - US$ 272
2002………276
2003………285
2004………292
2005………299
2006………307
2007………314
------------------------
Total cumulative amount for 7-year period Jan’01 – Jan’08 = US$ 2,045 billion.

Note: Based on these estimates they probably would have estimated the year 2008 for US$ 321 billion
for a total cumulative amount for 8-year period Jan’01 – Jan’09 = US$ 2,366 billion.

**************

Ricardo: Adrianerik at the end of the Clinton administration they were talking about cutting the Defense Budget in the coming years.

Actual Bush administration 8-year cumulative Defense Spending = US$ 3,898 billion
Clinton administration estimated figure for total cumulative Defense Spending for 8-year period Jan’01 – Jan’09 = US$ 2,366 billion.

Osama bin Laden effect on US Defense spending during the 8-year Bush administration = US$ 1,532 billion.

Then if you on top of that the Osama bin Laden effect on the 3-year Obama administration = US$ 1 trillion.

The total Osama bin Laden effect on the US Defense budget from 2001 to 2011 is at least = US$ 2.5 trillion

Conclusion: Out of the total US$ 6 trillion dollar US Defense spending for 2001 to 2011 the figure includes US$ 2.5 trillion dollars as the Osama bin Laden effect.

That means that without Osama bin Laden and 9/11, instead of spending $ 6 trillion US dollars in Defense spending for the period 2001 – 2011, the United States would have spent US$ 3.5 trillion dollars or less in Defense spending for that same period.

You don't know what degrees I have Amaral because I don't make them an issue on these threads. But I know about yours because you throw them around as if to make your fantasies have more weight.

I knew you would bite on the "Osama effect". You just contradicted yourself AGAIN big time.

First of all, your assertion was not Military Spending...it was "6 trillion dollars spent to chase Obama". Joao picked up on your exact words.

You now give me a list of Military Spending. WHICH WE WOULD HAVE HAD WHETHER OSAMA EXISTED OR NOT!

The money used to actually put into action that massive Military is the Contingent Spending used for the two wars AND Homeland Security.

How do I say that more simply!

If you bought a $50K truck to do business and then, because your wife's car broke, you give her a lift to the train station every day, you don't say that you paid $50K to drive your wife to the train station. You would have paid $50K for the truck anyway. It is the extra money for gas and toll that ON THE WAY TO THE TRAIN STATION that is your "contingency spending".

The U.S. did not create a huge military buildup BECAUSE of Iraq or Afghanistan. (that was actually cited as a problem). The increased spending was a result of reliance on civilian auxiliaries as well as educational incentives to maintain an all-volunteer army.

Either way, YOUR premise of "6 Trillion Dollars to find One Man" is pure butt air....isn't it? Where...was...your...brain?

The Osama effect was NOT spending.

It refers to the economic impact of LOST REVENUE due to the attacks on the World Trade Center and the INCREASED SPENDING directly related to those attacks. The Contingency Spending is a part of that so-called "Osama Effect".

(How can you accept the term "Osama effect" if you accept that Osama was dead BEFORE the World Trade Center attacks. Isn't that term another "conspiratorial" attempt?)

The most important reason that I learned from one of the most senior diplomat during my service with the government at that time and I still find it difficult to forget is that the reason why US military is still strong in Afghanistan after so many years is because of the oil flow and how it flows down from the Caspian Sea. Sorry I can't elaborate more on that but as one good proof before his retirement from the government he managed to show the photos of one of these tunnels when he was visiting that place with few diplomats from other countries. You see the US government and it's military might (along with NATO) is creating such war zones sceneary in order to distract the attention of the whole international community from the truth treasure of the earth....and that is oil.....it is truly about oil eploration and exploitation....sorry guys I can't reveal more than that.......

Adrianerik needs to mention other people's MBA to validate his opinion
written by Ricardo C. Amaral, May 07, 2011

Ricardo: Adrianerik, I never brought up my educational background about my MBA, and advanced studies in economics, it is always people like you that mentioned my degrees and bring up this subject in an effort to claimed that you also have a MBA, as if the fact that you have a MBA would give you more credibility to your opinion.

Adrianerik, you are the one who is trying to use my MBA degree to validate your opinion. I don't need to wave my educational credentials like you. The world is full of idiots with MBA, and PhD degrees.

I earned my credibility with foresight of things to come as I described on my articles over a long period of time, and by writing year after year about many subjects before they happened and became a reality.

As I mentioned before I don't give a s**t what degrees you have, and I doesn't make any difference to me.

You said on your posting: “You now give me a list of Military Spending. WHICH WE WOULD HAVE HAD WHETHER OSAMA EXISTED OR NOT!”

I did not give you anything.

These figures were provided by the US government as part of the last Budget of the Clinton administration – these figures were included with the Defense budget for that year, and they also provided the best estimates for Defense budget for the following 7 years – when the Clinton administration passed that final budget they did not know as yet which political party was going to win the election of year 2000.

If Al Gore had become the new president of the United States in 2000, then the Defense budget probably would have keep its downward trend, or would have been closer to that final Defense budget estimate from the Clinton administration.

The “Bin Laden effect” it would be even greater if we add on top of the Defense budget, the budget for the Department of Homeland Security.

.
thank you, sir.
written by adrianerik, May 08, 2011
I didn't asked the Pentagon for anything.

They don't have to prove their assertions. It's up to us to put context to figures. As you said, figures don't make statements, they don't have political viewpoints.

On Al Gore, it should be noted that it was George Bush, following Clinton's suggestions, who advocated the closing of (if I remember correctly) 22 domestic military installations.

Either closings or consolidations, or both. I forget.

He was fought bitterly by his own Republicans, whose states had interests in maintaining a military industrial complex in their states, regardless if they were needed or not ie: (the subs built in Groton, Conn), Willow Grove in Pennsylvania, Fort Hood in Kileen, Texas and others.

On a personal note, I almost despise academics (though they are needed). I am an unapologetic activist, a humanist, idealist who is also objective, pragmatic and when necessary, Machiavellian, which is why I accept the premise of one of the articles your posted about "democratic authoritarianism -- oxymoron? --" although "democratic authoritarianism" and "fascist democratic authoritarianism" are not the same. One is a wolf in sheep's clothing which I consider Brazil to be, in practice, if not necessarily, intent.

You want to change Brazil around in a decade, raise the penalty for corruption to a death sentence, punishable the day of sentencing by the court (as China does), close down Brasilia or make it a part down job, and only send public school educated kids to publicly funded universities.

I'm still trying to figure out what is the purpose of your states and state governors. Get rid of them.

Remove teachers from under the mayors. Federalize the hiring. Allocate teachers in the country based upon population...maybe 1:15. Create a massive "Singapore" plan for education.

Place the MP under civilian control.

Legalize drugs and control supply. (You might as well...your PM can't kill 20 million youths...it would be bad for tourism)

Shut off trade with China (or learn how to make them sweat like the Angolans are doing). They're still going to buy your food. If not, good, their demand is making food prices go up, anyway. And...American farmers have much better economies of scale...they're going to steal the agricultural market.

Oh...and allow some sweet white Jersey corn to be grown in the country. Along with some southern yams.

Viola! The country of the future arrives...just like that!

Another issue.

It's Confiscation and Pillage time for the United States

Ricardo: It's Confiscation and Pillage time for the United States

SouthAmerica: You can bet that Saudi Arabia will be an easy prey for the United States government.

I warned the Saudis many years ago that eventually the Us would pillage their assets. It's just a matter of time.

The US pillaged the assets of Iraq when the US confiscated the assets of the Iraq government before of the war against that country.

The Egyptians, and Tunisians are not going to see a penny of any assets confiscated in relation to Mubarak's government collapse.

The Libyan people can kiss goodbye to the $ 30 billion US dollars that the US government confiscated from that country.

As far the US government is concerned it's open season on the assets of other governments, and it's pillage time.

If the Saudi government has not started moving all their money outside the United States then they deserve to lose all their assets, because they are a bunch of fools.

In June 2003, I wrote an article regarding “Brazil and Saudi Arabia” that caught the attention of the Brazilian State Department in Brazil.

Later, I also found out that my article had been circulated among members of the Saudi Arabian Royal family, and also among senior members of the Saudi Arabian government.

...My article was an eye opener for a lot of people in Saudi Arabia. He told me that he used to have two bank accounts here in the United States until recently, but he closed both accounts after reading my article, and moved his money to a safer place out of the USA.

He also told me that he knew many other people in Saudi Arabia that were doing the same thing; moving their money out of the USA, just in case.

Ricardo: The CIA and the US military had many "Al qaeda" web sites set up on the internet to monitor the people who came to these websites.

And the US government could put any information on these web sites as if the information came from a member of "Al qaeda".

The US military plant stories all the time on foreign newspapers, then they as the US mainstream media to mention these stories as if they were written by the local people.

Most Americans don't have a clue about what is propaganda, and what is a real story, and they believe even in a silly story like the one they came up about the death of Bin Laden.

The more they repeat, the more Americans believe on anything - basically they are not the smartest people in the world.

Anything involving Brasilian oil interests me greatly. Recently, I watched an interview with PBO where he stated the Yanks are drilling more oil within their borders than ever before. However, an editorial just a few days later said PBO was hugely mistaken.

The editorial claims that the Yanks were obtaining twice as much oil from within their borders in the 70's as they are today. That is such an absolute counter that I thought I would ask you for your opinion. I would appreciate learning who is telling the truth. For whatever reason, I have come to believe that economists might have a better grasp of certain truths. Just wondering. Thanks. Ricardo: ASP, it is so important that you keep an open mind to new ideas, and to the opinions of people with superior analytical capabilities such as Noam Chomsky.

It is important not to dismiss someone simply because you’ve heard his opinion about something that you disagree with – then you wrote that person off about everything else.

Noam Chomsky is considered the number one intellectual alive here in the United States today.

He is the number one most quoted “living author” today, and he is the number 8 most quoted author in history.

I love Noam Chomsky, and I enjoy all his lectures and writings.

Noam Chomsky represents the "Last of a Dying Breed" here in the U.S. - Americans who use their brain to think.

By the way, the US mainstream media is completely clueless about what has been going on around the world for a long time.

Noam Chomsky is one of the few people here in the US who can connect the dots, as he consistently grasps the essence and what is at the core of most problems here in the US and abroad.

ASP, I am trying to help you here – when you make silly remarks about Noam Chomsky it doe not diminishes Noam Chomsky stature in any way. It shows only your ignorance about the life and accomplishments of this outstanding man.

Try to give Noam Chomsky a chance – you might learn something from this great mind.

Chicago holds the record for number of surveillance cameras, estimated at up to 10,000. The network is said to have cost $60 million. Officials say it is worth the price, but privacy concerns are at a peak.

Blackwater Founder Builds Foreign Force in UAE – May 15, 2011
http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2011/05/15

WASHINGTON -- The crown prince of Abu Dhabi has hired the founder of private security firm Blackwater Worldwide to set up an 800-member battalion of foreign troops for the United Arab Emirates, The New York Times reported on Sunday.

The Times said it obtained documents that showed the unit being formed by Erik Prince's new company Reflex Responses with $529 million from the UAE would be used to thwart internal revolt, conduct special operations and defend oil pipelines and skyscrapers from attack.

The newspaper said the decision to hire the contingent of foreign troops was taken before a wave of popular unrest spread across the Arab world in recent months, including to the UAE's Gulf neighbors Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

The UAE itself has seen no serious unrest. Most of its population is made up of foreign workers.

Blackwater, which once had lucrative contracts to protect U.S. officials in Iraq, became notorious in the region in 2007 when its guards opened fire in Baghdad traffic, killing at least 14 people in what the Iraqi government called a "massacre."

One former Blackwater guard pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges in those killings, and a U.S. court reinstated charges against five others last month. Prince has since sold the firm, which changed its name to Xe. The firm denies wrongdoing.

The newspaper said the Emirates, a close ally of the United States, had some support in Washington for Prince's new project, although it was not clear if it had official U.S. approval.

Two UAE government officials contacted by Reuters declined immediate comment on the New York Times report, and the U.S. embassy in the UAE also had no immediate comment. It was not possible to locate Prince for comment.

The Times quoted a U.S. official who was aware of the program as saying: "The Gulf countries, and the U.A.E. in particular, don't have a lot of military experience. It would make sense if they looked outside their borders for help."

State Department spokesman Mark Toner told The Times the department was investigating to see if the project broke any U.S. laws. U.S. law requires a license for American citizens to train foreign troops.

Toner also pointed out that Blackwater, now known as Xe Services, had paid $42 million in fines in 2010 for training foreign forces in Jordan without a license, the Times said.

According to former employees of the project and U.S. officials cited by the Times, the troops were brought to a training camp in the UAE from Colombia, South Africa and other countries, starting in the summer of 2010.

They were being trained by retired U.S. military, and former members of German and British special operations units and the French Foreign Legion, the Times said.

Prince had insisted the force hire no Muslims, because they "could not be counted on to kill fellow Muslims," the paper said.

Former employees also told the newspaper the Emirates hoped the force could be used to counter any threat from Iran, which the Arab states in the Gulf consider a foe.

Although The Times said the documents it obtained did not mention Erik Prince, former employees had told the newspaper he had negotiated the contract with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan.

Emiriati officials had proposed expanding the force to a brigade of several thousand if the first battalion was successful, the newspaper said.

We might critize the Americans for many reasons, but they have shown that eveybody is equal in front of the law, by arresting this character and refusing the bail. I'm afraid Mr. Amaral has finally crossed the line when the ability to decipher a supply/demand chart makes him think that he can repair transmissions on cars.

All of us need to stay within our comfort zones. I've tried to follow some of the videos where self-absorbed loonies use as references other self-absorbed loonies using arguements that fall into the same logic "demanding that someone or government PROVE A NEGATIVE".

"Can Joao ACTUALLY PROVE that he is not a secret alien from Mars bent upon destroying the earth?"

Can he PROVE IT?

That is the opus of most of the babble.

Of course, unless I'm mistaken, while Mr Amaral urges Brazilian to flee repressive America, he still lives in probably, one of the most libertarian countries on earth. (and I am probably a bigger critic of my country than anybody in this site...but I don't have an agenda).

And they're going to run back to "good ole Brazil" where Big Brother does not even let you leave without paying your taxes and scanning your life. Where out of thousands of cases of corruption by politicians and businessmen, only 4 have been resolved by the STJ (whose kids go to school with the kids of the criminals).

I actually had to laugh at that post by Amaral. It was ludicrous. I read it several times to be sure I was seeing what I was seeing.

I have scores of friend in Journalism school here in Brazil and most of them are thinking about leaving the country to be able to express their opinions without left in some ditch by the side of the road.

Ben Bernanke: A Traitor to his Nation?
written by a.norlina, May 19, 2011
We must ask ourselves if Ben Bernanke is really a foreign agent sent from another country to weaken our nation ahead of a major invasion.

I mean, how else could one defend his ridiculous decision making? Clearly it is not in America's interests.

For my money, Ben Bernanke may go down as America's most dangerous traitor.

I do not use that word lightly -- this man is tearing apart the financial fabric of the country that I love. His policy decisions are designed to crush the American consumer at every level.

Do you want to know why oil is at $110 a barrel when the world is swimming in oil? Ben Bernanke's ultra-easy monetary policy and its deleterious effect upon the value of the American dollar, that’s why.

I've always believed that it would take decades before the US dollar could possibly lose its reserve status. Thanks to Mr. Bernanke, that once unshakable conviction in the long term viability of our currency has been shaken to its very foundation. The man is actually hastening the demise of the dollar.

Again, I put it to you that Ben Bernanke's actions are that of a traitor to his own nation's long term interests.

How long will the world place its trust in the US dollar? Think about why we are seeing commodity prices, specifically silver and gold, run and gun higher. The world is divesting away from American paper money into tangible wealth. It is still going to take a while for the Chinese and the oil rich Arabs to divest themselves of their dollars, but the process is well under way.

Once they have the majority of their dollar assets either hedged or safely removed from the paper dollar, you will see a unified effort to abandon the dollar as the world's reserve currency. According to a an article in the well respected British newspaper The Independent, these talks are already well under way:

"In the most profound financial change in recent Middle East history, Gulf Arabs are planning – along with China, Russia, Japan and France – to end dollar dealings for oil, moving instead to a basket of currencies including the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan, the euro, gold and a new, unified currency planned for nations in the Gulf Co-operation Council, including Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Qatar."

What I thought would take 40 years could happen in less than ten; that is, we could see the rest of the world start conducting their trade in either euros or some new hybrid currency based off a basket of currencies and commodities as outlined above.

Let me be clear: We are not there yet, and while I am currently short the dollar, I don't expect it to go down in a straight line.

The manipulation machine of the Fed will be well at work trying to calm everyones' fears. Don't believe it for a second -- every time they try to talk down Silver or Gold, you want to be in there buying on weakness.

The US economy is still a formidable machine, and American ingenuity and hard work will not stop, of that I am sure.

The issue I have is with all of the central bank meddling and intervention. The global economy worked for centuries without central bank machinations. What convinced us that we needed to "manage" our economy beyond the normal self correcting forces of supply and demand?

Why do we even need a "Federal Reserve"? I want to hear your opinions, pro and con, yea or nay to the Federal Reserve. Any thoughts on how to get rid of them, or at least significantly reduce their powers, are more than welcome.- The Tycoon Report

SouthAmerica: If you are capable of connecting the dots then there is more and more obvious evidence, and it is all over the place for you to see it that the United States government is reaching the panic state regarding the coming collapse of the US dollar.

It is just a matter of time for the herd to get spooked and start the final stampede out of the US dollar.

Fault Lines - U.S. Colombia Base Agreement
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZow3x646cE

At the end of October 2009, the United States quietly signed a deal with Colombia -- its staunchest ally in Latin America, and the largest recipient of US military aid in the hemisphere. The agreement guarantees the United States access to Colombian military bases for the next ten years. The event went practically unnoticed in Washington. But it raised a storm of protest from South American governments threatened by the specter of US military intervention in the region. Fault Lines traveled to Colombia to investigate why US access to the bases is a cause for so much consternation.

*****

It is no secret to anyone today (at least to people who use their brain to think) that the US dollar has finally reached the end of the line as the main world reserve currency.

It is no surprise that at the end of October 2009 the United States signed an agreement with the Colombian government that guarantees the United States access to seven Colombian military bases for the next ten years.

Since today the Amazon region is home to the largest untapped reserve of gold in the world.

For the people who aren't smart enough to connect the dots to get the picture.

In a Nutshell:

1) The world is waking up to the fact that the US economy and financial system is in intensive care (in a deep coma) and is being kept alive only by massive US government intervention, and the US is getting away with the debasement of its currency only because of the special status of the US dollar as the main world reserve currency.

But for all practical purposes the US dollar has finally reached the end of the road, and the collapse and meltdown of the US dollar can happen at any time.

It's no coincidence that the United States (a desperate country) has started to wage wars all over the place, such as in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, and so on...And the United States government is confiscating billions, and billions of all kinds of assets from all these Middle East countries.

The handwriting is on the wall: If you look around then you realize that it's just a matter of time for countries such as Saudi Arabia to have all its assets including the Saudi government, or any member of the Saudi Royal family to be confiscated in the name of some silly excuse but the real reason is to pillage their resources.

2) Do I need to spell out the reason why the United States is building 7 military bases in Colombia, and at the same time the US has reactivated the 4th fleet which main responsibility is related to the North of South America ? (The 4th fleet had been dis-activated since the end of WW II).

Ricardo and Columbia
written by Ederson, May 20, 2011
Ricky, the subject of the Yankee bases in Columbia goes on and on. Fascinating. I will review your links again. However, I do have one question as to Columbia itself. I have dear friends who once lived in Columbia and have told me horrible stories about life there concerning the turmoil inside the country, including the confiscation of the family business. I have no love for the Yankee 's South American policies, but during the time Columbia was struggling for survival against the drug lords and gangs, did Brasil extend any effort to help their neighbor and friend? Just curious. I'm going to research the subject and see to what extent Brasil utilized it's growing influence and power in the region to help another country so close to its sphere of influence.
I recognize that Brasil is a country of growing importance in the world's affairs, but maybe it's time that we start pointing out all the good Brasil did in assisting Columbia in its dire moment of need instead of Blaming the Yanks for filling the vacuum that may have well been filled by Columbia's caring neighbors. Just wondering.smilies/wink.gif

Ricardo: Colombia has been engulfed in a civil war for over 40 years.

Brazil has no business in getting involved in other countries civil wars.

The only reason the United States got interested on that area of the world starting a few years ago, it is because they started finding oil
in that region.

Otherwise the United States could careless to South America.

The US is also aware of the massive amount of untapped natural resources that we have in the Amazon area.

Other than that Colombia has been a basket case for the last 40 years.

Watch these videos and you will realize that US involvement in Colombia has nothing to do with helping the Colombian people.

.

Ricardo. Are you sure?
written by Ederson, May 20, 2011
Ricky, how can you be so certain that Brasil has no business getting involved in other country's civil wars? That, to me, is a perplexing statement coming from a friend who also admires Brasil's rise amongst competing nations in the world's power and economic struggle.
If Brasil is to eventually EARN the status among the United Nations to the extent that it wished to pass judgement on other nations as members of a council, such as the security council, then it must stand for something, and to assert that Brasil has no business getting involved in the struggle of different factions within nations must be based on a belief that there is no right or wrong, and that each has valid points. What about the current Arab situation, the deplorable situation in Africa, struggles within South America? Many of those are civil wars, however uncivil, and surely Brasil's position must be that a despotic dictator, drug lord, or theology-based government of oppression is wrong. Am I wrong? I don't think Brasil can have it both ways. Why would any country polish the apple of power and prestige as strongly as Brasil and eventually not partake of the fruit? Again, I don't know.
My worry is that any vacuum left unfilled will soon be filled by someone or something, such as the Yanks in Columbia, and upon reflection, perhaps Brasil should have done something, such as guard its border more diligently and stop financing the war against Columbia through illegal drug purchases of its own dependents.
I'm probably wrong and probably far too patriotic, but before I nail another country as steeply as I see in some of these videos. I believe the home battle should be won first. But thanks a million for your links and your enthusiastic spirit. I'm learning a great deal. Thanks, again, Ricardo.smilies/smiley.gif

Ricardo: Ederson, sorry to disappoint you, but I have real mixed feelings about the worth of the United Nations.

If I were president of Brazil I would give the UN about 6 months to give Brazil a on the Security Council seat on the UN Security Council.

At the end of 6 months if Brazil was not one of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, then I would withdraw Brazil as a member of the UN.

In my opinion, it is bulls**t what the UN is letting NATO do in Libya – allow NATO air strikes to destroy the entire infrastructure of that country.

Basically, I have no use for the United Nations.

If Brazil were a member of the UN Security Council, I would use Brazil's vote to try to block any further NATO air strikes and destruction in Libya.

Against the United Nations as well
written by Augustus, May 21, 2011
It's fascinating how people of distinct political persuasion can be against (or in favor) of the same factors/institutions.

If I had my way I would have every Western & Latin American nation leave the United Nations, and send it packing for Geneva. Indeed, because the UN and most other international organizations have been infiltrated by the agents of extreme left and wish to create a United Socialist planet, I see a great danger in its hidden agendas

As for Libya (as well as Syria & Iran), I would have those nations bombed back into the Stone Age. Dangerous places led by barbaric, tyrannical individuals who either pursue personal glory oppressing the people for the benefit of his/her family (the case of Libya/Syria) or dangerous Religious Totalitarian states who are intent to spread a heinous ideology across the world should be obliterated.

Augustus, I agree with so many who believe the UN may now be the problem rather than a part of the solution.
I also have questions concerning Brasil's position involving international affairs. I think the days of Brasil's neutral paradise may be coming to an end. Brasil is rising in both power and status, and such a rise will either align itself with the right or left or, itself, be a target of those two factions. For an example, Venezuela. Everyone laughs at the Yank's concerns of Iran's missiles being placed in dictator Hugo's fiefdom, but the threat to Brasil appears just as real to me as it might to someone living in Chicago or Miami. I don't think Brasil can continue to have it both ways. If it wishes to be a neutral paradise, then it should quit thumping its chest. But if it truly wants to aspire to something, then it should stand for something and declare those values. Just my opinion of course.

Hello Ederson, it has been a long time
You are absolutely right! I agree with you 100% While I do not think Brazil is ready to lead Latin America (see my new article here about this topic), Brazil is already in a position to make its weight fell, but it must beef up the military in order to add teeth to its economic power! As for the UN... That place should be dismantled. LOL
Surprised at You, Joao!
written by adrianerik, May 22, 2011
Arent they a bit over dramatic? May be it is true in the part of the country where you live. I still remember late ACM punching and kicking the reporters for having "disrespected" him, but I am yet to hear similar stories in our part of the country. Instead of physically harming them, the politicos ease them out of their jobs.ie shaft them the "British fashion".

Yes, I am! Surprised at you.

There was a journalist watch report on Brazil a few years ago. And yes, in the capitals there is a certain critical mass that protects journalists, to a point. There might be many reasons. One is, in the capitals, the white collar crooks and polticos are much closer to their power base and their ability wear down any investigation outlasts any short-term headlines in the newspapers.

In "repressive" American two bit (cinquenta centavos) journalists can bring down presidents, governors and CEOS of fortune 500 companies. They can stay on their asses for weeks, months or years, if necessary.

There is a video on the web about a Brazilian reporter trying to do that in Para, report on a mayor's collusion with the woodcutters tearing down the Amazon. The mayor got together with a bunch of thugs and only the PM, friends of the mayor saved his life, but they gave him hours to get out of town.

Joao, these new journalists do not want to be the 'hit and run' types. They realize that they have to rip the face off of Brazilian corruption, and maintain a long campaign against individuals, community by community, city by city, state by state.

And yes, that is dangerous...and they know it!

Brazilians, including those on this site, attack the "system of corruption". Or make allusions to the giants of corruption in Sao Paulo or Maranhao who know that this type of sniping will not wreck their empire, so have little interest in smashing ants.

But where corruption first hits the people is the billions of reais that goes to the municipalities, where corrupt individuals can be identified, and their families and sons in laws and uncles and neighbors and they have no class...they beat up, harrass and hurt people. They kill.

And for the tens of thousands of people who are from these towns, receiving their education in the capitals but wanting to rescue their people it is going to be dangerous for them to tackle these crooks. I hope that they still do it, since there exists a dickless portion of Brazil's population who have not found a cause for which they are willing to die.

I remember that one reporter had her blog shut down because of these crooks...or her blog had to become a "members only" blog so the reach of these crooks extend very far.

Spy vs. Spy...the Facebook factor
written by a.norlina, May 27, 2011
Nobody owns Facebook not even the CIA and left alone the company in question.

Do not stop reading there -- or even continue on to dig into the reason “why” one of the Web 2.0’s most unresolved conspiracy theories floats through the air. The theory in question is that Facebook is being controlled, right down to the bits and bytes, by technological elites that housed inside the CIA, and its aim is to control our minds and knowledge

There is even a Facebook Associate that predicts: “The purpose of this group is to promote awareness of the fact that Facebook has its origins as a CIA-funded project for the data-collection, data-mining and surveillance of USA student information at all educational institutions in the USA.”

Wowzer. I thought the purpose of Facebook was to make billions of monetary reward for Mark Zuckerberg by changing over our privacy information into advertisement online.

Unfortunately not at all while dating back previously to perhaps as early as 2007 when Facebook was founded in 2004, rumors has about it that Facebook’s ties largely to Langley, Virginia, began circulating online without control, says Bill Irvine, who operates discussion site AboveTopSecret.com. He mentioned : “Facebook could be a huge database engine to figure out what people are talking about.”

The real argument is that Facebook gives the CIA a deep listening post inside the darker enemy territory -- our territory -- where the agency can obtain and gain keen insights into what is on our minds and study it for data gathering purposes. It can also manage to manipulate our beliefs and faiths by seeding the social network with untruths along side with other bits of evil and ill information.

More fuel has been sparked onto this global scenario by the upheavals in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Bahrain, and even China, where many common people look for -- and some even realise -- the hands of the CIA pulling the strings of revolutionaries and religious fundamentalist who are destabilizing anti-American governments.Even if Facebook can topple governments, can't we suggest that the CIA is behind the hidden walls or even the firewallsl? Of course it is not that simple to accuse.

But what if then there are few “facts and factors ” that proven which stated that Facebook is a CIA front, and those facts start off with a factual reality. Irvine explains that the dots get connected this way: An early Facebook investor was venture capital firm Accel Partners , which owns around 8 percents of Facebook (Accel put up $13 million way back in 2005, when the company was still recognize as thefacebook.com).

Let us do the mathematical calculation: $13 million got multiplied uphill to upwards of $7 billion (let us assume that a conservative $35 billion evaluation of Facebook). That is a lot of lucre -- a homerun of an investment for the future.

But however when the plot thickens. Accel CEO Jim Breyer once served on the 26-member board of directors of the National Venture Capital Association , alongside Gilman Louie the founder and former CEO of In-Q-Tel , which is a CIA-funded venture capital firm with an aim and mission to further investment in early-stage at such companies that have the potential to affect intelligence gathering and conduct.

Might not that have been included Facebook? Of course, but Facebook is not on In-Q-Tel’s list of portfolio companies.

Could it be that Q-Tel just be lying around? There is a possibility. No doubt about that.

And then suddenly there is this: Gilman Louie -- the third man in this scenario update-- left In-Q-Tel in late 2005 to create his own company. As far as the info goes, he managed to buy none of Facebook. Not even a share.

Either Louie is an excellent spy who manages to camouflage his trail in remarkable fashion or even maybe, just maybe, this whole fairytale is a product of distortion cells in research of conspiracies theories that just do not exist at all.

Irvine, who has followed the Facebook-CIA rumors for five years, summation the facts that what we ought to know and what we just have no idea what it is all about : “The CIA has never indicated an investment in Facebook. There is no direct link between Facebook and the CIA, nothing that can be proven.”

He even argues: “I don’t personally think anything can be drawn directly between them.”

And just when Irvine tantalizingly info adds: “You do know there is a lot more to connect Google with the National Security Agency . There just might be something to that one”
